Objectives :

 The primary mission of Assistive Technology Lab is to ensure that students, employees, and the general public with disabilities have appropriate technologies needed to access services offered by the Institute. To facilitate the students to work on genuine projects with intra and inter disciplinary knowledge in order to serve the society. To encourage students to show case their talent in global arena by participating in competitions like RESNA, NASA Create the Future Design Contest, Intel Cornell Cup, Texas Instruments Analog Design Contest, ITsAP etc., which will also extend their range of knowledge. Goals : To create a Center of Excellence to faciltiate Masters and PhD works which are interdisciplinary Make commercially successful products which can be either improvement in existing technology or a low cost device. In this process several projects can be gaurded with IPRs and patents. Genesis : The Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) is established on August 6 th 2009 in collaboration with University of Massachusetts, Lowell to utilize the skills of every engineering department for a very unique and noble cause of designing projects by the students of BVRIT to benefit the differently-abled and also for the development of Assistive Technology. The foundation stone for Innovation Park is laid by Padmavibhushan Prof. C. R. Rao on March 17th 2010.ATL gained its physical structure at Innovation Park on July 29 th 2011 which is inaugurated by Prof Alan Rux and team from University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA. ATL was setup in a very peaceful and ambient atmosphere of Innovation Park equipped with high end personal computers with Internet connectivity and sophisticated electronic components.

ABOUT ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LAB

The Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) in Padmasri Dr. B. V. Raju Institute of Technology (BVRIT), Narsapur, Medak dist, Andhra Pradesh which is in collaboration with UMass, Lowell is a part of Sri Vishnu Educational Society and is a vision of Mr. K. V. Vishnu Raju, the Chairman of BVRIT, to utilize the skills of every engineering department of the college for the development of Assistive Technology. During his visit to many universities in the United States, one thing that ignited his mind was the Assistive Technology Program at University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Assistive Technology Lab in BVRIT is thus a result of his progressive thinking, which paved the way for a MOU between the University of Massachusetts and BVRIT. He initiated the program by inviting Professor Alan Rux, founder of the Assistive Technology Program at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA to BVRIT. The Chairman of SVES found a suitable person our then Principal (BVRIT), Col.T.S.Surendra, to coordinate Prof.Rux's program in India at both our

Engineering Colleges (at Narsapur and Bhimavaram). Prof.Rux conducted a workshop on "Assistive Technology" from 6 - 21 August, 2009. Assistive Technology Lab works for a very unique and a noble cause of designing projects by the students of BVRIT to benefit the differently-abled. This is a small but definite step to mainstream people with disabilities into society. Assistive Technology Lab at BVRIT is setup in a very peaceful and ambient atmosphere with high end personal computers with Internet connectivity and sophisticated electronic components like CRO, RPS, micro-controllers and also imported electronic components that are unavailable in India, thus ensuring high productivity. According to Prof. Alan Rux, engineering students all over the world should be encouraged to undertake various projects in the field of Assistive Technology and make its impact felt.

17. Students of Electronic Knee Braces project were selected for Idea Summer Carnival Internship at BITS Hyderabad. This is a 6-week internship program which offers training on how to develop a project into a commercial product.

BENEFIT TO FACULTY

She got an opportunity to visit Purdue University to know about EPICS course. Faculty publications info to be included ATL AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS ITsAP(The IT & ITES Industry Association of A.P.) recognizes the best Software Services Companies, Software products and (student) Entrepreneurship at its Annual Awards & Software Products Showcase & Conference.

The following students won the Student Entrepreneurship Award in the 2009 edition of the Conference held on 12th march 2010 at HICC, Madhapur, Hyderabad for their product Smart Stick developed for the visually impaired. a. Mr. Y.Mahesh - ECE - BME 24

The above team were also invited to present their prototype at the IIT Delhi Tech Fest Project Expo ( Anusandhan) in March 2010. They won accolades and their efforts were recognized.ITsAP Young Entrepreneur Award 2010 for a project titled Smart Stick Second Prize at TI Analog Design Contest 2010 for a project titled Quadriplegic Tilt Communicator with Monitoring System Secured 11th position at NASA Create the Future Design Contest 2010 organized by COMSOL and TechBreifs for a project titled Mind Mouse. Eleven teams from ATL were certified as Microsoft Student Partners in 2010 Imagine Cup 2010 : 3 teams of BVRIT got selected to the second round (Semifinals) as detailed below. Students participated from more than 100 countries. a. Smartstick Harshapriya - BME & Y.Mahesh ECE. b. Home automation - Raghuveer ECE c. Voice automated wheel chair Harsh EEE.

