Test 16, Sections6-1 to 6-4

Objective : Solve oblique triangle problems.
Part 1: No calculatorsallowed(111) Problems 16 refer to XYZ. 1. Sketch XYZ. Label the angles and the corresponding sides. 6. Write Heros formula for XYZ.

Form A

Problems 79 refer to ABC. 7. Sketch ABC if a = 3, b = 5, and c = 7.

2. Write the law of cosines for finding side x in XYZ.

8. Based on the side lengths from Problem 7, which angle is the largest: A, B, or C? What property from geometry allows you to tell this quickly? 3. Write the law of sines for XYZ.

9. Write the law of cosines for ABC that involves the largest angle. Then perform a calculation that will tell whether the largest angle is acute or obtuse.

4. Write the area formula for XYZ that involves angle X. Problems 10 and 11 refer to DEF. 10. Side d = 4 and side e = 6. If sin F = 0.2, find the area of the triangle.

5. Write a formula for the semiperimeter, s, of XYZ.

11. Is angle F acute or obtuse? How do you know?

Part 2: Graphingcalculatorsallowed(1224) Problems 1214 refer to a triangle that has two sides of 50 ft and 70 ft and an included angle 57. 12. Sketch the triangle.

Form A
17. Find the area of the field using the area formula and the angle you calculated.

18. Find the area of the field directly, using Heros formula. Show that the answer agrees with the area in Problem 16. 13. Find the length of the third side of the triangle.

14. Find the area of the triangle.

19. Impossible Triangle Problem: Phoebe is asked to sketch a triangle with sides 3 cm, 4 cm, and 8 cm. Show her that it is impossible, by attempting to find the measure of the largest angle using the law of cosines.

15. Roof Problem: The figure shows a 20-foot-wide building that is to be built with an asymmetrical roof. Solar panels will be placed on the face adjacent to the 23 angle. What is the maximum length of solar panel that can be placed from the eaves to the ridge, perpendicular to both, without hanging over either one?

Variable Angle Problem (2023): Calvin is asked to find the area of a triangle with sides 50 cm and 60 cm and a variable included angle A. 20. Calvin finds that the area for A = 2 is about double the area for A = 1. Show him that this is correct.

21. Show Calvin that the area for A = 160 is not double the area for A = 80.

Surveying Problem (1618): Surveyors measure a triangular field and find that the sides have lengths 250 ft, 300 ft, and 500 ft.

22. The statement The area varies directly with the measure of the angle is false. Describe to Calvin properly how the area varies with the angle. 23. If the area of the triangle is 150 cm2, find the two possible values of A.

16. Find the measure of the largest angle of the triangle. Store the answer without rounding.

24. What did you learn as a result of doing this test that you did not know before?
