Government proposes to build 17 new airports in 11 states READ MORE ON West Bengal | Madhya Pradesh | Itanagar | Arunachal Pradesh | Ajit Singh NEW DELHI: The government has proposed to build 17 new airports in 11 states, an expansion plan that will partly address the Indian aviation sector's growing capacity challenges and improve air connectivity in under-penetrated states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. Minister of State for Civil Aviation KC Venugopal informed Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the airports have been proposed for construction during the 12th Five Year Plan. Karnataka is the biggest beneficiary of the government proposal with as many as four airports to come up in Gulbarga, Bijapur, Hassan and Shimoga. Goa will get a second airport in Mopa and Kerala a fourth in Aranmula. Airports for Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand will be built in Itanagar, Kishangarh and Deoghar. The expansion, though significant, pales in comparison with China's. The head of that country's aviation watchdog said last year that as many as 70 new airports will be built by 2015. Aviation consultancy Capa said India is under-prepared for major airport capacity challenge and requires investments worth $40 billion in 50 greenfield airports by 2025. Passenger traffic will grow to 452 million by 2020-21 from 143 million in 2010-11 and scheduled airlines' fleet will expand to 1,030 aircraft from 430 in the same period, it said Share Share 8 Share More News Indiatimes | The Times of India | The Economic Times | More Search for News, Stock Quotes & NAV's Government proposes to build 17 new airports in 11 states - The Economi... http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/transportatio... 1 of 4 11/08/2013 7:35 PM Raghuram Rajan in Focus Raghu will succeed in managing RBI because he has no axe to grind He is a scholar who can not only predict financial crises but also manage them. 'Chennai Express' to enter Rs 200 crore ... problem. High speed railways can make people reach destinations faster. Why waste 60-90 mins at the airport for every check-in, and another 30 mins to get the baggage? why not have trains fast enough (150-300 Kmph) that can make journeys more comfortable for masses at cheaper price, taking the same amount of door-to-door time? The Railways can also serve goods better and more economically. Airlines will consume immense amount of fuel for which crude has to be imported. Disagree (0) Recommend (1) Offensive Not sure about other states but why KERALA needs 4th airport when they already have Trivandrum, Kochi & Calicut? 3 airport is sufficient for small state like kerala . Agree (3) Disagree (1) Recommend (0) Offensive That's true, very big states like Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh , U.P. , should be developed instead ..! Agree (0) Disagree (0) Recommend (0) Offensive I think this is a wasteful expenditure. Commercial airports should be constructed based on economic viability and not just the whims and fancies of politicians. Most of the PSUs are not able to make good profits because of political site selections. Who will use these airports and how many private airlines will touch these except the AirIndia which will further be doomed by flying on uneconomical routes. better to invest on providing clean water, good roads/rails and electricity to people, farmers and factories. Agree (3) Disagree (1) Recommend (1) Offensive What happened to the sagar sarovar project? We were to build a massive garland canal covering all states and redirecting water from abundant states to scarce states. Isn't that a more pressing need? Water supply, long lasting concretised highways, cargo and metro railways for Metro, Tier 1 & Tier 2 cities and Fiber optic network layout across the country to ensure better connectivity. Agree (4) Disagree (0) Recommend (2) Offensive This is a wasteful exercise. Except for tourist circuits and remote places like Arunachal there is no need for expensive capital investments like an Airport. In stead govt should spend that money in building medical institutes. We have gross undesupply and medical expenses are out of reach for most of the people now. Agree (3) Disagree (1) Recommend (1) Offensive Building airports is good but imposing them on people is not good.
