our prominent Jamaican nationals are seeking political offices in New York City, while a fifth with deep connections to the island has abandoned his quest for higher office. St Mary-born attorney-atlaw Joan Flowers, real estate broker Lenford Edie also of St. Mary, Michael Duncan from Kingston are seeking seats on the New York City Council, while Kingston-born businessman Mark Escoffery-Bey is running to become Bronx borough president. All four have conquered the first hurdle-obtaining the needed signatures required by the New York City Board of Elections to get on the ballot. They will now face the Democratic primary elections, set for September 10, with the hope of making it through to the general elections in November. Flowers, who will be facing five other candidates, lists education, health care, affordable housing and employment opportunities as "areas of priority," if she is elected to the council. Flowers, who would become the first woman to represent the 27 council district if elected, has served the community in various capacities, but especially from a

ews surfaced in The New York Post last week that thousands of New Yorkers are regularly shipping groceries purchased from their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Benefits (formerly known as Food Stamps) to family members and other loved ones living in countries like Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, where living conditions are generally poor. The reports also alleged that large barrels filled with subsidized goods like rice, beans, and sausages are routinely shipped to the Caribbean effectively diverting resources that are intended for poor Americans. However, there are some 46.7 million Americans on The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program with almost an equal percent white (38.8 %) and black (39.8 %) and perhaps less than 2% from the Caribbean and Dominican Republic.

Food is the staff of life for people!

These recipients who are buying groceries with their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards and packing them in barrels for the trip overseas are not in violation of Federal laws, but insignificant when compare to the millions being used to purchase alcohol, cigarettes or exchange for cash. Furthermore, according to a recent World Bank study on The Caribbean Diaspora: A source for venture investment, a large percent of the Caribbean people are affluent with either net investable wealth or annual incomes in excess of USD100,000. This income is held primarily in cash savings and real estate. In addition, they are also well educated with 80 percent holding a bachelors degree or higher. their own businesses. Since most of these people earn more than the stipulated $1,000 per week, only a small percent of Caribbean people would be welfare recipients. We could therefore conclude that the abuse of EBT cards is insignificant among the Caribbean people. The New York Post should therefore focus on other people who are abusing the Federal food aid services. Nevertheless, we must understand that a large percent of the people from the Caribbean regions immigrated for economic reasons and would therefore have families back home who are depending on them to provide food shelter and clothing. It should not be a problem if individuals who qualify for federal food aid, ship a portion to their needy families at home as long as no laws are violated. But, food is the staff of life for people anywhere in the world.

he other day, a client requested a particular type of teacher. Too embarrassed to ask the teacher if he or she fits this description, I used Google as a form of SOS. Thanks to social media, I was able to get a description of the teachers. This left me thinking that in 2013, "does our appearance matter in landing that great career or closing that big business deal?" Have you ever heard the phrase you never get a second chance to make a first impression? Due to the posted photos these applicants have on Facebook, I could not refer them for the job that they are probably more than qualified to do. The overall impression begins, and in some cases ends, with your appearance. The moment you walk into an interview, the interviewer forms an initial impression based on your appearance. When you have a chance to interview for a job that you want, it is important that you do everything that you can to make a positive impression. You are self-employed, so who cares about your appearance? Your appearance still matters. Blue collar outfits can't be worn for a white collar career and visaversa. According to Melinda Emerson, Ways to Boost Your Small Business, Branding & Marketing, when you run a small business, you are selling yourself.

BRONx: ast week, the Bronx District Attorneys Office began a new grand jury process to consider re-indicting Richard Haste, the NYPD officer who killed Ramarley Graham in his Bronx home on Feb. 2, 2012. This forward progress in the Haste case comes on the heels of the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who in the same month killed a different black youth in Florida Trayvon Martin. Soon after Grahams killing last year, a Bronx grand jury indicted Haste on two counts of manslaughter; the first indictment of an NYPD officer for killing a civilian since 2007. However, this past May, Judge Steven Barrett dismissed the indictment due to an error made by Assistant District Attorney Nancy Borko when instructing jurors. Now the process has begun again. The new grand jury will hear witness statements and consider evidence against Haste over the next several weeks behind closed doors. It will conclude with a decision to either reindict Haste or let him walk free. According to Civil Rights leaders and Grahams supporters, racial profiling, the

