First of all I would like to say thank you to Allah S.W.T. the mighty, for giving me strength and opportunity to be able to complete this assessment on time. Term of Reference
I have been asked by my lecturer to write a discussion paper regarding online marketing research and discuss the issue in a comprehensive way. There are 4 tasks that I need to do, firstly is to differentiate between how HP does their marketing research and market research. Secondly is to describe how HP gets information about their existing customers and their needs through the internet. Thirdly is to explore on how HP uses the internet for market research on their potential new customers and their needs. Lastly, I need to examine the issues relating to international market for HP in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in Malaysia market.

Background of Study
As one of the giants of the computer industry, Hewlett Packard, more commonly known as HP, has found its place in almost all the offices and households. The company has a large range of computers, laptops and different other computer accessories. If we look at the history of HP, it was established in 1939 by two classmates Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett. Their first product was an audio oscillator, which was an electronic device used by the sound engineers. Well, since the very beginning, they were making it large. After all, the Walt Disney Studios was one of the first customers of the HP. They used these oscillators to make their movie Fantasia. However, these days the company is better known for the HP computers and other products in the information technology industry. They have revolutionized the printing technology along with the computers.1 HP is the world's leading PC manufacturer and has been since 2007, fending off a challenge by Chinese manufacture Lenovo, according to Gartner. It specializes in developing and manufacturing computing, data storage, and networking hardware, designing software and delivering services. Major product lines include personal computing devices, enterprise, and industry standard servers, related storage devices, networking products, software and a diverse range of printers, and other imaging products. HP markets its products to households, small- to medium-sized businesses and enterprises directly as well as via online distribution, consumer-electronics and office-supply retailers, software partners and major technology vendors. HP also has strong services and consulting business around its products and partner products. It is the world's largest PC vendor by 2012 unit sales.2 Today, it operates as a diverse company marketing specific products to households, small to medium size businesses and enterprises. HP sells products such as printers and printer supplies, home and business PCs, and industry-standard servers both directly, via online distribution, consumer-electronics and office-supply retailers, software partners and major technology vendors such as CDW and RICOM, Inc.

TASK 1 Differentiate between how HP does their marketing research and market research. Marketing Research has two words, viz., marketing and research. Marketing means buying and selling activities. Research means a systematic and complete study of a problem. It is done by experts. It uses scientific methods. Thus, we can say, Marketing Research is a systematic method of collecting, recording and analyzing of data, which is used to solve marketing problems.3 According to American Marketing Association (AMA), Marketing Research is the systematic gathering, recording and analysing of data about problems relating to the marketing of goods and services. According to Philip Kotler, Marketing research is a systematic problem analysis, model building and fact finding for the purpose of improved decision-making and control in the marketing of goods and services. According to Paul Green and Donald Tull, Marketing research is the systematic and objective search for, and analysis of, information relevant to the identification and solution of any problem in the field of marketing. According to David Luck, Donald Taylor and Hugh Wales, Marketing Research is the application of scientific methods in the solution of marketing problems. A company faces many marketing problems. It faces problems about consumers, product, market competition, sales promotion, etc. Marketing research helps to solve these problems. Marketing research is a systematic process. It first collects data (information) about the marketing problem. Secondly, it records this data. Then it analysis (studies) this data and draws conclusions about it. After that, it gives suggestions (advice) for solving the marketing-problem. So, marketing research helps to solve the marketing problems quickly, correctly and systematically.

