Rasi Tulya Navamsa
Similar to the technique of Navamsa Tulya Rasi, in which the Rasi is juxtaposed over the Navamsa, there is yet another technique in which the Navamsa is Juxtaposed over the Navamsa which goes by the name of Rasi Tulya Navamsa. The Rasi Tulya Navamsa technique is widely used in the Nadi Literature and can be used for normal natal chart analysis as well as timing events with Transits. The concept is that you can project the Navamsa on the Rasi chart and read the results therefrom. For example take my chart. Rasi Lagna - Sagittarius Sun in Rasi - Leo Sun in Navamsa - Gemini While the usual way we see the impact of Sun on our life is through its placement in the rasi chart, we can also see by projecting the Sun's navamsa position on the rasi chart, which in this case comes to the 7th house and hence would influence my seventh house affairs. To differenciate between the rasi and navamsa placement, maharishis have suggested different terms for the projected placements. They are as follows: 1. Lagnamsa 2. Dhanamsa 3. Vikramamsa 4. Sukhamsa 5. Putramsa 6. Ariamsa 7. Kalatramsa 8. Nidhanamsa 9. Dharmamsa 10. Karmamsa 11. Labhamsa 12. Vyayamsa In my horoscope the placement of the planets in the navamsa and the rasi tulya navamsa are as follows: 1. Sun - Gemini - Kalatramsa 2. Moon - Scorpio - Vyayamsa 3. Mars - Scorpio - Vyayamsa 4. Mercury - Leo - Dharmamsa 5. Jupiter - Aries - Putramsa 6. Venus - Sagittarius - Lagnamsa 7. Saturn - Aries - Putramsa 8. Rahu - Capricorn - Dhanamsa 9. Ketu - Taurus - Nidhanamsa (To be Continued)

64th Navamsa & Cuspal Transit

64th Navamsa as well as 22nd Drekkana is given utmost importance in dilineating evils on a native. A small note on this issue is presented in this article. ****** If the Lagna falls in the first navamsa then the 63rd navamsa would be the last navamsa of the 7th house and the 64th navamsa would be the 1st navamsa of the 8th house. Thus whichever navamsa lagna is in, the same navamsa of the 8th sign from the Lagna becomes the 64th navamsa. However, if you take the equal house system only, then you can say that the navamsa of the cusp of the 8th house falls in the 64th Navamsa. ****** In my chart, the lagna is in Sagittarius rasi in the 3rd Navamsa i.e., Gemini. For the sagittarius rasi, the navamsa starts from Aries, since Sagittarius is a dual sign and for all dual signs, the Navamsa starts from the 5th from it. Lagna being in the 3rd Navamsa shall fall in Gemini in the Navamsa Chart. Now the 8th house from Sagittarius is Cancer and the 3rd Navamsa of Cancer should be Virgo. Hence Virgo becomes the 64th navamsa. In all cases it would fall in the 4th from Navamsa Lagna. However, as of my knowledge, the 64th Navamsa from Moon is more potent to trouble than that of the Lagna. You can check it out yourself. In my cases, Moon is in Scorpio Navamsa and 4th wherefrom becomes the 64th Navamsa. Thus Aquarius happens to be the 64th navamsa from Moon and Saturn's transit on that sign in the rasi chart was really troublesome. ****** Here we are talking on nothing but the Transit on the house cusps (in Rasi) in the divisional chart, whic in this case happens to be the Navamsa. Thus to find out the exact time Saturn Transits over the 64th Navamsa, it is important to know the 8th house cusp, which happens to be the same as the Lagna longitude in equal house system. The cusps play a very important role in the horoscope analysis and without understanding them the extent on the planetary effect on us is incomplete. It is a known fact that if a planet is near a cusp in a house, the effect of that planet on the house is maximum and if far, the effect is proportionately reduced. This is true with Transits also. While I talk of the cusp, as per Sanjayji's teaching I am talking of equal house system, where the cusp of all the houses equals that of the Lagna's longitude but falling in their respective houses. Thus for me if the Lagna is in 9d 30m Sagittarius, then the cusp of all houses would have the same longitude. The way you find the placement of different planets in different divisions, you can find the placement of the cusps in different divisions too. To do this count the required division of Lagna, then count as many division of the house under consideration to find the division where the house cusp shall fall. For example, my Lagna is in 3rd navamsa, the cusp of 2nd house would be 3rd navamsa of Capricorn which is Pisces and that of 3rd house is 3rd from Aquarius, which is Sagittarius and so. The effect of planets in different areas of one's life can be seen from the transit of planets on different cusps of houses in different divisional charts pertaining to the area of life under consideration. This is an area which does require considerable research to come up with a consistent framework.

