HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Number 1

Julie and I extend our greetings and best

wishes for this year of 1965. We believe our

Lord's words when He tells us that'"all things

work together for good to them that love God,"

As we each one submit our lives to Him and

give Him full control, then we can be assured

our futures will be for good and not evil. Thank you for remembering us in your pray ers and also for the many letters, notes and
cards. The news and best wishes were much

appreciated.

We so much enjoy

hearing from

you and we try to give a personal answer to every message. If you fail to hear from us when you think you should have, just write

As you are well aware our first Christmas

in Brazil was unlike any we had previously known. While we were "dreaming of a white

Christmas",the warm rains steadily continued. (continued on page 2)

CHRISTMAS (Continued)

We enjoyed Christmas Day at the Bill Loft*s

home where most of the missionaries of the

Churches of Christ of central Brazil gathered for a feast. We also had guests as new miss

ionaries, Carol and Barbara Lowe, arrived in Brasilia airport at 5:00 a.m. Only two weeks
earlier the Harry Douglass family arrived.

(We are no longer the new missionaries!)

Christmas here just doesn't seem to be the

"big deal" it is at home. Most of the decor

ations were strictly commercial in nature. I didn't see any homes decorated on the out side at all. In many homes we could see a

our appreciation for God so loving us that He

OUR ACTIVITIES

Our activities at the present are not gla

morous, exciting or even very productive. We are laying the necessary groundwork through
orientation and language study in order to be used of Him in the days to come,

A fellow missionary recently"told me that

before he came to the mission field he used

to get so sick and tired of

reading reports

from new missionaries. The only thing they had to talk about was language study. But af ter his arrival he changed his mind and was strongly hoping his supporters and readers didn^t get tired of hearing of his language
t r i a l s and tribulations.

1*11 try not to bore you with the details but, on the other hand, there*s no use pre tending about our present activities.

March 11 Jennie Lee Titus, missionary in Taguatinga, made a quick trip to Pennsylvania to care for
an urgent personal situation at home. We do trust Jennie Lee can return soon to resimie her work here.

March l8 & 19 were the days of a meeting of most

of the missionaries of Central Brazil. We came to

gether to study and discuss the work of the Holy Spi rit in our lives. We do seek to do as Ephesians 5;l8

admonishes, "...be filled with the Spirit." In the

country of Brazil there is great interest and many teachings concerning the work of the Holy Spirit.
This is probably due mainly to the "Pentecostal chur

ches" which are very strong here.

Pray for all of us as we seek to make plain to the Brazilian people. God's Word

We are thankful to report there were no injuries in an autcanobile accident March l8. Dee, Freddy and Bernadine Douglass were traveling with Julie, Shona

We've found Brazil to be a fine place to live and we also admit that occasionally our thoughts turn to
the States.

April 20 Harry Douglass and I (lynn) accompanied Jerry Holmquist to the small town of Ouro Verde (Green Gold). Jerry started a congregation there in I96I and
now goes out only every few weeks to preach and help out. We went along to learn what we could about ev angelizing in Brazil. It turned out to be an educat ional and inspirational Journey. We were particularly impressed with the amount of time the congregation spends in prayer. Prayer is as important to them as singing and preaching. Tome that seemed like an idea many congregations could adopt. Also we noticed how quiet they were. Most Brazilian congregations are noisy with people constantly going and coming. But this ronarkable congregation of about

Hittin* the Books!

Well now I (Lynn) have been told.

I was teasing our

answered very politely, "A Brazilian; and you?"

Mark had his problems last month. While carrying a

drinking glass to the kitchen he slipped and fell. The

glass broke and several stitches were required to patch
his hand. About the time his hand was healed the doctor

decided his tonsils Just had to come out. He is sched

this he will have already forgotten about it.

Ed Knowles, former missionary in Brazil, is now in Bolivia. Lula and Charlie Knowles and Rita, a Brazil ian girl they've helped rear, will be leaving here

Ssn Luiz is a small dusty town about two hundred miles north of Bra silia on the Belem-Brasilia highway.

Harry Douglass,

(Lynn) accompanied

Dale McAfee when he made one of his regular visits in August. Although Dale lives in Ceres, he ministers to several small congregations throughout that area.