Marketing research collects full information about consumers. It finds out the needs and expectations of the consumers. So the company produces the goods according to the needs and expectations of the consumers. Marketing research helps the company to make its production and marketing policies. It helps the company to introduce new products in the market. It helps to identify new-markets.Marketing research also collects full information about the competitors. The company uses this information to fight competition. It also helps the marketing manager to take decisions. Marketing research is a special branch and soul of 'Marketing Management'. It is of recent origin and widely used by manufacturers, exporters, distributors and service organisations. Marketing research is very systematic, scientific, objective and organised. It has a wide scope. It includes product research, consumer research, packaging research, pricing research, etc. Marketing research is a continuous process. It has a few limitations. However, a company cannot survive and succeed without it. Market research is about listening to people, analysing the information to help organisations make better decisions and reducing the risk. It is about analysing and interpreting data to build information and knowledge that can be used to predict, for example, future events, actions or behaviours. This is where the real skill and value of market research lies.4 To describe marketing research, the hp company start the research by defining the problem of the company so that they would learn about the market needs and knowing how to do well in the market and how to avoid falling in the industry. The reason for hp need to know all the details so that they can do something in order to change their strategies and come with solution that will make consumer trust their product. not only they want the customer to trust their product, but they also would want to know why the customer are not buying their products and what are the importance fact that they have missing as the customers have been buying a rather similar products as whatthey have produce. That is thee research that hp needs to know the answer for all the questions and define the problem in order to get a better results so hp would produce better technique to improve on their products.

First step is defining the problem, hp must know the objective of their research would be such as what they want to achieve from the research being done. Then hp company ensure problem arise are true so they can generate the outline for research and define the purpose of their research. Second step is hp determine the research plan that they wanted to use as there are three types of research which is explotary research, descriptive research and causal research. In short, explotary research that make hp company to make some research to be more precise. Apart from that, it can be using literature search and survey in order to know about consumer experience with hp products. When hp company conduct survey, hp would do interview to those who are knowledgeable about hp company. Next, descriptive research are more rigid compared to explotary research as hp predict future demand for a product as hp company need to describe user products. In other words, for descriptive research, hp need to define for who,when, why, and how would their product get through the customers in order for hp to convey opportunities to any changes if necessary. lastly, casual research is through laboratory and experiment on how hp company does the experiment on their product so hp would know if the product meet the expectation or not. Third step is hp need to identify the data and the data sources. There are two categories of data which is primary and secondary data. Secondary data is a data that have been previously collect for some purpose. Primary data is a information that come from sources. The secondary data is for example hp get from their database such as when customers fill their detail in order form while registerd to hp website. For primary data, is when hp get data from survey done such as interview, questionnaire, and etc. Fourth step is the process when hp need to interpreting and reporting the findings. The report should contain chart, tables and diagram on what hp company have research for as it is the best way to communicate the result and it will solve hp problem. Market research, which includes social and opinion research, is the systematic gathering and interpretation of information about individuals or organisations using the statistical and analytical methods and techniques of the applied sciences to gain insight or support decision making. The identity of respondents will not be revealed to the user of the information without explicit consent and no sales approach will be made to them as a direct result of their having provided information. Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ), commonly referred to as HP, is an American multinational information technology corporation headquartered in Palo Alto, California, USA. The company was founded in a one-car garage in Palo Alto by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, and is now one of the world's largest information technology companies, operating in nearly every country. Private ownership is the dominant market system in the United States. Moreover, both home and private businesses are granted the authority for decentralized decision-making. The free system in the American business sector is made evident by the amount of the production and output of private businesses. Statistics showed that about two-thirds of the overall American economic outputs are for the individuals and their private businesses. A third of these output are the only part that goes to the government (US Department of State, 2006). The United States economy is considered as one of the largest in the world. The businesses in the country are mainly market-oriented where most decisions and activities are developed by the people (Wikipedia, 2005). This has been made evident by the annual purchases of the American consumers, which on the average, totaled to more than 5 trillion dollars every year. This suggests that about 80% of the total goods and services produced by US businesses are purchased and supported by the local consumers. The activeness of the US economy is mainly attributed to its rich and diverse business sectors. One of the most important sectors in the country is the manufacturing industry. HP is actually under the industrial machinery sector where computer as well as engines and other equipment are produced. The population of the country is considered as the third most populated country in the world, which is estimated to be around 296 million (Microsoft Encarta Online Encyclopedia, 2005). In addition to size, the United States is said to be a pluralistic society. This indicates that the countrys inhabitants are highly diverse in terms of religions, races and nationalities. In addition to the presence of minority groups, the diversity in the country is also attributable to open trade and influx of immigrant workers. The rise of immigrant workers suggests the growing working sector of the country, which increases the need for computers and technology. Being one of the countries who were able to use the computer and the internet for the first time, the American society is very much adapted to technology. In fact, statistics suggested that the employment sector is continuously using computers and related gadgets in their work activities; this greatly contributed

