THE GENESIS, MISSION & CULTURE

XLRI was founded in 1949 by Fr Quinn Enright, S.J. in the Steel City of Jamshedpur. India, immediately after its independence, was planning to transform itself - politically, economically and spiritually, by liberating itself from the shackles of poverty, illiteracy and pervasive illness. Fr. Enright visualized XLRI to be a partner in this liberation and development journey of India with a vision of renewing the face of the earth. Fr. Bill Tome and Fr. Edward McGrath joined hands with him to bring that vision to fruition. They together with the other Jesuit companions, worked tirelessly towards translating the Vision Renewing the face of the earth into action. The forces that made it possible for XLRI to realize the vision were (1) Commitment to Magis - to strive for the better, to excel; (2) Convictions through Discernment - a decision making process which is not self-centered but people-centred, nation-centred and God-centered and (3) Courageous execution of the decisions because it was Gods work. The translation of this vision is the culture of XLRI. The hall mark of this culture is, not to walk on the beaten path but to strike new routes; not to benchmark but to be benchmarked, to be second to none but to be the first to respond to the needs of the people and the nation, by taking up the tasks which are bold but necessary which nobody has hitherto taken up. This enterprising and pioneering spirit can be witnessed throughout the history of XLRI. From the beginning XLRI had a global outlook. XLRI was founded by an international group - the Jesuits. International persons were the leaders and teachers. International funds were sought to build XLRI and XLRI was the first to internationalize its programme.

JAMSHEDPUR

INDIAS FIRST PLANNED INDUSTRIAL TOWNSHIP

Jamshedpur, the hometown of XLRI, is not an average Indian town. India's first planned industrial township, Jamshedpur is widely rated as a model town and one of the best maintained cities in the world. The city was conceptualized and made into reality by the Tatas, and is named after Tata Steel's founder, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. The 15,000-acre township is well-planned and its environmental standards are comparable to the best amongst the developed nations.

The Jubilee Park, which is the next door neighbour

of XLRI, is a sprawling 225 acre park and the natural jogging and the Lake are added attractions of the park. There are many options for students who want to take micro breaks from tests and quizzes here. The food freaks binge out on the various restaurants in the city, which includes eateries from all parts of the country. The nature lovers often frequent the Dimna Lake to have some tranquility or go trekking on Dalma Hills. The Dimna Water Sports Complex offers facilities for rowing and boating. In fact, the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) provides scope for a variety of adventure sports such as rock climbing, para-sailing and river rafting. Sports lovers usually sweat it out at the Tata Stadium which is just a 10 minute walk from XLRI. The people in the city are friendly, and the name XLRI does get you some differential treatment, testimony to the goodwill and equity that XLRI has cultivated over five decades. destination for the health freaks of XL. CAMPUS LIFE AT XLRI

The richness of life at XLRI is something most Business schools are envious of. The culture that has evolved over half the century of XLs existence is a mad 200 mile per hour adrenaline rush of case studies, group discussions, fairs, examinations and mythical sports meets.. Life will never have it as good as it does in XL. XLs uniqueness springs from its closely knit student community where everyone not only knows everyone else but also remembers them for a lifetime. A unique environment of caring & sharing is what makes this B-school different. Despite a highly competitive spirit amongst the student community in the classroom to excel academically, the atmosphere outside the classroom is one of great comradeships. A fresher is made to feel absolutely at home when he joins XLRI and becomes part of the student fraternity. An intense academic rigor and an incredible phenomenon called the XL culture combine to produce magic-a hectic yet heady concoction of work and play. All programs here being fully residential, the seniors and juniors are an integral part of each others. lives. It is hence no surprise that XLRI has the most extensive alumni network among all Indian B-schools. Teamwork is stressed throughout your life at XL. In fact the environment of bitter rivalry among students that traditionally prevails in B-schools has been removed through conscious efforts by the institute. Instead, an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation has been carefully nurtured over the years and this has made the XLer an excellent team player and leader in every organization that he becomes a part of. In addition to this XLRI lays great emphasis on ethics and a sense of social responsibility. The institute is highly regarded in the corporate world for its many efforts to instill these qualities in the minds of tomorrows business leaders. Built to their roots.
