Fair Use Guidelines

When original music, photography, music, digital programs, scientific discoveries, and other forms of art are created, copyright laws have been put in place to protect and credit the creators. To ensure you acknowledge, recognize, and credit the work of the given individual, specific guidelines must be followed when using anothers work. It is your responsibility to follow these fair use guidelines. As an educational entity, you are allowed to use parts/aspects of copyrighted work specifically for educational uses. If you choose to use a work in its entirety, it is mandatory (by law) to request permission of the copyright owner. The following items describe what you are able to use under Fair Use. Photos, illustrations, paintings, drawings, etc. o You may use up to 5 by a single copyright owner/author Movies and Music o You may use up to 10%, but no more than 3 minutes, of a movie. o You may use up to 10%, but no more than 30 seconds of a musical piece. o You may NOT alter, change, or modify a movie musical piece without permission from the copyright owner Downloads from the Internet o You may NOT download information from one site and place it on another o You may create link to other websites o During multimedia presentations, you may include and use information for online websites Text o You may use up to 10% of a data table o You may use up to 10%, but not more than 1,000 words from an article, essay, or story o You may use up to 250 words from a poem, but no more than 3 poems from a single book or author

Even if you do not exceed the allotted amounts, according to the Fair Use Guidelines, you still MUST cite the various works in your project.
