In dieser Norm sind allgemeine Vorschriften fr Fertigung und Montage - bei MTU bzw. bei Lieferanten von Teilen fr MTU Produkte - festgelegt. Die mit ..) gekennzeichneten Abstze enthalten einzelne Vorschriften. Diese Norm gilt nicht fr: Betriebsmittel, Hilfs- und Betriebsstoffe, Gelenkwelle, Katalogteile, Normteile, Schriftzeichnungen, Luft- und Raumfahrtteile.
Hinweis: Zeichnungsangaben haben Vorrang vor den Festlegungen in Normen.

This standard defines the general manufacturing and assembly specifications at MTU and/or at suppliers of parts for MTU products. Paragraphs marked ..) contain individual specifications. This standard does not apply to: auxiliary materials, operating equipment, universal shafts, catalogue parts, standard parts, text drawings, aeronautical and space-related parts.
Note: Specifications noted on drawings take priority over the specifications in standards.

Die technischen Angaben des Bestellers auf der Fremdteil-Zeichnung sind in jedem Fall verbindlich. Sie haben Vorrang vor den allgemein gltigen Angaben des Lieferanten. 3.1 Grundforderungen

The customer's technical specifications in the external component drawing are, in all cases, binding. These specifications also have priority over the general specifications defined by the supplier. 3.1 1) Basic Specifications Material code conversion from German to American alternative materials, or vice-versa is defined in MTN5162-1. Unless otherwise specified in the drawing and provided that the permissible limits of geometrical deviation are not exceeded, elevations or depressions of a size acceptable in normal workshop practice are permissible at the face centres of turned parts, notwithstanding the roughness specification of the surfaces in question. All cast components must be leak-free after machining Surface faults (e.g. cracks, crack-like defects and notches) are not acceptable on components, with the exception of such faults that are within the machining tolerances. Surface condition on cast and forged components (blank and finished components). See MTL5057.

Bezeichnungen bzw. Kennzeichnungen sind nur an den in der Zeichnung angegebenen Stellen zulssig. 8) Die Kennzeichnung mittels Laser oder elektrochemischer Gravur darf nur (falls die Stelle der Kennzeichnung nicht vorgeschrieben wird) an dynamisch unbelasteten Stellen erfolgen. 9) Sind bei einem Bauteil, das durch Schmieden hergestellt werden kann, weder Faserverlauf noch Formgebungsverfahren auf der Zeichnung angegeben oder durch eine Norm festgelegt, dann darf das Teil auch aus dem Vollen gefertigt werden. Bei Bauteilen lterer Zeichnungen ist der bisherige Standard beizubehalten. In Zweifelsfllen ist mit der Konstruktion Rcksprache zu nehmen. 10) Anlassfarben, Schwrzungen u. . an gehrteten, ungehrteten oder vergteten Teilen sind zulssig, ausgenommen an Passungen und Oberflchen mit Rz gleich oder kleiner als 3 m (Rz max. 3 m), sofern in der Zeichnung nichts anderes angegeben ist. 11) In lteren Zeichnungen ist die Senktiefe von Ansenkungen fr Schraubenauflageflchen nicht bemat. In diesen Fllen sind - bei Eintragungen wie ebengesenkt oder angespiegelt - die Ansenkungen planparallel zur gegenberliegenden Flche bzw. rechtwinklig zur zugehrenden Achse zu fertigen. Dabei sind fr mittlere Ansenkdurchmesser d = 20 mm Parallelittsfehler bzw. Schrglage bis max. 0,1 mm zulssig. 7)

Stamps, hardness test points and the like must not cause notching or other damage. Application of designations and identification marks is only permitted in the fields specified in the drawing. Application of identification marks by laser or electro-chemical engraving is (if the position for marking is not specified) only permissible in areas not subjected to dynamic loads. If neither the grain fibre progression nor the forming process is specified on the drawing or defined by a standard for a component which can be forged, the component can be manufactured from a solid ingot. The original standard must be maintained for components of old drawings. In cases of doubt, the design department must be consulted.

10) Tempering colours, blackening and the like are permissible on hardened, non-hardened and tempered parts, with the exception of fits and surfaces with Rz less than or equal to 3 m (Rz max. 3 m), unless otherwise specified on the drawing. 11) In older drawings, no dimensions are specified for the countersinking depth for screw head mating faces. In these cases, drawing entries such as countersunk flush or levelled, countersinking must be plane-parallel to the opposite surface or at right-angles to the associated axis. Parallelity deviations or inclinations of max. 0.1 mm are permissible for average countersinking diameters of d = 20 mm.

12) Verschlussstopfen aus Kunststoff zum Verschlieen von Bohrungen/Kanlen mssen einen Bund haben und farbig (nicht transparent) sowie deutlich erkennbar sein. 13) Gewindegrundlcher mit ausgeflltem oder mit Strichlinie gezeichnetem Bohrungsgrund (Schnittdarstellung) drfen mit beliebigem Spitzenwinkel fr die Bohrerspitze zwischen 118 und 180 (flachgesenkt) ausgefhrt werden. Bei Flachsenkungen sind die Radien am Bohrungsgrund in Absprache mit der Fertigungsfachabteilung festzulegen. Zeichnerische Darstellung der Gewindegrundlcher mit wahlweiser Ausfhrung des Bohrungsgrundes: 12) Synthetic-material plugs used for sealing of bores/ducts must have a collar and be cloured (not transparent) and easily recognizable. 13) Blind tapped holes with bottoms shaded or represented by a dotted line (sectionalised drawings) may be drilled with any optional drill point angle of between 118 and 180 (flat-sunk). 14) Die zulssige Oberflchenrauheit von Auflageflchen fr Cu-Dichtringe betrgt: - bei konzentrischen Riefen Rz 16 m - bei beliebiger Riefenrichtung Rmax 10 m 15) Schweiverbindungen sind - wenn nicht anders vereinbart / festgelegt - nach der Bewertungsgruppe C nach ISO 5817 bzw. ISO 10042 auszufhren. Schweiarbeiten an Schweibauteilen sind - wenn nicht anders vereinbart / festgelegt nur von geprften Schweiern nach EN 287 bzw. ISO 9606 auszufhren. 16) Beim Schweien von ringsum verlaufenden unterbrochenen Kehlnhten z. B. an Rippen, Knotenblechen und sonstigen Versteifungen sind - sofern in der Zeichnung nichts anderes angegeben wird - die Stirnseiten (Enden), wegen der Bruchgefahr, mit einer Kehlnaht zu umschweien und die Ecken auszuschweien. Gegebenenfalls ist die Anzahl der Einzelnhte gegenber der Zeichnungseintragung zu erhhen. 17) Fertigungsschweiungen und Instandsetzungsschweiungen von Aluminiumgussbauteilen sind nach MTV5071 durchzufhren. 18) Wenn nicht anders vereinbart/festgelegt, sind Rohrleitungen aus Stahl nach MMN 509, Rohrleitungen aus CuNi10Fe1,6Mn nach MMN 510 und Rohrleitungen aus Al-Legierungen nach MTN5088 zu fertigen.