MOUNT VERNON: hree people were stabbed and four others face charges ranging from weapons possession to obstructing police efforts during a melee at the Mount Vernon Catering Hall, 4 N. 3rd Avenue, Mount Vernon on Saturday (August 2) According to police reports an officer on patrol came upon a large disturbance in front of the hall and observed an individual in possession of a handgun. As the officer attempted to investigate, the crowd became unruly. Additional Mount Vernon Police Officers responded along with Officers from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Police Department. Once order was restored it was learned that three male victims, ranging in age from fifteen to twenty years old were stabbed

Law enforcement sources say Marquez admitted he posted the ad looking to sell a two-month old baby for $100. Marquez lives in a complex in Castleton Corners. According to sources he and the baby's mother briefly dated, and he placed the ad because he was angry she stopped paying attention to him. Prosecutors say Marquez gave the mother's phone number to at least one person who answered the ad. That person called the mother and made an offer to buy the child.

BRONx: arly Sunday morning, a rookie police officer shot and killed a 14-year-old boy who, according to police, fired a handgun at another male on a street in the Melrose section of the Bronx. Authorities say two officers on patrol heard gun shots just after 3 a.m. and ran to East 151st Street and Courtlandt Avenue, where they saw Shaaliver Douse, seen above left, chasing another male with a gun.

while inside the hall. The stabbing victims were transported to area hospitals and their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Dandre and Daquan Malcolm, both age 19 of Trenton, New Jersey were charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration. This is the second similar incident at the Mount Vernon Catering Hall this summer. On June 22nd a 19-year-old man was stabbed during a disturbance at the establishment. At that time responding officers encountered a disorderly group of approximately 100 people. That victim has since recovered from his injuries and has no arrest has been made. Anyone with information regarding either incident is asked to call the Mount Vernon Police Departments Detective Division at 914-665-2510.

After Douse fired at the pursued male, the officers identified themselves as police and ordered him to drop the gun. When Douse would not drop the weapon, one officer then fired a single shot and hit the teen in the lower left jaw. Douse was declared dead on the scene and police say they recovered his 9mm semi-automatic Astra A100, seen above right. Meanwhile, Douse family called the police account into question. Show me a gun that came from his hand," said Quwana Barcene, Douse's aunt.

By Patrick Maitland n Tuesday, August 5, the Campaign Finance Board allocated $23,296,484 million in the first public matching funds payments to 75 New York City candidates for the 2013 elections. New York Citys matching funds program provides public funds at a rate of $6to-$1 for the first $175 contributed by City residents, for a maximum of $1,050 in public funds per contributor. By Ken Richards BASSETERRE, St Kitts: amaica should not pull out of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) over trade differences with Trinidad and Tobago, according to former St Kitts and Nevis agriculture minister Cedric Liburd. Liburd is advocating discussions at the appropriate level to iron out the differences between these two leading CARICOM member states. No I dont think that any CARICOM country should really consider pulling out of CARICOM, he told WINN FM. All of us in the region do have our own concerns in some different way in terms of how CARICOM and how we operate in the past and sometimes some of us not benefiting, the former agriculture minister said, adding that the solution is not abandoning the regional grouping. Sometimes we have our differences but we need to find mechanisms to make sure

that we are able to make CARICOM work, Liburd responded when asked to comment on the situation. What Kingston regards as unfair trade practices benefiting Port of Spain has prompted former prime minister Andrew Holness and one of his parliamentary Jamaica Labour Party colleagues to advocate a temporary pullout of CARICOM. However, foreign affairs minister, AJ Nicholson said a withdrawal would affect benefits under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) that allows for the free movement of goods, skills, services and labour across the community. University of the West Indies lecturer Dickie Crawford said there is bitter anger in Kingston because there are some trade benefits that Trinidad and Tobago derives from the CARICOM legislation that Jamaica does not. He says the governments position not to pull out of CARICOM is commendable.