to the growth of the computer industry. In addition, job openings for computer professionals are also said to double from 1996 until 2006. People had also grown accustomed in using the internet for work, paying bills, reserving airline tickets as well as shopping. Statistics showed that in 1999, a total of 84 million Americans have Internet access either at home or at work.5 Market Research is a more narrow concept because it is research focused on a specific market. While Marketing Research, however, scales on a much broader level. It encompasses areas such as, Research into new products, Modes of distribution and Product development. It can also include promotion research, pricing, advertising and public relations. Both concepts are integral parts of marketing, which is essentially everything that happens before the sale of a product or service. Using the Four Ps to make the Distinction. These outline the four Ps of marketing. Product. Price. Place. Promotion. Marketing Research covers all four of those possible measures to identify and understand consumer preferences. Where on the other hand, Market Research typically covers one of those four measuresplace. Place includes an analysis of a specific market or segment. Market Researchers argue that what they do is customer-oriented and the measurement of market demand only.6 So HP does their Marketing Research for getting information about product and consumer preferences. While Market Research is used for getting information about place customer, competition and the industry in general. Hp uses market research because market research will provide more global information often done in merge view panel and collected questions form hp in the same environment. For this reason it possible to get more general information on a large scale. With markets throughout the world becoming increasingly more competitive, market research is now on the agenda of many organization, whether they are small or large. In developing market research data, hp need to develop it target market audience. Hp must specify a specific group of customers for their product and services so that they would know a group of people that they would target to sell their product by how much will the customers would pay for the products and the customers satisfaction about the product produce by hp company.

TASK 2 Describe how HP gets information about their existing customers and their needs through the internet. Customers can be divided into new customers and existing customers. Customer database is a collection of records of consumer purchasing patterns and histories stored in a computer system and organized so that it can be retrieved quickly to provide information for a variety of uses. Customer databases are useful to marketers when planning promotions for new products, repeat sales, or crossselling techniques. Secondary research is another way of doing marketing research, but distinct from the main study as the information found has been consolidated by others. Secondary search occurs when a project requires a summary or collection of existing date. In contrast to data collected directly from respondents or subject for the purpose of expressing a particular project, (often called empirical or primary research, secondary sources that already exist. This could include reports of secondary sources previous study, newspaper, magazine and journal content, and government and NGO statistics. Sometimes secondary research is needed in the early stage of research to determine what is known already and what new data is required, or to inform the research design. At other times, may make the technique used in the study only. A key area in the study qualified secondary is full of passages of natural resources, usually in the form of a complete list or a list of notes. The secondary research sources divide to two which are the internal secondary research and external secondary research. The internal secondary research such the national product sales, regional product sales, customer usage rates, guarantee cards, customer comments or complaints, sales people, research and development staff, and past research conducted. Then, for the external secondary research are the periodicals, specialist marketing reports, industry magazines, chamber of commerce, government statistics, internet, professional bodies, and trade associations. Internally an organization has access to a wealth of information, which can be a useful tool for decision making for managers. Information available may assist the organization in discovering why sales are decreasing, why customers are not satisfied, and customer usage rates and so on. The sources are being used by company to the research as the secondary research.

Based on the above picture, it shows how hp gets information. All the idea that comes from customers will be used by hp to make more promotion about their products. The hp company will use all the information given to generate more idea and build a promotion that would make user attract to hp product. Customer reviews are an importance component of any customer service program. Successful companies today are those who actually work with customers and integrating their feedback. Smart companies are being proactive about improving their customer service to ask their customers directly what they can do to maintain their business. In order to really find out what customers think about company and their product, the feedback is important. So the feedback that hp het from their existing consumers can help them to become successful company. Customers are the core of everything hp did. Hp listens carefully to what customers needs and desires and collaborates to find new ways to make technology work harder and faster for them. In all hp did, they focus on delivering solution to enable smarter decision and more effective outcomes so customers can overcome obstacles, achieve their ideas and pursue their dreams. Above all, hp committed to the superior long term value they need to grow their business.