Unless otherwise agreed/specified, welding on welded components is only to be executed by welders tested as per EN 287 or ISO 9606. 16) If not otherwise specified on the drawing, when making all round, non-interrupted fillet welds, e.g. on ribbed, gusset plate and other reinforced materials, the edges (ends) must be allround welded with a fillet seam and the corners closewelded. If necessary, the number of individual welds must be increased above that specified on the drawing. 17) Production welding and repair welding work involving aluminum components must be performed in compliance with MTV5071. 18) Unless otherwise agreed/specified, steel pipework must be produced as per MMN 509, CuNi10Fe1,6Mn pipework as per MMN 510 and aluminium-alloy pipework as per MTN5088. 19) Brazed connections must comply with the

20) Auf den Zeichnungen geben die Zahlenwerte in der Kurzbezeichnung des Werkstoffes hinter dem Kennbuchstaben V (vergtet) den Bereich der Werkstofffestigkeit in kp/mm (1 kp/mm 10 N/mm bzw. 10 MPa) an, beim Kennbuchstaben QT (quench tempered) den Bereich der Werkstofffestigkeit in N/mm. 20) The numerical values after the material code letter V (tempered) in the drawing, indicate the material strength range in kp/mm (1 kp/mm 10 N/mm or 10 MPa), with code letters QT (quench tempered) the material strength is indicated in N/mm.

21) Allgemeine Rohrleitungen sind nach MMN 370.10 zu prfen und nach MTV5022 zu konservieren, wenn in den bestehenden alten Zeichnungen oder Stcklisten nicht auf die MMN 509, MMN 510 oder MTN5088 verwiesen ist, in der Dichtheitsprfung sowie Konservierung vorgeschrieben wird. 22) Gleitlagerschalen sind nach MTV5023 zu konservieren, wenn in bestehenden alten Zeichnungen nicht auf die MMN 413 verwiesen ist, in der Konservierung vorgeschrieben wird. 23) Korrosionsgefhrdete Rohteile (z. B. Kurbelgehuse, Rderksten) sind mit einem Korrosionsschutz nach MTV5066 anzuliefern, wenn im Verpackungsdatenblatt oder in der Bestellvorschrift ein entsprechender Korrosionsschutz vorgeschrieben wird. 24) Wenn auf lteren Zeichnungen Ultraschallprfung vorgeschrieben, aber keine Gteklasse angegeben ist, so sind die betroffenen Teile nach MTN5063 Gteklasse 2 zu prfen. Fr die zu prfenden Partien werden Rauheitswerte Rz max. 25 m gefordert. 25) Die Vorbearbeitungsmae von durch Gewinderollen herzustellenden Schraubenschften sind in MTN5083 festgelegt. 26) In Zeichnungen angegebene Drcke (z. B. Prfdruck, Betriebsdruck) sind im Regelfall berdrcke. 27) Bauteile, die whrend des Fertigungsablaufes magnetisiert werden (z. B. Aufspannen auf Magnetplattenhalterung oder Magnetische Rissprfung), sind anschlieend zu entmagnetisieren. Im allgemeinen gilt ein Bauteil als ausreichend entmagnetisiert, wenn eine an einem Faden aufgehngte Broklammer vom Bauteil nicht mehr angezogen wird. Die Restfeldstrke darf 2 bis 4 A/cm nicht berschreiten. 28) Der Leckverlust bei Gleitringdichtungen fr Wasserpumpen muss unter 250 ml/1000 h liegen. Bei Radial-Wellendichtringen ist der Leckverlust nach DIN 3761-11 zu beurteilen. 29) Der Einsatz von Scotch-Brite und Schmiergelleinwand / -papier ist restriktiv zu handhaben.

21) All general-purpose pipework systems are to be tested in accordance with MMN 370.10 and preserved in accordance with MTV5022 when the existing old drawings, or parts lists, do not refer to MMN 509, MMN 510 or MTN5088 which defines leak testing and preservation procedures. 22) Plain bearing shells are to be preserved in accordance with MTV5023 when the existing old drawings do not refer to MMN 413 which defines preservation procedures. 23) Corrosion-sensitive blank components (e.g. crankcases, gearcases) are to be delivered preserved in accordance with MTV5066 when such corrosion protection is specified in the Packing Data Sheet or the Order Specification. 24) When ultrasonic testing is specified in old drawings and no quality class is indicated, the parts concerned are to be tested in accordance with MTN5063 quality class 2. Roughness values of Rz max. 25 m are specified for the parts tested. 25) The pre-machining dimensions of rolledthread bolt shanks are defined in MTN5083. 26) Pressures specified in drawings (e.g. test and/or operating pressures) are normally gauge pressures. 27 Components magnetised during production
(e.g. clamped to magnetic retainers or subject to magnetic crack testing) must be subsequently demagnet-

ised. Component demagnetisation is generally considered adequate when the component does not attract a paper clip suspended on a thread. Residual field strength must not exceed 2 to 4 A/cm. 28) Leakage loss of coolant pump slip-ring seals must be less than 250 ml/1000 h. Leakage evaluation of shaft seals is to be made in accordance with DIN 3761-11. 29) The use of Scotch Brite and emery cloth/paper must be restricted to an absolute minimum.