Kingston, Jamaica: r. Douglas Manley, a former member of the Jamaican Cabinet, died at his home in St. Andrew on Friday evening. Manley, a sociologist, followed his father's footsteps into politics and joined the cabinet of his more famous brother, Michael, who served twice as Prime Minister of Jamaica. Born in 1922, Douglas was the first son of National Hero Norman Washington Manley and Edna Manley, the famed sculptress, and older brother of Michael Manley. He served in Parliament for a period during the 1970s before returning to represent his old constituency, South Manchester, in 1989. During that second parliamentary stint he also served in the Cabinet as Minister of Youth & Community Development.

Oudit resigned from both posts on Tuesday. She told the media she resigned because the government is going down the wrong road of governance. She says they hold different philosophical views when it comes to politics and that they were on divergent paths. This is the third resignation that has undercut the Peoples Partnership government and the UNC, the leading partner in the coalition itself. Sitting member of parliament for St Joseph and former high court judge Herbert Volney, who was fired from the government in 2012 over the controversial section 34 legislation, also resigned his UNC membership on July 30. Warner convincingly won the UNC heartland seat in a by-election battle on July 29 for his newly formed ILP. More than just the ground shifting under the UNC and subsequently the government, it was a tectonic shift in the political landscape.

Understanding Child Support Issues C

hild Support may be defined as a payment that a noncustodial parent makes as a contribution to the costs of raising her or his child. In the mid-1990s, as never before, child support became a topic of urgent U.S. national discussion. Q. I am a parent who wants child support. How do I get it? A. When the parents are not together, and one of them has legal custody of the child, that parent can file a petition in Family Court to ask the other parent to pay child support. Q. What can I do if I disagree with the support order? A. You can file an "Objection." An Objection must be filed in court within 30 days of the date the court order was sent to you. The other parent will have a chance to reply to the Objection. The court will then make a decision on the Objection. The court might leave the order as is, or change it, or order more hearings. Q. And if I still disagree? A. Either parent has the right to appeal the Objection decision to a higher court. Talk to a clerk in the Family Court if you wish to do this.

LEGAL ISSUES
Q. My child's other parent won't pay the child support order that I have. What can I do?

JULY 19-31, 2013 STREET HYPE 7

Q. What happens when a child support case goes to court?

A. The parents must give the court their most recent tax returns. They must file pay stubs and tell what they earn and spend. The court will usually ask for proof of the expenses, such as for food, rent, clothing, medical costs, child care, and education. The court will listen to all of the evidence from both parents. It will then decide how much the parent who does not have custody has to pay for child support.

A. You may file a "Violation" petition in Family Court. There will be a hearing and the court will decide if there was a violation and what to do next. There are many things the court can do to a parent who doesn't pay a support order. For example: Order the Support Collection Unit (SCU) to take the payments from the parent's paycheck. Order a lump sum payment and/or payments over time on the money owed. Suspend the parent's driver's license and/or professional or business license. Jail the parent for up to six months for not paying just because the parent doesn't want to. You can use the free and easy DIY Form program to make your violation petition.

ome US businesses are now helping immigrants reach their dream of becoming Americans. Since last year, 19 companies have signed up to participate in the effort by the Washington-based National Immigration Forum to help more immigrants obtain US citizenship. Studies have shown that the process for immigrant workers to apply for US citizenship often takes longer because they can't afford the application fees and fear their English isn't good enough. As a result, a project called Bethlehem was created, focusing on low-wage workers, who often face additional hurdles to naturalization such as long hours and extensive commutes and who may lack the cash to hire an immigration lawyer to help them complete the paperwork. According to Jennie Murray, manager of the Bethlehem Project, some employers go further and front the government's $680 naturalization application fee and deduct the funds from pay checks.

