Project Work for Additional Mathematics

Part 1

A polygon is a 2-dimensional shape which can be seen all round us, such as in architectures and even popular devices like electronic tablets and smartphones these days. Besides, the beauty and variation offered by polygons, polygons are also practical shapes which can be utilized for example, in a stability of a building. Squares, triangles and rectangles are examples of polygons that we usually see around us like in the picture above. a) Collect 6 pictures with different polygons. The pictures can be obtained from magazines, books, self-sourced photos, or from the internet. Mark the main polygon in each picture and label the picture accordingly based on the type of polygon (Hint: Ending with -gon)

b) Provide the definition for polygon and write out a short history on polygons.

c) Multiple methods exist for the calculation of a simple triangle. Provide four different methods that can be used to calculate the area of a triangle. It is possible to illustrate the method clearer by drawing out and labeling the triangle used. (eg. Side A, angle, length, etc)

Part 2 A farmer wishes to open up a small scale herb plantation on a plot of land that he owns. The figure below (Figure 1) shows the shape of the planned plantation, where one of the sides is 100 m and 2 sides at 5 m. The whole plantation will be fence using a total length of 300 m. The cost of fencing the area is RM 25 for a single meter.

Figure 1

a) Calculate the cost that is needed to fence up the plantation.

b) Complete the table below using suitable values for p, q and .

p(m)

q(m)

(degree)

Area (m2)

c) Based on your findings in (b), state the dimension of the plantation to maximize the area of the fenced plantation.

d)

a. There is a limited range of p and q values which can be utilized in this case study. State the range of values that is valid for p and q. b. Based on the length of p, q and the 100 m side, determine the relationship between the three sides. c. Make a generalization on the sides of a triangle based on their length. State the name of the theorem and provide a brief description on what the theorem is all about.

Part 3 If the length of the fences is still assumed to be 300 m, but this time, none of the length is fixed, a) Do your own research and suggest 5 different shapes which can be built to maximize the fenced area. Draw the shapes out and show your calculation to compare the different areas obtained from different shapes.

b) Create a conclusion from your study in (a) if ,

a. The demand for herbs is increasing in the local market. Suggest the names of three herbs which can be planted to together with the scientific names that can be planted by the farmer to meet the

markets demand. Write out the details of the plants and also provide pictures to illustrate the chosen herbs.

b. From the three herbs, choose one of it, and based on the use of the herbs, think of a suitable product that the farmer can sell it as. Since packaging is an important part of any marketing strategy, design a proper logo to promote the product. The logo can be sketched or digitally drawn on an A4-size paper and the logo must contain at least a single polygon.

Example: Chosen herb: Product name: Description of product: Logo:

Reflection Throughout the project work, what are the most important lessons that you have learnt? If there are problems encountered, how did you manage to solve them? Illustrate some examples which you think the knowledge would be helpful in your daily life or future.