Navamsa Tulya Rasi

Transit is a very wide topics and many classical texts have given many clues on the interpretation of Transits in both Rasi and divisionals. Here is one article written on "13 Feb 2005", based on a discussion on a forum, showing Juxtaposition of the Transit Rasi Chart on the Natal Navamsa and reading Results therefrom. Some verses from Deva Keralam talks on the Transit of various planets in the rasi chart while considering the planets in the same rasi in the Navamsa Chart. This principle of reckoning Rasi in the Navamsa chart is called the Navamsa Tulya Rasi. It is known in the SJC tradition that if a planet is transiting the Rasi Chart in a sign, it will influence that particular sign in all divisional chart. For example, now Saturn is Transiting Gemini, which means that it will influence Gemini in all divisional charts. Somebody who has Moon in Gemini or Taurus or Cancer in Dasamsa would face the effect of Sade sati in the area of work. For example take the case of one of friend, Hari, whose dasamsa Moon is in Taurus and the past few years of Saturn Transits in Taurus, Gemini and Cancer has been too harsh for him professionally. Navamsa being one of the most important divisional chart controlling one's destiny, we need to see various results by projecting the rasi transits on the Navamsa. The author of Deva Keralam says that Saturn's Transit in the sign identical with the Navamsa occupied by the "lord of the 8th" from a given bhava or a "trine thereof" on the degree the said planet will destroy the good effect due to that bhava. Now for example, Saturn is transiting Gemini. In my Gemini Navamsa, Sun is placed. Sun happens to be the 9th lord in my Rasi chart and hence it is the 8th lord from the 2nd house of family and wealth. Thus Saturn's transit in Gemini would adversely affect my 2nd house, which it did... all money spent.. no savings... In Hari's case, Gemini Navamsa has Venus. Venus is the 7th and 12th lord. Thus it is the 8th lord from 12th and 5th house. 12th house is the house of expenses and 5th house is the house of inner harmony... The trouble Hari passed through this time, we all know. Lets see what happened when Saturn Transited Aries. In my Aries Navamsa, Jupiter and Deb Saturn is placed. Jupiter is my Lagna and the 4th lord. So it becomes the 8th lord from 9th house and 6th house. It was in that position during April 17th, 1998 onwards. This is the time, when my work (6th) started troubling me the most and I had to leave it in August... Things started falling apart... Then I took some two months break from the job and started preparting for my MBA entrance examination, which I eventually got through. 9th house is also the house of luck and fortune... and it was pretty bad for me during that time. If my father was alive, it would have troubled him the most being on the 8th lord from the 9th. Now it exactly transited my Jupiter's degree 20d 51m on March 25, 2000. It made me financially too tight... just survived the phase somehow... just think... doing masters with no money in the pocket to sustain onself... However after that period... things started improving... and I got some award in a competition, which compensated the condition ******* In addition to the Lord of the 8th of the Bhava under consideration, we can take the naisargika karaka of the Bhava. For example, while judging the 9th house for father, we can take Sun also in addition to 4th house (8th from 9th house), for judging his health related issues. While I checked this principle to verify on my own chart I found that on 17th of Feb 1994, when my father passed away for his heavenly abode, Saturn was Transiting Aquarius on 8deg 31 min, which is 9th sign from my Natal Navamsa Sun sign, Gemini and very near to its degree, that is 8deg 17min. ******* While checking the consistency of the principles mentioned here in other horoscopes, I found the following things. If my father's death is shown in my horoscope, it should also show up in my brother's horoscope too... However, while I started analysing that, I faced the troubles that the principles could not be applied without any modification. Lets take those cases.