Jamaicans begin quest for World Champs glory

Jamaican international and one of his country's team officials have been suspended for 30 days by FIFA after they failed drugs tests following a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Honduras on June 11. The Jamaican Football federation announced last month that an unidentified player tested positive for a banned substance, with FIFA saying the player declined to have his backup sample analysed. FIFA has now imposed a temporary ban but won't identify the player or official until the case is proven. Both have until August 12 to request a full disciplinary hearing and a further week to submit supporting documentary evidence. Jamaica lost 2-0 in Honduras and is bottom of its CONCACAF group that is led by the United States. The top three qualify directly to play in Brazil. With four games left to play in qualifying the Jamaicans have appointed a new head coach, German Winfried Schafer. The suspensions come just days after FIFA chief medical officer Prof. Ji Dvok announced that there was "no systematic doping culture in football". "We do more than 30,000 sampling procedures every year and we have between 70 to 90 positive cases, most of them for marijuana and cocaine and we have also anabolic steroids, but these are individual cases," he said. The Jamaica case nevertheless focuses more bad publicity on the Caribbean nation in the wake of a major doping scandal involving Jamaican athletes ahead of the upcoming world track and field championships in Moscow.

the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on Saturday (August 10). After months of preparation following the fireworks at the London Olympic Games about 12 months ago, expectations will be high for the Jamaicans with global sprinting superstar Usain Bolt leading the charge from the first day when he runs in the first round of the men's 100m. Michael Clarke, head coach of the 44member Jamaican delegation, told Jamaican reporters yesterday after training that the team was "ready" to start the medal hunt. Despite two days of rain that affected the training sessions, the sun was out yesterday and was welcomed by the coaches and the athletes who went through a full session. Clarke said the Jamaicans knew what to expect from the competition but were all set to try and better the nine medals -- four golds, four silver and a bronze -- won in Daegu, South Korea, two years ago. "The vibes are good, the camaraderie is good and we are expecting a good champi-

onships," Clarke said. Eight Jamaicans will be in action on the first day. They are Bolt, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Nickel Ashmeade and Nesta Carter who came in for the injured defending champion Yohan Blake in the men's 100m; StephenieAnn McPherson, Novlene Williams Mills

and Patricia Hall in the first round of the women's 400m, and also long jumper Francine Simpson who will compete in the preliminaries. Unlike last year, however, when the Jamaicans went into the English capital riding a wave, there will be some dark clouds surrounding the camp after six athletes, including three premier sprinters, retuned positive tests for banned substances earlier this year. Veronica Campbell Brown will give up her 200m title without a fight after she was suspended after testing positive for a stimulant at the Jamaica International Invitational in May, while former World Record holder Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson, the latter who was second in the 100m and 200m at the JAAA National Trials in June, will also be absent after also testing positive for a stimulant. The rash of tests have seen several pundits raise doubts about the credibility of the drug testing in Jamaica, but Bolt and ShellyAnn Fraser-Pryce who will both be chasing sprint double titles, have been quoted as saying they hoped their performances here will help to redeem the good name of Jamaica's track and field product.

amaica is a constitutional monarchy and is a member of the Commonwealth. Therefore, the Queen of England, Elizabeth II is the titular head of the country. She is represented here by a Governor-General. The Jamaican Parliament is bicameral. This means that it consists of two Houses, the Senate, also called the Upper House, and the House of Representatives, also known as the Lower House. The members of the House of Representatives are elected under universal adult suffrage, with a maximum of five years between elections. There are 60 constituencies, each represented by one Member of Parliament. There are 21 members of the Senate who are appointed by the GovernorGeneral; thirteen are appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister; and eight on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition. The Senate functions mainly as a review chamber for legislation passed by the House of Representatives. The Cabinet is the main instrument of government policy. Messeages for Jamaican Leaders

Patrick Allen Governor General raises for Jamaica's achievements in sports, education, and the creative fields, tempered by the reality that much more needs to be done, summarize the theme of this year's Independence messages from Jamaican leaders. The Governor-General, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have used their messages to encourage Jamaicans to better themselves, and by extension make the country better. All Jamaicans have a responsibility to help restore countrys image - GovernorGeneral Governor-General, Patrick Allen, has argued that Jamaicans still have the capacity to pursue the mission of making the country a place where persons choose to live, work, raise families and do business. He reasoned that all Jamaicans have the responsibility to help restore the country's image and defend