Hp may collect information about customers that visits to website, this include sites they see, they click on link and advertisements, search term they entered, and other actions they take in relation to hp website and services. Hp also may collect certain information from browser used by customers to enter hp website, such as Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type and language, access time, the uniform resources locator (url) of selected pages of customers and website URL they browse away from hp website were customers press the link on hp website.

Based on the picture above, it shows hp using voting method. The voting here means that hp using voting in making research. The research done included new and existing customers. All the ideas throw will be vote by the visitor that views hp facebook online community. The website allows users to post new product or service idea for hp. User will vote or promote in this case, the interesting idea that they would like hp to investigate further. Comments and idea can be drop on the post and a discussion session may take place too. Later hp will give results from all the suggestions. Social voting is the faster way to get feedback. It can be tiresome to write long letters of suggestion and feedback to a company when customers find they dissatisfied with the product or services offered.

Scanning a list and voting or comment on issues which has already been identified by others is a new and interesting way to improve customers communication. From here, any users need and want by customers that are relevant will be considered by hp. This is because if customers need a products that cannot be fulfilled by hp or the product need is not relevant, hp will reject the idea because it was hard to make it. Moreover, hp will notice their new customers from the voting session, when customers make order and their name is not in the hp customers details.

Hp obtains information about their existence customers through the internet such as details of customer information. Hp request information includes customer e-mail address, name, home address and telephone number. When customers make purchase, hp may request credit card number and billing information. Hp may also request other data from the customers credit and financ ing request page. Job application may be asked to provide information such as educational and employment background, and job interests data. Hp also may collect information such as business or company information, age, gender, interest, product and service preferences and etc. customers will fill out the form for the information being requested.

In addition to collecting information about hp existing customers, hp also gets the information from other parties. In order to provide customers a more consistent experience and personal interaction with hp, information collected through one source can be combined with information obtained through other hp resources. Hp can also complete the information collected and obtained from other parties. Some of hp services may be co-band and is offering in conjunction with another company. If customers sign up for or use such devices, both hp and other company may receive information collected in conjunction with cobranded service, and may use information according with their respective privacy statements of companies and other agreement with customers.

Task 3 Explore on how HP uses the internet for market research on their potential new customers and their needs.

Referring to the above picture it shows that how hp uses the internet for market research on their potential new customers and their needs. Hp will know about their new customers because there is the registration for new customers, and the data will be saving in hp database. So every time customers login to hp website, those who have sign up they no need to make new registration and fill the form as new customers did because all the data entered before have been save in the database. The benefits that for those registered with hp is that saving time and money with hp exclusive online deals and purchase. Customers will save their time from going to hp branches to make purchasing. Besides that, users also will save their money because by purchasing online there is no need for transportation cost. So it will be benefit for customers to buy online and registered with hp website. Customers also will simply enjoy checkout and the ability to save their shopping cart for late and get special offers and news on the latest products delivering to their inbox email. Based on the registration method, hp will know about their customers and needs of them from Hp Company. When customers have entered their details in the registration form and submit to hp, then the customers will received confirmation email from hp to new customers. This shows that hp using internet to connect with their new customers thus fulfill their needs.

Social networking is a booming industry an ideal platform for companies looking to achieve a modern variety of customers in a variety of demographics with difference buying patterns. Without a doubt, the main goal for hp company is to bring as many customers for hp . hp want to attract more long term customers and strong business relationship that both side will enjoy for years. When hp use social network such as twitter, this social networking site is the higher acceptance among customers, hp must have twitter account too as many people have twitter account. Moreover twitter is one of the most famous social networking. When hp has existing customers that related to social networking site, hp will increase level of acceptance among customers list. With the connection with social media pages help hp build some connections. This is similar with when hp wants to get new customers. So hp use social networking to get to connect with new customers and existing customers. Thus hp knows what customers felt about their products and services.