Elder Brother ----------------------Date: May 13, 1973 Time: 11:45:56 am Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT) Place: 74 E 57' 00", 30 N 12' 00" Bhatinda, India While my father died, Saturn was in Aquarius sign with longitude of 8d 31m. This means that there must be some negetive (for father) planet in Aquarius Navamsa or trine to it. While checking these signs I found they are Jupiter in Gemini and Rahu in Virgo. Now Jupiter is the 9th lord in the rasi chart and placed in Capricorn ruled by Saturn. However, there is no connection of the 4th lord (4th is 8th from 9th). Who happened to be Venus with the trines to Saturn's Transit. However Saturn was Transiting near to Venus's natal degree 7/37. *******

Pataki Chakra
Though pataki chakra is one of the hallmark of jyotisha shastra in judging ill health and arishtas, it is not given the due attention by many practitioners. However, the astrologers from the eastern parts of India relied on this quite heavily for Judging Balarishta. 1. Construction Draw three verticals and three horizontal lines. There would be 12 ends of lines each of them shall be assigned to 12 signs from Aries to Pisces. Movable signs shall have vedha from and cause vedha to the dual signs excluding the one in the 3rd from it; Fixed signs shall have vedha among other fixed signs; whereas the Dual signs shall have vedha from and cause vedha to all movable signs excluding the one in the 11th from it. Draw all the vedha causing lines and the resulting diagram is known as the Pataki Chakra. Place the planets in the horoscope in different signs in the Pataki charka and see the planets causing vedha on the Lagna. If the dandadhipati causes vedha on the Lagna, then the native suffers due to Patakirishta.

2. Computation of Yamardha-pati 2.1. Yama and Yamardha When a day is divided into 8 parts, each of them is known as a yama, which spans for

approximately 3 hours. When the yama is further divided into 2 parts, each of them is known as a yamardha. As the name states, ardha, means half and yama is the 8th part of the day; yamardha is the half of a yama and spans for "approximately" 1.5 hrs. Yama is known as the son of the Sun and strictly follows the Sun for its definition and hence the Sunrise and Sunset becomes crucial for their computation. Each day a new cycle of yama and yamardha starts with the Sunrise and Sunset. The duration between the Sunrise and Sunset is called Dinamana (Dina is day, and mana is length or duration). Thus there are 4 yama in a dinamana and 8 yamardha in that which spans for 3 hrs and 1.5 hrs approximately. Since the duration of the dinamana can change with seasons, so does the duration of the Yama and Yamardha and hence they cannot be taken exactly as 3 or 1.5 hrs, but need to be computed for each day. Similarly, the duration of the night from Sunset to subsequent Sunrise is called the Ratrimana, where ratri means night. 2.2. Yamardhapati Yamardhapati means lord of yamardha. The computation of the lord of Yamardha differs from day to night. The method of finding out the yamardhapati is given below: 2.2.1. Day based The 1st yamardha is lorded by the lord of the weekday. The subsequent yamas are reckoned from the previous yamardhapati counting the 6th weekday lord wherefrom. For example the 1st yamardha on a Sunday shall be that of the Sun, the 2nd one shall be the 6th weekday lord from the Sun, which happens to be Venus. The 3rd one shall be lorded by 6th weekday lord from Venus, which is Mercury. 2.2.2. Night based Similar to day yamardhas, the 1st yamardha of the night is also lorded by the weekday lord. However, the 2nd lords shall be counted as the 5th weekday lord from the previous one. Thus, the 1st night based yamardha lord on a Sunday would be the Sun and the 2nd yamardha lord would be the 5th weekday lord counted from the Sun, which is Jupiter and similarly the 3rd yamardha lord is 5th weekday lord from Jupiter, which is the Moon.
..........Day Yamardha Lords.........Night Yamardha 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 Sunday Su Ve Me Mo Sa Ju Ma Su Su Monday Mo Sa Ju Ma Su Ve Me Mo Mo Tuesday Ma Su Ve Me Mo Sa Ju Ma Ma Wednesday Me Mo Sa Ju Ma Su Ve Me Me Thursday Ju Ma Su Ve Me Mo Sa Ju Ju Friday Ve Me Mo Sa Ju Ma Su Ve Ve Saturday Sa Ju Ma Su Ve Me Mo Sa Sa Me Su Ju Mo Yamardha Lords... 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Ju Mo Ve Ma Sa Me Su Ve Ma Sa Me Su Ju Mo Sa Me Su Ju Mo Ve Ma Su Ju Mo Ve Ma Sa Me Mo Ve Ma Sa Me Su Ju Ma Sa Me Su Ju Mo Ve Ve Ma Sa