Portia Simpson Miller Prime Minister what is good. However, Sir Patrick argued that we are far away from where we want to be, but this can be fixed. He added that the large majority of Jamaicans are decent, hard-working, lawabiding citizens and have the capacity to transform Jamaica. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller wants Jamaicans to use their rich heritage to overcome the current hardships. She argued that Jamaicans, despite economic challenges, valiantly press on, defy the odds, and continue to work hard and reap successes that astonish the world. Mrs. Simpson Miller is encouraging Jamaicans to call on the strength of the nation's heroes to do more. She added that we must treasure our independence by working together to build a strong economic foundation and a prosperous nation.

Andrew Holness Opposition Leader Leader of the Opposition, Andrew Holness, while acknowledging the country's achievements, has recommended critical changes to the economic model in order to reap long term benefits. He encouraged Jamaicans not to totally rely on the IMF agreement, as it is not the cure-all for the country's economic problems. Mr. Holness argued that the country will not have success in its economic programmes unless it can show the political will to implement meaningful structural changes. One such change must be tax reform which will see lower tax burden for all, a wider tax net and greater tax revenue. Let us renew our commitment to improving the productivity and efficiency of our economy by ensuring that all our labour force is trained and certified and that businesses are able to retool and incorporate the latest technology in their production, said Mr. Holness.

1. All behaviour (the good, the bad and the ugly) is trying to tell you something. Your child may be tired, frustrated, hungry or seeking attention they just cant express it appropriately. 2. Your child may not know what is expected of them in a given situation. Make your expectations explicit. What does be good at the shops actually mean? What does it look like? And the next time you go to the shops you will have to go through it again. And quite possibly the time after that! 3. Provide plenty of positive feedback, confident in the knowledge that you are not spoiling them. 4. Children with special needs may not have experienced success in the way other children have. And it is not forever, it is for now. 5. It doesnt have to be an elaborate gesture. A smile, a wink, a quick hug, a thumbs up or a high five may be acknowledgment enough. 6. Rather than try to eliminate inappropriate behaviours, it is much more effective to try to replace negative behaviours with something else. 7. Focus on the positive and find something encouraging to say even in a bad situation e.g. after a tantrum say That wasnt the right way to react but I liked the way you said sorry to me.

National Educational Venture Alliance chairman and founder Dr. Neva Helena Alexander said the research community will be convening at this conference to provide the knowledge needed to move our society towards positive changes while impacting our youth. Apart from academia the conference aims at attracting a variety of business organizations with an interest obtaining new information, developing results driven solutions to youth matters, and contributing scholarly papers regarding youth, employment and globalization, hence providing a space to blend theory and practice as well as to identify best practices.

ake a close look at your fingernails. Are they strong and healthy looking? Or do you see ridges, dents, or areas of unusual color or shape? Many less than desirable nail conditions can be avoided through proper fingernail care. Others indicate an underlying condition that requires attention. Healthy fingernails are smooth, without pits or grooves. They're uniform in color and consistency and free of spots or discoloration. Sometimes fingernails develop harmless vertical ridges that run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Vertical ridges tend to become more prominent with age. Fingernails can also develop white lines or spots due to injury, but these eventually grow out with the nail. Not all nail conditions are normal, however. Consult your doctor or dermatologist if you notice: Changes in nail color, such as discoloration of the entire nail or a dark streak under the nails

Bleeding around the nails Redness, swelling or pain around the nails Weak or Brittle fingernails Weak fingernails can be a challenge to toughen up. To protect weak or brittle fingernails and reduce the risk of splitting or breaking: Keep your nails short. Long nails are more likely to split or break. Use moisturizer. Apply moisturizer to your fingernails and cuticles several times throughout the day and before bed. Consider wearing cotton gloves while you sleep, to help seal in the moisture. Apply nail polish. A thin coat of clear nail polish can help keep moisture in your fingernails. Limit use of nail polish remover. Don't use nail polish remover more than once a week. When you do need to use nail polish remover, choose the acetone-free variety. Acetone dries nails. Ask your doctor about biotin supplements. Changing your diet or taking daily multivitamins isn't likely to strengthen your nails. However, some research suggests that the nutritional supplement biotin might help strengthen weak or brittle fingernails.