Twitter is a real time information network that connects customers to the latest information about what they find interesting. Simply find the public streams they find most compelling and follow the conversations. Hp uses twitter to quickly share information with people interested with our products and services, gather real time feedback, and build relationship with customers, partner and other influence people. From twitter, hp will know the new customer because twitter is one of the social network that connect hp to the customers. The potential customers will ask hp in social network for the product or information needed before they become the customers to hp. There are people in hp who will answer all the question being ask about hp products and services in hp official twitter.

The other method used by hp to get to knows about their new customer is by using facebook. Based on the above picture, it shows another method use by hp to get close to their potential new costumers and to get information. At facebook, we can see that hp use the facebook as one of the way to get the potential new customers. This is because while open facebook by their own account , and open the hp page , they just click on the like button that show we have enter the hp facebook page. We can see the difference at the both picture above which show when the page of hp are not being like and after visitor click the like button. When not clicking, visitor just will know about the product but they cant ask anything about the product. But after click the like button , customer will able to ask and give their opinion and suggestion to hp about the product or any misunderstand about hp product. Then, they will know about hp products even they are not yet become the customers to hp product, but by information they get from hp facebook, it will help them to know more about hp. We can see it by use the observation while there is people that ask about the information of hp product and how to get the product. So, from my observation, we can see that, hp obtains information about existing and new customers to make observations. In addition, hp can also learn how to improve their systems for more efficiently. For example, about the service. Customers rarely complain about services done by hp. This shows that hp is doing their jobs really well. Thus customers gain confidence and trust in hp company and their services. Network websites are places of discussion of thoughts, opinions and business deal for people of all over the world. The social networking websites work like a universal discussion board of people of the world. As a result marketers have a chance to empower their brands strength by using these social networks. They also use these social networking websites to increase the popularity of their inventive brand occurrences. These well-liked social networking websites plays a vital role. So, internet uses is important to hp in doing their market research on their potential new customers and the existing customers.

Task 4 Examine the issues relating to international market for HP in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in Malaysia market. Before making a business plan it is important to scan the external environment. This took the form of SLEPT analysis, namely an investigation of Social, Law, Economics, Politics and the influences of technology in business. First is the social issue that focuses it attention on forces within society such as family, friends, colleagues, neighbors and media. Social forces affect our attitudes, interest and opinion. These forces shape who we are as people, the way we behave and ultimately what we purchase. An organization must be able to offer products and services that aim to complement and benefit people lifestyle and behavior. If organization do not response to changes in society thay will lose market share and demand for their product or service. Population changes also have a direct impact on organizations. Changes in the structure of a population will effect the supply and demand of goods and services within an economy. The social issues that are relating to the internal market for hp company in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in malaysia is the laptop become the life style of people nowadays.

By referring to the above picture, we can see that laptop is being the most important thing to people nowadays. Each year there is a rapidly evolving the technology, especially the technology to facilitate our work such as computer technology. Now, computers have proliferated in the community. Laptops that is not familiar to our ear, now almost everyone have it and use it to work and take advantages of the variety of thing. Sometimes we do not think twice to buy a laptop that cost over RM2000. Technology made to meet the evolving need of people rather than just a lifestyle. But, sometimes technology changed the lifestyle of this modern era. Laptop technology has now turned into a lifestyle, especially among students.

As a big company like Hp Company, they must follow the current trend of people nowadays. To follow this current trend, the thing that hp must do is they must make laptops that are easy to bring anywhere and soft. This is because to bring the laptop anywhere, the laptop must not be burden to user. If the laptop is heavy and might make the user sick of bring it, it mean that it is not sufficient and not following the current trend. Then when there is the laptops that make people comfort to bring it anywhere, it will make that company success at the same time following the current trend. So, hp must take advantage in order to sell their product they must make sure their product can be affordable and give benefits to consumers. By doing this, hp can increase their profit when they full fill the customers need and wants. Then the second issues that are relating to the international market for Hp Company in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in Malaysia is about the legal issue. Legal issue is the responsible businesses not only abide by the law, they seek to create standards above minimum requirements. A business must operate by the law. There are two types of law such criminal law and civil law. The issue that is under the legal factor is the issue tariff and duty rates in order to import goods to Malaysia

