El soberano de un importante reino envejeca. Resolvi que haba llegado el momento de nombrar a uno de sus cuatro hijos heredero al trono, y los llam de uno en uno para ver quin lo sucedera. El primer hijo entr a la sala del trono y tom asiento. El rey le dijo: Mira, hijo, estoy muy entrado en aos y no me queda mucho de vida. Quiero encomendar mi reino al que est ms capacitado para gobernar de mis hijos. Cuntame; si te dejo mi reino, qu le aportars? The king of a large kingdom was growing old. He decided that it was time to select an heir from among his four sons, so he called them in one at a time to discuss the inheritance of his kingdom. The first son entered the chamber of the king and sat down, and the king said, My son, I am very old and will not live much longer. I wish to entrust my kingdom to the son best suited to receive it. Tell me, if I leave my kingdom to you, what will you give to the kingdom? Now this son was very rich, so when asked the question, he replied: I am a man of vast wealth. If you leave me your kingdom I will give it all of my wealth and it will be the richest kingdom in all the world. Thank you, son, the king said as he dismissed the son.

Seguidamente entr el segundo hijo. El rey le dijo: Mira, hijo, soy muy anciano. No me queda mucho de vida. Quiero encomendar mi reino al ms capacitado de mis hijos. Si te lo dejo a ti, qu le dars? Este hijo estaba dotado de gran inteligencia, por lo que respondi: Poseo gran inteligencia. Si me dejas el reino, la volcar toda sobre l y ser el ms sagazmente gobernado. Gracias, hijo, repuso el rey, y le pidi que se retirara.

Ms tarde, entr el tercer hijo y el rey le dijo: Tengo ya muchos aos. Me queda poco tiempo de vida, y quisiera dejar el reino en manos del ms capacitado de mis hijos. Si te lo dejo a ti, qu hars? Este hijo posea una gran fuerza, y contest: Tengo mucha fuerza. Si heredo el reino, le dedicar toda mi fuerza y ser el ms poderoso de los reinos. Gracias, hijo, repuso el monarca, y se despidi.

Entr entonces el cuarto, y el rey lo salud y le explic lo mismo que a los otros tres. Ahora bien, el cuarto hijo no era muy rico, inteligente ni fuerte, as que contest: Padre, yo s que mis hermanos son mucho ms pudientes, sabios y fuertes que yo. Mientras ellos dedicaron aos a cultivar esos talentos, yo dediqu el tiempo a mezclarme con la gente del reino. He convivido con el pueblo en todo momento, acompandolo en los momentos de enfermedad y de tristeza, y he llegado a amar mucho a tus sbditos. Todo lo que puedo ofrecerles es amor. Cuando falleci el rey, el pueblo aguard ansioso para saber quin sera el nuevo soberano. Grande fue la dicha de todos por la noticia de que el nuevo rey sera el cuarto hijo.

The fourth son entered and was greeted by the king in the same fashion as the other three. Now this son wasnt especially rich, or smart, or strong, so he replied, My father, you know that my brothers are much richer, smarter, and stronger than I. While they have spent years gaining these attributes, I have spent my time among the people in your kingdom. I have shared with them in their sickness and sorrow, and I have learned to love them. The only thing I have to give to the people of your kingdom is my love. When the king died, the people anxiously awaited the news as to their new ruler. And the greatest rejoicing the kingdom ever knew took place when they heard that their new king was the fourth son.
