DS Storage Manager for Linux

The DS Storage Manager CDROM contains the program code and documentation for the DS Storage Manager. You can use the DS Storage Manager to manage and perform both storage management and copy services functions.

Program code
This CD contains an installation wizard that allows you to install the IBM System Storage DS8000 Storage Manager on the Linux (Red Hat AS 2.1) host system. Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not interrupt the program during the installation process by using abnormal methods (such as CTRL-C, closing the launchpad window, which is open behind the installation windows, or shutting down the power source). An interruption other than through the application windows Cancel button can cause unpredictable effects in the system. You can install the DS8000 Storage Manager in one of the following modes: Graphical Allows you to use an online installation wizard that guides you through the installation process. Unattended (also called silent mode) Involves customizing a response file and issuing a command to complete the installation process.

Documentation
The CD contains the following documentation for installing the DS8000 Storage Manager.
Table 4. Documentation required for installing the DS8000 Storage Manager Title IBM System Storage DS8000 Users Guide Installation and usage instructions Readme file for all supported host systems /doc CD directory /doc File name f2jug01.pdf Click the Users Guide link on the launchpad of the CD README.txt

Perform the following steps to install the DS Storage Manager in your Linux environment using the graphical mode: 1. Log on as a user with root authority. 2. Create a mount point or choose an existing mount point. 3. Determine where you want to mount the DS8000 Storage Manager CD. For example, if you mount the CD in drive /dev/cdrom at mount point /mnt/cdrom. 4. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Type the following command at the command prompt: # mount -o ro /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom 5. Choose the destination paths for the DS8000 Storage Manager components and be sure you have enough space available on the chosen destination. The installation program provides a default installation location (/opt/IBM/DS8000StorageManager) for the component. You can override this by using the installer browse function. When you click Next, the installer analyzes the available space for the location you provide. If there is not enough space, you are not able to proceed to the next panel in the installation process. 6. Change the current directory to the mount point for the CD-ROM drive. For example, if the CD was mounted at the /mnt/cdrom mount point, type the following command: # cd /mnt/cdrom . 7. Run the wizard launcher, launchpad_linux, by typing the following command: # ./launchpad_linux. The installation in graphical mode begins with a LaunchPad facility to launch the installation program wizard. 8. Follow the instructions on the wizard to complete the installation process.

Windows Server 2003 Virtual Disk Service Support

With Windows Server 2003 Microsoft introduced the Virtual Disk Service (VDS). It unifies storage management and provides a single interface for managing block storage virtualization. This interface is vendor and technology neutral, and is independent of the layer where virtualization is done, operating system software, RAID storage hardware, or other storage virtualization engines. This interface module makes it possible for the DS8000 storage server to interoperate with applications that use the VDS Application Programming Interface, denoted as VDS-aware applications, in a Windows environment.

IBM System Storage DS8000 series DS Open API support for Microsoft Virtual Disk Service
The VDS hardware provider supporting the IBM System Storage DS8000 series enables management of hardware RAID arrays in the Windows environment. Specifically, IBM System Storage DS8000 series customers are able to query vital health and status information at the subsystem, drive, and LUN levels, as well as perform LUN management operations on RAID arrays.

The DS8000 series leverage the Microsoft VDS framework to coordinate with VDS-aware applications like Microsoft Diskraid, Qlogic SANSurfer VDSManager, and SANSurfer Express to also create LUNs in the storage array, unmask LUNs to hosts, or delete LUNs.

Multipath Subsystem Device Driver

The Multipath Subsystem Device Driver (SDD) CD contains the program code and documentation for the Multipath SDD. The Multipath SDD is a pseudo device driver designed to support the multipath configuration environments in the DS8000. It resides in a host system with the native disk device driver and provides enhanced data availability, automatic path failover protection, dynamic I/O load-balancing across paths, and path-selection policies for the host system.

Numbering convention
To comply with the industry standard, Multipath SDD uses the following numbering convention for the Version Release Maintenance Fix (VRMF) naming, which consists of a four position identifier (for example, 1.2.2.0):
Position 1 Position Identifier Major SDD version change Description v Increments with a major change to SDD architecture/design. v Resets Positions 2, 3, and 4 to 0. 2 New SDD functions v Increments when a new device type or operating system is supported. v Increments across all release levels of the platform. v Resets Position 3 and 4 to 0. 3 SDD Maintenance level changes v Indicates new operating system release levels with or without new functions (for example, Windows 2000, Windows 2003) v New function that is not related to a specific operating system (for example, Veritas, APIs, new maintenance). v Device firmware update (for example, San Volume Controller 1.1.0 update to SAN Volume Controller 1.1.1) v Resets Position 4 to 0. 4 SDD Fixes v Increments with changes from maintenance, test, PTFs, SEV 1 and 2 fixes. v Resets to 0 for each SDD release and forces Position 3 to increment. This does not apply to the Sun Solaris platform.