Das Regelgewinde nach ISO 261 ist ohne Angabe der Steigung anzugeben (Steigung fr Regelgewinde siehe ISO 261). 32) Die Angaben im Verzahnungsschriftfeld bezglich der Kenngren KL, KR und aktive Profillnge beziehen sich immer auf den nicht angefasten Zahnkopf. Ein konkaver Profilverlauf der Profilformabweichung sowie der Flankenlinie ist nicht erwnscht. Sie darf max. 50 % der Profilform- oder Flankenlinienformabweichung betragen. Schleifkanten im Zahnfu sind nicht zulssig wenn ein Protuberanzfrser vorgeschrieben ist. Die Fuausrundung darf nicht angeschliffen oder komplett geschliffen sein (Bearbeitungen in
diesem Bereich sind nach der Wrmebehandlung nicht zulssig).

A concave progression of the profile shape deviation as well as the flank line is not desired. It must not exceed 50% of the profile shape or flank line shape deviation. Grinding edges are not acceptable in the tooth root when a protuberance miller is specified. The root radius must not be partially or completely ground (machining is not permitted in this area after the
heat treatment).

3.2

Kanten und Fasen

3.2 1)

Edges and Chamfers


In general, tapped holes are to be countersunk at less than 90 down to the thread outer diameter. Protection countersinks must be under 90. Unless otherwise specified in the drawing, the chamfer at the start of an external thread must be less than 30 to 45 to the centre axis and extend to the core diameter (see illustration).

Bei Schutzsenkungen ist nur unter 90 zu senken. 2) Gezeichnete Teile mit Auengewinde sind, wenn die Zeichnung fr die Fase am Gewindeanfang keine anderen Angaben enthlt, unter 30 bis 45 zur Mittelachse bis zum Kerndurchmesser anzufasen (siehe Bild).

3) Kantenzustand a) Kantenzustand Alt (fr nicht nach MTN5168 berarbeitete Zeichnungen) Alle Teile mssen durch Kantenbrechen (Anfasen oder Verrunden) entgratet werden. Diese Vorschrift gilt auch dann, wenn fr die zu entgraroh tende Flche das Symbol oder angegeben ist. Ist nichts anderes angegeben, gilt fr alle Kanten die Oberflchenrauheit Rz max. 100 m. Ist der Kantenzustand nicht festgelegt, gilt: gratfrei im Bereich von 0,2 bis 0,6 mm, Form der Abtragung beliebig. Muss eine Kante aus Funktions-, Montage- oder optischen Grnden eine Fase von bestimmter Gre und bestimmtem Winkel erhalten, so muss diese in der Zeichnung mit Angabe einer Toleranz vermerkt bzw. bemat sein. Bei Zeichnungseintragung Kante scharf oder Kante scharf, gratfrei ist eine Verrundung bzw. Anfasung dieser Kante nur bis max. 0,05 mm zulssig.
Hinweis: Die voranstehende Einzelvorschrift hat, mit Ausnahme des ersten Absatzes, keine Gltigkeit, wenn in Zeichnungen die Kantenzustnde nach Werkfassung DIN ISO 13715 bzw. Beiblatt 1 zu DIN ISO 13715 festgelegt wurden. In diesem Fall sind bei entsprechender Zeichnungseintragung auch gratige Auenkanten zulssig.

Edge condition Edge condition Old (for drawings not revised in accordance with MTN5168) All component edges must be deburred by chamfering or rounding. This specification is also appliroh cable when the symbol or is indicated for the surface to be deburred. Unless otherwise specified, the surface roughness for all edges is Rz max. 100 m. If the edge condition is not defined, the following applies: deburred from 0.2 to 0.6 mm, removal method optional. If for functional, assembly or optical reasons a chamfer of defined size and angle must be maintained, this must be indicated on the drawing with details of the tolerance or the dimensions. Delivery Condition and Storage

Bauteilschutz, Verpackung und Lagerung von Fertigteilen ist in den Allgemeinen Anlieferungsvorschriften (AAV) festgelegt. Die Bauteile mssen sauber, frei von Guss- und Bearbeitungsrckstnden, sowie von losen oder sich eventuell bei der Montage oder im Betriebszustand lsenden Partikel sein. Bei Teilen mit "besonderer Reinheit" nach MMN 370.9 bzw. MTN5253 sind die gekennzeichneten Reinrume durch entsprechende Manahmen (z.B. verschlieen) vor Schmutz zu schtzen. Zur Sicherstellung der Lackierfhigkeit von Fertigteilen, die in der Motorperipherie montiert werden, ist die Verwendung von Stoffen (z. B. Montagefett, Silikon) welche die Lackierfhigkeit beeintrchtigen nicht zulssig.

Protection of goods, packaging and storage specification of finished-products are defined in General Specifications for Deliveries. Components must be clean and free from casting and machining residues, loose particles and particles which may become loose during assembly or operation. Components specified to be special cleanliness in accordance with MMN 370.9, or, MTN5253, the clean areas must be protected from dirt ingressing by way of suitable measures (e.g. sealing off). In order to ensure that finished parts which are fitted within the engine periphery are suitable for painting, the use of materials which would diminish their suitability for painting (e.g. assembly grease, silicone) is not permitted.

