Message from the Mayor

Every year, the changing leaves and shorter days signify that winter is on its way. While the gardens and grass are replaced with a blanket of snow, the people of Drayton Valley are busy gearing up for an exciting fall and winter season. We are not a community that hides away when those cold winds begin to blow. Here in Drayton Valley we celebrate new and existing ways to be involved in the community. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of Drayton Valley or visiting for the first time, the 2013/2014 Fall & Winter Community Guide to Arts, Learning, Recreation and Support Services will show you how to make the most of your time here. Skate on our indoor ice rinks or our many ponds; cross-country ski through beautifully groomed trails; hit the slopes at our ski hill; toboggan on the hills at our unique waste management facility on Family Day. Winter is also the perfect time to take up a new hobby or better yet, volunteer. No matter your interest or ability, there is something here for you in Drayton Valley. Be sure to take advantage of our rich recreational culture of family, friends and fun and use this guide to discover the abundant activities and services offered in our community. Welcome to Brazeau County! There are many things to see and do during the fall and winter months in Brazeau County, so we hope you get out there for some adventure and fun. Whether you are a resident or visiting here for pleasure, we hope you find this Fall & Winter Community Guide an informative resource. A highlight within Brazeau County during the fall and winter months is visiting the Eagle Point- Blue Rapids Provincial Park and recreation park system. Within the park you will enjoy skiing, tobogganing, snow shoeing or simply just a refreshing walk on the many groomed trails. After a full day of adventure, we invite you to return into town to relax with a good meal at one of our many restaurants or perhaps take in a movie with family and friends. Please use this guide to direct you to all the amenities and services offered in our great community; whether you are looking for arts, learning, recreation or support service organizations, its here for you. Welcome to our first ever Drayton Valley and District FCSS comprehensive guide to arts, learning, recreation and support services. Whether you are new to the area or have been here for many years this guide will be your tool to find out what is going on in and around Drayton Valley. This guide will also provide you with information on the variety of resources available to you. This guide will be distributed twice a year: in September we will release the Fall & Winter edition and in April we will release the Spring & Summer edition. We will do our best to ensure that advertising rates for the publication are reasonable and affordable. We realize that from time to time there are changes in agency information and we will make every effort to keep our information current. Please let us know if you become aware of any changes. Block Parties
How can a barbeque fight crime?
Grilling isnt just for suspects! Its also key to tackling crime. Throwing a block party is a fun and easy way to help you get to know your neighbors. Research shows that communities have lower crime rates when neighbors know and care about each other. So take a step to building a safer community and hold a block party. Involve local businesses and residents. Invite people you know and people you dont. Make it an event that welcomes families and singles, young and old, newcomers and old-timers. Ask your community leaders and police officers to come and mingle. Most of all, create an event that feels like the neighborhood you want to have.

Communities in Bloom
At the provincial 2012 Communities in Bloom awards we were given the maximum five blooms out of five. We were also recognized as the top community in our population class in the entire province. Special recognition was given to the Eldorado Eco-Garden. Communities in Bloom is about much more than just looking good. Clean streets and attractive flower beds are important. But the judges are also looking for an active and engaged community with a great volunteer base and a real sense of community spirit.
We are delighted that Drayton Valley will be hosting the 2013 Communities in Bloom Provincial Awards Dinner taking place on September 14th, 2013 at the MacKenzie Conference Centre. The Day will be spent showcasing our community to the 30 or more different participating communities. There will be two tours available, Tour #1 will be Around Town and Tour #2 will be an interactive tour with Eagle Point Blue Rapids Parks Council. In the evening there will be presentations made from our keynote speakers, Bernice Taylor from the Drayton Valley Early Childhood Development Centre and a representative from Eagle Point Blue Rapids Park Council. Child Care Providers- The Child Care Centre has been running an accredited program for four years, engaging children and families in healthy development. A hub in our community with a keen focus on early intervention as well as enhanced social and physical skills in preparation for kindergarten. Graffiti Removal Program

