UNIT 5 Time to read

Read the following passage about hearts carefully. Look up any new words in a dictionary. Your heart is really a muscle. Its located a little to the left of the middle of your chest, and its about the size of your fist. There are lots of muscles all over your body: in your arms, in your legs, in your back, even in your behind. But this muscle is special because of what it does; the heart sends blood around your body. Blood provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs. It also carries away the waste that your body has to get rid of. Your heart is sort of like a pump or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite. It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body. By the time youre grown up, your heart will be beating (pumping) about 70 times a minute. How does the heart beat? Before each beat, your heart fills with blood. Then it contracts to squirt the blood along. When something contracts, it squeezes tighter. Try squeezing your hand into a fist. Thats sort of like what your heart does so it can squirt out the blood. Your heart does this all day and all night, all the time. Every day an adult heart pumps 2,000 gallons (7,500 liters) of recycled blood by filling and contracting. The heart is one tough worker!

Read the following article about adequate exercises carefully. Look up any new words in a dictionary. Exercise is necessary for good health, but there are an increasing number of people who overdo it and suffer from related injuries. Older people are particularly vulnerable. Just as in eating, moderation is the key in exercising. It is important not to ignore the early sign of distress while exercising and know when to stop. The concept of no pain no gain is misleading and creates more problems than good. Exercising with a machine is unnatural and potentially more harmful if not under close supervision. Doing exercise outdoors is healthier. It benefits the lungs and gives the body a good supply of oxygen. Hiking, cycling, brisk walking and jogging are all good outdoor exercises. They are good for us both physically and mentally. The fresh air, the sun, the smell of the earth, flowers and trees, the sound of nature and the birds and bees are all very relaxing and calming. Chinese exercise involves both the mind and body. Yoga, tai chi and qi-gong emphasize mindlessness, calmness, relaxation and concentration. Their movements are slow, but require both the body and mind to join together. People who practice these exercises on a regular basis control the energy flow within their bodies, promote self-healing and rejuvenation. They retard aging, improve alertness and allow the practitioner to handle stress better. Adequate exercise is healthy, over doing it will result in health problems and injuries.

What for?
Like other muscles, the heart enjoys a good workout. You can provide it with one in the form of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is any type of exercise that gets the heart pumping and quickens your breathing.

The Brazilian soccer stars real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Pele was the youngest player ever to win a World Cup medal when Brazil won the 1958 World Cup. Pele scored 2 goals in the final at the age of 17, an achievement that is unlikely to be matched ever again in World Cup history. Pele was brought up in a poor part of Brazil and was guided by his father, who was also a professional soccer player. His father once scored five headed goals in one match! Pele played for Santos of Brazil and was part of the winning 1962 and 1963 Inter Continental Championship squads (World Club Championship). However, the 1970 World Cup in Mexico will always be a special memory for Pele fans as he led Brazil to an amazing victory. The famous Pele video clips are still seen today, as he sold the goalkeeper his famous dummy and also scored with a brilliant header in the final against Italy. Pele later went on to confirm that this was a special goal as it was also Brazils 100th World Cup goal. Pele retired from international soccer but made a comeback to sign a money spinning contract with the New York Cosmos in the American Soccer League. Pele was part of the 1977 championship team, and average crowds increased by over 80% in the few years that he graced the American soccer scene.

UNIT 5 Time to read

Read the following passage from Little changes make good habits easier carefully. Look up any new words in a dictionary. Here are five ways to help you make better food and exercise habits:
1. Identify the changes you want to make and make

a daily reminder. This reminder can be a sign on the bathroom mirror. The sign can be as simple as, Have you eaten your fruit today? or a picture of a piece of fruit.

2. Make realistic and slow changes.

To prevent breaking your resolutions, work on changing one habit at a time. If you are used to eating a large dessert every night, eliminating the dessert completely will likely produce cravings. However, if you gradually decrease the size of your dessert portion, you will hardly notice the change. Try to replace bad habits with good ones. It is often easier to replace a bad habit with a good habit than it is to simply eliminate the bad habit. Instead of eating a cookie, eat a cold, crunchy, sweet apple. Instead of drinking a soda, drink a glass of fruit juice.
3. 4.

Activity

Decide whether the following statements are true or false.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Make sure that new-habit rewards are good for you. Eating a candy bar after exercise may seem like a good reward, but if you stop exercising you may still crave the candy bar. Therefore, make sure the rewards you choose wont turn into bad habits later.

Make exercise a social event. Exercising with someone almost always seems easier than doing it alone. Try to use your time wisely by doing two good things at once. You are more likely to exercise frequently when its combined with a chance to talk with a friend. Of course, everyones excuse is Im too busy to exercise or Im too busy to prepare a good meal. Not taking enough time to develop even small healthy habits sends mixed messages to your children and yourself. Setting health as a priority now is always a good decision.
5.

The first step is to identify the changes you want to make and produce a daily reminder. Dont make realistic and slow changes. Try to replace bad habits with good ones. Make sure that new habit rewards are good for you. Dont make exercise a social event.

Hands on! 5E
For the last part of the project, you will have to keep track of your personal eating and hygienic habits. That is, the good habits you have and which ones you have to create or eliminate to improve your mental and physical condition. See page 233 and do Activity 11 as a guide.

Glossary: Reminder: is used to make you remember something. Breaking: to stop doing something. Crave: to have hunger temptations.

Reward: compensation or incentive. Turn into: to become. Wisely: intelligently. Enough: sufficient.

OVERCOMING BAD HABITS

There is a worldwide reason why bad habits are so difficult to overcome. It is that they are on a deeper level. That is, we always gain a sense of emotional satisfaction from doing bad habits. It gives us a pleasant feeling each time we continue the habit. This positive reinforcement that goes on makes it difficult to break the habit. If its smoking, the reinforcement might be a sense of relaxation. If its chewing on a pen, the reinforcement might be a sense of comfort. If its gambling, the reinforcement might be a sense of achievement for winning money and relaxation at the same time. But after the reinforcement comes theguilt that the habit is bad.

Hands on!
My exercise plan!
Purpose
With this project you will be able to make a complete plan of how to create and organize a complete exercise and diet plan to improve your mental and physical health. You will have to keep track of the different aspects related to planning your fitness and health plan so that at the end of the unit you can complete the project.

Theory and practice

The different phases of the unit 5 project (from Hands on! 5A to Hands on! 5E) gave you ideas on how to plan and carry out a complete exercise plan properly. With the different project phases, you should have kept track of key elements or concepts to have a clear picture of what a complete exercising plan is like.

Development
You should have noticed that when answering different activities, you were gaining or obtaining the basic concepts or aspects related to planning a personal fitness program. Review the activities which gave you some good hints to have an idea on which aspects to take into consideration in your project profile. These activities provided you with some good background, and with this you will be able to perform or do your project efficiently.

Wrap up
You can include aspects such as a special diet, daily routine, good habits, medical examination, kinds of exercises and sports, food you eat, or more. You can ask other people or institutions that are experts in planning and organizing personal fitness programs in El Salvador to help you out. Look at the following website: http://www.mercola.com/nutritionplan/exercise_table.htm
