After further discussion with
representatives from Haddon-
field United Methodist Church,
the Haddonfield Board of Educa-
tion has decided to hold off on re-
locating the districts preschool
program, agreeing on another al-
ternative.
Under the alternative, two of
three classes would be moved
from Tatem Elementary School
to Elizabeth Haddon Elementary
and Central Elementary.
We feel we are maintaining
the strength of our preschool
program and creating a neigh-
borhood school dynamic, said
superintendent Rich Perry,
adding all preschool parents
were notified of the change.
According to Perry, the board
feverishly sought an alternative
to the overcrowding issues at
Tatem, hoping to find a proper
substitute for housing the pre-
school program.

Its been nearly two months
since 24-year-old Haddonfield res-
ident Jeannie OPella was diag-
nosed with breast cancer. With
her first round of chemotherapy
almost complete, OPellas reac-
tion to her diagnosis from the
first day was we got this.
We dont hear about people
my age getting breast cancer, she
said.
The backstory of her diagnosis
was a blessing in disguise.
It was a normal day for OPella
until she went on to her back deck
and slipped while wearing flip-
flops, landing on her back.
She experienced back pain be-
fore her fall, but didnt think any-
thing of it.
OPella went to the doctor for
what she thought was a routine
examination and discovered she
broke two vertebrae and had a
tumor on her spine the cause of
her initial back pain. After a biop-
sy was performed, a tumor was
also found in her breast, she said.
OPella went from having sur-
gery replacing two vertebrae in
her back to finding out she had
stage four breast cancer.
It was a crazy circumstance. I
dont know where I would be
right now, if it werent for the
tumble on the deck, she said.

Bancroft recognized
for quality service
and commitment
Bancroft, a Haddonfield-based
nonprofit and leading provider of
specialized services for individu-
als with autism, brain injuries
and other disabilities, has been
recognized for its quality service
and commitment to serving com-
munity.
After a survey of Bancroft pro-
grams in southern and central
New Jersey, the Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities announced a three-year
accreditation for Bancrofts Brain
Injury Services programs.
The CARF accreditation
process applies sets of standards
to service areas and business
practices during an on-site survey.
Accreditation, however, is an on-
going process, signaling to the
public that a service provider is
committed to continuously im-
proving services, encouraging
feedback and serving the commu-
nity. Accreditation also demon-
strates a provider's commitment
to enhance its performance, man-
age its risk and distinguish its
service delivery.
We are very proud to receive
this recognition and the valida-
tion it provides for the work we do
every day at Bancroft, said Toni
Pergolin, Bancroft president and
CEO. In our industry there is no
higher recognition than to be ac-
credited by CARF, and it is a testa-
ment to the effort of our staff
members who serve those in our
programs as well as the broader
community.
commodate the needs of the stu-
dents currently enrolled in the
program to try to make the move
as easy as possible. The preschool
families and preschool staff have
been very understanding and
helpful throughout the process,
Tatem Elementary School Princi-
pal Karen Schultz said.
In June, the board agreed that
using the churchs upgraded fa-
cility would be beneficial for both
preschool students and students
at Tatem.
The cost to rent the space
would have been $5,000 per
month from September to June,
or $50,000 per year. It would not
have affected the cost of tuition.
The district would have used
five rooms on the third floor with
25 teachers and support staff on-
site, including one administra-
tive member.
The district also agreed it
would be responsible for the facil-
itys maintenance and upkeep,
using its own workers. One bus
would have been available for
transportation, Perry said at the
meeting in June.
While the board was waiting
on a response from church repre-
sentatives, it made a motion to
give Perry the power to make a
decision when the church re-
sponds to the proposal.
Given the deadline to find a so-
lution before the start of the
school year, Perry said the con-
cerns and demands brought up at
a recent meeting could not be met
in time.
Using the churchs facility is
still an option for the coming
years.
Given our enrollment projec-
tions and increased number of
students coming into the district,
we want to look at alternative
means, he said.
The district projects its enroll-
ment will increase 7 percent, or
2,677 students, in the next five
years.
The enrollment figures for the
2013-2014 school year at Tatem is
526 students; at Central Elemen-
tary School, 366 students; and at
Elizabeth Haddon, 332 students.
The districts total enrollment
is 2,558 with 72 students enrolled
in the preschool program and 11
more to come, Perry said.
He said overcrowding at Tatem
has caused issues with combin-
ing uses of classrooms, traffic is-
sues during drop-off and pickup,
and more.
Moving two of the classrooms
allows our school to get back our
computer lab, art room, music
room and counselors office,
Schultz said. This will positively
impact our elementary school
students.
Haddonfield Board of Educa-
tion is holding its next meeting
on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Cen-
tral-Middle School Library, on
Lincoln Avenue.

N
ew Jersey is a gambling state.
Always has been even before
Resorts International opened
its doors as the first legal casino in At-
lantic City in 1978.
Weve had gambling politicians,
gambling speak-easy owners and gam-
bling residents from the beginning.
We embrace the culture.
Atlantic City, to us, isnt some for-
bidden place where only degenerates
and low-lifes go to satiate a fix. Its a
place where adults, young and old, go
to stay and play.
Casinos are part of our upbringing.
Whether we frequent them or not,
theyre always in our minds. They
highlight the skyline of the coast and
hog a significant portion of our news.
So its no surprise that New Jersey
wants more.
This year, gaming in the state will
enter a new dimension when a ban on
internet gambling is lifted. 888 Hold-
ings, a London-based gaming compa-
ny, will provide its technology to Cae-
sars Interactive Entertainment and
will also launch operations under its
own brand later this year.
The company is doing the same in
Nevada and Delaware, two states,
which maybe not coincidentally
have the other thing that New Jersey
wants: Sports gambling.
Just last week, Congressmen Frank
LoBiondo and Frank Pallone hit the
campaign trail for sports gambling
in Atlantic City, professing the need
for two bills they re-introduced in Feb-
ruary.
Theres a federal ban on the practice
in states not named Nevada, Delaware,
Oregon and Montana, but these legis-
lators and others in the state are
hoping to overturn that law. The Third
Circuit Court of Appeals is currently
hearing an appeal regarding it.
Legal and gaming experts say they
feel fairly certain that, at some point,
the federal law will be overturned and
sports betting will be legal in New Jer-
sey. We cant wait for that day. Not be-
cause we want to place a sports bet
legally at a window in Atlantic City,
exactly, but because it will finally help
end the hypocrisy around the discus-
sion.
Millions, maybe even billions, of
dollars are being bet on sports in this
country every year, most of it illegally.
Why its OK to do so in Nevada, or as
close as Delaware, and not New Jersey,
is beyond our comprehension.
If we can have casinos that are high-
ly regulated by an independent agency,
why cant we also have betting on
sports? Its a practice that makes sense
to legalize, tax and control.
Ready to gamble (some more)
Now is not the time for New Jersey to fold em in fight for more gambling

Churchs plan to build
parking lot is unnecessary
In 2007, the Haddonfield Christian Sci-
ence Church bought a piece of property be-
hind its building and knocked down a
house (circa. 1930s). The property was re-
moved from the tax base and added to the
Historical District. The Christian Science
Churchs unapproved plan was to build a
parking lot in a residential neighborhood.
Their justification is that the attendees
sometimes compete with the high school
for on-street parking spots.
Studies have shown that there is more
than adequate parking for the fewer than 40
church members within a comfortable cir-
cumference around the church. There are
currently 125 legal parking spaces within
one block of the church on Sylvan Lake Av-
enue, Roberts Avenue and East Kings High-
way. A congregant need not cross any
street to walk to the church from 60 of these
spaces. Programs are held at the church on
Sunday mornings and Wednesday
evenings. We live in our house 24/7 and the
parking lot is more than an inconvenience.
There will be 22 parking spaces with 22 cars
shining headlights in the adjoining houses.
The parking lot will be just 25 feet away
from the back of our house and will be visi-
ble from our family room, kitchen and bed-
rooms or just 10 feet away from our patio
where we often eat meals. A dangerous
precedent will be set if this parking lot is
approved. What if parking is needed at
other businesses/offices/churches in town?
Can the owners buy adjacent property and
knock down existing houses to build park-
ing lots?
Please attend the Zoning Board meeting
on Sept. 17 to let the board know that the
preservation of the historical and residen-
tial areas is more important than building a
private parking lot for the convenience of a
few, two days a week for a couple of hours.