Assembly Specifications

Abweichende oder ergnzende Angaben in den Zeichnungen sind zu beachten und haben Vorrang. 5.1 Grundvorschriften fr Montage

Compliance with deviating or supplementary specifications in the drawing is mandatory, these have priority. 5.1 1) Basic Assembly Specifications Component Cleanliness: Components must be delivered in a ready-forassembly condition (see Section 4). The areas of all components which come into contact with oil, fuel, coolant, water, combustion air or recirculated exhaust gas must exhibit a degree of cleanliness appropriate to their application. Unless otherwise expressly stated in the drawing, these areas must be clean and free from casting and machining residues, loose particles and particles which may become loose during assembly or operation. In the event of component extraction from batch-sized packages (package carriers) it must be ensured that the remaining components are not contaminated. Compliance with packing specifications is mandatory. Components must comply with these specifications when delivered to the assembly department by internal and external suppliers.
Note: Components must remain packed until immediately prior to assembly. Components specified to be perfectly clean are so coded in the drawing and must be treated in accordance with MTN5253. These components must be protected as defined in Section 4 and the packing sheet specifications in such a manner that visual checking is only then required when the charge carrier, or the packing, shows evidence of damage.

Hinweis: Verpackungen von Bauteilen drfen erst unmittelbar vor der Montage entfernt werden. Bauteile mit der Forderung Besondere Reinheit sind auf der Zeichnung gekennzeichnet und nach MTN5253 zu behandeln. Diese Bauteile mssen durch die Festlegungen im Abschnitt 4 und der Definition der Verpackungsbltter so abgesichert sein, dass eine Sichtprfung nur dann erforderlich ist, wenn der Ladungstrger bzw. die Verpackung Beschdigungen aufweist.

Gummi u. .) drfen nicht in Dieselkraftstoffen, Lsungsmitteln und Kaltreinigern gewaschen werden. Zur Reinigung sind die Teile mit trockenem Lappen abzuwischen. 4) Elastomerteile, an die besondere Anforderungen gestellt werden, drfen nicht lackiert werden, sondern mssen vor dem Lackieren abgedeckt werden. 5) Radial-Wellendichtringe, welche vom Hersteller mit l behandelt wurden, besitzen dadurch im Anlieferungszustand eine definierte Quellung. Sie drfen deshalb vor dem Einbau nur mit einem abriebfesten Papiertuch gereinigt (nicht gewaschen) werden. 6) Kleben und Abdichten ist nach MTV5062 und MMN 377 durchzufhren. 7) Werden Teile aus polymeren Werkstoffen (z. B. Elastomere, Thermoplaste) verbaut, drfen diese maximal 12 Monate alt sein. 5.2 Montage von Teilen 2) 3) Soldered components are to be verified as free from faults. 7) If parts made from polymer materials are fitted (e.g. elastomers, thermoplastics), these must not be older than 12 months. 5.2 1) Component Assembly Unless otherwise specified, the surfaces of components which move relative to each other are to be coated prior to assembly with engine oil MTH5117. Unless otherwise specified, O-rings and the surfaces they contact during assembly (bores or shafts) are to be coated in accordance with MTH5108. In cases where the O-rings are adjacent to surfaces treated with a surface sealant, the minimum possible amount of coating to MTH5108 is to be used. Compliance with the drawing specifications is mandatory for the assembly of O-rings with counterrings in water pumps. 3) When an O-ring has been mounted to a shaft, twisting of the O-ring must be rectified by inserting a scriber, with rounded end, under the ring and rotating it in the groove , provided the ring diameter is large enough. Take care not to damage the O-ring.

Der O-Ring darf dabei nicht beschdigt werden.

VBand-Schellen, Kompensatoren) sind, wenn auf der Zeichnung nichts anderes angegeben ist, an den Auflage-/Anlageflchen mit Montagestoff MTH5128, einzustreichen.

The mating faces of screws, nuts, washers and the components to be secured must be clean and polished or coated with the specified preservation agent , and free from surface irregularities and damage. Corrosion inhibitors (e.g. oil and grease) must be removed. Prior to assembly, screw threads and mating faces are to be coated with lubricant in accordance with the drawing specifications. Unless otherwise specified in the drawing, the lubricant to be used is: - Engine oil for general assembly purposes - In hot zones in accordance with MTH5128
Note: For initial assembly, subordinate threaded fasteners on Series 1600, 2000, and 4000 engines may be assembled without lubricant (dry). During subsequent assembly, they must be lubricated.

In the case of threaded fasteners for which no tightening torque is specified, the method of tightening is optional (tool/machine or manual). Tightening torques are stated in MTN5008 in dependence on the method of tightening, thread dimensions and property class.

Threaded fasteners with tightening torque specifications in the drawing - Tightening to indicated torque These fasteners must be tightened manually with either a click-stop or scale and pointer torque wrench. The click-stop torque wrench must be set to the torque specification in the drawing, irrespective of any given tolerance. If a scale and pointer wrench is used, the scale reading must be within the tolerance band specified in the drawing. The same procedure is applicable to torsion-protected fasteners. This data is also applicable to checking torque specifications. Note: If no torque tolerance is specified in the drawing, the tolerance is + 10% of the specified torque value.

Where municipal supply of potable water is limited, other sources need to be investigated - including the use of harbour basin water or sea water for certain uses. To plan the water supply system for a fishery harbour, it is necessary to estimate the peak demand for water which is a direct function of the peak landings; the number of fishing vessels using the harbour; the number of port

The gross daily volume for item (a) should be increased by 25% to cover seasonal peaks and volume for items (b) and (c) may be reduced by 50% if high pressure cleaning systems are used. Some common sources of water in fishery harbours are from borewells, rain water collection tanks and pumped sea water. Recent advances in desalination equipment to convert sea water to potable water constitute an option worth investigating.

3.1.1 Borewells
The geological investigation of the sub-strata is generally carried out by a specialist sub-contractor. More than one borehole may be required for complete assessment and the depth need not depend on the local water table. There are instances where shallow borewells may produce contaminated or brackish water, and a deeper well taps into a submerged freshwater aquifer. The major geo-technical requirement is to verify the porosity of the substratum as this will determine the maximum rate of extraction of water. In coastal areas, overextraction of fresh water from the underground water table has often caused the water to become saline through intrusion of sea water. 3.1.2 Sea water


When sea water is used for cleaning purposes, care should be taken to avoid sea water runoff entering the sewage treatment system. The pumps should be suitable for sea water. Sand excluding filter is required for sea water suction from sandy beaches. Flash distillation is relatively inexpensive if heat from a generator can be extracted via the circulating cooling system of the diesel engine. Typically, the system consists of a spherical steel container connected to a vacuum pump with heating coils circulating hot water from the engine's cooling system. The vacuum pump lowers the boiling point of water, thus making the sea water boil. Potable water is distilled off from the top and pumped to a storage tank. The major disadvantage is the frequent descaling required to remove encrustations in the distilling tank. The preferred method of desalination nowadays is by reverse osmosis. This process consists of pumping sea water at very high pressure against a special

osmotic membrane rolled up inside a steel cylinder. The membrane allows only fresh water to pass through. This system is relatively expensive to operate but in arid areas may be the only viable option. 3.3.1 Block ice 3.3.2 Flake ice 3.3.3 Tube ice Whether an ice plant is actually required inside the port area depends very much on local conditions. Other ice plants in town may be a reliable source of suitable ice and, even with the additional transport costs and the manufacturer's profit thrown in, they may be able to supply ice cheaper than it can be made by the user. A large installation has many economic advantages over a small unit and it is not unreasonable to expect that it can produce cheaper ice. Other

factors, such as being financially self sufficient, may over-ride an economic disadvantage. In addition to water supply and storage, a harbour manager should also be conversant with the manufacture, supply and storage of ice as this product, if contaminated at source (either through contaminated water supplies or through human contact during the manufacturing process), has the potential to contaminate entire fish landings; see also Chapter 2. Ice is usually manufactured in block, flake or tube form.

3.3.1 Block ice


The traditional block ice maker forms the ice in cans which are submerged in a tank containing circulating sodium or calcium chloride brine. The dimensions of the can and the temperature of the brine are usually selected to give a freezing period of between 8 and 24 hours. Too rapid freezing results in brittle ice. The block weight can vary from 12 to 150 kg, depending on requirements; 150 kg is considered the largest size of block one man can conveniently handle. The thicker the block the longer the freezing time. Blocks less than 150 mm thick are easily broken and a thickness of 150 to 170 mm is preferable to prevent the block toppling. The size of the tank required is related to the daily production. A travelling crane lifts a row of cans and transports them to a thawing tank at the end of the freezing tank, where they are submerged in water to release the ice from the moulds. The cans are tipped to remove the blocks, refilled with fresh water and replaced in the brine tank for a further cycle. This type of plant often requires continuous attention. A shift system is operated by the labour force - 10 to 15 workers for a 100 t/day plant. Block ice plants require a good deal of space and labour for handling the ice. The latter factor has been the main reason for the development of modern automatic ice-making equipment (flake and tube ice). Compared to other types of ice plants, block ice plants are more prone to producing contaminated ice if high hygiene standards are not scrupulously observed at all times. Block ice still has a use, and sometimes an advantage, over other forms of ice in tropical countries. Storage, handling and transport can all be simplified if the ice is in the form of large blocks; simplification is often obligatory in small-scale fisheries and in relatively remote situations. With an appropriate ice-crushing machine, block ice can be reduced to any particle size but the uniformity of size will not be as good as that achieved with some other forms of ice. In some situations, block ice may also be reduced in size by a manual crushing method.

3.3.2 Flake ice

This type of machine forms ice 2 to 3 mm thick on the surface of a cooled cylinder and the ice is harvested as dry subcooled flakes usually 100 to 1,000 mm2 in area. In some models, the cylinder or drum rotates and the scraper on the outer surface remains stationary. In others, the scraper rotates and removes the ice from the surface of a stationary drum, in this case built in the form of a double-walled cylinder. One distinct advantage of the rotating drum method is that the ice-forming surfaces and the ice release mechanism are exposed and the operator can observe whether the plant is operating satisfactorily. The flakes are usually either bagged directly in plastic bags and stored in a chiller or collected and stored in an automated bin or silo. Human contact with the ice is minimal. 3.3.3 Tube ice


Tube ice is formed on the inner surface of vertical tubes and is produced in the form of small hollow cylinders of about 50 x 50 mm with a wall thickness of 10 to 12 mm. The tube ice plant arrangement is similar to a shell and tube condenser with the water on the inside of the tubes and the refrigerant filling the space between the tubes. The machine is operated automatically on a time cycle, and the tubes of ice are released by a hot gas defrost process. As the ice drops from the tubes a cutter chops the ice into suitable lengths, nominally 50 mm, but this is adjustable. Transport of the ice to the storage area is usually automatic. Thus, as in the flake ice plant, the harvesting and storage operations require no manual effort or operator attendance. Tube ice is usually stored in the form it is harvested, but the particle size is rather large and unsuitable for use with fish. Self-contained units, Figure 21, with a rating of up to 10 to 20 tonnes/24 hours can be located within the floor space required for storage, with the icemaker and refrigeration equipment on top.

3.4 Ice storage


3.4.1 Block ice stores 3.4.2 Bin storage 3.4.3 Silo storage Ice manufacture and demand rates are seldom in phase, therefore storage is necessary to ensure that the plant caters for peak demand. Storage allows the ice maker to be operated 24 hours per day. It also acts as a buffer against any interruption to the ice supply due to minor breakdowns and routine maintenance procedures. 3.4.1 Block ice stores


Block ice cannot be stored in silos or bins unless the ice is crushed beforehand. This type of ice is therefore stored in block form in refrigerated rooms. Refrigerated rooms should be professionally designed and constructed so as not to allow contact of the stored ice with unauthorised persons or domestic animals. The floor should be a seamless-type floor with no cracks or joints. Persons handling the ice in the store should wear rubber boots and gloves. A conventional block ice plant would also have a considerable amount of extra storage in the ice making unit, since it is usual to maintain the ice cans filled, even when demand has fallen below the plant's rated capacity.

