%
Vol. Number 1, January 1971

During the past few weeks we have visited con gregations at Eden, Hollowtown, Owensville and Williamsburg, Ohio. Each congregation gave us a warm
welcome and demonstrated a real interest in the work

of proclaiming the Good News around the world. We were in Colorado a few days visiting my

(l^n's)

aunt and

uncle in Denver and

brother and

sister-in-law in Colorado Springs. Shona and Mark had a chance to play in the snow. That was a first for Mark. Shona especially enjoyed that trip because

she missed a week of school'. Really she enjoys school here, but she is always afraid she is missing some
thing else.

We have mail back to

been packaging books and magazines to Brazil. Some of them are for our per

sonal use and others for our library in our Christian

Information Center.

If you

have any books in

good condition which

you would like to contribute

please contact us. We will package and mail them if you get them to us. Or if you have books within a

reasonable distance frcm our home we could pick them up. Books with a technical theme, general information
or good literatiire are especially useful.

Letters fran Harry, our co-worker in Uberlandia, indicate that the correspondence course is continuing
to grow and more opportunities come everyday to show

the Moody Science Films.

As many

of you are aware,

we are purchasing our own set of 13 films, full color

in the Portuguese language to take back to Brazil with us. This is an expensive project but one we

believe well

worth the cost.

The films,

shown by folk everywhere, voluntarily asking whether we have enough financial support. We appreciate that attitude. And our response is that our only concern
is inflation. The rate of inflation in Brazil is

about 25^ per year.

That would present no problem

if the exchange rate for the U.S. dollar kept pace. But, that is not the case. Consequently in order to maintain our purchasing power we need to continually have an increase in our support. And thanks be to our supporters and to God our support for the three years showed an increase each year which kept us in
good shape.
Someone asked how long that situation would con

tinue and we replied that we have no idea. But believe that God is able to supply our needs. knows and His servants will respond.

pay rent, operate an automobile, purchase eq\iipment, etc. Our personal salary is detemined by the Elders of the congregation at Bri^t Christian Church. They

As we mentioned previously, if you would like a copy of our financial report for 1970 write to Russell Hall'our forwarding agent and he will "be most happy
to send one.

We have never made it a policy to continually ak for money either in our personal presentations or throu^ the Cahle. We believe that you understand that it requires funds to operate. We try to plan the use of our funds in such a way as to not have to continually request funds for special projects, etc.

Valderaar and Maria Ribeiro Filho were our guests the last week of January. Valdemar, who is an assist ant professor at the College of Philosophy in Ifl^er-

landia, and Maria were married December 26.

Their

honeymoon included stops in Portugal,Italy, Switzer land, France, England, and the United States.
Valdemar was one of the first persons with "whom

we became acquainted after our move to Uberlandia. It was a genuine pleasure to have them with us.

It was good to get back after an enjoyable and very refreshing furlough. While we did not particu larly catch up on any physical rest we feel so much better after a short break from the language and the struggles of proclaiming Christ in our fair city.
A sincere thanks is in order for all who contri buted to make our four months in the states such a

blessing. Especially we want to say thanks to Miss Alta Lumbard for the use of her typewriter, Russell Lieb and Larry Pierson for taking care of many local arrangements arid details, andtD the many good friends

There are always decisions.

In Cincinnati we de

bated before boarding our flight to New York whether

or not to take our coats. We knew we would be in New York for six or seven hours and that i t was cold

there.

We also knew that when we got back to Brazil

there would be no use for them.

So we left our coats with our parents at the air

port in Cincinnati. Little did we realize that the

Pan American terminal in New York had gone Brazilian! Somewhere or other in the place a huge chunk of glass had been broken and evidently no one was very con cerned about repairing it. So we had a chilly wait in New York. However the 707 to Brasilia was lightly loaded allowing each one of us three full seats in
which to stretch out.

After an uneventful

fli^t we landed in Brasilia

about seven-thirty local time Tuesday morning March 9 We were happily surprised to be waved throu^ cust oms without having to open our baggage and to find
out that our air frei^t had been unloaded from the same plane from which we had just departed.

Tuesday

afternoon we

received our

freight from

customs without any trouble.

However they kept the

set of films "Sermons from Science" to be censured. That should not present any problem and frankly we hope the officials view each one in detail. They are powerful evangelistic tools.
Wednesday morning, March 10, Charles Kent brought us the remaining 300 miles to our home in Uberlandia. We were again pleased to see that the woman we had hired to look after our home had done a perfect job. Everything was clean and awaiting our arrival.

Hejoice with us that God answers prayer. Give Him thanks for guiding us as He watches over all His
flock.

J. Lynn Cleavel^nd taraily working in Uberlandia, Brazil

VOL 5, mJMBER 6, JUNE 1971

Tragedy has recently struck some of our missionary family as well as personal friends here in Uberlandia. Dale and Huey Mason were quite thrilled with the "birth of their third child and only boy a little over
a year ago. There were complications at the time of

Scot's

birth because of Huey*s

blood type.

And

at

that time Dale was workingip on the Amazon River west of Belem. However Scot arrived healthy and a blessing to his proud parents. April 22 Scot died after a week of intensive hospital care - encephalitis. He was buried in Belem where his parents continue to witness
to the love of our Lord and Savior.

The Norman Maddux family who lived and worked in Belem had to return to the States recently due to a

sustained fever

that Patty

could not

overcome.

All

tests there failed to locate the reason for the seven month fever. We have not heard from them since their
return to the States.

Jerry and

Becky Hall lived in Taguatinga

Brazil. Later they

time we arrived in

moved to Belo

Horizonte where Jerry was

involved in an agricultural

project in an attempt to win a hearing for the gospel of Christ. They returned to Arkansas for their first furlough in September 1970* T^/hile in the States they were divorced. Jerry and his three boys (Becky has the

baby girl) returned to Brazil and are living in a city

about one himdred miles west of us.

Many of you met Valdemar, whose picture was in a recent Cable. His brother, a medical student in Rio, was seriously injured about three weeks ago on an auto mobile accident. His spleen andoie kidney was removed.
Latest indications are that he will recover.

Perrine and Carlota Smith are a young Brazilian couple who moved to our city over a year ago. Perrine is a professor in the Department of Engineering at the Itoiversity and Carlota, a dentist, was just getting established. On a recent trip to Belo Horizonte they
were involved in an automobile accident from which broken

Those whodD not accept the claims of Jesus Christ

upon their lives are quick to ridicule our Lord, when trouble, especially pain and suffering strike the fol

not will such tragedies, they are a necessary consequ

ence of our independent moral nature. And that He can turn despair into victory and a witness to our

faith. Those who see not spiritual pigmies have learned that spiritual growth is continual and often only comes
as a result of real trials and difficult situations.

much we depend upon the Lord to show us where to di rect our efforts and utilize our energies! Please continue iD pray for His blessing and that our feeble efforts will result in a good harvest.

Last Sunday afternoon I conducted a worship ser vice for a small group of people who live near the
Agricultural college about 12 miles from Uberlandia.

We had made contact with them by means of our corre

spondence course. Some ofthe folks are Presbyterian, others Baptist and others who have never accepted Christ as their personal Savior. We were able to sign up several of the folks in our correspondence course.
Next Sunday we have an invitation to share with

a small group who meet in the industrial city,a poor suburb north of here. Several of them are doing the
correspondence-course.

At this writing we are awaiting final permission

from Moody Science Institute to use their films on

local TV.

We are happy to report that final arrangements were completed and Sermons from Science, the series of thirteen films produced by the Moody Institute of Science, are currently being viewed on local TV sta
tion 8.

The final problem involved Moody*s requirements in regard to commercial advertising with the films. They wanted a written statement that no commercials featuring alcoholic beverages or tobacco would be
shown in connection with the films. The first reac

tion of the

director of TV 8 was that he

would only

give a verbal agreement but that a written statement could not be given. Finally after communicating with Moody I approached the director one more time seeking the necessary statement. Thankfully he agreed to fur
nish the guarantee in written form.

The series began Saturday,October 2 and will run weekly through the last Saturday in December. A poten

tial viewing audience of over one million are reached

We realize that the films, radio and correspond ence courses do not represent ends in themselves. They are only a means, very good ones, for sowing the good seed. We are thankful for the opportunities to u&e these methods of mass communication. Our only regret
is that our own technical abilities in these fields

are so limited. Pray that we might continue to take advantage of every opportunity that the Lord opens to us to preach Jesus.
