Awards Received by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually (with some exceptions) to those who have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, for the holding and promotion of peace congresses, and promoting and contributing peace. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Institute, together with the recommendation of the Parliament of Norway, because of her outstanding contributions for peace. Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1972 The Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding is an international award presented by the Government of India in honor of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first prime minister. It was established in 1965 and is administered by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to people "for their outstanding contribution to the promotion of international understanding, goodwill and friendship among people of the world". The money constituent of this award is 2.5 million rupees. Mother Teresa received the award for her promotion of goodwill and friendship in India, especially in Calcutta. Magsaysay Award in 1962 The Magsaysay Awards is one of the most prestigious awards given in Asia. It is considered as the Nobel Prize of the continent. It is awarded to people who made outstanding contributions in Government Service, Public Service, Community Leadership, Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts, Peace and International Understanding and Emergent Leadership. Mother Teresa was awarded by the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation with this award for her outstanding works for peace and international understanding. Leo Tolstoy International Award in 1992 The Leo Tolstoy National Award is given by the Union of Soviet Societies of Friendship and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries, to be awarded to outstanding humanists who have given their hearts to children. Mother Teresa was given the award for her attachment to the children of India and her efforts to uplift their lives. Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 This award is given by the Roman Catholic Church, especially by the pope to persons who made great contributions for promoting peace and non-violence. This award is a tribute to

Pope John XXIII. It was given for the first time to Mother Teresa, because of her commitment to her apostolate and her great contribution for peace in India. Padma Shri Award in 1963 The Padma Shri Award is given by the Government of India generally to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Social Service and public life. Mother Teresa was given the fourth highest civil award of India because of her commitment to public service and care for the poor. Bharat Ratna Award in 1980 The Bharat Ratna Award is the Republic of India's highest civilian award, for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavor. It is awarded by the President of India. Mother Teresa received the award for her high endeavor for establishing peace and promoting public service in India. Balzan Awards in 1979 The International Balzan Prize Foundation awards four annual monetary prizes to people or organizations that have made outstanding achievements in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, culture, as well as for endeavors for peace and the brotherhood of man. Mother Teresa was awarded by the foundation because of her endeavors for peace and brotherhood. Templeton Awards in 1973 The Templeton Prize is an annual award presented by the Templeton Foundation. Established in 1972, it is awarded to a living person who, in the estimation of the judges, "has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life's spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works". It was presented to Mother Teresa by Prince Phillip at the Buckingham Palace. She received the award because of her untiring efforts to build a spiritual dimension of love in India, through her charity works.
