For Information about the Sacraments

Baptism
Baptismal Preparation for parents and godparents: 7 8:30 pm the last Monday of the month. Call for Reservations. Baptisms are usually the first Sunday of the month.

Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Reconciliation and First Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Matrimony

Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Confirmation
A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Apply through the Office of Religious Education.

NOTE: Adult applicants for the sacraments should contact the Parish Office.

Anointing of the Sick See adjoining column.

SAINT RITA
REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

OF

CASCIA CHURCH

PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners,
This Sunday in his letter to the people of Colossus, St. Paul writes and declares:

Christ is All in All.

By contrast, Qoheleth of Ecclesiastes (first reading) writes: Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! In that case, we are in good stead to have a Redeemer, who will save us because he fills our lack by being All in All. Some of us realize early on, while others of us take a lot longer, perhaps a lifetime, to figure out that life is fleeting, and that the things, the stuffs of this earth, fall woefully short of delivering what they seemed once to promise us. All of us can give witness from life experience that life is fleeting and that all things are passing. Even kids who are entering first grade this year can say, Oh, going to kindergarten, that was so 2012! I am reminded of my comments on the occasion of our Centennial Celebration Mass back in 2008, when I had to report that a call to a group of religious sisters, who once served at St. Rita, brought the quick declaration, Sorry, Father, theyre all dead! My goodness. And did you ever stop to think about how the commercial world depends on our being convinced that what we own is out of date and obsolete? Cars, mattresses, and computers (and ALL electronics) are plagued with shorter and shorter life expectancyat least in our imagination. The last line of todays gospel passage advises us to be rich in what matters to God. Even as we emerge from a deep economic recession, Detroits bankruptcy is a very sober societal reminder that financial security is a very delicate balance. Just building more and larger barns to hold all of our possessions is no solid guarantee for tomorrow. But how, then, do we rely more on what matters to God to solve the unforeseen crisis or the next tragedy to come our way? Too often these days we see and hear interviews with people who have just lost everything, because of a fire, flood or a mudslide. Cant you just tell the difference between the folks who have faith and those who dont? I always say, if you have religion, it should be working for you. If you do not understand Jesus paschal mystery and how his life, death, and resurrection are meant to show us the way through life, then chances are, you will be the most likely to get angry at God, blame God, or even write God off! Lets not forget here that Jesus good news IS good news. We understand that the gospel is a message of salvation and redemptionvery often a salvation from ourselves. Even in the Most Holy Eucharist that we celebrate together today can be discovered and experienced Jesus saving love and, more importantly, what truly matters to God. Msgr. Richard

St. Rita Rosary Prayer Group

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Prayer Group was established at St. Rita about twenty years ago by Marylyn Barnes, a long-time parishioner who recently relocated to San Luis Obispo. The Group has met at a members home on Monday afternoons ever since. Participants in the Prayer Group have changed faces over the years as new members join and others leave due to an illness or a move. However, the Group has been blessed to have long-term, wonderful people meet and pray together every week. The purpose of the Group is to pray the Rosary, along with other prayers, for members intentions. Socializing is an added bonus. We meet at 2 pm each Monday for about 1.5 hours. Alternating members host the group at their home each month BUT it is not mandatory that you be a host. ~Wed love to have you join us.~

Senate Bill SB-131

Archbishop Gomez urges us to vote NO on this pending bill in the State Assembly. Under current California law, all lawsuits must be brought within a limited number of years after the events that give rise to the suit. SB-131 would suspend this deadline (statute of limitations) for one year to give childhood sexual abuse victims the chance to sue their abusers employers for damages.

(rebates range from 2% to 15%). School Office 626/355-6114

The most important reason for our opposition is that

this proposed legislation will not protect all children. SB131 only allows expired lawsuits to be filed by victims who were abused in private schools and organizations such as the YMCA or Little League. Children who were abused in public schools, foster homes, or other public institutions are specifically not protected by SB-131.

ST. RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH ~Together in Mission~

Have you made your commitment to Together in Mission (TIM) this year? Unfortunately, the reminders that are usually sent from the Archdiocese to previous donors were not mailed this year. This has contributed to our falling behind our target for this time of year. Assessed Goal 2012: YTD 2012: Assessed Goal 2013: YTD 2013: $59,712.68 $44,501.00 $57,138.50 $37,054.00

Last January the principal of Cantwell High School and St. Rita parishioner, Dave Chambers, spoke to us about how he had experienced the wonderful ways that TIM funds were used to assist youth and promote Catholicism in needy parishes and schools. We can be sure that all donations made to TIM are used to keep these parishes and schools operating as source of graces and blessings. It is also financially important for St. Rita that we meet our assessed goalif we fall short, the difference has to be paid from our operating budget. For 2012, we paid $6,131.68 from our operating funds to meet our TIM assessed goal. If you havent yet given in 2013, please consider doing soit really is important and youll be helping your parish and those in need.

Thank youMary Lou Butler

NOTE: TIM envelopes are available in the Vestibule and also in the Parish Office. You may make a donation via credit card or a check payable to Together in Missionin either case, please return your donation/form/envelope to the Parish Office or drop it in the Sunday Offering basket.