Love Connection

editor@streethype.net

he emotionally distant spouse can be a source of significant unhappiness, stress and conflict in marriages and families. Most often, we hear wives make this complaint about their husbands' behaviors. The pain of loneliness, insecurity, mistrust and anger caused by the emotionally distant spouse can intensify over the years of marriage and can lead to a desire to separate or even divorce. Unfortunately, in many marriages there is a failure to honestly discuss and address this weakness in self-giving. The good news is that this serious marital conflict can be uncovering and resolved through the hard work of growing in virtues. This healing process can lead to a strengthening of the romantic aspect of the marriage, marital friendship and betrothed love but primarily is the challenging movement of the heart and mind. The most common causes of emotionally distant marital behaviors are the result of men modeling after fathers who had this conflict and serious damage to the ability to trust caused by the trauma of their parents divorce or by a parent's controlling or angry behaviors. Although some spouses gave freely of themselves during the early years of

Bridging Emotional Distance

their marriage, under the influence of numerous types of stress, the emotional wounds of mistrust from childhood and adolescence emerge. These can lead them to pull away or criticize in an unconscious attempt to protect themselves from further betrayal. Other important factors which can lead a spouse to withdraw love and selfgiving are various hurts over the years of the marriage, giving into the epidemic of selfishness in the culture and the use of oral contraceptives. The essence of a healthy marital friendship is the ability to give oneself to one's spouse with deeds, emotions and thoughts. An important aspect of martial self-giving is communication to a spouse which is essential to maintaining and strengthening the marital friendship. -Source: twoofus.org

Dear Divine Diva: our response to "Not Ungrateful in Brooklyn (December 20) missed the mark. Her boyfriend of eleven months is flying first class to Jamaica, but he's only paying for a coach ticket for her? I was a divorce lawyer for 31 years (now retired), so I know a few things about relationships. While Enton had no obligation to pay her way to Jamaica, once he invited her, he displayed a troubling character flaw. If he was going to pay her way, he should have paid for her to sit with him in first class. Her seat in coach is a warning sign: She'll always be in the back of the plane, the bus or his life. Of course buying a first class seat for the two of them is expensive, but if he's going to take her to his family's chateau, he should treat her as an equal -or not do it at all. Representing Brooklyn.

A Few Things on Relationships

I

Dear Representing Brooklyn: appreciate your viewpoint, one which is shared by many other readers. The responses to that letter were an interesting mix. My newspaper readers comment:

Dear Divine Diva: ot Ungrateful" is unbelievable! My husband cannot sit in coach unless he is at an exit row, and those seats aren't always easy to get. Because I'm short, I don't need the extra space and, if I am assigned an exit seat, I gladly give it up to a tall person. That woman will be in Jamaica (paid for!) by her boyfriend. I would go in the baggage compartment for such an opportunity. -Happy To Trade Places

Dear Happy To Trade Places: less-expensive option for longlegged fliers is to buy an extra coach seat , HOWEVER Im only flying the same class as my man if we are traveling together. -Always Divine Diva

