ATLANTIS

Atlantis (Ancient Greek , nesos Atlantis' island of Atlas ") is the name of amtica1 island, mentioned and described in the dialogues Timaeus and Critias, texts of the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato's writings place the island in the Atlantic Ocean, "in front of the Pillars of Hercules", 2 describe it as "larger than Libya and Asia put together", 3 and designated as a maritime power that 9000 years before the time the Athenian lawmaker Solon hadconquered much of Europe and north Africa, only being stopped by a hypothetical preHellenic Athens, after which they would have disappeared into the sea because of amassive earthquake and a great flood, "in one terrible day and night '.4 The precise description of the texts of Plato and the fact that in them is claimed that tells a true story, has led, especially from the second half of the nineteenth century, during the Romantic period, many conjectures have been proposed on actual existence andlocation of the island. However, we now know that the story presents data anachronismsand impossible, which drops its literal truth. However, we admit the possibility that the myth has been inspired by a background of historical fact linked to a natural disaster, as could be a flood, a major earthquake or volcanic eruption.

LEMURIA