3. Danda and Dandadhipati: Each yamardha is divided into four dandas each of them measuring approximately 22.5 minutes. If the day is reckoned as that of 60 ghatikas, the duration of 1 yama would be 7.5 ghatikas, 1 yamardha would be 3.75 ghatikas and 1 danda would be 0.9375

ghatikas or 56.25 vighatikas. Thus there are 64 dandas in a day. This can be noted that the day can be reckoned as the duration of 60 ghatikas or 64 dandas. 3.1. Night based danda-adhipati The lord of each danda is called the dandadhipati. Like the yamardhapatis, the counting of the dandadhipatis vary from day to night. In the night, the 1st danda for a yamardha is ruled by the yamardhipati, while the subsequent ones are found by counting 6th weekday lord from the weekday of the previous dandadhipati. For illustration, we all know by now that the 1st yamardha at night (at Sunset) on a Sunday is ruled by Sun and hence the 1st dandadhipati is also the Sun. The 2nd dandadhipati in the Suns yamardha would be ruled by the 6th planet from the Sun in the weekday order, which is Venus. Similarly, the 3rd dandadhipati would be ruled by 6th planet from Venus, which is Mercury and the 4th one would be ruled by the Moon. 3.2. Day based danda-adipati The counting of the dandadhipatis for Day based yamardhas is done in the following ways. The 1st danda of the day based yamardhas is lorded by the yamardhipatis themselves. The 2nd one is lorded by the planet indicated by the number attained, when the previous dandadhipatis number is divided by 2 and expunging the decimals. When the number arrived at is less than 1, then Rahu becomes the Dandadhipati, since his number is 8. For illustration, lets find the dandadhipatis in the Moons Yamardha. The first one would be lorded by Moon; the 2nd would be by Sun, since we get 1, ruled by the Sun when we divide Moons number, which is 2 by 2. The 3rd would be ruled by Rahu, since dividing, Suns number by 2 we get 0.5 and the 4th one would be ruled by Mercury, since when we divide Rahus number, which is 8 by 2, we get 4, which is ruled by Mercury. Writing the dandadhipatis in Moons night yamardha we arrive at Moon -> Sun-> Rahu Mercury. The number of each planet is given below:
12345678(Ketu doesnot figure in the list of dandadhipatis) Sun Moon Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus Saturn Rahu

The list of dandadhipatis in various day and night based yamardhas is given below for ready reference:
........Day Danda Sun Moon 1 Danda Lords....Night 2 3 4 Su Ra Me Mo Mo Su Ra Me Danda 1 2 Su Ve Mo Sa 3 Me Ju Lords 4 Mo Ma

4. Judgement Standard jyotish books say that patakirishta happens whenever the dandadhipati is placed with the Lagna or having vedha on the Lagna. However, our tradition teaches that since Lagna is for intelligence and Moon is for health and longevity, if pataki-rishta happen from the lagna, then suffers in his intelligence, however if it happens from the Moon, there could be serious troubles to health and longevity. There are various types of Patakirishta which is discussed below. Wherever lagna is mentioned, substitute it will Moon for health related matters, else from lagna will show troubles to intelligence such as mis-direction and failing of judgment. 4.1. NiyataPatakirishta: a. Malefic dandadhipati is placed in the Lagna or cause vedha to the Lagna b. The four places of vedha do not have either conjunction of a benefic or its vedha, however, have conjunction with or vedha of Malefics. Such patakirishta cause death of the newborn very early i.e., in days as indicated by the rasis causing vedha. Benefic vedha or conjunction on the Lagna or the Lagna vedha rasis, can delay the death to month or year indicated by the Pataki Chakra. 4.2 Aniyata Patakirishta: a. Malefic dandadhipati is placed in the Lagna or cause vedha to the Lagna b. The four places of vedha have either conjunction of benefics or vedha from them. Or c. Benefic dandadhipati is placed in the Lagna or cause vedha to the Lagna d. The four places of vedha have either conjunction of malefics or vedha from them. Such patakirishta does not cause death of the newborn but suffer severe health troubles in days, years as indicated by the rasis causing vedha. If benefic danadhipati is placed in the Lagna or have vedha on it and other vedha rasis have conjunction or vedha from Benefics, then this augurs well for the native and the native enjoys good health. Malefics & Benefics For judging the patakirishta, Rahu, Ketu, Sun, Saturn and Mars are considered as

malefic whereas the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are considered benefic.

