Preparation

Action Download the file SIMATIC_HMI_Label_Creator.zip". Unzip the zip-archive into a local directory.

Note Please find the download link in the chapter Literature.

Commissioning

Action Start the file SIMATIC HMI Label Creator.exe

Note You can start the program without any installation.

Note

In order to start the SIMATIC HMI Creator, .NET-Framework version 3.5 or higher has to be installed on the computer. (It is already on the computer, if the TIA portal has been installed).

Procedure

Create a new project


Table 2-1 No. 1. 2. 3. 4. Steps Click on Create a new Project. Enter the project name in the box Project Name. Enter the project path in the box Path or select it from the dialog. Optional: Enter an author in the box Author and a comment in the box Comment. Click on Create to create the project. The project is created automatically and then opened. The project name must not contain any special characters. Note

Open an existing project


Open a project from the list Recent Project by double-clicking on the respective line in the Recent Projects list. Alternatively, you can select one line of the list and click on the button open.

Find a project on the hard disk and open it

In the selection dialog, navigate to the project file on the hard disk and select the file with the name Projectname.xml. Confirm by opening the file. If the project has already been entered in the Recent Projects list, the following message will appear on the screen. Note

If, during the removal, the project folder cannot be found any more, you can remove the project from the Recent Projects list. Please also confirm with the "Yes" button. Note

Once a project has been removed, it cannot be restored.

Enter a name for the device you want to create in the Name box. Click on OK to confirm the operating device.

The name must not contain any special characters.

Table 2-5 No. 1. 2. 3. Steps Select a device from the list of all devices that have been created. Click on Remove to remove the device. If you really want to remove the device, please click on the Yes button.

Once a device has been removed, it cannot be restored.

Configuration of the label strip


Open the configuration window for an operating device by a double-click on the line of the respective operating device Alternatively, you can select one line of the list and click on the button Edit.

Table 2-6 No. 1. Steps Click on the operating key of the panel for which you wish to configure the graphics. Navigate to the image file you want to use by means of the selection dialog and confirm your selection by pressing Open By default, the filter of the selection dialog only activates files with the suffix .png. You can also set the filter in the selection dialog to .gif or .jpg. Please note that these formats do not support transparency. This is relevant if you wish to print the label strips on a transparent film. If the graphics for an operating key have been configured, a button with a red X next to the operating key will appear. Click on the button to remove the configured graphics. Note

The graphics preview is displayed directly on the respective operating key of the operating device.

In the boxes Title and Additional text, you can enter any text and mark the label strips additionally.

Export the label strips


Table 2-7 No. 1. Steps Confirm the button Export to export the configured label strips while the configuration window is open. Select a storage path and a name for the file in the dialog. Confirm by clicking on Save. By default, the project path has been configured for storage. Remark

Note

Please make sure to export the label strip as a .png file if you wish to print the label strip on a film. Otherwise, the transparent effect of the file will get lost, and a background might be printed on the film. By default, the dialog is set in such a way that the label strips are saved as .png files.

Steps Open the file you have exported by means of Window Photo Viewer or Windows Image and Fax Viewer

Press the Print button to start the assistant for printing pictures.

4 General Notes

General Notes
Table 4-1 No. 1. 2. 3. Note For creating label strips, please use transparent films or paper with a thickness min. 0.13 mm, max. 0.16 mm. If required, punch the holes for LEDs from the paper strip after printing so that the LEDs remain visible in the function keys. Protect the marking against abrasion by means of a transparent adhesive tape (please observe max. thickness) or a special fixating spray (available in specialized IT stores).

Notes about printing the label strips (printing material)

The label strips should not be too loose, since they could leave their correct position due to vibrations. Sometimes it will be necessary to secure the label strip in place with an adhesive tape.
It is easier to insert the label strips if the edges have been rounded a bit.
