Online Course Economic and Financial Journalism 2011 Final Report


This is to confirm that Mr. Leonard Makombe has successfully completed a 6-month training course Economic and Financial Reporting run by the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Berlin, Germany. The course ran over 24 weeks (six months) and was divided into two modules of 12 weeks each with a one-month break in-between. The first module ran from 09 May to 29 July 2011; the second from 26 August to 25 November 2011. Participants were required to complete both modules and received a certificate if they successfully completed the course. The course had 24 lectures - one a week - covering everything from economic/ financial reporting and writing skills, through corporate and market reporting, to national and global economic issues, as well as 24 assignments - one a week - in which participants were required to submit work for marking by the lecturers via e-mail. Participants were also asked to analyse and improve real stories selected from newspaper websites, to follow breaking news and show that they understand the issues. Participants participated in weekly chat sessions and presented/ discussed critiques of current news stories on topical issues. Overall evaluation of Mr. Leonard Makombe Overall contribution to the course, both in terms of quality and frequency, through assignments, chats, postings Excellent. An experienced journalist, Leonard impressed with the intellectual enquiry he brought to the discussions. His contributions were always thoughtful and thought provoking. He is a skilled journalist and if he took up journalism teaching he would be a wonderful professor. 24 out of 24 Probing intellectual approach always gave extra value to assignments. He absorbed the course material in no time. Authoritative job on banks and debt crisis showed full understand of banking world. Leonard always came prepared, even under time pressure. He often challenged the group to look at things in a fresh light. Unfailingly alert and enquiring, Leonard has a breadth of knowledge in economics. Excellent. He stood out for his experience and its hard to imagine anyone more committed to good journalism.
