Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809.

Both parents died in 1811, and Poe became an orphan before he was 3 years old He was taken in by the Allens but never formally adopted. He attended the University of Virginia and studied Latin and poetry for one year, but dropped out and ran up massive gambling debts after spending all of his tuition money. His stepfather, John Allan broke off Poe's engagement to his fiance Sarah Royster. Poe was heartbroken, traumatized, and broke. He joined the US Military, but requested to be discharged. Both his mother and his wife (who wasnt even 13) died of Tuberculosis. Surrounded by horrible events he felt that writing was the one way he could express his feelings . His life was characterized by professional and personal turmoil. Ultimately, these events drove him to drug consumption and alcoholism which led to his death. It's most likely that Edgar Allan Poe wrote that way because of the life he had. This events as hard as they were, became his inspiration to write poems and short stories leading him to become one of the best authors in American literature. Unconsciously, sometimes writers/poets may express what's happening in their lives onto paper.

While he pioneered the depiction of horror and madness, he is considered the father of modern detective story in which heightened powers of reason and deduction solve bewildering mysteries. Poe wrote the first modern detective fiction in his three stories: The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Mystery of Marie Roget", and "The Purloined Letter." He is credited with the creation of that genre of

fiction and is referred to as The Father of Detective Fiction. His influence can be seen in modern crime and detective stories. Poes psychologically thrilling tales examining the depths of the human psyche earned him much fame during his lifetime and after his death. His unique ability to write suspense could leave the readers intrigued until the very end. His works influenced literature in the United States as well as all over the World

Edgar Allan Poes work has earned him an enviable place in American literature. He is not only a pioneer of the short story, hes Americas first major horror writer as well as the father of the detective story. His work "The Murder in the Rue Morgue" is probably the first detective story ever published and its influence can be felt even in modern day crime novels and police procedurals. His work has strong visual and narrative elements that inspire artists and thinkers. Film, radio and television adaptations of his stories and poems have been popular throughout the twentieth century. Poe in his tales has the ability to hold the reader in suspense until the very last sentence. His poetry also exhibits an astounding popularity. The RAVEN IS PERHAPS THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE poem in the English language, its haunting sing-song rhythm and unforgettable imagery appeals to people of all ages
