I agree that the Opium war only affected Chinas economy to a very small extent.

The Opium war did affected Chinas politic and social as well. Opium war did affected Chinas economy. Source B says that foreign trade flourished in China. Though it sounds like China had benefited from this but the fact is that the source did not even state that the Chinese benefitted from it. Moreover, this is found in British history magazine and hence they might not say the situation in full. Source C says that after the first opium war against British, many soldiers found themselves without job when the armies were disbanded. With increasing employment... This also proved that the Chinese did not gain anything even though Chinese goods had increased after the five ports open, which is after Opium war. Worst still, many of them have no jobs and were unable to support themselves as well as their family. Hence, more people losing their jobs and being poor in the society lead to economic downfall in China. Base on my contextual knowledge, Chinese living and working under the foreigner at the 5 ports suffered discrimination under the hands of foreigners. The Chinese were made to pay a higher tax for the reparation of Opium war which caused them to suffer economic hardship and high cost of products entering China. The Chinese had become poorer as the tax and product increase in value and caused the economic crisis.

Opium war affected Chinas politics as well. In source A, there is 5 people surrounding a pie written as CHINESE and these 5 people starting from the right side of the picture were representing England, Germany, Russia, France and Japanese. Each of them was holding a knife, discussing and looking at the pie which is represent China with Germany cutting his share. There was a man standing behind the 5 of them with his hands up and looking very angry. He was wearing a Chinese official uniform so he was representing China. This picture was illustrated by an artists impression of chinas fate after opium war. All these show that these 5 countries were conquering and influencing some part of China. China could not do anything to stop the foreigners from conquering China. He was angry, however, that did not stop the foreigners. Hence, the author is trying to point up how weak China had become that it had and will lose territories to the foreigners. The foreigners had more power over China than the Chinese government themselves and thus, the foreign had taken control over some part of China. Base on the contextual knowledge, many powerful European countries had their control over China. Two examples will be that Qingdao belongs to Germany and Hong Kong belongs to British. These

foreigners had the power over some provinces is because China had lost to them in the wars and she is forced to sign unfair treaty where one of the condition is to give up territory to them. This forcing China to sign unfair treaty started because of the Opium war China had with England and was force to sign the treaty of Nanking. Gradually, other foreigner saw how easy it was to extort concession from a weak China. Therefore, opium war had affected Chinas politics. Also, Opium war affected Chinas sociality. Source C says that with increasing unemployment many turned to banditry and developed links with local secret societies for protection. And peasants and unemployed soldiers took part in what was to go down in history as one of the most destructive uprising the world has ever known-Taiping Rebellion. This shows that after opium war, many unemployed Chinese were so poor and desperate that they have to resort to banditry and this led to social unrest. The society of the Chinese will be chaotic and they would have to lead a life full of worries, fear and hunger. Many Chinese also joined the local secret society for protection and with the increasing support from the Chinese to the secret society, cause a taiping Rebellion. Taiping Rebellion had been destructive uprising the world ever known and this explained how bad the situation is. Base on my contextual knowledge, serious economic problem brought on by Opium war has pushed many unemployed man to turn to banditry and joining secret society. Taiping Rebellion is caused by the secret society called Ten Heavenly Commandment and this lasted for 13 years and had cost 30 million lives. The rebellion had many Chinese suffering as this had further worsened China economic problem. Hence, the rebellion caused social conflict and disorder and thus, opium war had cause social problem as well. Overall, Opium war not only affected Chinas economic, it also affect its sociality and politics.