Yamardhapati: The native is born in day time on Sunday. The Sunrise on that day was at 05:31:42 am (5.528hrs) and the Sunset was at 06:10:12 pm (18.17hrs), which makes the dinamana (duration of day) to be 12.642hrs. Diving it by 8 parts, each part would be 1.58hrs. The native is born at 14.546hrs which is 9.018hrs after Sunrise. Thus the yamardha rising at the moment of birth is 9.018/1.58 = 5.7 or 6. We check the yamardha table and find that 6th yamarda in day half of Sunday is ruled by Jupiter. Thus Jupiter becomes the yamardhapati for the native. Dandadhipati: The danda rising in Jupiter's yamardha can be known from the decimals of the yamardha which is 0.7 in this case. Since there are 4 dandas in a yamardha, the 1st danda will be shown by decimals from .00 to .25, the 2nd one will be .25 to .50, the 3rd one will be .50 to .75 and the 4th one will be shown by .75 to 1.00. This shows that the native is born in 3rd danda of Jupiter which is ruled by Moon (from the table). Thus the dandhadipati for the native will be Moon. Analysis: Lagna is in Sagittarius with no conjunction, however Vedha from Venus. Since Venus is

benefic

to

the

Lagna,

it

will

save

the

native

from

all

aristas.

Moon is in conjunction with Rahu, have vedha from Ketu, Mars, Mercury and Sun and Jupiter. The vedha of Rahu, Ketu, Mars and Sun cause severe health and mental trouble to the native, however the vedha of Mercury and Jupiter is the salvaging factor. Progeny in Jyotish II: Number & sex of children

Number

of

children

1. The number of children can be found out by counting the Navamsa gained by the 5th lord. For e.g., the 5th lord is placed in Virgo Rasi and Gemini Navamsa. Counting from Gemini (Navamsa) to Virgo Rasi [Virgo (6) - Gemini (3) = 3], we have four signs, i.e., the 5th lord has to gain three Navamsas to reach Virgo or upto three children should be anticipated (COVA- Page 190). This is however a crude method can can be used with extreme care. Max. no. of child = Rasi sign Navamsa Sign

Pt. Rath says that, for this method to work, the 5th lord should be placed with the Jupiter (Karaka for Navamsa). However, from an illustration given in Page 200 of COVA, we see that this is not a necessary condition. Here Mars is not associated or aspected by Jupiter, but the Lagna is aspected by Jupiter from the 7th, through Rasi and Graha Drsti both. Here we might conclude that for this method to work, Jupiter should be strongly placed in the horoscope and influence the factors of progeny. 2. This can also be seen from the planets aspecting the 5th by Graha or Rasi Drsti. Riders The number of children is limited by the Rahu - Ketu axis, unless Jupiter is strongly placed in the D-1, to eliminate all the putra Dosas. (COVA, Page 184) Birth of Twins The signs Aquarius and Scorpio have two lords each and hence if they happen to be the house of child/ pregnancy, they can indicate twins. Most standard texts prescribe the involvement of the Signs Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio or Aquarius for the birth of the twins. They add Gemini and Virgo also to Aquarius and Scorpio, since the signs are lorded by Mercury whose nature is dual. Illustration In the chart of the standard nativity, the 5th lord Moon is in Aquarius Rasi and Pisces Navamsa, which shows that there are possibilities of 11 children, however while we count from Pisces we have to stop in Taurus, because Gemini is occupied by a node. Thus the maximum no. of children is limited to 2 only shown by the signs Aries and Taurus.

