DRAFT AGENDA FOR SFV/NELA NOW mtg tomorrow, 10:30 a.m., 4351 Woodman Ave (The Garden Cafe) Sherman Oaks: 1. Setting up an Eleanor Bernstein Seegman scholarship fund for young feminists From Eleanor's son: Eleanor Bernstien Seegman was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1920. Her parents both emigrated from the Ukraine, and they met and married in Chicago. Eleanor held Bachelors and Masters degrees in music from the University of Chicago. As a young woman, she was a school teacher. Eleanor moved to the San Francisco bay area in the 1940s, where she met and married Irvin P. Seegman. They had one child, Richard. Eleanor and Irvin were married for 46 years. Eleanor lived in the same house Encino, California for 50 years. She passed away at the age of 92 on December 23, 2012. Eleanor was very active in liberal political causes, and she gave generously to a number of charitable and political organizations, including the National Organization for Women, San Fernando Valley; the American Civil Liberties Union, Los Angeles; the Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, Alabama; the Museum of Tolerance, Los Angeles, and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Washington, D.C. Eleanor is survived by her son, and three grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and a wide circle of friends. 2. Endorsement of Bring Hollywood Home Foundation director Sharon Hardee Jimenez to be L.A. Film Czar

--SFV/NELA NOW/Same Page Coalition to call for expansion of role of Film Czar to include advocacy on the issue of sexual harassment and discrimination (of all sorts) in the entertainment industry 3. SB 491 -- opposed by "Right to Life" -- should we support? --SB 491 will expand the scope of practice for RN Nurse Practitioners; the forces that support compulsory pregnancy came out against it because they claim it will enable RN's to provide prescriptions of abortifacients, which is precisely why we should consider supporting the legislation 4. Same Page Coalition endorsement schedule for 2014; Sheriff & Board of Supervisor races heating up 5. 45th Assembly District Special Election (election: 9/17/13) 5A: Statement concerning Andra Hoffman's reference to Dan McCrory and two other male candidates as boys Jan Tucker proposal for statement: When then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denounced male members of the California Legislature as girlie men we not only publicly denounced him but took issue with his statement by producing an 11x17 poster of three of our male members holding feminist banners with the slogan: Girlie men No. Feminists Yes. What is good for the gander in this case is also good for the goose. We work hard every day for a society in which no one is belittled for their race, gender or sexual orientation. Thats why we are outraged that 45th Assembly District candidate Andra Hoffman would, in her first campaign piece, refer to her opponents as three young boys. The days are long past that any adult candidate for public office would be degraded with the word boy or girl. Our chapter of NOW stands by our endorsement of Dan McCrory, age 58, as the best feminist and strongest progressive in this race. It is an ageist statement, at best. If age is any issue at all, it may be that Andra Hoffman is lucky to have been raised in at a time when her generation was less likely to be exposed to the egregious use of the term boy to denigrate non-white males, an experience that leaves a very bad taste with those of us who are old enough to bristle at this language, even if she did not mean it in that sense. However, as a government teacher, we find it difficult to understand how

she personally could not be cognizant of this historically insulting language used by racists. 5B: LWV request for SFV/NELA NOW to co-sponsor debate on 45th AD --Do other Same Page/Misma Pagina Coalition groups want to join us in co-sponsoring? 6.