Bin storage may mean anything from a box holding no more than 500 kg to a large installation of 1,000 tons or more. Bin storage can be used for any type of ice and may incorporate a separate cooling system. Whatever the size of system used, ice storage should always be within an insulated structure since the saving made by reducing ice meltage, particularly in warmer climates, is always worth the extra cost of the insulation. An insulation thickness of 50 to 75 mm of polystyrene or its equivalent in one of the many other suitable types of insulation, is suggested. Small bins may be arranged with the icemaker above the storage space, Figure 21; the bin is filled by gravity and a FIFO system is operated by removing the ice at a low level. This simple bin system is suitable for processors making and using their own ice. Bins of up to about 50 tons capacity can be constructed without a mechanical unloading system. This type of storage would usually be a high structure with a sloping base and access to dislodge compacted ice. Any ice left undisturbed for a few days will compact and fuse together. Ice which is free flowing when used daily may require a mechanical unloading system if used infrequently.

3.4.3 Silo storage


Silo storage is generally used with a free-flowing subcooled ice such as flake ice and, in order to be effective, it must have an independent cooling system to maintain the ice in this subcooled condition. The cooling is usually by means of an air cooler in the jacket space between the silo and the outer insulated structure. The air cooler is normally placed at the top of the jacket space adjacent to the ice maker and the air space is cooled by gravity or fan circulation. Ice is collected by gravity flow with the aid of a chain agitator which scrapes the ice from the walls of the silo. The silo allows for a first-in-first-out (FIFO) system of storage but, if the storage space is not cleared periodically, only the central core of ice is used, leaving a permanent outer wall of compacted ice, Figure 22. An access hatch should therefore be provided at the top of the silo so that a pole can be inserted to collapse the outer wall of ice into the central core at least once daily. Silo storage is expensive for small quantities of ice and although units are made for as little as 10 tons, this method of storage is more suited for storing 40 to 100 tons of ice. Tube ice is usually stored in the form it is harvested, but the particle size is rather large and unsuitable for use with fish. Self-contained units, Figure 21, with a rating of up to 10 to 20 tonnes/24 hours can be located within the floor space required for storage, with the icemaker and refrigeration equipment on top.

3.4 Ice storage

Storage allows the ice maker to be operated 24 hours per day. It also acts as a buffer against any interruption to the ice supply due to minor breakdowns and routine maintenance procedures. 3.4.1 Block ice stores


Block ice cannot be stored in silos or bins unless the ice is crushed beforehand. This type of ice is therefore stored in block form in refrigerated rooms. Refrigerated rooms should be professionally designed and constructed so as not to allow contact of the stored ice with unauthorised persons or domestic animals. The floor should be a seamless-type floor with no cracks or joints. Persons handling the ice in the store should wear rubber boots and gloves. A conventional block ice plant would also have a considerable amount of extra storage in the ice making unit, since it is usual to maintain the ice cans filled, even when demand has fallen below the plant's rated capacity.

Bin storage may mean anything from a box holding no more than 500 kg to a large installation of 1,000 tons or more. Bin storage can be used for any type of ice and may incorporate a separate cooling system. Whatever the size of system used, ice storage should always be within an insulated structure since the saving made by reducing ice meltage, particularly in warmer climates, is always worth the extra cost of the insulation. An insulation thickness of 50 to 75 mm of polystyrene or its equivalent in one of the many other suitable types of insulation, is suggested. Small bins may be arranged with the icemaker above the storage space, Figure 21; the bin is filled by gravity and a FIFO system is operated by removing the ice at a low level. This simple bin system is suitable for processors making and using their own ice. Bins of up to about 50 tons capacity can be constructed without a mechanical unloading system. This type of storage would usually be a high structure with a sloping base and access to dislodge compacted ice. Any ice left undisturbed for a few days will compact and fuse together. Ice which is free flowing when used daily may require a mechanical unloading system if used infrequently.

3.4.3 Silo storage


Silo storage is generally used with a free-flowing subcooled ice such as flake ice and, in order to be effective, it must have an independent cooling system to maintain the ice in this subcooled condition. The cooling is usually by means of an air cooler in the jacket space between the silo and the outer insulated structure. The air cooler is normally placed at the top of the jacket space adjacent to the ice maker and the air space is cooled by gravity or fan circulation. Ice is collected by gravity flow with the aid of a chain agitator which scrapes the ice from the walls of the silo. The silo allows for a first-in-first-out (FIFO) system of storage but, if the storage space is not cleared periodically, only the central core of ice is used, leaving a permanent outer wall of compacted ice, Figure 22. An access hatch should therefore be provided at the top of the silo so that a pole can be inserted to collapse the outer wall of ice into the central core at least once daily. Silo storage is expensive for small quantities of ice and although units are made for as little as 10 tons, this method of storage is more suited for storing 40 to 100 tons of ice. 3.1.1 Borewells 3.1.2 Sea water An adequate supply of good quality water is a fundamental requirement for fishery harbours, whether the water is used for drinking, cleaning the fish, ice making or fish processing. Where municipal supply of potable water is limited, other sources need to be investigated - including the use of harbour basin water or sea water for certain uses. To plan the water supply system for a fishery harbour, it is necessary to estimate the peak demand for water which is a direct function of the peak landings; the number of fishing vessels using the harbour; the number of port

The gross daily volume for item (a) should be increased by 25% to cover seasonal peaks and volume for items (b) and (c) may be reduced by 50% if high pressure cleaning systems are used. Some common sources of water in fishery harbours are from borewells, rain water collection tanks and pumped sea water. Recent advances in desalination equipment to convert sea water to potable water constitute an option worth investigating.