I would have been paralyzed,
she said.
According to the American
Cancer Society, one out of eight
women in the U.S. will develop in-
vasive breast cancer. While
breast cancer is the second lead-
ing cause of cancer deaths as of
this year, there are more than 2.9
million breast cancer survivors
in the U.S.
I was definitely in shock. But
I kind of had the feeling I would
eventually be dealing with this. I
didnt think I would be 24, she
said, adding her mother, Jeanne,
died of breast cancer in 2006.
According to OPellas aunt,
Maria Forbes, her nieces initial
reaction to her diagnosis turned
into a motto for Team Jeannie.
Wearing flip-flops when she fell
turned into an inspiration to
start selling breast cancer flip-
flops.
Family, friends and communi-
ty members came together to
support OPella.
Initially, Forbes said fundrais-
ers were held at Haddonfield
schools, and then OPellas uncle
set up the website for people to
order flip-flops via PayPal.
They were willing to help in
any way they could, she said.
Team Jeannie managed to
raise $10,000 after expenses. Do-
nations came from the Haddon-
field community, across the U.S.
and as far as Denmark, Forbes
said.
The support and generosity of
this community is amazing,
Forbes said.
Cancer is not slowing OPella.
She tries to get out as much as
she can, going on vacation before
her final chemo treatment and
working at an independent sales
consultant for Thirty-One.
Eventually, she would like to
give back to cancer research and
spread the word about available
resources and awareness for
young women diagnosed with
breast cancer.
Its been a very crazy two
months, but its a good crazy,
OPella said.
To find out more information
about Team Jeannie or to make a
donation, visit www.teamjean-
nie.com. Flip-flops are $10 and
proceeds will go toward OPellas
everyday expenses.

The following incidents were
taken from reports on file with the
Haddonfield Police Department.
On Wednesday, Aug. 7, at ap-
proximately 8:51 a.m., a woman
reported someone stole her wrist-
let wallet from her unlocked car
sometime between noon and 4
p.m. on Aug. 6.
On Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 2:33 p.m.,
a resident of Lincoln Commons
reported someone keyed her car
that was parked in the rear park-
ing lot sometime between Aug. 1
at 9:30 p.m. and Aug. 2 at 11 a.m.
She also reported another vehicle
was vandalized in the same area.
On Tuesday, Aug. 6, a man re-
ported someone stole his wallet
from his unsecured car in the
Acme parking lot. His drivers li-
cense and TB Bank debit card
along with $27 in cash were re-
ported stolen.
Haddonfield police officers re-
sponded to a report of a possible
borough ordinance violation or
health issue concern at the 100
block of Kings Highway East.
Both men who filed the complaint
own businesses on Mechanic
Street and claimed their business-
es and vehicles have been disrupt-
ed by birds, squirrels and mice
from a bird feeder that was set up
in the area. They told officers they
spoke to that individual to resolve
the issue, but were unsuccessful.
According to the report, the
birdfeeder is on private property
and is not in violation of borough
ordinances.
The boroughs zoning office
and Camden County Board of
Health were notified of the situa-
tion. The county advised they
would send an inspector.
A resident reported her sons
long board was stolen outside the
7-Eleven on Aug. 2 at 11:17 p.m.
She said her son went inside the
store and when he came back out
he found his board was gone.
The suspect was identified by
other juveniles in the area and
Haddonfield Police spoke to the
suspects father who reported he
would compensate the victim.

Pedal With A Purpose
Spinathon Sept. 7
Make a difference in the lives
of children while getting great ex-
ercise!
The YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties, a cause-driven
non-profit charitable organiza-
tion, will host the inaugural Pedal
With A Purpose Spinathon in
partnership with Reconstructive
Orthopedics on Saturday, Sept. 7
from 8 a.m. until noon at the Mt.
Laurel YMCA.
Proceeds from the four-hour
spinathon will provide children
in local communities with YMCA
Youth Scholarships and access to
programs that will have a lasting
impact helping them learn,
grow and thrive.
In addition to Reconstructive
Orthopedics, the spinathon is
sponsored by Ivy Rehab.
We are very excited to hold a
new fundraising event that com-
bines physical fitness while meet-
ing our mission of youth develop-
ment and social responsibility,
said Jen Segelken, director of de-
velopment, YMCA of Burlington
and Camden counties. Partici-
pating in youth programs at the Y
helps children develop healthy
habits theyll carry with them
throughout their lives, such as
gaining confidence from learning
to swim or building the positive
relationships that lead to good
sportsmanship and teamwork.
Reconstructive Orthopedics
has been a member of this com-
munity for 36 years. We ap-
proached the YMCA with this
idea because we knew that their
mission to serve the community
not only in Burlington and Cam-
den counties but throughout all of
southern New Jersey is in align-