Note : BVRIT hosted the Dream Spark Yatra under the aegis of Microsoft in March 2011. 1000 students from all over the State participated. Mr. Shyam Kumar (III CSE) has been selected as a Microsoft Student Partner (MSP). NASA Create the Future Design contest 2010: This is an online international contest. The 2010 Create the Future Design Contest sponsored by COMSOL Inc., PTC & Tech Briefs Media Group ( Publishers of NASA Tech Briefs) recognizes innovation in Product Design in 6 categories viz. Consumer Products, Machinery & Equipment, Medical, Safety & Security, Sustainable Technologies & Transportation. The following students participated :

a. Pragya Jayakumar BME & Ramya BME for mind mouse. b. Prithvi - Patient Monitoring System c. Pragya & Ramya finished in the eleventh position the World Over in the Medical Category. 24

JNTUH Tech Fest 2010: Prithvi ECE got the first prize for his Patient Monitoring System.

International Conference BEATS ( Biomedical Engineering & Assistive Technologies): It was held at NIT Jalandhar in December 2010. Two papers submitted by our students got selected by an International Review Committee and were published in the Conference Proceedings. Details of the paper published and presented are :

Texas Instruments Analog Design contest 2010 : Texas Instruments India conducts TI Analog Design Contest annually to encourage System level design projects using TIs broad range of high performance analog integrated circuits. In the first round, they select 20 teams from the all the entries from India and award a cash prize of $1500 to each team. These top twenty teams will compete in the final round to win the Engibous Prize for their innovation. The first prize amount of $10,000, the Second prize amount of $7500 and third prize amount of $5000 will be awarded to the final winners.

Three teams from BVRIT have participated in the TI Analog Design contest 2010. The teams are : 1. Nitin Menon & Akhila III BME Quadriplegic tilt control monitoring systems, where the tilt of the head actuates the wheel chair, the direction of movement of the chair being dependent on the direction of tilt 2. Anwesha & Gopi Krishna & Ahok Naidu Speech and Touch based smart home infrastructure for physically challenged. 3. Bhargava & Manisha Multi purpose voice activated alarm system. 4. Nitin Menon & Akhila won a prize amount of $1500 in the first round and US $3750 in the final round. They were adjudged the first runner up jointly with Amrita school of Engineering, Coimbatore for their innovative product. 24

A News release from TI says: BANGALORE, INDIA: IIT Madras and Kalasalingam University, Tamil Nadu jointly won the Texas Instruments Analog Design Contest for Indian Universities for the year 2010. The students from IIT Madras and Kalasalingam University won a prize of US$ 5,000 each and lifted the Tom Engibous Shield for their entries Low Cost Integrated Wireless Health Monitoring System With Emergency Response and Electronic Toll Collection with Short Messaging Service respectively, said a press release. The teams from IIT Madras and Kalasalingam University also won a prize of US$ 5,000 each for their entries. Undergraduate students from engineering colleges across the country participated in the TI Analog Design Contest. The teams from Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore and Padmasri Dr. B.V.Raju Institute Of Technology, Hyderabad, jointly won the First Runners-up trophy and a prize amount of US$ 3,750 each, the release added. I feel very excited to be a part of this celebration of Innovation. The budding engineers showcased remarkable grit and talent, even though it was their first deep dive into real engineering design and prototyping, said Ashok Hattangady, industrialist in the space of Energy Efficiency and Technology Adviser. Imagine Cup 2011 : The theme of the Contest is Imagine a World where technology helps solve the toughest problems. This global competition is conducted annually by Microsoft to address the Millennium Development Goals laid down by the UN. Over 600 teams registered for the competition from all over the world out of which 147 teams qualified for the second round (semifinals) . 28 teams were shortlisted from India and 3 of these are from BVRIT. The projects selected include:

Sixteen papers were presented at BEATS 2012, International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Assistive Technologies. Among them Assist + received Best Technical Session Paper Award. ITsAP Best Software Product Award 2012 for a project titled Assist + ITsAP Student Innovation Category Award 2012 for a project titled Patient Care Consolation prize at Mechanica 2012 - IIT Madras for a project titled Electric Vehicle Secured 15th position at NASA Create the Future Design Contest 2012 organized by COMSOL and TechBreifs for a project titled Automatic Pneumatic Screw Gun. Electronic Knee Braces project won Second Prize at SRAJAN 2013, IEEE Student Branch Event at MANIT, Bhopal Biobot project was selected as one of the top 30 finalists for Intel Cornell Cup conducted during May 3rd 4th 2013 at Walt Disney, Orlando, USA. This project won Peoples Choice Award worth 1000 USD at Intel Cornell Cup.

Resource persons from Blaze Automation delivering classes to students during ATL Mini course International Day for people with Disabilities was observed at ATL-BVRIT on Dec 3rd 2012. Chairman SVES Sri K V Vishnu Raju garu and all Governing Body members graced the occasion and distributed Wheel Chairs , E-sticks and Talking Boxes to clients from nearby villages.