The congregation, though few in nxunber, gave us a warm greeting. They were proud of their new building and were glad that we could see it. It is about ten feet wide and twenty-five feet long. You can get some idea of the type of structure from the picture of Dale
preaching.
After about a two hour ride we arrived at dinner

time. By the time we had finished our dinner at the local diner, about fifteen people had gathered for

Bible School. That was rather a historic meeting, I made ray first public speech which lasted about the same length of time as ray first sermon in English three

minutes, with most of the time spent in pauses I

Later in the afternoon we made several calls in the

Shone end Mark have been keeping clDse "watch on our

benene tree. From the picture you can see vhy. Rec ently the leaves hiding the nev fruit began to open, revealing the tiny green fingers that vill soon become

our favorite variety of bananas. As each bunch opens, it releases a sweet-smelling fragrance that-perfumes the entire yard. Of course along with the sweet fra grance comes the bees to gather the nectar. There has been quite a bit of activity in Brazil
this month. One of the families of the Taguatinga

congregation suffered a great loss when their home and everything in it was destroyed by fire. The man has
been an elder in the congregation for some time.
Their home was one of four destroyed as a result of

an exploding tank of bottle gas. With five children ranging from a few months upward in age, you can see
their need is great.

The congregation has responded well. Today (Sept. 30) many of the women have gathered to sew clothes.
Uoed clothing, food, and money have been collected. The family is staying at the William Loft home until they can arrange for another home. The young people sponsored and conducted a revival meeting at the North End meeting place a week ago. The meeting was somewhat different than the typical revival to which you are^^c^imed"; The building is not large not much larger than two good-sized living rooms, I would guess. One ni^t the musical accompaniment consisted of two electric

guitars, one regular guitar, two accordians, one har

monica and one tambourine. The music was LOUD! The

Brazilians enjoy it that way. There were also six or seven special numbers each ni^t, usually solos. There were many young people in attendance. How ever, several adults were there and a rather gentlelooking dog which slept iinder my feet, seemingly en
joying the revival.

One night, after the invitation period was over and the meeting about to dismiss, a woman stood and stated
that there was a man there who wanted to become a

Christian but was too timid to go forward. With some persuading the man finally went to the front and made the good confession of faith in Christ Jesus.

However, another situation developed as a result of the meeting, which indicates all too vividly the pro blems involved in preaching the Grospel in Brazil.

A woman whom Julie end another girl had recently vis ited, was beaten by her husband because she wanted to become a Christian. She was so upset about it that she tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills which, thankfully, was not successful.
This is not the first situation we have known of sim

ilar to this. Pray for this family that they migiht come to know the Lord as their personal Saviour.

Perhaps you would like to hear of my experience in securing my Brazilian driver's license, l^on arrival I was issued a temporary license which was renewed once. But finally the time came for me to get my
official license.

Without giving much thou^t to the ordeal in which I'd be embarking, I went to the transit department to ask to take the test. While waiting in line I happen ed to glance at a lengthy list of requirements, some of which I didn't understand and still don't, which were required before making application. After slowly easing out of the line I made a copy of the list and left trying to decide the best way to tackle this thing. Later in the day, while getting a haircut, I was still

pondering the situation and mentioned it to the bar ber. He quickly agreed it was no sin5)le matter and
recommended the services of his friend across the st

reet who is a profe^ional^t this sort~of thing. I accepted his suggestion and made arrangements with his friend to help me gather the necessary paperwork.
After several days of running to various offices,

departments and the doctor, I had a nice-size stack of documents, pictures, fingerprints and photocopies of previous documents. We presented these to the transit department and made an appointment to take the test.
Early the next day, at the stated time,I was there ready to take the simple test for which I'd prepared.
But I was rather startled to see a much more difficult

test than the one for which I'd prepared.

After asking the instructor a question

or two and

doing some calculated guessing, I proceeded to do the best I could. Upon checking the scores when they were posted the next day, I learned I had passed the exam, but it was the wrong one! After a lengthy discussion,

followed by an apology, the officials said they wotild

accept the exam since it had been their

mistake in

scheduling the wrong one.

I -was

not presented an official translation of my U.S. lic ense which was a necessity. (?y turning in my U.S. license, I was "saving" a lot of time by not taking the driving part of the test.) I was directed to the U.S. Embassy to get the needed translation. However,
at the Embassy, I was kindly infomed that this serv ice was only performed for U.S. government personnel. I returned to the transit department with my sad story, and they pron^tly wrote a letter and asked me to take the letter back to the Embassy. Of course this was the next day. I'm not sure what the letter said, but af ter some nasty comments, the official at the Embassy
