COURSE SYNOPSIS: This course consist of four modules Module 1 Number system and functions Sets: a review of sets. Real numbers: absolute values and inequalities. Complex numbers: operations on complex numbers, equalities of complex numbers, Argand diagrams and polar form. Functions: domains and ranges, one-to-one function, onto functions, composite functions, inverse functions, linear and quadratic functions. Module 2 Differentiation and its applications Limits and continuity: concept of limit, definition of limits, one-sided limit, lefthand and right-hand limit, theorems, continuity at a point, continuity on intervals and squeezing theorem. Differentiation: derivatives, rules of differentiation, d/dx notations, higher order derivatives, rate of change, chain rule, differentiation of trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, exponential functions, implicit functions, parametric functions, inverse trigonometric functions and hyperbolic functions. Application of derivatives: mean value theorem, increasing and decreasing, local extreme values, end point and absolute extreme values, maxmin problems, concavity, point of inflections, vertical and horizontal asymptotes, and curve sketching. Module 3 Integration and transcendental functions Anti-derivatives: indefinite integral, definite integral, fundamental theorem of calculus, integration of transcendental functions. Techniques of integration: integration by simple substitutions, integration by parts, trigonometric substitutions, partial fraction, integrals involving a 2 x 2 , a 2 + x 2 and x 2 a 2 Integration applications: area under a graph, area between two curves, volumes by disks and washer method, volumes by cylindrical shells method. Module 4 Conic section Conic section: Circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. Polar coordinates: curve and area of region in polar coordinates.

COURSE WORK VIDEO CONFERENCING Throughout the academic session 2009/10, there are five video conferencing session will be conducted by the course manager and it is a must for all students. Video conferencing 1 Module 1 Number system and functions Video conferencing 2 Module 2 Differentiation and its applications Video conferencing 3 Module 3 Techniques of integration Video conferencing 4 Module 4 Conic section Video conferencing 5 Module 1 4 ASSIGNMENTS There are two written assignments (handwriting) Assignment 1: Based on modules 1 2 Due date: 30 October 2010 Assignment 2: Based on modules 3 4 Due date: 28 February 2011 Please download the assignment cover and send your assignments to the course manager at PPPJJ, USM no later than the due date. Late assignment will be considered as zero mark. Your assignments will not be returned and please photocopy for your own copy. CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT A test will be given during the intensive course. Materials that will be tested: Modules 1 3 .

INTENSIVE COURSE An Intensive course will be held from November 2010 December 2010. Topics to be covered: Module 3 Technique of Integrations. FINAL EXAM Final exam will be held on March or April 2011. Materials to be covered: Modules 14.