Graffiti can be defined as the defacing of public or private property by painting, drawing, writing, etching or carving without the property owners permission. It takes away from the beautiful image of our community we all work so hard to maintain. FCSS wants to partner with you to wipe out graffiti in our community! We have graffiti removal kits which you can access for free.
P.O.U.R Program
The Towns P.O.U.R. water-conservation program is back, with even bigger benefits! Take a look at the 2013 brochure to see if you are now, or can be, eligible for a $100.00 credit on your utility bill, as well as the draw for an additional $500.00 credit at the end of 2013. If you are installing new toilets, a dishwasher, a washing machine, pressure reducers, or rain barrels go to www.draytonvalley.ca and check out the brochure and information package! What the Public Can Do to Help with graffiti

If you see graffiti being applied, its a crime in progress. Call 9-1-1 The quick removal of graffiti is the most effective means to prevent further acts of vandalism, so property owners should remove graffiti within 24 hours after it appears. Volunteer your time, donate supplies or help in any way you can to eliminate graffiti in your community. Adopt a street, park, school, church, or business that is a target for graffiti vandalism. In addition to removing graffiti consider planting trees, bushes or flowers that may deter graffiti. If you would like more information on how to get a kit and/ or assistance with graffiti removal please call Jennifer at 780-514-2206.

Snow Angels Program

Winter is approaching quickly and we could use your help. Drayton Valley and District FCSS is looking for volunteers of all ages to donate their time to help seniors clear their walkways and driveways. Set an example of Community Spirit by helping those around you. Shoveling times are flexible and work around the volunteers schedule. For information about volunteering or if you are a senior who would like to sign up for the program please call 780-514-2206 for more information.
Household Garbage Collection weekly (either Thursday or Friday) Recycling Collection bi-weekly (either Thursday or Friday) Recycling depot on Industrial Rd open 24hrs, 365 days/week Tips: Please ensure you have 3 feet of clearance at the front, back, sides and top of your bin. To avoid littering garbage during collection, the lid of your cart MUST CLOSE. Any carts with overflowing waste will be stickered and NOT collected. Please note! Extra bags and/or cans of garbage will not be collected! The waste carts have a 200-pound weight limit. Use your black waste cart for household waste ONLY to keep within the 200 pound limit. To avoid missing pickup, please have your carts out before 7 AM on the morning of your collection day. Blue Bag Recycling pickups are every other week on the same day as your waste pickup.
Fall Clean up
This program includes the pickup of large household items. Watch the town newspaper and website for details on what can be placed for pickup, when your area is scheduled for pickup and the process. October 7 11, 2013

Do You Know Someone That You Would Like To Nominate For A Sustainability Award?
Individuals or groups can be nominated for their efforts and initiatives that fall under the pillars of the Community Sustainability Plan. Awards are given periodically throughout the year and there is no deadline for application. Its time to show how green Drayton Valley shines! Application forms can be picked up in person at the town office or downloaded off of our website, www.draytonvalley.ca .
Arts and Culture
The award categories are as follows: Environmental - Individuals or groups that engage
in activities or initiatives that address sustainable living, conservation/preservation, transportation, waste management, energy and water consumption, development standards, emissions and effluents, and hazardous materials. These initiatives contribute to a cleaner environment, a community culture of respect, minimize per capita greenhouse gas emissions and enable healthy activities.
Cultural Individuals or groups that host a variety of social, visual

and performing arts, entertainment, cultural and heritage events, aid in the recognition and/or promotion of our heritage, historical relevance, or multiculturalism, all of which play an important role in building a culture of sustainability in the community.
Social Groups or individuals that maintain positive initiatives that

build a vibrant and healthy community for all ages. Initiatives may include, but are not limited to, projects that support peace, social justice, volunteerism, reduce poverty, ethnic diversity, and human rights.
Youth an individual or group composed of youth that provides a voice for younger generations, encourages youth participation in the community, or works behind the scenes to create positive collaborations with others. Economic Individuals or groups that foster sustainable economic
development and growth, leading to a diverse and prosperous community. The business practices enhance both the environmental and economic performance of all businesses in the community to create a community that attracts further economic growth and families.

Acting Out
Acting Out is an after school drama program for youth in Grades 6 - 12. Each week participants spend 30-40 minutes working on a theatre skill such as characterization, blocking, voice projection etc. The remaining time is spent working on a scripted piece for presentation at the showcase scheduled at end of the session. Governance - Governments, organizations, agencies, and individuals that have had a direct impact on the lives of citizens in a community through policy choices, regulating powers, resource allocation, leadership, and decisionmaking forums. Interagency collaboration in a small community can lead to many innovative initiatives that contribute to positive change.

AIM For Success

Aim for Success, which is a mental health capacity building project based here in Drayton Valley. Our project works in the area of promotion, prevention and early intervention of mental health in children, youth and families. Currently we actively work in all the wild rose school division elementary and junior high schools in Drayton Valley, Alberta. We provide in class programs that help children develop their array of resiliency skills that help them to become socially successful both in school and outside. We offer universal programs such as roots of empathy, friends for life, fun friends, boys council and girls circle. We also offer small group programs in areas such as anger, stress & anxiety management and restorative justice to name just a few. We also provide both spring break and summer programs that support youth around transitioning into junior high. Cooking with Friends

Cooking with Friends is a community kitchen, where a group of people gather to cook delicious, nutritious, low cost meals. Participants will learn how to stretch a food budget, learn important skills, gain knowledge, and foster social support networks. Both lunch and childcare will be provided and registration is required for you and your child(ren). Every six weeks on a Monday (6-8 times per year from Sept. Evergreen parent link centre

Programs at the Evergreen Parent Link Centre (PLC) are FREE, unless otherwise stated. PLC provides service to families with children aged 0-6. The Evergreen PLC provides high quality, comprehensive, accessible, community based programs that comply with Provincial standards of Excellence, and responds to the changing needs of parents and families. PLC offers Parent/Child Drop In Programs that cater to young families in our community and surrounding areas. Join us for informative sessions, interaction with other parents and children and some FUN!
Babys Essentials
Babys Essentials is a program for families who need extra support to ensure the health and happiness of their babies. Babys Essentials provides coupons to participating families in order to purchase nutritional assistance for nursing mothers, diapers, or formula.
Preschool Gym
This is a FREE cooperative and engaging preschool drop-in program for children ages 0-6; crafts, obstacle courses, and social play. From September June Tuesdays 10 11:30 a.m. at the Alder Flats Community Hall Wednesdays 10 11:30 a.m. at the Faith Covenant Church in Breton
Nutritious Beginnings
Nutritious Beginnings is a Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program that helps and supports pregnant women. This FREE program provides vitamins, food coupons for milk, fruit, and vegetables, information on healthy eating, baby gifts and supplies, nursing support, and a place to meet others for friendship and support. This is a FREE service provided by our Family Support Coordinator; one to one support from our experienced and knowledgeable staff, either in-home or at our offices in Drayton Valley. We can also provide information and assistance on how you can connect to local resources and to other families. This service can help you to feel more empowered in your parenting skills and help increase your self-confidence while building on your relationship with your child(ren).
After School Program

Brighter Futures offers an interactive program for students in Grades 1 3. Each session offers students opportunity to complete homework, enjoy a healthy snack, and participate in various activities such as crafts, gym activities and interactive group work with their peers that focus on developing healthy bodies by making healthy choices or mental well-being through empathy training, problem solving, and social skills training. Offered in the Fall and Spring for 6 weeks on Wednesdays 3 5 p.m. at Breton Elementary School This program is made possible through partnerships with Breton FCSS, Wild Rose School Division, and the Breton Elementary Family Wellness Worker.

Parenting Workshops
FREE workshops facilitated by our Family Support Coordinator; discipline, potty training, blended families, Nobodys Perfect, and various other family support topics are available. Times and location TBD as demand requires. These workshops are made possible through partnerships with the Evergreen Parent Link Centre and DV Read & Learn.

This is a chance for caregivers to come and enjoy fun arts and crafts with their children. Second Step
Second Step is a program offered in Kindergarten classrooms; children learn about empathy and compassion, friendship skills and problem solving, emotion management, and skills for listening and learning. Mental health first aid workshops

In Canada, one in three will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime. The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Canada program aims to improve mental health literacy, and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague. MHFA Canada is an evidence based program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. In this program you will learn how to: Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems. Provide initial help. Guide a person to professional support. This program aims to: Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others. Provide help to prevent mental health problems from developing into a more serious state. Promote the recovery of good mental health. Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem. The skatepark Committee was formed in 2007 to address the deficiencies of the existing park and since then, this youth driven committee has worked very hard to make its dream of a modern BMX /Skatepark a reality in Drayton Valley. At their core, skateparks are the new meeting place. They are the point of congregation for young people and their parents. The sport is innovative and the language is unique. But the result is easily understood; skateboarding is an activity that combines challenge, athleticism and skill at its highest level. Newly constructed , the skatepark is located at 4804-44 Street. 1) Be Patient
In simple terms, this means, Wait your turn! Pay attention when other people are riding.
2) Learn the Lines