ARIES (Mar. 21 Apr. 19): Don't waste time worrying about anyone else's judgments. Just be as clear as possible about your boundaries when you tell your friends that you would rather stay home, catch up on your rest and recharge your batteries. Nurturing yourself first will enable you to feel more generous to others later on. TAURUS (Apr. 20May 20): It's difficult to make enough time for yourself because you're probably busier than you prefer now, and you cannot change your schedule until you meet your obligations. Do the best to deliver what you promise, but don't be a casualty of your own blind optimism. GEMINI (May 21Jun. 20): It's too soon to breathe a sigh of relief because there are still rough waters to navigate. Reshuffle your priorities to match your heart's wishes, and clearly communicate your needs to those around you now. If you don't at first succeed, make a few adjustments and try again. CANCER (Jun. 21 Jul. 22): It's impossible to hide within your shell once you have already been seen. Come clean and share your truth with someone you trust. Thankfully, those who respect you won't be surprised by your story, even if you're a bit embarrassed. LEO (Jul. 23 Aug. 22): Your good intentions can go a long way toward healing a rift. But don't be hard on yourself if you can't live up to your own grandiose expectations. You are a human, not a god. VIRGO (Aug. 23 Sept. 22): Your sharp thinking is now the source of recognition at work. Nevertheless, everyone wants to be on your side, even if you don't know which side you're actually on. Instead of depending on your analytical powers to set a course of action, just go with what's in your gut. LIBRA (Sept. 23 Oct.22): Maintaining your objectivity can be challenging while other people pull on your heartstrings and push your emotional buttons. Ironically, you think it's wise to avoid intimate interactions that could reveal your emotional

HOROSCOPE

vulnerability now. However, your feelings are not ruled by reason, so allow yourself to experience the pleasure and pain of irrational passion. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 Nov. 21): Your view of the future is quite different from what you expected because everything is so much clearer. Nevertheless, this can be tricky territory to navigate, since it's not ultimately about anything tangible in your external world. You are the sole creator of your fantasies, and it's still up to you to figure out how to make them come true. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 Dec.21): You might choose to escape by engaging in competitive sports, participating in exciting outdoor activities or simply heading out on an adventure to parts unknown. You have a different kind of excitement waiting for you now if you choose to share your feelings with someone special. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 Jan. 19): A number of little irritating events might happen at work but thankfully, none of them is likely to be significant. It's like having mosquitos follow you around so you can't lower your defenses all the way. You must pay attention to the annoying hums or you'll have to deal with the larger irritation of itchy bites. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 Feb. 18): It's challenging to feel at ease because it seems as if someone with a big ego is blocking your desire to just be your authentic self. Your current wariness has nothing to do with paranoia; you simply prefer to avoid the unnecessary disappointment that you might experience if you lower your protective walls too fast. PISCES (Feb. 19 Mar. 20): You're a bit on edge but whatever discomfort you are experiencing isn't enough to push you into making a lifechanging decision. You might get into an emotional tussle with a friend or lover who is overly critical of you. Or a memory of an old wound could provoke you to start an unnecessary conflict with someone else.

GRACE JAMAICAN JERK FESTIVAL NEW YORK SERVED IT UP:

(l-r) Movie Star Leon, Chef Brian Lumley, New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and his wife at the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival New York at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens. The culturally rich and gastronomically delightful 3rd Annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival brought out a diverse group of some 15,000 patrons - from grandmas and grandpas to babies and everyone in between - for a cultural and culinary feast that left them thoroughly satisfied.

lood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of our arteries. Blood pressure rises and falls throughout the day. When the pressure stays elevated over time, it is considered high blood pressure. The medical term for high blood pressure is hypertension. High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder than it should and contributes to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). If hypertension remains untreated, it may lead to more serious health problems. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, the first and third-leading causes of death among Americans. High blood pressure also can result in other conditions, such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and blindness.

News Americas: aribbean nationals may know how to party but major depression is a serious public health problem among older Caribbean adults according to a new study. New research by a Michigan State University scholar of nearly 2,000 people aged 50 and older, found that whites and blacks of Caribbean descent experience much higher rates of major depression than African-Americans. Amanda Toler Woodward, lead investigator on the study and MSU associate professor of social work, said the findings, taken as a whole, suggest major depression among older Caribbean people is worse than many believe and has serious implications as the massive baby boomer generation ages. The study examined rates of major depression among three ethnic groups whites, African-Americans and black Caribbeans making it the first comprehen-

sive examination of major depression among older blacks. Specifically, the researchers found: About 23 percent of older black Caribbean immigrants experienced major depression during their lifetime, and 15 percent experienced major depressive symptoms in the previous 12 months. Older black men of Caribbean descent reported much higher rates of major depression than older black women of Caribbean descent. This runs counter to the other ethnic groupswhites and AfricanAmericanswhich saw women report higher rates of major depression. While the study did not measure why black Caribbean nationals had significantly higher rates of major depression than African-Americans, Woodward said it may have to do with negative experiences related to immigration such as being separated from family and friends and adapting to U.S. culture.

