Major Content Idea Proportional Relationships Standards/Benchmarks LA.7.1.6.5 LA.7.3.2.2 MA.7.A.1.1 MA.7.A.1.3 MA.7.A.1.6 The student will relate new vocabulary to familiar words. The student will draft writing by organizing information into a logical sequence and combining or deleting sentences to enhance clarity. Distinguish between situations that are proportional or not proportional, and use proportions to solve problems Solve problems involving similar figures. Apply proportionality to measurement in multiple contexts, including scale drawings and constant speed.
Deconstructed Standards and/or Item Specifications, if applicable Deconstructed Standards Item Specifications Essential Question(s) Why is it important to know if two or more items are proportional? Vocabulary Ratio, rate, unit rate, equivalent ratios, proportion, cross product, unit conversion factor Cross-Curricular Connections - Snapshot Writing: Have students explain whether all rectangles are similar and justify their answers. Art: Research the original size of The Dance Class painting by Edgar Degas and list what the dimensions would be with a scale factor of 1/3. Social Studies: Have students find the height of the Statue of Liberty and create a word problem using indirect measurement. History: Create a model of a battlefield. Reading: Read How Big is a Foot by Rolf Myller. Cross-Curricular Connections Lesson Plan Links

Misconceptions The student may mistakenly believe that order is not important when writing proportions. The student may mistakenly believe that they need to multiply all of the numbers in a proportion. The student may mistakenly believe that figures must be in the same orientation to be similar figures. Students may mistakenly believe they can add or subtract to get a proportional ratio when they need to multiply or divide.

Misconceptions Students may mistakenly believe when you round an exact answer, you are estimating. One should estimate first. Students may mistakenly believe that a fraction becomes a percent when you divide. You must divide the numerator by the denominator and then convert a decimal to a percent by moving the decimal point two places to the right. Students may mistakenly believe that a percent has two decimal places. A percent can have any number of decimal places. Students may mistakenly believe that to turn a fraction into a decimal you always divide by the smaller number. Students should always divide the numerator by the denominator. Students may mistakenly believe that they do not need to convert the percent into a decimal when solving a ( i = prt ) problem. Students may mistakenly believe that they can use months in place of time when solving a ( i = prt ) problem. Students must express time in years.
