Symptoms and treatment of Thyroid disease

Thyroid gland is situated in the neck and produces a hormone called thyroxine, which helps in regulating body metabolism. While deficiency of thyroxine hormone causes Myxoedema in adults and cretinism in children, excess of thyroxine levels could lead to exophthalmic goitre, Graves disease or Thyrotoxicosis. Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis is a condition which is more common in women of age group 30 to 50 years. Such individuals show symptoms of irritation, over-anxiety, rapid heart rate, deep shallow respiration, diarrhea, heat intolerance, flushing, menstrual disturbance, fatigue and bulging of eyes. Though all of the said thyroid symptoms may not be present a few of such symptoms could be due to hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition caused due to inactivity of thyroxine. This condition can be caused due todeficiency of iodine or thyroid failure or pituitary dysfunction. Symptoms include fatigue, loss of vitality and overall hormonal imbalance. When hypothyroidism is left untreated for a long time it could result in myxodema which is distinguished by swollen skin and tissues. According to Ayurveda, taking adequate quantities of milk can help in preventing goitre. Also rice, barley, Bengal gram, moong dal and cucumber are recommended for patients suffering from goitre. They should of course avoid heavy and sour foods. Herbs that are found useful in treatment of thyroid disorders include Kanchanara, Jatamansi, Shilajita, Brahmi guggulu, gokshura, and punarnava. As a home remedy, a fine paste of vegetable jalakumbhi can be applied over the affected area and the juice of jalakumbi can be given a few times in a day. This has a high content of iodine, the deficiency of which causes goitre. Coconut oil which contains medium chain fatty acids which help in improving body metabolism, is good for those suffering from thyroid disorders. The medicines used in Ayurveda for treating thyroid disorders include Kanchanar Guggulu, Ashwagandharishta, Amritadhaya taila and Mahayogaraj guggulu. Apart from all this, yogic asanas like Sarvangasana, Halasana, Suryanamaskara, Suptavajrasana are found helpful, though Pranayama is the most effective for curing thyroid problems.

Vallarai herb to maintain youthful vigour and strength

Centella asiatica, also known as Vallarai in South India, belongs to the family of herbs that help in maintaining youthful vigour and strength, reveals Charaka, the foremost exponent of Ayurveda. Apart from providing vigour and strength, it improves the receptive capacity of the mind, improves memory, voice, physical stamina, complexion and digestive capacity of the body. The herb is also advisable for diabetics and people suffering from anaemia. The extracts of the plant are also being used in cosmetology as an ingredient in face creams and anti-wrinkle creams.

Vallarai should however, not be confused with Brahmi, as the former is grown naturally on the banks of ponds, streams, rice fields and even at home without much effort. The leaves of the plant, which is slightly bitter in taste, could be dried and powdered, and a quarter teaspoon of the powder could be taken regularly as a general tonic by adults or could be included while cooking food. Vallarai tonic is also found to improve memory power among children, when given in small proportions by mixing concentrated aqueous extracts with sugar and honey. The tonic does not require any terminal processing, except addition of milk, to a tablespoon of the tonic. Vallarai, being a well-known traditional herb in India, is mainly used as an alternative tonic and diuretic, and with no side effects being found, it is safe for use. Pregnant women should however, consult a physician prior to use.

Combination of herbal extracts found effective in treating Hepatitis B

In a research undertaken by the Chennai Hospital, dialysis performed with a combination of herbs had proven effective in treating a condition of acute Hepatitis B viral infection. The extracts from a combination of herbs, such as tulsi, neem and phyllantus were infused into the patients through the routine procedure of dialysis, and the patients recorded significant drop in viral load. On completion of the dialysis sessions, which lasted for a period of six months, it was found that the Hepatitis B virus was completely eliminated from the body. The research was conducted through a combination of Ayurvedic healing principles with dialysis procedures of modern medicine in an immunologic setting. However, the dosage of herbal medicine for each session of dialysis was determined by an Ayurvedic physician at the hospital.

Dt. Ravichandran, Chief Nephrologist Consultant, St. Thomas Hospital, Chennai, says that, the end result of the three years of research is the successful adoption of reverse osmosis technology which facilitates herbal extracts to pass through the skin barrier and reach bloodstream. The infusion was successful in stimulating T cells to produce natural interferon so that the viral load got reduced. In another pivot case study, a 27-year old patient who suffered from Hepatitis B, with the blood count being as low as 30,000 (instead of 2-4 lakhs), was initially subjected to a Radiation Oncologist for low dose splenic radiation. After his platelet count increased to one lakh, he was subjected to herbal dialysis. After completion of a series of dialysis his viral load dropped from 21 lakhs to 1250 copies, and the haemoglobin level picked up to 13. After two such schedules of herbal dialysis, his blood test turned negative for hepatitis virus. Inspired by the success, few other patients too were treated in a similar manner, and the entire procedure proved to be ten times cheaper than the routine dialysis and medication.

Koankro capable of curing HIV/AIDS ?

It has been confirmed that an herbal medicine Koankro is capable of curing HIV/AIDS. This was revealed during a clinical analysis conducted by the Biochemistry and Biotechnology department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Koankro is an herbal mixture prepared by Mr.Kamara Agyapong, the Director of Peace Herbal Clinic at Ejisu in Ashanthi. Trial tests were conducted on HIV positive patients, who were put on the herbal preparations for two years. The tests that were conducted on completion of two years revealed these patients to be HIV negative for both HIV1 and 2 viruses. The results that were released, revealed that both male patients aged 39 and 35, now have no HIV virus in their blood cells. This negative status of the patients was further confirmed by tests results from KATH (Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital) and Medilab, which is a private laboratory at Kumasi. The team of researchers at KNUST had earlier confirmed the efficacy of the preparation in management of AIDS, and were conducting trials on the potency of Koankro , since then. After three weeks of treatment, the team found considerable improvement in the blood counts, haemoglobin content and the weight of the victims. These results prompted Agyapong to undertake further research, and he came out with sixteen additional preparations, which were administered to these patients at various levels of treatment. Already, about twenty patients are currently undergoing various stages of treatment with Agyapong, who agreed that the good indication of the test results has prompted him to carry on with further research on the treatment of this disease.