Saptamsa chart can be seen for more details about children. The details of judging Saptamsa Chart is given in subsequent section. 1st child: The Saptamsa Lagna is in an Odd sign and hence the counting shall be in a zodiacal manner. The 1st child is shown by the 5th lord Mars, placed in Gemini with Moon and Ketu. 2nd child: The 2nd child is shown by the 7th lord Mercury. Mercury is placed in Scopio and has exhange. Scorpio generally shows female child being an even sign. Due to the exchange of planets, it indicate male child. Its worthwhile to note that the 6th lord, the maraka is aspecting Mercury, showing that the child shall face terrible condition and can face death. However, due to Graha Dristi of Jupiter on Mercury and Rasi Drsti on the Lagna, the child is saved.

Sex

of

children

Rasi Chart For matters concerning children, the placement of the fifth lord and the planets should be seen from the Jupiter, the naisargika putra karaka. If there are planets in strengths from the Jupiter, they can indicate the number and nature of the children. The placement of the fifth lord from Jupiter will indicate the extent of gains from Children etc.- Pt. Sanjay Rath (COVA, Page 169) Normally for determination of sex of the child, the chart of the father is a better indicator. (COVA, Page 188)

The

Saptamsa

The timing of birth of Individual children, their nature, abilities and fortune is seen in the Saptamsa chart. This has been explained in detail by Maharishi Jaimini Upadesha Sutras. (COVA 8.6.1) Counting The first child is seen from the 5th house counted zodiacally or anti-zodiacally depending on whether the Lagna is ODD or EVEN . The subsequent pregnancies are seen from every third house (Manduka Gat i). Thus if an odd sign ascends in the Saptamsa, the individual pregnancies are seen in the 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th etc. If an even sign ascends in the saptamsa, the individual pregnancies are seen in the 9th, 7th, 5th, 3rd and so on. (COVA) After the Manduka Gati reached the point of start, the sequence of jumps would repeat again, which cant be allowed. To counter this problem, the next sign arrived at is by Crawling the sign. For illustration, after the jump sequence reaches from 5th to 3rd, the next sign after 3rd would be 5th again, thus here the jump doesnt progress to the 5th, but the 4th there in, where the frog is supposed to be crawling, than jumping as there is no space for jumping, 5th house, being already considered. Thus the order of pregnancy becomes 5-7-9-11-1-3-4-6-8-10-12-2. For even sign the sequence becomes 9-7-5-3-1-11-10-8-6-4-2-12. The nodes generally indicate the last child. For exapmple, if Rahu is in the 7th or joins the seventh lord, the native may have two children. (Jaimini Sutras) Sex of the Child The sex of the child is seen from the lord of the sign ruling the house of pregnancy. If the lord is exalted or conjoin male planets (Sun, Rahu, Jup, Mars), the issue is male. If the lord is debilitated or conjoins female planets (Moon, Ketu, Venus), the issue is female. Saturn and Mercury are eunuch planets, but they have found to indicate female and male children respectively.

If the lord of the sign is neither exalted/ debilitated, not conjoins any other planets, the sex of the child is seen from the nature of the sign occupied by it. All Odd signs excepting the Aquarius and Gemini are male birth signs while all the even signs, expecting Cancer and Pisces are Female birth signs. Riders 1. Effect of Parivartana On Counting If there is a exchange of house (Parivartana Yoga) between the Saptamsa Lagna lord and the lord of any other house, the counting will be based on whether the other sign is ODD or EVEN and not the oddity of the Saptamsa Lagna. However the counting still starts from the Saptamsa Lagna. (COVA, Page 193) On sex of child If a lord of the child associate with a planet, lets say Venus and there is a parivartana of this planet with another Planet, lets say Sun. The influence of the other planet, namely Sun will be more dominant over the lord of the child, in determining the sex of the child. (COVA, Page 193). However, if there is a parivartana of the lord of child with another planet, then the sex of the child, determined by the lord of the child is simply reversed. For e.g., if the lord of the child is Venus is placed in Leo, with Moon and the lord of Leo, Sun is placed in house of Venus, Taurus, then the sex of the child indicated by Venus in conjunction with Moon, i.e., Female, shall be changed to Male. 2. Lord of child placed in house of another child If the lord of a child is placed in the house of another child, then one of the children indicated by them shall survive. For illustration the 5th lord is placed in the 7th house, one of the children signified by the 5th and the 7th lords will survive. (Pt. Sanjay Rath). However, in COVA, Pt. Sanjay has presented one more viewpoint while showing the use of Drekkana for co-borns, whereby when the counting reaches a sign which houses another lord of the child, the count crawls over to another sign. To illustrate the point he says However, Capricorn houses two sisters as indicated by Mercury and Jupiter and should normally have limited the number of elder co-borns. Since the number is actually higher, the next sign Aquarius will indicate the co-born. (COVA, Page 120) Two child lords placed together If two lords of the child are placed together, then one of the children shall survive. For e.g., if the lords of 5th and 9th are placed in the same sign, then one among the children shown by them shall survive. However, it is difficult to determine who among them shall survive and can only be determined from practical events. In the present case, if there is a miscarriage of the first child, the 3rd child shown by the 9th lord shall survive and vice-versa. One planet becomes lord of two houses of children If one planet happens to indicate more than one child, then the first child will be shown by the lord of the child however, the 2nd one will be shown by the house of the child and the planets placed therein. To illustrate his point Pt. Rath says in COVA- page 120, when one of the children have been indicated by Mars (House of child Scorpio), and the next house of the child happens to be Aries, Mars will not show the child, however Aries, placed with Moon will show a sister who is emotional (Moon) and Rash (Aries). Had there been no planet, then Aries would have shown male birth. Saptamsa lagna lord in Marana Sthana from lord of child If Venus becomes the lord of Saptamsa Lagna, the issues indicated by the planets in the 8th from Venus cannot survive unless conjoins Ketu (Ganapati), as these issues will have Venus in the Marana Sthana

