WORKSHEET 5

Reading the Bible as Literature

ON THE PRINCIPLES OF LITERARY INTERPRETATION

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Use the three principles of literary interpretation to come up with a full reading of a Biblical passage.

SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS: 1. As a group, agree on which text i.e. passage each of the members is going to read. 2. Individually, research about your passage. Make sure that your sources are valid and legitimate. 3. After gathering enough data, discuss among yourselves the passage you have chosen. Agree on the genre of the text. Cite evidences to support your claim (genre). Then articulate the Author Meaning and Text Meaning of the passage. When you do these, make sure that you employ the big ideas of the three principles on literary interpretation. 4. When your group is done, work individually for the Personal Meaning of the text. Elaborate on it i.e. articulate your context so that any reader would clearly understand your reading. 5. Complete the table on the next page. 6. When you are done, upload your worksheet to Scribd, and embed it to your PLW.

The Parable of the Lost Son | Luke 15, 11-32

LITERARY GENRE

Parable The story can be considered a parable for a moral can be taken out of the story.
AUTHOR MEANING The author emphasizes the power of Gods forgiveness and willingness to back to Him. The Lost Son in the parable represents the people of the world, while the Father represents God and His forgiveness. The author meant these two characters to represent the relationship between God and His people. Even if his people commit sins, there is always time to go back to the Father or God to ask for forgiveness.

TEXT MEANING The text emphasizes on forgiveness in a father and son relationship, in which the father will never give up loving his son even when his path goes astray. The text also shows the consequences of greed and liberty in life, but also shows the benets of going back home, where people are ready to love you again.

PERSONAL MEANING Personally, I believe the passage tries to show the reality of how at a young age, people can go astray due to their attachment to worldly pleasures. It also shows that true love does not cling on anything concrete. There is no limit to loving, and it never breaks contrary to the properties of concrete things. The passage also shows the meaning of family, where nobody gets left behind. Even if the children leave, whether they make do on their own or not, parents are always ready at home to accept everything that youve become.
