TASK 1 1a Set up a system to record all the events relating to your project from the time that you have your initial ideas to the presentation of the final solution. This should take the form of a logbook and a planning chart, both of which can be in paper or electronic format. Research a suitable topic for your project, write a proposal and make a list of the resources that you will need to complete it. Discuss the project proposal with your assessor, agree a final outcome and decide on a project title. Obtain written confirmation from your assessor that the project aims are realistic and achievable and make first entries in your logbook. During the lifetime of your project update your logbook and other planning aids so that you maintain a complete record of what happened. 1b Maintain project records which are detailed, concurrent and clearly show the progress you made. Make reference to any difficulties which you experienced and explain how you overcame them. These should be recorded in your logbook and cross-referenced to a tracking sheet so that the assessor can easily identify your comments. TASK 2

Write a technical specification for the product or system which you are going to manufacture, modify or test. Bear in mind that because you will be checking your end product against this specification it should contain information which is prescriptive. Write an operational specification for the project. Agree these specifications with your assessor and ask them to sign this off in your logbook. With the aid of a flow chart, write a set of procedures which you will be following in order to progress the project to a satisfactory conclusion.

TASK 3 3a Produce outlines for three potential solutions which meet the requirements of the technical specification Present your ideas as three sets of annotated sketches which are sufficiently detailed so that you can discuss your proposals with your assessor. Evaluate each solution against the project specification and select the best one for development. Bear in mind that if you plan to manufacture something, this will probably be done in a institute workshop or workplace workshop and you should check to see if the required resources will be available, e.g. materials, technician support, equipment.

National Institute for Industrial Training

3b Refine or modify the original technical specification so that it has at least ten specification points against which the final solution can be checked. Produce a plan to develop the chosen solution, making reference to resources and the regulations which will influence the manufacturing process.

3c The second part of Task 3a asked you to evaluate each proposed solution against the project specification and to select the best one for development. The following tasks link to 3a and build on evidence presented. Use an evaluation matrix to carry out a formal analysis of your design proposals. Use two other formal comparison methods to evaluate your proposals and influence your choice of which design to develop. Justify in detail why you chose the particular design proposal which you are going to develop. TASK 4 4a Prepare a resource plan which should include details of: materials and components that need to be bought or borrowed tools and test equipment that you will be using any specialised technical help you may need access to IT equipment and software packages.

Using these resources produce the project solution. Monitor your progress and record this in your logbook. Review your progress with your assessor. For these tasks you will need to obtain witness statements or observation records to support your evidence. You may also wish to record progress using digital images which can be pasted into the written report that you will be producing for Task 5.

4b Go back to the technical specification you produced in Task 2 and see if your developed solution conforms to it by carrying out tests and measurements, etc. Record any measurements and observations made. You may wish to record some of your evidence using digital images or video clips. If the developed solution does not conform to specification:
4

National Institute for Industrial Training make modifications to solve the problem (if time allows) note the problem and refer to it in Task 5

TASK 5 5a Put together a written project report of at least 12 pages. The report could be written in a style that would be acceptable to someone working in a design environment in industry. It can be handwritten, but a much better option is to word process it so that charts and digital images can be included.

5b

Prepare and deliver a short verbal presentation about your project. The presentation need not be longer than 10 minutes (including questions) and you will probably want to use a PowerPoint presentation to support your delivery.

TASK 6

In Task 1 you were asked to set up a system to record all the events relating to your project from the time that you had your initial ideas to the presentation of the final solution. During the life of the project this record will have been added to in various ways, e.g. handwritten jottings in your logbook, odd pieces of paper, jottings, sketches, etc. If you are aiming for grading criterion M3 you need to carry out this process in an orderly and well-structured way so that someone else looking through your work can easily see the developmental process taking place. Every step of the project should be recorded with all actions and decisions traceable. Task 5a asked that you produce a written report of your activities. Present your report to a standard which allows it to be put on display and read by a variety of people who work in the industry. For the benefit of someone who is not an engineer, it should contain an overview section explaining what you achieved in non-technical terms.

TASK 7 Provide evidence to prove that during the life cycle of your project: you adopted the role of a final year apprentice working in a design/development environment, i.e. someone with a degree of responsibility in your dealings with your assessor you regarded them as a senior engineer in a company - there to offer you strategic guidance but not to get involved at a detailed level
5

National Institute for Industrial Training decisions that you made during the lifetime of the project were fully justified and documented you demonstrated a high level of self motivation with requests for help and guidance being made only when necessary. For this task you will need to obtain witness statements or observation records to support your evidence.

TASK 8 Go back to the written report you produced for Task 5a and add an 800 word section which critically evaluates the management of the project and how well the finished solution conforms to its specification. The purpose of this task is to get you to think about what you might do differently if you were to carry out another project. Think about answers to the following questions: Did I make best use of my time? Were there problems accessing resources such as a workshop? Were delivery times of materials and components too long or problematic? Was I overambitious in what I was trying to achieve in the time allocated? Does the finished solution conform to specification within acceptable tolerance bands? If the finished solution does not conform to specification, what needs to be done to correct the problem? If the finished solution conforms to specification is there anything that could be done to make it even better? Were there any other issues that impacted on the development process?

GUIDANCE NOTES It is important that you keep your logbook up-to-date and hold regular review meetings with your assessor. Correspondence such as emails, notes and any other forms of communication should be filed. Visits to industry need to be logged and practical activities photographed so that images can be pasted into the final report. The tasks are generic and when carrying them out it is important to think about how evidence of successful completion is presented to the assessor and verifier. On completion of the project, the following items of evidence should be made available to your teacher/tutor so that the grading criteria can be tracked against them: a logbook evidence of planning, e.g. a Gantt chart a formal report technical drawings a print-out of the graphics used to support your verbal presentation, e.g. a PowerPoint file hardware (if you manufactured something) witness statements and digital images a folder containing edited research material and correspondence. Be careful not to spend too much time on Task 4, which is the practical activity involving the use of equipment and materials. If a substantial amount of manufacturing is required then sub-contract it out, as would happen in industry, but be aware that you are responsible for managing the process.
