Dear friends please help me to find out "What does Regenerative air pre-heater means, why they named

so"?
There are generally two kinds of air pre heaters 1. Recuperative(tubular) type and 2. Regenerative type, can anybody tell why they have been named so. 1 month ago

These are of static construction and hence there is only nominal leakage through expansion. Hear is being recovered (recuperated) from one system to the other on a continual basis. In Regenerative type, the heating medium flows through a closely packed matrix to raise the matrix temperature and then air is passed through the matrix to pick-up the heat. Either the matrix or the hoods are rotated to achieve this and hence there is slight leakage through sealing arrangements at the moving surfaces. The matrix is traveling through the hot zone, picking up heat (regenerating), and then through the cold zone, giving up heat. It's more of a cyclic process. Tubular Air preheater (Recuperative):

This usually consists of large number of steel tubes of 40 to 65 mm dia. either welded or expanded into the tube plates at the end. Either gas or air may be allowed to flow through the tube. Gas through the tube normally requires higher size tube and vertical flow to reduce fouling. Single or more passes on the gas side and multipass cross flow on the air side usually fits in with the overall plant design. The portion of airheater at low temperature zone is designed normally with a shorter tube length so as to facilitate maintenance of surfaces due to corrosion and fouling. In some cases instead of using boiler flue gases, separate external firing is used particularly during starting. Plate Type Air preheater (Recuperative): These comprise of parallel plates which provide alternate passage for gas and air. This type is simple and compact compared to that of tubular type. The narrow passes between plates make the cleaning tedious but with shot cleaning method it is improved. But replacement is a major task. Ljungstrom Type (Regenerative): The heat transfer elements are rotated at a constant speed and they pass alternately through gas and air passes. The axis of rotation may be horizontal or vertical. The drive is normally electrical operated through reduction gear with compressed air motor as stand-by the plates forming the elements (matrix) may be varied in spacing and thickness and cold ends are made of special corrosion resistance alloy such as corten or enameled to achieve corrosion resistance. This type is very compact and lends easily for ducting arrangement Effective cleaning of heat-transfer surface by soot blowing is possible. Rothemuhle Type (Regenerative): This type is the same as the Ljungstrom type -except that the matrix element is stationary and the air gas hoods rotate. Again axis of rotation may be horizontal or vertical 1 month ago Unlike Like

Ragupathy Saravanan Very true and clear explantion - in Rothmule type the hood alone rotates and swipes the flue gas so that the Power consumption is less for Rothmule type and more for Lunjstrom type. 1 month ago Unlike Like

Syed Aqeel Ahmed Excellent explanation Brian, could you please share your experience regarding Chemical addition during washing to minimize the washing duration and water consumption for Ljungstrom Type (Regenerative), and to minimize the leakages through Mechanical seals. AbdelrahmanUnfollow Follow Abdelrahman Abdelrahman Bashir Good and very specific explanation Brain. I have worked with tubular air preheater in one of NEI project 1981 and also with Ljungstrom type air preheater horizontal shaft 1990(ALstom - Germany) and a vertical shaft one 2007 (Howden Power) and both horizontal and vertical arrangements are OK if routine maintenance are followed correctly. On the tubular type we have, the heating surface are glass tubes , it gets fouled quickly and the on load cleaning is a bit critical and require careful operators as it may damage the glass tubes and even the tube plate gets corroded quickly. The tubular type require large area for installation. I believe now a day the regenerative air preheater is more practical for new power plant. 1 month ago Unlike Like

BrianUnfollow Follow Brian Brian Hulse @Syed Aqeel Ahmed: although I have learned many things about many types of power plants and their associated equipment over the years, the bulk of my operational

experience is with aero derivative gas turbines. Thus, I unfortunately have no insights to share with you on your question about cleaning practices. Perhaps Abdeirahman Bashir could chime in with his experiences? 1 month ago Unlike Like

RidzuanUnfollow Follow Ridzuan Ridzuan Ibni I found Mr. Hulse gave very specific explanation of the type of air preheater. Maintaining Ljungstrom preheater is definitely a challenge when control abnormalities occur. Most of the time find it hard to explain to operation guys the gap setting during cold and hot condition. 26 days ago Unlike Like

TomUnfollow Follow Tom Tom Cook Indeed, here around Los Angeles, CA there is an installed base of over 6,800 MW of gas-fired generation with Ljungstrom/Regen type APH's constructed from around 1953 to 1971. The older units in the 100-200 MW range are mostly the horizontal type and the newer, larger units vertical type. They definitely require careful maintenance. Over the years, they have had more baskets and seals replaced than I could count. Another issue around here is the addition of SCR's for emissions control that have made the Hot End Flue Gas cooler, plus the Ammonia Slip challenge, all tough on the baskets. Some units experimented with an APH Bypass for lowload operations. Washing and drying these APH off line or steam cleaning on line is a customized process for each unit and situation. If you steam blow, it tends to drop the corroded particles of the baskets onto the surrounding community. Then of course, if you water wash, there is the problem of what do with the effluent, as it is laden with metals that cannot just go to the ocean. 23 days ago Unlike Like

Syed AqeelUnfollow Follow Syed Aqeel Syed Aqeel Ahmed @ Tom, Ammonia slip can be controlled by SBS injection which will not only restrict the slurry formation, but it will remove SOx too. Regarding washing effluent; it can be collected in a pond which can be discharged after clarification, and dry sludge cakes can be shifted into controlled waste land fill. 22 days ag
