As you face the display console, the I/O switch is located at the lower right side of the base panel. 3. Sit on the seat and face the display console. Place your feet firmly in to the pedals. If you need to adjust the seat height, refer to the section below, Adjusting the Seat. Check the pedal straps. Pedal straps should be tight so that your feet cannot easily slide off the pedals. Begin pedaling. When the Precor banner appears, answer the Setup prompts by pressing Enter or press Quick Start to access Manual mode (default settings apply). Refer to Quick Start information on pages 18 and 25. To pause during your workout session, simply stop pedaling. Workout statistics stop accruing after 5 seconds if no pedal movement is detected. Then, the display reverts to Standby Mode. See Standby Mode on page 21. Scanning occurs automatically once you begin a course. To display one statistic (Time, Distance, Calories, etc.), press the Change key until the statistic you want is highlighted. That statistic will remain displayed until you press the Change key again.

Turn ON the C846.

Adjust the seat. Sit facing the display.

Adjust the pedal straps. 4. Begin working out. 5. For best results, maintain a constant RPM. Use the Heart Rate display option to maintain your heart rate in a target zone. (Pause)

Continue your workout. 6.

End your workout.

7. Once you finish exercising, be sure to cool down. When you complete a course on the C846, the 5-minute Cool Down program automatically begins. Cooling down (Cool down) after your workout helps reduce muscle stiffness and soreness by transporting excess lactic acid out of the working muscles. It also helps your heart rate return to its normal (non-exercising) state. Always incorporate a 3 to 5 minute cool down period at the end of your workout. See Cooling down After Your Workout on page 21. 8. Remove your feet from the C846 pedals. To help maintain your balance, hold onto the handrails (C846 upright) or seat (C846 recumbent) as you dismount.

STANDBY MODE
You can pause any time during your workout. Use this feature to rest or take a short break. To pause while working out, simply stop moving the pedals. You can tell that you are in Pause mode because Time and the other workout statistics stop accruing after 5 seconds. If you dont begin pedaling within 5 seconds, the C846 reverts to Standby mode. Dots appear on the display during Standby mode to simulate a countdown. The dots disappear from right to left and indicate how much time remains before the C846 assumes that you have stopped working out and resets the display. The workout statistics are deleted and the display appears blank or, if the unit is plugged in, the display returns to the Precor banner. To resume your workout, begin moving the pedals before the dots disappear from the display. Your workout statistics continue from where you left off.

COOLING DOWN AFTER A WORKOUT

Cooling down after your workout is important because it helps reduce muscle stiffness and soreness by transporting excess lactic acid out of the working muscles. Cooling down for at least 3 minutes helps provide a smooth transition that allows your heart rate to return to its normal (non-exercising) state. The C846 provides an automatic 5-minute cool down period that occurs once you complete a course. A prompt appears, indicating that you are in cool down. During your cool down, the displays on the console continue to appear. The Time display counts down so you know how much time is remaining in cool down. When you complete the 5-minute cool down, a prompt scrolls across the display indicating that you have completed the cool down period. Continue pedaling to review your workout statistics. After the statistics are scanned, the display reverts to the Precor banner. You can then stop pedaling and dismount from the cycle.

THE C846 HEART RATE FEATURE

To activate the heart rate feature on the C846, you need to purchase the Precor Heart Rate Option and install its receiver into the display console. To display your heart rate, you must wear the POLAR chest strap while working out. The chest strap transmits your heart rate signal to the receiver which, in turn, causes it to appear on the display. During your workout, the heart rate indicator lights and blinks at the same rate as your pulse. This provides a visual clue and indicates what your heart rate is doing even when the display is scanning a different feature. Note: The Smart RateTM display does not appear if you use the Quick Start key to access a course. The heart rate equipment is sensitive and it requires special care. If you are having difficulty with the C846 heart rate feature, see the Heart Rate Troubleshooting Tips described in the Maintenance section.
page 21

C846 Courses
The C846 provides programmed courses that adjust the resistance level automatically. This section can inform you about the special features and functions of the C846 courses and how to best utilize: the Smart RateTM feature the Interval course the Weight Loss course the Manual course the Hill Climb and Cross Country courses

Note: To choose a course, begin at the Precor banner and press Enter. Userfriendly prompts guide you through the course selections. Refer to Quick Steps to Working Out on page 20.

UTILIZING THE SMART RATETM FEATURE

Add the benefit of Smart RateTM to every course on the C846. Using Smart RateTM as a visual cue helps you adjust your exercise routine to suit specific needs. Smart RateTM simplifies the correlation between heart rate and exercise. You dont have to stop concentrating on your workout to find your pulse. It is displayed right in front of you along with the Smart RateTM zone. A blinking segment in the bar graph appears on the left of the display if you entered your age during the setup prompts. Once you begin a workout, the blinking segment can show the zone that your heart rate is in: Weight Loss or Cardiovascular. Important: Access to Smart RateTM is only available when the optional Precor heart rate receiver is installed in the C846. The person exercising must wear a POLAR chest strap. The Smart RateTM indicator lights do not appear when Quick Start is used to select a course.

For the ideal weight loss range, your heart rate should be between 55% and 70% of your maximum aerobic heart rate. It should never exceed 80% of your maximum aerobic heart rate or go above your training zone. Refer to Diagram 13 for your appropriate training zone.
page 22

When you maintain your heart rate between 70% and 85% of your maximum aerobic heart rate, you are improving your overall cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory fitness level. Maintaining your heart rate in either zone (weight loss or cardiovascular) for 30 minutes or more on a regular basis (minimum 3 times a week) provides the greatest benefits. Important: If the Smart Rate segment appears, but does not blink, it means that a receiver is installed, but that you are not wearing the chest strap or it is not working properly. To correct problems, refer to your Precor Heart Rate Option Owners Manual or to Obtaining Service on page 2.