Astragalus root extract effective in fighting HIV & boosting immunity

A new study has indicated that a substance in Astragalus root has the potential to contribute further or to replace the current AIDS treatment, namely, theanti-retroviral therapy.

The study conducted by the UCLA AIDS Institute, found that a chemical in the Astragalus root, which is often used in Chinese herbal therapies, fights HIV and reduces the ageing process in other parts of the body. As is the case with all other cells, even the immune cells lose their ability to divide with age, because a part of their chromosome, known as telomere, becomes progressively shorter with cell division. Hence, the cell changes in several ways, and the ability to fight diseases too, gets compromised. With this new study, it has been found that the chemical TAT2 can prevent or slow down the progressive shortening of telomere. An enzyme called telomerase helps rebuild telomere. The Professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Rita Effros, along with her colleagues, extracted killer T-cells from HIV-infected people and exposed them to TAT2, which is a drug extracted from the root of Astralagus plant that helps in boosting telomerase production. Effros noticed that TAT2 reduced telomere shortening, increased the ability of the cells to divide, and also enhanced their antiviral activity. This effect was however hindered when another second drug was used to inhibit telomerase. This has the potential to be either added or even replace the HAART (Highly active anti retroviral therapy) which is often not tolerated well by patients and is costly, Effros concluded. According to Effros, TAT2 could be used to supplement existing anti-retroviral drugs by boosting the immune system of people with HIV.

Kapha Ayurveda Body Type can endure long sits and do complicated mantras or walking meditation is very good for them. Ayurveda Meditation Yoga has traditionally been integral to many cultures and religions around the world, from Roman Catholicism to Jewish mysticism to Tibetan Buddhism. It is as varied as these religions and cultures are themselves, and has many goals, techniques, and effects. Ayurveda Meditation yoga allows mental chatter to quiet and eventually cease, at first for moments and then, with practice, for minutes at a time. During those moments during Ayurveda meditation yoga the consciousness and the body are cleansed and you experience the state of pure being, of oneness with the universetranscendence. Many people find that with regular ayurveda meditation yoga they experience a profound shift in their inner lives. This in turn can also affect physical health. In fact hundreds of meditators have been studied and their physiological processes have been measured. Researchers found that meditation does the following: Ayurveda meditation yoga reduces blood levels of stress hormones, which are associated with poor health and aging

Reduces levels of lactate, a substance related to high levels of anxiety Ayurveda meditation yoga Lowers or normalizes blood pressure and pulse rate Lowers respiration, oxygen consumption, and metabolic rate Lowers abnormally high cholesterol levels Ayurveda meditation yoga Enhances immune system response Increases alpha brain-wave activity, which is present during times of creativity and relaxation May increase concentration, memory, and creativity Ayurveda meditation yoga is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating as indicated by their blood pressure, visual acuity, and hearing. Relaxation and Breathing practices comes in as many forms as there are people on the planet. There are many schools of meditation, and they are all connected to the triad of ayurveda meditation yoga and what they all have in common is that they bring your attention to rhythmic breathing, to an object, or to a word or thought or mantra such as the word om.

Or you focus outward on something, such as a candle, a picture, God, or a space four feet in front of your nose. The process gently draws you inward until you reach your mind's own deepest nature. In ayurveda meditation yoga approach each body type needs a different approach so first know your dosha then plan your approach. Ayurveda Meditation yoga is a different experience for each person, and each session is different as well. The following exercise will help you get a glimpse of what meditation feels like. If you want to know more or explore this practice more deeply, there are many books and tapes devoted to all kinds of relaxation and meditation techniques and excellent teachers in nonsectarian disciplines such as mindfulness and Transcendental Meditation. We encourage you to experiment. Although the study of a meditation system does not necessarily involve adaptation of a religion, there is quite a bit of ritual, faith, and aesthetic variation among the forms. You can get a good feel for whether a particular form is good for you by glancing at the literature, talking to the people involved, or visiting a meeting or ceremony As simple as it sounds, some people cannot simply sit still "and do nothing." So if you're the kind of person who usually buzzes around, doing twelve things at once, don't be surprised if you can't sit quietly or if your mind wanders madly. If you have a flood of thoughts and your mind just won't quiet down, don't worry. Keep with it, and don't be too harsh on yourself if you feel you aren't "doing it." If you sit every day and just quietly let the thoughts pass without trying to stop them, and instead drift back to the mantra, word, or prayer, eventually the brain wave patterns begin to change. Deep physiological rest will occur and you will be meditating. The ayurveda relaxation meditation session itself is the goal; even if you think you're not doing it "right," you'll soon notice that you feel more peaceful and will feel relief from yoursymptoms. This begins deep stages of relaxation that build on each session.

The more you practice, the more adept you'll get and the better you'll feel. Aim to meditate once a day, twice if possible. If you begin the day with ayurveda meditation relaxation practices such as breathing and meditation and end the the day with same. Your body-mind will have a love affair with you. The best times are sunrise and sunset because, according to Maharishi Ayurveda those are the times when both your nostrils are equally active, so you achieve a more complete, balanced meditation. Meditation is a form of focusing in a transcendent state. We bring awareness to our minds to go beyond our minds. The ayurveda relaxation tradition includes different methods for different body types.