(Reference). The same principle can be extended to other planets. Thus in case of Different Saptamsa Lagna, the placement of the lord of the child in the following places cannot survive. Sun- 2nd Moon- 6th Mars- 7th Mercury- 7th Jupiter- 11th Venus - 8th Saturn- 1st Rahu - 5th

Thus the principle states that if the Saptamsa Lagna lord is placed in a Marana karaka Sthana from the Lord of the child, then either the parent or the child survive, unless, there is a blessing. (To be continued...)

Progeny in Jyotish I: Fertility of Parents
Introduction In human life, the birth of children occupies a very prominent place. The parents find their own image in their children and see the progression of their lineage though the future of their children. The mother has to pass through nine months of grooming of the infant, with all it takes, which a mother can better understand and the results are still uncertain. Many of them are born still, many of them are born with incapability and many get eradicated from their very start of journey. Every thing has a very profound impact on the parents and their future. Prognosticating the sex of the unborn child has been a matter of concern in the recent years, where the foetus are killed when they are substantially grown and had their identity as a human child inside the womb. If the sex of the child is not what the parents want, they were brutally extricated. Thanks to the medical science that it cant say anything about the sex of the child before it grows up substantially and help the parents to decide in advance whether or not to have a baby. This is where Jyotish comes to rescue. Because it can see the path much ahead of the time, it can forewarn the parents about the future possibilities and help them in making a conscious decision. The more important thing of all is that Jyotish can give remedies, when it judges the possibilities are more negative than positive. Such remedies not only eradicate the root of the problem, but also prepare the parents to boldly face the impending dangers. In the forthcoming portions, we shall study, how to prognosticating the birth and life of the children and the remedies to address the impending difficulties and danger to the parents and child. Fertility of the Parents => If the lord of the 5th in the Rasi chart is placed with Mercury, Venus or Saturn, there is problem is procreation as these three planets tend to obstruct the naisargika putra karaka Jupiter. => In Female Horoscope, Moon and in Male horoscope, Sun and Jupiter becomes the key controller progeny in the saptamsa and thus the procreation. If they are badly placed, being afflicted, or placed in the Maraka Sthana in the Saptamsa, this can show problem or denial of progeny

