ELECTROMECHANICS-I (Electrical & Electronics Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ?????
1. (a) Explain what is meant by armature reaction.
(b) A 4 pole generator supplies a current of 143A. it has 492 armature conductors i. wave connected, ii. Lap connected. When delivering full load, the brushes are given an actual lead of 100 . Calculate the magnetizing armature ampere turns per pole. The field winding is shunt connected and takes 10A; find the number of extra shunt field turns necessary to neutralize this demagnetization. 2. (a) Explain various power stages in a dc generator and also derive the condition for maximum efficiency. (b) A 10KW, 250Vdc, 6 pole shunt generator runs at 1000rpm when delivering full load. The armature has 534 lap connected conductors. Full load copper loss is 0.64KW. The total brush drop is 1V. Determine the flux per pole. Neglect shunt current. 3. (a) What are the conditions to build up voltage in a shunt generator? (b) A 220V compound generator is supplying a load of 100A at 220V. The resistances of its armature, shunt and series windings are 0.1Ω, 50Ω and 0.06Ω respectively. Find the induced emf and the armature current when the machine is connected as: i) Short shunt ii) Long shunt 4. (a) Explain with neat circuit diagram, HOPKINSON’S test on two identical dc machines. (b) A dc shunt motor has a full load rating of 10HP, 1000RPM, 250V. The armature resistance is 0.5Ω and field is 220Ω. The efficiency at full load is 85%. Determine i. No-load current. ii. Armature current when the torque developed is 60N-mt, and iii. The speed when motor takes 10A. 5. (a) Explain the phenomenon of commutation in a DC motor. (b) A 4 pole lap connected armature running at 1500rpm delivers a current of 150A and has 64 commutator segments. The brush spans 1.2 segments and inductance of each armature coil is 0.05mH. Calculate the value of reactance voltage assuming. i. Linear commutation. ii. Sinusoidal commutation. Neglect mica thickness. 6. (a) Explain the Retardation Test on a dc motor. (b) In a retardation test on a separately excited motor the induced emf in the armature falls from 220V to 190V in 30seconds on disconnecting the armature from supply. The same will take place in 20seconds if immediately after disconnection, armature is connected to a resistance which takes 10A (average) during this fall. Find the stray losses of the motor. 7. (a) Derive an expression for the toque developed in a dc motor with usual notation. (b) Explain with a neat circuit diagram the practical set up to obtain the internal and external characteristics of de shunt generator. 8. Write short notes on any Two of the following. (a) Energy balance. (b) Speed control of dc motors. (c) Use of equalizer bar.
