Description of the match: A truly buoyant 13100 spectators attended this 3 round game between Maccabi Tel-Aviv and FC Basel held in the Bloomfield Stadium, Tel-Aviv. It seemed the hosts (already needing to overturn a one-goal deficit) were going to need a near miracle to progress to the next round as Basel raced to a three goal lead. However, to their credit Maccabi Tel-Aviv gave themselves a glimmer of hope as they fought back scoring twice before halftime. Into the second half, to their managers sheer joy, the hosts came within two goals of progression as Radi sent the partisan crowd into pandemonium. Maccabi Tel-Aviv threw everything at Basel for the remainder of the match, but unfortunately for them it wasnt to be. Basel escaped a near catastrophic defeat and in all honesty were quite fortunate to progress to the next phase.

REFEREE 1
Application and interpretation of the Laws of the Game / match control, tactical approach and management of the game with the special situation(s) of the minute(s): Comments: Clment Turpin showed good knowledge and application of the laws of the game and could differentiate between what was a foul and what wasnt. His approach for this particular game was to let the game flow as much as possible which lead to a really thoroughly enjoyable game for players and fans alike. However, this approach did not detract him from whistling when infringements occured. In a really hostile atmosphere, Turpin did well to make sure that no fights or riots erupted by calming down players with hand gestures and verbal warnings. Minute 4 Description of the situation In the early stages of the game, Turpin showed good alertness and concentration by correctly awarding FC Basel a penalty. MTA #21 lunges into the back of BAS #14 with a high knee. Correct decision.

Disciplinary control, management of players and team officials (bench) with the special situation(s) of the minute(s): Comments: The Frenchman had no time for players who used unfair tactics. He booked many players for unsporting behavior with some offenders intentionally delaying the re-starting of play. Turpin issued seven cautions in this encounter all being undeniably justified and most certainly correct. However, there were also instances where he chose to speak to offenders, warning them about their future conduct. Minute 5 75 Description of the situation MTA #31 is booked for unsporting behavior as he deliberately delayed his departure from the penalty area despite many requests from Turpin. Mohamed Salah of FC Basel was cautioned for leisurely trudging off the pitch when substituted.

Co-operation with assistant referees, additional assistant referees (where applicable) and fourth official: The level of co-operation from the French quartet was at an expected level.

Personality: Clment Turpin seemed very focused but also somewhat relaxed in this game. In an atmosphere of this hostility, diligence and concentration were needed just in case a riot brakes out. Turpin had these attributes in abundance.

General comments, advice on performance and personality: Not the most difficult of tests for Turpin and company. Only one major situation to address and it was correct. The Frenchman looks a very assured and confident official, which is pleasing.

Points discussed in the report:

Positive points:

1) 2) 3)

Physical condition. Card selection. Evaluation of crucial decisions in the penalty area. Many of Turpins decisions were not widely accepted by Maccabi Tel Avivs players which lead to minor demonstrations from the hosts. These discussions were very time consuming and it seemed MTAs players had absolutely no respect for Turpin. Prica (MTA #22) was a serial offender and he berated the official at every opportunity when a decision did not go his way. A second yellow card couldve been possible in these instances.

Points for improvement:
