Theguidelineshereapplytobothhardcopycorrespondenceandemail. (Todecidewhichtouse,see emailinyourjobsearch.) Main differencesbetweenemailandhardcopycorrespondence: Format:your signatureblock(address,etc.)goesbelowyournameinemail,whileitgoesatthetop ofthepageonhardcopy. Emailrequiresa subjectlinelogicaltotherecipient.Emailsubjectlinescanmakeorbreakwhether youremailisopenedandread.Hardcopycanhaveasubjectlinetoo,butit'sontheletter(after recipient'saddressblockandbefore"Dear...,"andit'sseenaftertheletterisopened. Signature:Ofcourseyouwon'thaveahandwrittensignatureonemail,butdon'tforgetthisonhard copy.

Allcoverlettersshould:
Explainwhyyouaresendingaresume. Don'tsendaresumewithoutacoverletter. Don'tmakethereaderguesswhatyouareaskingforbespecific:Doyouwantasummerinternship opportunity,orapermanentpositionatgraduationareyouinquiringaboutfutureemployment possibilities? Tellspecificallyhowyoulearnedaboutthepositionortheorganizationaflyerpostedinyour department,awebsite,afamilyfriendwhoworksattheorganization.Itisappropriatetomentionthe nameofsomeonewhosuggestedthatyouwrite. Convincethereadertolookatyourresume. Thecoverletterwillbeseenfirst. Therefore,itmustbeverywellwrittenandtargetedtothatemployer. Pagemargins,fontstyleandsize
Forhardcopy,leftandrightpagemarginsofoneto1.5inchesgenerallylookgood.Youcanadjust yourmarginstobalancehowyourdocumentlooksonthepage. Useafontstylethatissimple,clearandcommonplace,suchas TimesNewRoman,ArialorCalibri. FontSIZESfrom1012pointsaregenerallyintheballparkoflookingappropriate.Keepinmindthat differentfontstylesinthesamepointsizearenotthesamesize!A12pointArialislargerthana 12pointTimesNewRoman. Ifyouarehavingtroublefittingadocumentononepage,sometimesaslightmarginand/orfont adjustmentcanbethesolution.
