Many South Bay residents wonder why another freeway spur was never built into the South Bay for easier access for residents to the freeways. The original 1946 master plan for the Southern California freeway system included what was known as the Ocean Freeway/Pacific Coast Freeway, which was to have run along the coast, swinging inland through Redondo Beach and Torrance and connecting to the Harbor Freeway, and extending through Long Beach. This also included a spur called the Manhattan Beach Parkway that would have connected the Ocean freeway to the San Diego Freeway (it would have run from the Ocean Freeway (which at that time was Vista Del Mar) to the San Diego Freeway, roughly
along Marine, Valley Drive, and would have cut across what is now the Los Angeles Air Force Base.), as well as a connector to the Artesia freeway (now the 91). This proposed freeway, of course, created a huge uproar, especially in Manhattan Beach, where the freeway was planned to run near Sepulveda Boulevard, splitting the community in half. Another freeway connecting to the San Diego Freeway roughly following to the east of Hawthorne Boulevard had also been proposed. In 1968, several alternative alignments of what was called the Hawthorne Freeway (route 107) were considered. These included routes connecting from the San Diego Freeway roughly following just to the east of Inglewood Boulevard, and as far west as Prospect through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, then swinging east along the Palos Verdes Peninsula foothills, and terminating at Vermont Ave. (with a planned connection with the Harbor Freeway when the Ocean Freeway was to be extended through Long Beach). The most southernmost route considered would have demolished some homes in Rolling Hills Estates, in the neighborhoods of Montecito, Empty Saddle, and the Empty Saddle Club. Due to funding constraints, and neighborhood opposition, these freeways, of course, were never constructed. Construction of the Harbor Freeway began in 1954 and was completed in 1962. The portion from I-10 south to Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) was originally labeled as US 6 and SR-11. In 1963, US 6 was removed and in 1984, SR11 was renumbered as I-110. Construction of the 405 freeway began in 1957, with completion of the first section north of LAX completed in 1961. The next section south to the 605 freeway was finished within a couple of years thereafter.

Beach Historical Society, has lived in Hermosa for over 70 years, and has done all of the homes renovations himself, which he proudly shows to a visitor. It was pretty dilapidated when I got it, explains Schneider. I had to pour all new footings, and I re-plumbed and re-wired it. I re-shingled the house all by myself at the age of 72. With Schneiders six grandchildren visiting regularly, along with other invited guests, there is an often-used studio with separate access and a large outdoor play area, along with an enclosed hot tub that Schneider installed in 1984.

Schneider was originally from Oklahoma and at 15 years old, bravely drove a car out to California looking for opportunities, as so many early South Bay residents did. Years later, he met his wife, Blanca, and their mutual affection for Hermosa Beach caused them to set down roots in the small but growing community. They bought the home on Manhattan Avenue in 1944 for just $6,000, and rented out three of the bedrooms. Although the home had a changing room, a bathroom, and a shower, one had to go outside the home for access. With Blancas love of entertaining and excellent cooking, the Schneider home soon became known for parties and entertaining. The home has an interesting early history, in that it was built in 1918 and situated on large, corner lot. Schneider purchased the home from Jesuit priests, as just prior to his purchase the home had been donated to Loyola High School and was used
Although the 5400-square-foot-lot now holds a home thats over 3,000-squarefeet in size, much larger than the simpler version many decades ago, this home doesnt feel like an overly large, over-the-top residence like many of our more recent homes in the ever changing South Bay cities. The Schneider home retains the same charm it had when William and his brother, Robert, played in the nearby vacant lots as children, and for hours on the nearby beach. Both brothers have wonderful memories of growing up in this home in Hermosa, a city that they still treasure.

It all started by accident. Designer Marcus Papay was laying sheets of a pattern when he came upon a form that is the basis for Sinuous Lighting. A blend of modern aesthetics and vintage form, the fiberglass-spun shades are made with fiberglass strands and entropy resin, a sustainable, renewable material that is derived from bio-refineries. The shade is then trimmed with either maple or walnut to match the body of the lamp. I love objects that appear fragile, but arent, Papay said. It is all about form with the lights I am creating. Im always grounded in functionality. With a studio in Encinitas, California, Papay started making prototypes of the lamps a little over a year ago and began selling them online and in shops in Palm Springs and San Diego about eight months ago. Wrapping the shades is a relatively quick process, taking only 30 to 40 minutes. However, it takes between one to two days to complete the process and cure the shades. Papay currently offers a floor, table and pendant lamp, which can suit spaces large or small. Depending on size and color, the lamps range in price from $695-$1,250. Right now, the lamps come in five different colors--pacific blue, tangelo, white, daiquiri and carbon. I really have an infatuation with making things and breaking them down to their natural elements and making them more interesting and functional, Papay said. Influenced by his surroundings, Papays designs represent his background and where he now lives and works. With a warm and clean aesthetic to each piece he creates, Papay is focused on combining mid-century modern design with todays California style. Receiving interest in the lamps from all over the country and into Canada, Papay said that hes shipped lamps everywhere from Vancouver to New York to Arizona. However, California continues to be the place where he has received the most interest. It is really a unique, quality product, Papay said. Everything is handmade and all the details are perfect. Allen Sanford has one simple goal in mind each year when planning the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series. We book acts where a 10-year-old can love it and an 80-year-old can love it, Sanford said. Also, we want to do it where you cant get these performers anywhere else. Everyone has something they can enjoy. It really is for everyone. Sanford and his team from Saint Rocke started planning for the upcoming series immediately after the previous one ended, scouring venues and concerts to find the perfect artists to perform on the beach. This year, the performers will include: ZZ Ward, Wayward Sons, Anuhea with Cas Haley and Lou Giovannetti. Taking the stage each Sunday in August, their genres range from blues and hip-hop to big band and swing. I hear or see about 1,000 artists a year. For me, it isnt about how technically good an artist is, it is about really catching the ear, Sanford said. Someone could have a minimal vocal range, but have a resonance to their voice. To me, it is about putting something on the beach that I havent heard, that I know people will like. He felt that way about ZZ Ward, who will kick off the series August 4 at 5p.m. on the south side of the Hermosa Pier. Seeing her perform at South by Southwest
earlier this year, Sanford said she had the most unique sound out of the 30 bands he watched. The Wayward Sons will help plenty of locals rock out the next week with the band playing songs from the 1980s. Local band Fallen Riviera will open the show. For the third week of the series on August 18, Anuhea with Cas Haley will perform original Hawaiian and reggae music that is a perfect fit for the beach. We have two female performers this year, which is new, Sanford said. It switches it up and has the series go in a different direction. Ending the series on a different note than in years past, Lou Giovannetti, along with his 18 piece orchestra and backup singers, will perform big band and swing songs on August 25. I dont think any of the other local summer concerts hold a candle to ours. It is unbeatable, Sanford said. The artistry is on a whole different level and it is really cool to see 7,000 people on the beach. How many places in the world can you go to a free concert with your friends on the beach at sunset with Grade A artists? It just doesnt happen and is really a unique opportunity.
