Industrial Internet Switches

A definitive resource for industrial internet switches and applications

This premium remote power switch/distribution system is designed to provide remote management of AC power distribution and AC power operation control for all powered equipment's through local network or internet. This device is an intelligent power controller with four power outlets. Anyone with a web browser can access this power switch to perform power On, Off or Reboot. Once network connection has been established and the security login approved, power at each of the four outlets is controlled with a simple click in the browser. This compact PDU is standalone network appliance that requires no expensive master controller. Each outlet can be independently turned ON/OFF or cycled for power-on reset. Power can be controlled remotely via LAN/WAN or serial RS-232 connection. Complete control over when and what sequence equipment is restored with a timed delay or scheduled on/off/shutdowns to conserve energy in the data center. Eliminate service calls and increase reliability. Eliminate problems with brownouts and blackouts. An absolute necessity to manage power supplies to servers, routers, network equipment and industrial machinery securely from your web browser.

PLC (Programmable logic controller) communicate using one of several possible open or proprietary protocols, such as Modbus, Sinec H1, Profibus, CANopen, DeviceNet or FOUNDATION Fieldbus. The idea to use standard Ethernet makes these systems more inter-operable. Some of the advantages over other types of industrial network are: Increased speed, up from 9.6 kbit/s with RS-232 to 1 Gbit/s with Gigabit Ethernet over Cat5e/Cat6 cables or optical fiber Increased distance Ability to use standard access points, routers, switches, hubs, cables and optical fiber Ability to have more than two nodes on link, which was possible with RS-485 but not with RS-232 Peer-to-peer architectures may replace master-slave ones Better interoperability Difficulties of using Industrial Ethernet include: Migrating existing systems to a new protocol Real-time uses may suffer for protocols using TCP Managing a whole TCP/IP stack is more complex than just receiving serial data The minimum Ethernet frame size is 64 bytes, while typical industrial communication data sizes can be closer to 1-8 bytes. This protocol overhead affects data transmission efficiency.

The intent of this discussion is to provide a model for I2oT. It is oversimplified but should form the basis for more discussion and definition. This is not a proposal for a massive amount of research into new communication technology. It is a plea to use what we already have in a rational manner. A lot of assembly is required and some gaps need to be filled. Essential elementsI2oT will provide a means to integrate multiple physical media and multiple applications into a single system of industrial networks utilizing some common technology. I2oT is not a converged single stack with a single application layer or a single physical media. Indeed, one physical medium will not serve all installation requirements, and we need more than one application layer to serve all use cases. This discussion may miss some elements but should serve to stimulate discussion to fill in the gaps. The major elements are shown in the following illustration and discussed below.