By referring to the above picture, we can see that the issue is about the tarrif and duty rates in Malaysia. Malaysias economy has been growing rapidly for several years now and so are a number of export and import opportunities in malaysia. Rapid economic growth has been achieved mainly by its ability to produce product demand around the world. Because of the strong economy and high purchasing capacity, the population of malaysia also spending a lot of money on import products. The main produst that can be import in malaysia are civilian aircraft engines and its related parts, materials used for producing steel, telecommunications equipment, computer accessories, semiconductors, machinery for

industry, measuring instruments, plastic materials and electric apparatus. Fast growing import in malaysia include drilling and oilfilled equipments, soybean, corn, business machinery excluding computer, dairy products and iron and steel mill products. Written declaration is required for all commercial goods are taxable and non-taxable will be imported. This should confirm the report completely and accurately the number and description of packages and goods, the value, weight, and measure or quality of all imported goods. It also must state the country of origin in the declaration form. Importers must submit a statement to the customs at the place of import. For the documentation, all goods imported, whether dutiable or not, must be specified in the specified form and submitted to the customs office at the place of import. Hp company need to have the license and follow the rules and regulation in order to make the import their products to malaysia. Hp also need to value their products. for the purpose of determining import and export duties payable on an ad valorem basic, goods are valued in accordance with the definition of value under section 2 of the customer Act of 1967. "Value" as defined under the act can be summarised as the price at which the goods are sold freely in the open market by the hp to any buyer not associated in business with him. As long as there is no association between the hp company and buyer, the transaction value established between them will be accepted as the open market value. However, when the hp company restricts sales to agents, sole distributors or associated firm then the selling prices cannot be accepted as open market value. Such prices need to be adjusted to conform with the definition of "value" in the Customs Act of 1967. The relationship between hp and buyer is taken into consideration when a price adjustment by RECM is made. RCEM's authority to value or assess goods, which incorporates the notion of a price adjustment, is provided under Section 13 of the Customs Act of 1967. All enquiries regarding valuation and assessment of imported goods can be made to the Customs Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia intends to implement the WTO Agreement of Customs Valuation by 1997. The import licenses by hp company which may be required by a proper officer of customs.7

Next, the third issue that are relating to the international market for hp company in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in Malaysia is about the economic issue. All business effected by the national and global economics factors. National and global interest rate and fiscal policy will be set around the economy. Economic climate is determined how customers, suppliers and other stake holder organizations such as suppliers and lenders to behave in society. Economic recession will have high unemployment rate, low purchasing power and low stakeholder confidence. Conversely a booming or economic growth will have a low unemployment rate, higher purchasing power and high stakeholder confidence. A successful organization will respond to economic conditions and the behavior of stakeholders. Furthermore, the organization will need to review the impact economic condition have on their competitors and the appropriate response.

The economic issues that are relating to the international market for hp company in order to emphasize their marketing strategy in malaysia is the salary of guar, factory worker and other work that gain the salary minimum RM500 and above but below than RM1000. How , hthe need to live their live with their children and all the expenses that need to pay by them. So to avoid this kind of problem, hp as a company that understand the customers need and want, as a suggestion they would sell a laptop that can be affordable by the customers of poor, low class level. This is because our government want to help Sabah resident that stayed in Sabah which the country are large and contains of residents that lack of knowledge about information technology. Besides, the laptop was given to students. Student that cant afford to buy laptop may use this opportunity to get one. We already knew that, those live in Sabah, mostly in rural areas, there are not well known with using the technology. This is because they are not exposed about technology and lack of knowledge in IT. So, our government takes responsibility to make them know and have their own IT thing such as laptop. So , they can use it for their own use and for students, it help them to get more knowledge easily and be the same level with the people that are outside of rural area. The other thing about this issue is to help reduce burden on people in Malaysia. The government understands the difficulties faced by the people following the increase in prices of goods, and strives to find way of easing the burden, said the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin 8 We can see from the statement by the Deputy Prime Minister, it mean that government want to help the people by helping them to have a laptop. Because of the increase in price of goods nowadays, this is one of the way why government keep helping poor people such as in Sabah resident.
