8745 Government Street, Phase 6, Home Dedication Celebration

ON JUNE 27, 2013 corporate partners, volunteers, staff and families gathered to unite six new partner families, including sixteen children, with keys to their new homes at our Home Dedication Celebration. This day was as much a celebration of our volunteers, donors, and community partners as it was for our families. Without their time, materials, and funds, these homes would not have been built. An enormous Thank You was shared with BC Housing, Vancity, The Vancity Community Foundation, and The Home Depot for their significant partnerships and their roles in the completion of Phase 6. Through their support, our families will be able to settle into their new homes prior to the start of the 2013/14 school year. Community Investments, all expressed their happiness at seeing this day arrive and reinforced their commitment to supporting Habitat for Humanity. As a small token of our appreciation, each received our Key of Hope box, constructed from re-purposed Habitat pallets, as a reminder of what their generosity means. A special thank you was also extended to Mitchell and Kirsty Baker of Karnak Pro Builders for facilitating the efficient and expedited completion of our homes. Carl Eden and Al Deby have helped build all six phases at Government Street; incredible superstar volunteers that are not only hard workers, but two of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Elizabeth Neufeld, Gail Clark, Wayne Carrick, and Wayne Stewart have also put in multiple years and thousands of hours toward the completion of this last phase. We recognized these special build site volunteers and are still in awe of their efforts. continued on page 2

Onsite for this great milestone, Habitat awarded her with our first ever Honourary Lifetime Membership. as he was presented with a gold painted framing hammer used to build our families homes. A fitting symbol of what we can achieve when we work together. Prior to our special guests and speakers handing the keys to our partner families, we initiated a Passing of the Hammer tradition as we called up Acting Mayor Linda McPhail from the City of Richmond to receive a Habitat for Humanity blue and green baby hammer from Mayor Corrigan, representing our transition to our next build and municipal partnership in Richmond, BC. n

THE TITLE TRANSFER of a 25,000 square foot parcel of land on Ash Street in Richmond to Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver represents more than just an opportunity to do another affordable housing project. It represents a new era and a breakthrough in demonstrating that affordable home ownership is possible despite high land and construction costs, according to Tim Clark, the Interim CEO of HFHGV. The Government of British Columbia and the Ministry of Housing, announced the land transfer at a special ceremony on January 27th, 2013 in Richmond. The plans call for the construction of six affordable homes with affordable rental suites to keep mortgage costs low. In total, twelve families will be given a chance to thrive and not just survive.

Our Board, staff, volunteers, donors and the entire Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver organization is committed to making this project a showpiece, demonstrating that affordable family homes can be built in any neighbourhood in Metro Vancouver, remarks Tim Clark. Habitat for Humanitys mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty. n

Genworth Canada Boosts Playground Challenge

partners, like Genworth, our playground fund goal was met. Not only did Genworth Canada Vancouver employees make a major financial contribution, they also helped construct it. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Greater Vancouver launched an online appeal to raise the funds to build a new playground for children living at our Burnaby townhome complex. The previous playground was built more than a decade ago and was in need of replacement. The Playground Challenge campaign had a goal of $25,000. Through the support of several fundrasiers and key corporate Genworth Canada announced earlier this year a commitment of $12,500 to our Government Street playground fund, which made up half our playground fund goal! Narrinder Dhanoya-Bhangu, VicePresident of Genworth Canadas Pacific Region, adds that the Vancouver employee group was pleased to allocate money from its community fund to support the playground. Genworth Canada is very active in supporting Habitat builds across the country and our Vancouver team enjoyed participating in the building of this playground for the children at Government Street. Genworth Canada is a leading private sector supplier of mortgage default insurance in Canada. The company works with lenders, mortgage brokers, real estate agents and builders to make homeownership more accessible for Canadians from coast to coast. Forty-one children from the 27-unit townhomes now have a fun and safe place to play. Thank you Genworth Canada and to all that made this possible. n

An Unsung Hero at the Burnaby Townhome Project

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Greater Vancouver is appreciative of all the support it has received to complete our Burnaby townhome project. We would like to highlight a long-time partner who was instrumental in making our completion possible. B.A. Robinson, a plumbing and heating specialist company, is a member of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH), a national sponsor of Habitat for Humanity. Over the years CIPH has provided vouchers to their local members who have generously provided many of the plumbing fixtures needed to complete the Habitat homes. This has enabled Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver to access the plumbing stock of B.A. Robinson for the Burnaby site. B.A. Robinson, donated skilled labour and quality heating and plumbing fixtures and when the CIPH vouchers did not cover the cost of materials, B.A. Robinson approached other suppliers and manufacturers to get the materials donated. We owe a big thank you to Randy Kolstad and his entire team at B.A. Robinson, says Tim Clark, Interim CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. Randy Kolstad, an incredible Habitat supporter, is the past president and current executive member of the B.C. CIPH chapter. n