3.1.1 Borewells
The geological investigation of the sub-strata is generally carried out by a specialist sub-contractor. More than one borehole may be required for complete assessment and the depth need not depend on the local water table. There are instances where shallow borewells may produce contaminated or brackish water, and a deeper well taps into a submerged freshwater aquifer. The major geo-technical requirement is to verify the porosity of the substratum as this will determine the maximum rate of extraction of water. In coastal areas, overextraction of fresh water from the underground water table has often caused the water to become saline through intrusion of sea water. When sea water is used for cleaning purposes, care should be taken to avoid sea water runoff entering the sewage treatment system. The pumps should be suitable for sea water. Sand excluding filter is required for sea water suction from sandy beaches. Flash distillation is relatively inexpensive if heat from a generator can be extracted via the circulating cooling system of the diesel engine. Typically, the system consists of a spherical steel container connected to a vacuum pump with heating coils circulating hot water from the engine's cooling system. The vacuum pump lowers the boiling point of water, thus making the sea water boil. Potable water is distilled off from the top and pumped to a storage tank. The major disadvantage is the frequent descaling required to remove encrustations in the distilling tank. The preferred method of desalination nowadays is by reverse osmosis. This process consists of pumping sea water at very high pressure against a special

osmotic membrane rolled up inside a steel cylinder. The membrane allows only fresh water to pass through. The type of water storage facility depends on the quantity to be stored as tabled below.

3.3.1 Block ice 3.3.2 Flake ice 3.3.3 Tube ice Whether an ice plant is actually required inside the port area depends very much on local conditions. Other ice plants in town may be a reliable source of suitable ice and, even with the additional transport costs and the manufacturer's profit thrown in, they may be able to supply ice cheaper than it can be made by the user. A large installation has many economic advantages over a small unit and it is not unreasonable to expect that it can produce cheaper ice. Other

factors, such as being financially self sufficient, may over-ride an economic disadvantage. In addition to water supply and storage, a harbour manager should also be conversant with the manufacture, supply and storage of ice as this product, if contaminated at source (either through contaminated water supplies or through human contact during the manufacturing process), has the potential to contaminate entire fish landings; see also Chapter 2. Ice is usually manufactured in block, flake or tube form.

3.3.1 Block ice


The traditional block ice maker forms the ice in cans which are submerged in a tank containing circulating sodium or calcium chloride brine. The dimensions of the can and the temperature of the brine are usually selected to give a freezing period of between 8 and 24 hours. Too rapid freezing results in brittle ice. The block weight can vary from 12 to 150 kg, depending on requirements; 150 kg is considered the largest size of block one man can conveniently handle. The thicker the block the longer the freezing time. Blocks less than 150 mm thick are easily broken and a thickness of 150 to 170 mm is preferable to prevent the block toppling. The size of the tank required is related to the daily production. A travelling crane lifts a row of cans and transports them to a thawing tank at the end of the freezing tank, where they are submerged in water to release the ice from the moulds. The cans are tipped to remove the blocks, refilled with fresh water and replaced in the brine tank for a further cycle. This type of plant often requires continuous attention. A shift system is operated by the labour force - 10 to 15 workers for a 100 t/day plant. Block ice plants require a good deal of space and labour for handling the ice. The latter factor has been the main reason for the development of modern automatic ice-making equipment (flake and tube ice). Compared to other types of ice plants, block ice plants are more prone to producing contaminated ice if high hygiene standards are not scrupulously observed at all times. Block ice still has a use, and sometimes an advantage, over other forms of ice in tropical countries. Storage, handling and transport can all be simplified if the ice is in the form of large blocks; simplification is often obligatory in small-scale fisheries and in relatively remote situations. With an appropriate ice-crushing machine, block ice can be reduced to any particle size but the uniformity of size will not be as good as that achieved with some other forms of ice. In some situations, block ice may also be reduced in size by a manual crushing method.

3.3.2 Flake ice

This type of machine forms ice 2 to 3 mm thick on the surface of a cooled cylinder and the ice is harvested as dry subcooled flakes usually 100 to 1,000 mm2 in area. In some models, the cylinder or drum rotates and the scraper on the outer surface remains stationary. In others, the scraper rotates and removes the ice from the surface of a stationary drum, in this case built in the form of a double-walled cylinder. One distinct advantage of the rotating drum method is that the ice-forming surfaces and the ice release mechanism are exposed and the operator can observe whether the plant is operating satisfactorily. The flakes are usually either bagged directly in plastic bags and stored in a chiller or collected and stored in an automated bin or silo. Human contact with the ice is minimal. 3.3.3 Tube ice


Tube ice is formed on the inner surface of vertical tubes and is produced in the form of small hollow cylinders of about 50 x 50 mm with a wall thickness of 10 to 12 mm. The tube ice plant arrangement is similar to a shell and tube condenser with the water on the inside of the tubes and the refrigerant filling the space between the tubes. The machine is operated automatically on a time cycle, and the tubes of ice are released by a hot gas defrost process. As the ice drops from the tubes a cutter chops the ice into suitable lengths, nominally 50 mm, but this is adjustable. Transport of the ice to the storage area is usually automatic. Thus, as in the flake ice plant, the harvesting and storage operations require no manual effort or operator attendance. Tube ice is usually stored in the form it is harvested, but the particle size is rather large and unsuitable for use with fish. Self-contained units, Figure 21, with a rating of up to 10 to 20 tonnes/24 hours can be located within the floor space required for storage, with the icemaker and refrigeration equipment on top.

factors, such as being financially self sufficient, may over-ride an economic disadvantage. In addition to water supply and storage, a harbour manager should also be conversant with the manufacture, supply and storage of ice as this product, if contaminated at source (either through contaminated water supplies or through human contact during the manufacturing process), has the potential to contaminate entire fish landings; see also Chapter 2. Contaminated ice has been linked to serious outbreaks of cholera in at least one ASEAN country. Table 3-3: GUIDELINES FOR ESTIMATING ICE REQUIREMENTS

Ice is usually manufactured in block, flake or tube form.