INTERVAL COURSE SETTINGS

Interval training provides numerous benefits. Since interval training segments the workout into smaller components, a 20- or 30-minute workout seems to pass more quickly. In addition, studies have shown that it is a more efficient method for achieving aerobic benefitsyou start seeing improved cardiovascular fitness much sooner with less effort. Studies also show that people who interval train are more likely to stick with their fitness program. The interval course on the C846 lets you set the course intervals according to your training regimen. It alternates between 60 seconds of Rest and 60 seconds of Work. You set the resistance for the first rest and work interval and the software takes over from there, repeating the intervals throughout the course. At any point during the workout, you can change the resistance of the current interval by simply pressing the keys. The software remembers the new setting and applies it to the appropriate rest or work interval. Important: If you use the Precor Heart Rate Option, you can adjust the rest or work intervals if your heart rate is above or below the recommended zones for your age. For the weight loss mode, try to maintain your heart rate at the lower end (55% of maximum heart rate) while in the rest intervals and keep it at 70% of maximum heart rate while in the work intervals. To use the interval course, take the following steps: 1. Sit on the C846 and set your feet on the pedals. Begin pedaling. 2. While the Precor banner scrolls across the display, press Enter. 3. At the course prompt, use the key to select INTV. 4. Press Enter to proceed to the next prompt. When you finish answering the setup prompts, the Interval course begins. C846 Maintenance
The C846 requires little maintenance to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. However, you are responsible for typical maintenance tasks such as, cleaning the C846 to keep it free from dust and dirt accumulation. If you fail to maintain the C846 as described below, it could affect or void the Precor limited warranty.

CLEANING THE EQUIPMENT

Most of the working mechanisms are protected inside the C846 casing. However, for efficient operation, the C846 must be as clean as possible. Periodically wipe the frame, display console, and pedals, with a dampened (not dripping wet) clean cloth using a solution of mild soap and water. This helps to remove any dirt or dust that might affect the smooth operation of the C846. To clean the groves on the pedals, use a soft nylon scrub brush. Never pour water or spray liquids on any part of the C846. Allow the C846 to dry completely before using it. Vacuum the floor underneath the unit every week to prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt. The Precor Heart Rate Option equipment requires little maintenance beyond keeping it dust free. Dampen a sponge or soft cloth in mild soap and water to wipe the chest strap clean. Dry the surface thoroughly with a clean towel.

USING THE OPTIONAL BATTERY RECHARGER

If the C846 has been left ON for an extended period of time and no one has used the machine, the battery may need recharging. Symptoms of a low battery include: flickering or erratic display no Standby mode

no workout statistics appear or accumulate Note: Pedaling above 30 RPM must occur for several seconds before the display can be activated. Workout prompts and statistics only appear if the pedaling is continuous.

STORING THE POLAR CHEST STRAP

Store the chest strap transmitter in a place where dust and dirt cannot accumulate on it such as, a closet or drawer. Be sure to keep the chest strap protected from extremes in temperature. Do not store it in an area that may be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

HEART RATE TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

If you have purchased the Precor Heart Rate Option and installed the receiver into the display console, the C846 should be able to pick up a users heart rate signal if he or she is wearing the POLAR chest strap while working out. Important: The Precor heart rate receiver must be properly installed in the display console according to the instructions found in the Precor Heart Rate Option Owners Manual. A few easy steps can be taken before you need to call customer service regarding heart rate problems. One of the first things to do is verify the following: The C846 is turned ON. The POLAR chest strap is being worn properly by the user during a workout. The user is within 3 feet of the C846, facing the display, and pedaling above 30 RPM. The user is working out in a selected a course. (The Heart Rate feature is activated when a course profile appears.) Note that if the user presses Quick Start to access a course, the Smart RateTM feature will not appear. Other aspects of the heart rate option are discussed below: Determining if the Heart Rate Receiver is installed in the Display Console A quick way to determine if the heart rate receiver is installed in the C846 is to begin pedaling, press the Enter key and follow the prompts. If the heart rate receiver is installed, the prompt "ENTER AGE" appears after selecting a workout time. If you end up with the course profile being displayed immediately after entering a workout time, then the C846 does not have a heart rate receiver installed. If you wish to purchase the option, call 888-665-4404 to locate the dealer nearest you.

page 29

Detecting a Heart Beat It may take several seconds for the heart rate receiver to detect a number of valid heart beats. Once it does, the users heart rate is displayed when the Heart Rate indicator (LED) is lit during the scanning process. Throughout a workout the Heart Rate LED flashes at the same rate as your pulse. If --- appears when the Heart Rate indicator (LED) is lit and all the previously discussed steps have been taken, then you need to do the following: Make sure that the electrodes on the chest strap are moist and placed properly against the skin. Sometimes, due to body chemistry, the chest strap cannot successfully detect and transmit a heart rate. If this occurs, use the electrolyte spray that accompanies the Precor Heart Rate Option package. Follow the directions on the bottle. After spraying the electrode strips on the chest strap, check to be sure that the strap is comfortably tight around the chest and centered in the middle of the users chest. Refer to the Precor Heart Rate Option Owner's Manual. Another possibility which can cause erratic readings is that the chest straps battery may be dead. To purchase a new chest strap, call 888-665-4404 to locate the dealer nearest you.

SERVICING THE C846

Do not attempt to service the C846 yourself except for the maintenance tasks described in this manual. The C846 does not contain any user-serviceable parts that require lubrication. For information about product operation or service, call 888-665-4404.
