Research Question
For Salt Lake Community College students on campus, is the consumption of caffeinated beverages related to the number of hours of sleep in 24-hour period?

Purpose of Study
Our group chose to survey students at Salt Lake Community College to determine if there is a relationship between the amount of caffeinated beverages consumed per day and the average amount of hours slept per day.

Data Collection
We used a survey questionnaire, asking how many ounces of caffeinated beverages are consumed in a day and average amount of hours slept a day. We systematically selected individuals by choosing a random number between 1 and 10 and surveying that person and then every 10th person after that, ensuring that our sample would be randomized. We surveyed students at the Redwood, South City, and Jordan campuses.

First Quantitative Variable

Mean: 26.1282 Standard Deviation: 27.4706 Five number summary: 0, 8, 18, 36, 128 Range: 128 Mode: 0 Outliners: 80, 84, 90, 128

1ST Data set - Ounces of Caffeine consumed in a 24 hour period: Mean = 26.13 ounces Standard deviation=27.29 Five number summary = 0,8,18,36,128 Range = 128 Mode = 0 Outliers = 80,84,90,128

Second Quantitative Variable

Mean: 6.5128 Standard Deviation: 1.3483 Five number summary: 3.5, 5, 6, 7.5, 9 Range: 5.5 Mode: 6 Outliners: None

2nd Data set Hours of sleep in a 24 hour period: Mean = 6.51 hours Standard deviation=1.34 Five number summary = 3.5,5,6.25,7.5,9 Range = 5.5 Mode = 6 Outliers = No outliers

The linear correlation coefficient is -.1378 The equation for line of regression is: y= -.006x+6.688

The correlation between these two variables was only -.006 which is very near zero as to say there is only a slight relationship between them. The critical value for this sample size is .2245 which also shows there is no real relationship between these two variables.

Conclusion
There is not a statistically significant relationship between the amount of caffeine a person consumes and the hours of sleep they receive since the correlation coefficient was less than the critical value, therefore cannot be confident that a relationship exists. There are other possible lurking variables to consider as well when understanding a persons sleeping habits.

The sample does reflect the population because a systematic sample was used to obtain the population of SLCC student and most of the campuses were covered at different times and days. Our group was able to limit the amount of convenience sampling as much as possible to limit bias.

If given a second chance at repeating this project there would be more randomizing, such as the day of the week and times of the day to collect the data to make our samples less convenience based.
