WHAT IS DRY WALL?

Dry wall [drahywawl] 1. a. an interior wall or partition finished in a dry material, usually in the form of prefabricated sheets or panels nailed to studs, as distinguished from one that is plastered. b. a material, as wallboard or plasterboard, used for such a wall. 2. a masonry or stone wall laid up without mortar. HISTORY Sackett Board U.S. Gypsum Company invented drywall in 1916, then called as Sackett Board

Around WWII time labor cost increased & Dry wall installation evolved as the solution
By 1945 it was one the dominant building material Now, drywall construction offers fast wall construction with additional benefits of fire resistance, sound insulation etc.

TYPES OF DRY WALL PANELS

Regular white board, from 1/4" to 3/4" thickness Fireresistant ("Type X"), wallboard provide increased fire rating. Often perlite, vermiculite and boric acid are added to improve fire resistance. Greenboard, the drywall that contains an oilbased additive in the green colored paper covering that provides moisture resistance. Cement board, which is more waterresistant than greenboard, for use in showers or sauna rooms, and as a base for ceramic tile soundboard is made from wood fibers to increase the sound rating (STC) Enviroboard, a board made from recycled agricultural materials EcoRock, a drywall that uses a combination of 20 materials including recycled fly ash, slag, kiln dust and fillers and no starch cellulose; it is advertised as being environmentally friendly due to the use of recycled materials.

ADVANTAGES OF DRY WALL

Cost Saving due to Material Cost Light weight material lighter structure Fast construction Less labor requirements compared to conventional method Better Performance Higher fire resistance properties Better sound insulation Mold resistant/Bacterial resistant properties

Better Design Capability Higher design flexibility delayed design decisions Environment friendly material recyclable

LIMITATIONS OF DRY WALL

Inadequate supply of skilled labours leading to poor workmanship Non load bearing nature. Difficult to carry compared to bricks/blocks due to possibility of cracking Perceived as weak walls resistance from flat owners for applications in residential projects As this type of construction is recent in the Indian Construction market, competent service provider as not readily available.