3.3.1 Block ice


The traditional block ice maker forms the ice in cans which are submerged in a tank containing circulating sodium or calcium chloride brine. The dimensions of the can and the temperature of the brine are usually selected to give a freezing period of between 8 and 24 hours. Too rapid freezing results in brittle ice. The block weight can vary from 12 to 150 kg, depending on requirements; 150 kg is considered the largest size of block one man can conveniently handle. The thicker the block the longer the freezing time. Blocks less than 150 mm thick are easily broken and a thickness of 150 to 170 mm is preferable to prevent the block toppling. The size of the tank required is related to the daily production. A travelling crane lifts a row of cans and transports them to a thawing tank at the end of the freezing tank, where they are submerged in water to release the ice from the moulds. The cans are tipped to remove the blocks, refilled with fresh water and replaced in the brine tank for a further cycle. This type of plant often requires continuous attention. A shift system is operated by the labour force - 10 to 15 workers for a 100 t/day plant. Block ice plants require a good deal of space and labour for handling the ice. The latter factor has been the main reason for the development of modern automatic ice-making equipment (flake and tube ice). Compared to other types of ice plants, block ice plants are more prone to producing contaminated ice if high hygiene standards are not scrupulously observed at all times. Block ice still has a use, and sometimes an advantage, over other forms of ice in tropical countries. Storage, handling and transport can all be simplified if the ice is in the form of large blocks; simplification is often obligatory in small-scale fisheries and in relatively remote situations. With an appropriate ice-crushing machine, block ice can be reduced to any particle size but the uniformity of size will not be as good as that achieved with some other forms of ice. In some situations, block ice may also be reduced in size by a manual crushing method.

This type of machine forms ice 2 to 3 mm thick on the surface of a cooled cylinder and the ice is harvested as dry subcooled flakes usually 100 to 1,000 mm2 in area. In some models, the cylinder or drum rotates and the scraper on the outer surface remains stationary. In others, the scraper rotates and removes the ice from the surface of a stationary drum, in this case built in the form of a double-walled cylinder. One distinct advantage of the rotating drum method is that the ice-forming surfaces and the ice release mechanism are exposed and the operator can observe whether the plant is operating satisfactorily. The flakes are usually either bagged directly in plastic bags and stored in a chiller or collected and stored in an automated bin or silo. Human contact with the ice is minimal. 3.3.3 Tube ice


Tube ice is formed on the inner surface of vertical tubes and is produced in the form of small hollow cylinders of about 50 x 50 mm with a wall thickness of 10 to 12 mm. The tube ice plant arrangement is similar to a shell and tube condenser with the water on the inside of the tubes and the refrigerant filling the space between the tubes. The machine is operated automatically on a time cycle, and the tubes of ice are released by a hot gas defrost process. As the ice drops from the tubes a cutter chops the ice into suitable lengths, nominally 50 mm, but this is adjustable. Transport of the ice to the storage area is usually automatic. Thus, as in the flake ice plant, the harvesting and storage operations require no manual effort or operator attendance. Tube ice is usually stored in the form it is harvested, but the particle size is rather large and unsuitable for use with fish. Self-contained units, Figure 21, with a rating of up to 10 to 20 tonnes/24 hours can be located within the floor space required for storage, with the icemaker and refrigeration equipment on top.

3.4 Ice storage


3.4.1 Block ice stores 3.4.2 Bin storage 3.4.3 Silo storage Ice manufacture and demand rates are seldom in phase, therefore storage is necessary to ensure that the plant caters for peak demand. Storage allows the ice maker to be operated 24 hours per day. It also acts as a buffer against any interruption to the ice supply due to minor breakdowns and routine maintenance procedures. 3.4.1 Block ice stores


Block ice cannot be stored in silos or bins unless the ice is crushed beforehand. This type of ice is therefore stored in block form in refrigerated rooms. Refrigerated rooms should be professionally designed and constructed so as not to allow contact of the stored ice with unauthorised persons or domestic animals. The floor should be a seamless-type floor with no cracks or joints. Persons handling the ice in the store should wear rubber boots and gloves. A conventional block ice plant would also have a considerable amount of extra storage in the ice making unit, since it is usual to maintain the ice cans filled, even when demand has fallen below the plant's rated capacity.

Bin storage may mean anything from a box holding no more than 500 kg to a large installation of 1,000 tons or more. Bin storage can be used for any type of ice and may incorporate a separate cooling system. Whatever the size of system used, ice storage should always be within an insulated structure since the saving made by reducing ice meltage, particularly in warmer climates, is always worth the extra cost of the insulation. An insulation thickness of 50 to 75 mm of polystyrene or its equivalent in one of the many other suitable types of insulation, is suggested. Small bins may be arranged with the icemaker above the storage space, Figure 21; the bin is filled by gravity and a FIFO system is operated by removing the ice at a low level. This simple bin system is suitable for processors making and using their own ice. Bins of up to about 50 tons capacity can be constructed without a mechanical unloading system. This type of storage would usually be a high structure with a sloping base and access to dislodge compacted ice. Any ice left undisturbed for a few days will compact and fuse together. Ice which is free flowing when used daily may require a mechanical unloading system if used infrequently.

3.4.3 Silo storage


Silo storage is generally used with a free-flowing subcooled ice such as flake ice and, in order to be effective, it must have an independent cooling system to maintain the ice in this subcooled condition. The cooling is usually by means of an air cooler in the jacket space between the silo and the outer insulated structure. The air cooler is normally placed at the top of the jacket space adjacent to the ice maker and the air space is cooled by gravity or fan circulation. Ice is collected by gravity flow with the aid of a chain agitator which scrapes the ice from the walls of the silo. The silo allows for a first-in-first-out (FIFO) system of storage but, if the storage space is not cleared periodically, only the central core of ice is used, leaving a permanent outer wall of compacted ice, Figure 22. An access hatch should therefore be provided at the top of the silo so that a pole can be inserted to collapse the outer wall of ice into the central core at least once daily. Silo storage is expensive for small quantities of ice and although units are made for as little as 10 tons, this method of storage is more suited for storing 40 to 100 tons of ice.
