combination of all these makes Crete a cosmopolitan center

Theodoulos Papavassiliou
Heraklion is a modern town (the largest of
the island, with a population of
approximately 180,000 inhabitants), and is
the administrative, commercial, industrial
and agricultural centre of Crete. Is the
capital of the region of Crete. The strange
coexistence of the beautiful and the ugly,
the old and the new, the apparent
architectural chaos and the mixture of
buildings from different civilizations, makes
the city really interesting and attractive.
The fact that you may walk by the
Venetian port enjoying the view of an
ancient period and in two minutes distance
you may find yourself having a coffee or a
drink in a very modern and trendy caf -
bar, makes the visitor have a unique
feeling.
Eleftherios Venizelos square (Platia
Eleftheriou Venizelou), the Lions square as
the locals call it, is the citys traditional
centre. This will be your first and your last
destination during a day. Around this
square youll find all the commercial
streets of the town. There are many
restaurants and taverns offering Cretan
specialities throughout the area and also
many cafe and bars.
The eastern part of the Heraklion
prefecture has some major resorts near
the sea like Chersonisos, some major
archaeological sites like Malia, and many
important Byzantine churches. Only 5
kilometres south from the centre of
Heraklion you can visit Knossos, the
largest and the most brilliant centre of
Minoan civilization.
Great beaches, intensive night life, warm
people, great cuisine and the strange
"game between the old and the new are
promising unforgettable holidays in the
island.

the special sights of Heraklion. It was built
at the entrance of the Venetian port in

SHOPPING#SHOPPING#
Theodoulos Papavassiliou
The citys commercial centre is located in
the triangle formed by the Averof, 1821
and Kalokairinou streets, as well as in the
surrounding streets. There are many
commercial stores with clothes and shoes
for all ages and styles. The shopping
centre of Heraklion, does not have many
differences from the shopping centres of
other European cities. Its nice to combine
your shopping with the special delicacies
you can find in the same streets.
"Loukoumades with honey and the famous
bougatsa (pie filled with cream) will make
even an outstanding shopping bill look
sweeter! Beyond the clothes stores, you
can find popular art stores and the
traditional knife stores where you can buy
the famous Cretan knives. In the lively
traditional market in the 1866 street, you
can find products for making your own
Cretan meal. There are many small shops
off the main streets which sell local
products and many gifts shops (some of
the with really strange gifts!) in 1866
Street and more so its side streets.