Building a Great Wall for Habitat

THE NILEX CORPORATE GROUP is an expert at supplying materials and designs for retaining walls. They are also a supporter of Habitat for Humanity in B.C. and in other Canadian Provinces. When Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver needed to build a strong, visually-appealing retaining wall on sloping land at the back of its Phase Six development on Government Street, it was natural to approach Nilex for help. There was no hesitation from Nilex, a Burnaby-based business, to donate both the state of the art materials and designs for construction. Nilex employees were on site to help ensure a beautiful finished product. Nilex is one of Canadas leading engineering firms specializing in roads, erosion control, retaining walls, drainage control and landscaping. The company also develops and manufactures its own line of products and technologies to support its work. n

Gordon Foods Employees Empty Pockets for Habitat

THE EMPLOYEES at the head office of Gordon Food Services (GFS) on Annacis Island are big supporters of Habitat for Humanity, and a prominent display in their reception area demonstrates their commitment. Through employee payroll donations, BBQs and special events, their donations have surpassed $60,000, making their employees the leading fundraising employee groups across the country. As a national sponsor, in addition to raising money from employee donations, they also participate in Habitat for Humanity builds across Canada. HFHGV Interim CEO, Tim Clark added that Habitat for Humanity greatly appreciates the dedication and commitment of the GFS employees. Were excited to be teaming with the employees of Gordon Food Services and always enjoy their participation in fundraising events and our community build days. n

MCI Build Day Volunteers are Profiled in HFHGV Video

MCI IS A GLOBAL leader in communications and event management and their employees are also committed to getting out into the community to make a difference. For a day of construction duty, volunteers from Vancouvers MCI office worked on the Burnaby townhome project to help complete the build.

A videographer followed the MCI group for their build day and chronicled the camaraderie, the humour, and the hard, demanding physical labor that goes with a day on the construction site. We thank all our corporate build day partners who helped us complete the six townhomes for partner families.

iQmetrix Backs North America Habitat Build Blitz

VANCOUVER EMPLOYEES of iQmetrix joined counterparts in three other North American cities, Regina, Winnipeg, and Charlotte (North Carolina), for a one-day Habitat for Humanity building blitz in late December, 2012. Jacquie Scarlett, a senior sales executive at iQmetrix in Vancouver, reports that the team had an amazing build day despite the cold snowy weather. It was great to contribute to such an important cause and spend some quality time with co-workers. As a bonus, we learned a lot about construction tools and how to use them. iQmetrix is a leading provider of retail management solutions for the North American wireless industry. They believe in giving back to the community and have partnered with Habitat for Humanity in the past building homes in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. n

It was All Hands on Deck, but not in the traditional sense of the Canadian Navy!
THE CANADIAN NAVY and the Pacific fleet connected with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver for three days of amazing memories. Twelve of our longstanding volunteers of HFHGV were recognized by the Navy with a once in a lifetime ship tour and sailing. They joined other non-profit guests on special sailing from Esquimalt to Vancouver aboard HMCS Algonquin. Following their arrival in Vancouver, eleven sailors from the Royal Canadian Navy spent a full day indoors sharing their time and energy to paint the Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver office. This means that those working on behalf of our partner families now sea blue rather than blah beige! Fantastic makeover! The Navy didnt stop there. They also hosted a wonderful evening reception, on board HMCS Algonquin, for the Community Partners of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. We were honoured to be able to thank those who are instrumental in our ability to build affordable homes for families in need. To the men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy, thank you for your service to our country and to our community! n

Volunteers on a Mission to Serve

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY volunteers are committed to our cause, and many of them have years of sweat and toil to prove it. In this issue of the Blueprint we recognize Gail Clark and Carl Eden at the Burnaby build site; and Shea Henry at the Burnaby ReStore. Year after year they come out to volunteer, often in inclement weather, and never lose their smile or their enthusiasm. Its this kind of volunteerism that helps Habitat for Humanity continue to make a difference in the lives of low-income families, giving access to affordable homeownership. n

AL RALPH joined us in 2007, and has generously volunteered over 5,600 hours of his time. Al was one of the first volunteers in line when the store opened its doors. At least three days a week youll find him at his own workbench at the Vancouver ReStore where his specialty is repairing and rejuvenating donated merchandize in need of refurbishing before it can go on the shelves. Without volunteers like Al, we could not continue to build. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver is in need of ReStore volunteers and looking for people able to help fill the positions of: 1. JUNE 23RD marked the 5th annual IDI Garage Sale at our new North Vancouver ReStore location. The early risers lined up down the block and found fantastic deals on couches, carpeting, linens, chairs, tables and more.