=> Strong influences of the fiery element (Mars, Sun) on the fifth house. This can happen due to conjunction, aspect of parivartana of the 5th house / lord. This can be overcome by increasing the dominance of Jala Tattva on the 5th. (COVA, Page 199) => Jaimini Says Sun, Rahu and Jupiter in the 9th shall indicate many Sons, which is also mentioned by Parasara who indicates that the Sun, Rahu or Jupiter will give illustrious son. (Sanjay Rath, J.S. 1.4.25) => The Moon in the 9th house gives one Son. (J.S. 1.4.26) => The ninth in odd sign indicates many children and Vice versa. (J.S. 1.4.29 - 30) Lack of Fertility Method of Deha (Jaimini Sutras) The method of Deha given by Maharishi Jaimini in Upadesha Sutra is infallible in predicting the fertility or procreative ability of the native. Pt. Rath explains this in the following wordsThis method is based on the Rasi chart. Determine the arudha padas of the third and ninth house from the Lagna and the Sun. The arudha padas of the 3rd and 9th from the Sun (AS3 and AS9) constitute the ability to sustain the Atma (soul- signified by Sun) in the form of Sperm (i.e., the sperms should have life in them). The arudha padas of the third and ninth from the Lagna (A3 and A9) constitute the physical ability to procreate. If the Sun is in the 2nd, 6th, 8th or 12th houses from any of these padas, the same can be damaged resulting to infertility. Similarly, if Venus and Mercury conjoin these padas, they produce infertility. If either of these two padas is not damaged, childbirth is delayed and not denied. If the padas from Lagna are afflicted as above, medical attention is required and the astrologer should not attempt remedial measures unnecessarily. However, if the affliction is from the padas from Sun, then astrological remedial measures are necessary. Mercury, Saturn and / or Venus in the trines to the saptamsa Lagna tend to deny children (J.S. 1.4.24).Mercury and Saturn are eunuch planets and in saptamsa Lagna deny fertility. Venus, on the other hand causes association with too many thereby depleting the chances for progeny. However If both planets giving children (Sun, Rahu, Jupiter and Moon) and those denying children (Mercury, Saturn and Venus) are present, a child will be born after some delay. (J.S. 1.4.27) Stressing the point Pt. Rath says in COVA (page 175) that, if Saturn, Venus and Mercury are in trines alone, then the native is barren irrespective of all yogas in the birth chart. This is an overriding rule. For female charts, the ninth should be considered and for male charts the fifth for determining procreative successes. (Sanjay Rath, J.S.) Marss and Saturns influence on the trine to the Saptamsa Lagna show that the native will have Adopted Child or Dutta-Putra . Pt. Rath says, Mars and Saturn are karaka for the younger and elder brother respectively and could indicate begetting a child through a kinsman as the native many lack procreative abilities or otherwise. It also indicates marriage with a divorcee/widow who already has children from a pervious wedlock. Denial of Children due to Curses (COVA, Page 172) The denial of children could be due to curses incurred in the past birth. These have been elaborately listed in BPHS along with the remedial measures and include Brahma Shapa (curse of priest / astrologer), pitri Shapa (curse of father or elderly paternal relative), Matri Shapa (Curse or mother or someone from mothers family), Shatru Shapa (Curse of enemies) etc. Let us examine the Brahma Shapa to understand the underlying principles. The conditions for this curse are as follows: a. Rahu in the signs of Jupiter: Rahu represent the curses of past birth and is hence a karmic control

planet. In the signs of Jupiter it shows the curse due to priest, judge, astrologer or all persons signified by Jupiter. b. Jupiter conjoined or aspected by Mars and Saturn: Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn owned by Saturn and become marana karaka in the 3rd house signified by Mars. These planets aspecting Jupiter can block it to the extent of denying (Mars) or delaying (Saturn) the fruits of Jupiter, i.e., Children. Simultaneously, the ninth lord should be in the 8th house to confirm that curse. If this condition is not fulfilled, remedial measures shall work easily. c. Sun, Moon or Jupiter and the fifth lord, placed in the eighth house with Malefics: Jupiter, the karaka of the fifth is called Brahmanaspati (the fruits of Brahma) and hence, the Sattvik planets Sun, Moon or Jupiter will represent Saints, Brahmins and learned men respectively whose placement in the 8th house (curses) with malefic will deny progeny. d. Jupiter in the fifth house conjoined or aspected by the 6th lord: The 6th house being the 2nd from the house of children, 5th, is maraka for children. So the placement of the marakesh, sixth lord in the house of children, with Jupiter (already showing loss), will constitute a curse from a Brahmin due to anger or enmity (shown by 6th lords involvement). If in the ninth house, they afflict the father and fortune of the native and if in the Lagna, they afflict the name and life of the native.
