More information on this is given in the Required Textbook link in Blackboard Learn, a website which you access through MyBama. Objectives: The goal of the Chinese 102 course is to further develop proficiency in Chinese in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultural knowledge of China is also an important component of this course. Students will gain the ability to speak, react, and behave in a culturally appropriate manner in every day situations involving Chinese people and functions in China. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to 1) write 130 Chinese characters in simplified versions from memory, 2) read and write sentences and dialogs using simplified Characters, 3) speak Chinese using the pinyin tone system of pitch accent, 4) communicate in Chinese in specific task-based situations such as renting a car, shopping for clothing, celebrating birthdays, discussing location, hobbies, weather, travel plans, health, and future plans. Outcome Assessment: A variety of modes of communication are used to ascertain successful progress toward the course objectives. A basic understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and target language cultural awareness is assessed through live interaction via web conference, online workbook submission, proctored written quizzes and tests, and an oral proficiency interview with an Oral Proficency Examiner at the end of the semester (done via Skype). Course of Study: CH 102 consists of all material in the Chinese Link Level 1, Part 2 textbook (11 Lessons). The course is considered complete once the student has submitted the Final Exam and no other assignments, quizzes or tests will be accepted for grade computation. Unfinished lessons will result in scores of zero for those lessons.