Risk Factors for Heart Disease Risk factors are conditions or behaviors that increase your likelihood of developing a disease. When you have more than one for heart disease, your risk greatly multiplies. So if you have high blood pressure, you need to take action. Fortunately, most of the heart disease risk factors are largely within your control. High blood pressure affects about 50 million---or one in four--- American adults. Some people are more likely to develop it than others. It is especially common among African Americans, who tend to develop it earlier and more often than whites. Also, many Americans tend to develop high blood pressure as they get older, but hypertension is not a part of healthy aging. About 60 percent of all Americans age 60 and older have high blood pressure.

Nutrition Management Eat a well-balanced diet: eat a diet containing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, poultry and fish. Eat a diet low in fat and sodium: eating high fat foods can cause you to gain weight. Foods high in sodium cause your body to retain water. This increases the amount of blood circulating in your arteries and may result in a rise in blood pressure. Lose weight, if overweight: Getting rid of excess weight may help reduce blood pressure levels. Exercise regularly: exercising on a regular basis helps your heart and blood vessels function better. Physical activity may also help you lose weight. Avoid muscle-building activities such as weight lifting because they may increase your blood pressure.

Growing Your Business T

here are many ways to do this, 10 of which are outlined below. Choosing the proper one (or ones) for your business will depend on the type of business you own, your available resources, and how much money, time and resources you're willing to invest all over again. If you're ready to grow, take a look at these tips. Open another location. This is often the first way business owners approach growth. If you feel confident that your current business location is under control, consider expanding by opening a new location. Offer your business as a franchise or business opportunity. Franchising your business will allow for growth without requiring you to manage the new location. This will help to maximize the time you spend improving your business in other ways, too. License your product. This can be an effective, low-cost growth medium, particularly if you have a service product or branded product. Licensing also minimizes your risk and is low cost in comparison to the price of starting your own company to produce and sell your brand or product. To find a licensing partner, start by researching companies that provide products or services similar to yours. Form an alliance. Aligning yourself with a similar type of business can be a powerful way to expand quickly. Diversify. Diversifying is an excellent strategy for growth, because it allows you to have multiple streams of income that can often fill seasonal voids and, of course, increase sales and profit margins. Here are a few of the most common ways to diversify: Sell complementary products or services; Teach adult education or other types of classes; Import or export yours or others' products; Become a paid speaker or columnist Target other markets. Your current market is serving you well. Are there others? Probably. Use your imagination to determine what other markets could use your product. Win a government contract. One of the best ways to grow your business is to win business from the government. Work with your local SBA and Small Business Development Center to help you determine the types of contracts available to you. Merge with or acquire another business. Two is always bigger than one. Investigate companies that are similar to yours, or that have offerings that are complementary to yours, and consider the benefits of combining forces or acquiring the company. Expand globally. To do this, you'll need a foreign distributor who can carry your product and resell it in their domestic markets. You can locate foreign distributors by scouring your city or state for a foreign company with a U.S. representative.

usic classrooms around the country could soon become more cultured, with the help of a recently released publication about Jamaican Dancehall. Jamaican Dancehall: Misconceptions and Pedagogical Advantages, is a new book by musician and educator, Owen Joseph. It looks at the use of Jamaican Dancehall as a teaching resource, and tackles common misconceptions held by the general population. Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music, which dates back to the late 1970s. More recently, Dancehall has had resurgence in mainstream pop music with artists like Sean Paul, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna all incorporating it in their chart topping songs. The hope is primarily for music teachers to read this book, but also any one interested in learning about Jamaican culture through the eyes of Dancehall music. Said Joseph, who has been working in the education sector for nearly a decade. His work as a music educator and many years of studying music was his main inspiration for writing the book. It took about six months to write Jamaican Dancehall: Misconceptions and Pedagogical Advantages, which was originally Josephs graduate thesis when he