Stand and watch other riders for a few minutes before venturing into the park so that you can learn the traffic patterns and not ride against the flow of other riders.
3) Cross with Care

Crossing the Skatepark from one area to another can be very dangerous, always look both ways before crossing.
4) Be Considerate of the Young Kids

Remember everyone has to start somewhere. Take the time and explain the rules of skateboarding and help them out.
5) Dont Trash the Park

Always pick up after yourself, dont leave your garbage lying out to be blown around or picked up by someone else. Its your duty to keep the park and street clean from your garbage.
6) Be Respectful
If you show respect to others and the park, you will earn respect for yourself. Your actions will impact the perception of the park, so take responsibility and follow Skatepark etiquette at all times.

We are a nonprofit social club involved in the enjoyment of equestrian trail riding. The Pembina Crisis Connection Society (PCCS) was established in April 1990 to coordinate resources and educational opportunities focused on the prevention of all forms of violence directed towards ones self or others. Pembina Crisis Connection Society provides transportation to persons wanting to leave an abusive relationship to a shelter outside of the Drayton Valley Area. Beehive Support Services Association operates the Drayton Valley Bottle Depot, in association with the Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB), the organization responsible for the collection and recycling of beverage containers throughout Alberta. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is more than a catch phrase to us ... its a practice that produces a cleaner Drayton Valley and a cleaner Alberta. It generates revenue for BSSA, meets a community sustainability need, and employs staff, including a number of the clients in our employment program. We also support the Stollery Childrens Hospital and the Cans for Kids program.

We share devotions, a short business meeting, a program (ranging from religious topics to crafts) and fellowship.
West End Pool Society Breton | (780) 696-2391 A group of men and women from Breton that travel to Leduc once a month to play Bingo. All proceeds raised help send the Breton Elementary Students to swimming lessons free of charge.

Story Time - Breton Municipal Library holds a half-hour Story time for 3 to 5 years olds on Thursday from 11 to 11:30 at the library. This is a drop-in program so no pre-registration is required. - FREE Rhyme Time - Join Patti from DV Read & Learn for some fun with your little ones This group meets every Friday from January to May from 10:00-11:30 am in the basement of the civic center. This is a great time to interact with your pre-school child. FREE Breton Womens Conference - Saturday October 19 - Join us for a day of energizing speakers, learning and the opportunity to spend time with other women from our community. Get your sisters, mothers, daughters and girlfriends together for a day of wellness and pampering. Tickets available at the Village of Breton office. $25 / ticket. Includes keynote speaker, break out sessions, lunch, gift bag and entertainment. Babysitters Certificate Course - Dates TBA - Based on the Alberta Safety Councils Program. Participants must be 111/2 years old at the time of the course. This course will be held if there is enough interest. Please call for more information. Cost $20/participant. Big Buddy Mentoring Program - We are looking for adult Mentors to meet with their little Buddy twice a month over the school lunch hour. Program runs February - May. Please call for more information, Halloween Hoopla - Join us for a safe and fulfilled Halloween night at the Breton Community Centre. Games and treats for everyone. Older Adults Exercise Program - Friday mornings at the Breton Golden Age Centre - older adults are invited to participate in a low impact program. Work at your own level from a chair or standing. $1 / class - Drop in Community Christmas Dinner - Join us for a traditional Christmas Dinner - This is for anyone in the community that does not have someone to spend Christmas with, is not able to be with friends and family during Christmas or maybe you have to work on Christmas Day. Date to be announced. Direct Services - Home Support Services Services are available to assist with routine light housekeeping, shopping, and meal preparation. Rates are determined upon income level, ranging from $6.50-$9.50/hour. Service available in the Berrymoor, Lindale, Carnwood, Buck Creek and Breton areas. Additional Services Food Bank and Christmas Wishes Referral Subsidy Application Assistance - (OAS.CPP,GIS,GST ect.) Meals on Wheels
