Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction Nowadays, technology evolution takes over the world. Many Countries if not all are involved to technology innovation. There are countries that prefer to use technology for business purposes and there are those with personal agenda. Adaptation for innovation took a route, from simpler method of computing to a modernize process now. This research study of the Effectiveness of using Server Management System for IETI College of Science and Technology will create a new diversity. A Window-based product designed to make it easier for your organization to manage, support, and maintain a distributed network of computer resources. A system can generate network monitoring, security, and files safety and authentication. These characteristics may help the school either for educational purposes or school facilities improvement. This system may be set as the main server that can operate the functions mentioned which may lead to better organization. The characteristics and capabilities of computers are the highlights and trends of Server Management System. As years pass by, computers continue to become smaller, faster, more reliable, less costly to purchase and maintain, and more interconnected within the network.

This study describes how the primary features of Systems Management Server (SMS) work and how each of those features can benefit the organization. After

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
explaining each feature individually, this study would describe how features are integrated to perform common tasks in an organization. This system introduces several primary features of SMS, such as software and hardware inventory. It also includes features that help monitor the activity of SMS and maintain healthy sites, such as backup and recovery. The implementation of some features on the server is different from the client, specifically taking advantage of the architecture for IETI College of Science and Technology. This study describes those differences for each primary feature. The suite provides solutions to provision, control, automation, and monitor servers from a central console and it even provide authentication. Access is easily controlled, whereas stored data must be managed. Networkbased data services eliminate the need for additional shared infrastructure, have a minimal impact on company administrators and are usually self - service for the user or suddenly simplify the data management.

Background of the Study It is important to realize that major changes and trends in computer systems have occurred during the major stages or generation of computing, and will continue into the future. The first generation of computers developed in the early 1950s, the second generation blossomed during the late 1960s, the third generation work computing into the 1970s, and the fourth generation has been the computer technology of the 1980s and 1990s. A fifth generation of computing systems and devices that accelerates the trends of the previous generations is predictable to evolve in the early 21st century.

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
Although we are moving into the fifth generation of computing it is still a subject of debate since the concept of generation may no longer fit the continual, rapid, changes occurring in computer hardware, software, data, networking technologies. But in any case, we can be sure that progress in computing will continue to accelerate, and that the development of Internet-based technologies and applications will be one of the major forces driving computing in this century. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework Server Management System is often enhanced as more effective and more suitable system. A complete, high-level design methodology has been proposed for embedded information system based on managing the system. Thought the reliability of this system has improved to very acceptable levels over the years, contacts are one of the most frequent accident points of any electromechanical system due to malicious doing. The concept of the Server Management System that results to great changes in the field of managing is more modern. By implementing digitalization, students information will surely be secured, data processing will be faster, more reliable and efficient, paper works can be reduced; data updating and editing is simplified.

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents different articles, book, case studies and literatures which have significant relatedness to the study that helped the researcher gain reliable information about the current study. It also provides more insight to have better understanding and perspective to the objective of the study. Related Literature The literature is a valuable resources and a bank of knowledge which is important to the researcher to think about the prevailing topic. This is a review about the case study which is based on the journal, books, articles and newspapers that were structured for the use of Server Management System. Here are some foreign and local literatures related to the current study written by different authors. Foreign Literature Case (2011) Convert it into a server you will also must need to set-up the operating system so it does not shut down at inconvenient times, yet runs in a low-power state when not being actively used. Low-power consumption is strongly emphasized in this quoted literature, because it is related to the server management system, even it is in on state it will be convenient to use. Crump (2007), While server virtualization provides your customers with increased flexibility to respond to business needs; it also introduces some problems,

10

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
especially in the storage area. Those problems can reduce the scope of the project or delay future ones. By assisting customers to develop best practices for managing storage for virtual servers, you can help keep server virtualization projects from being slow in too quickly and keep future projects in the pipeline. Most businesses were using servers as solution for storage problem, according to George Crump. Server Management System can be more important because of its characteristics which could handle large amount of data if necessary. McClure (2010), Of course, there are environments where unified storage may not be a fit. While server virtualization environments are ideal for unified storage from a flexibility standpoint, capacity and performance requirements must be given careful consideration. Users often plan for capacity, but typically get quite far down the server virtualization road before they realize the aggregate performance requirements of all the virtual machines they plan to deploy outstrips the performance of the storage systems. Applications then start contending for storage processing cycles and everything slows. McClure declared that the quality of performance, flexibility, storage systems and processing of data where integrated as one which can be considered as one of the amazing environment found in this system yet it correlates to the current study. Pillar (2009), Managed Service Providers (MSPs) must invest in a Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) solution in order to receive alerts to situations requiring immediate attention and also to provide maximum uptime to customers. In addition, today's RMM solutions allow many mundane, daily maintenance activities to be

11

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
scripted and delivered on a scheduled basis without human intervention. These activities include operating system and software application patch management, antivirus and anti spam updates, disk optimization and backup monitoring. RMM allows the MSP's staff to focus on high priority activities, provides the ability to support a larger quantity of customers and delays the need to hire more staff. Pillar noted that Managed Service Providers can be more effective and reliable, because it could lever and support larger quantity of costumer with the use of remote monitoring and management considered as one of the environment of the server which related to the study Martha Young (2011), Blade servers offer real, tangible benefits to customers needing to implement more than eight to ten servers. They provide improved data center utilization through a reduced footprint, deployment, management and maintenance convenience, and reduced total power consumption. Like all new technologies, blade server objections can be addressed through careful assessment of customer needs and vendor evaluations According to Martha Young, server may improve the managing system through a less deployment, less power consumption, more effective maintenance and handiness in the field of management which is related to the study. Fluckinger (2011), Developing plans for virtual server backup is another uncertainty, as the health IT world awaits the HIPAA omnibus rule, which outlines how federal regulators plan to enforce new health data privacy and security standards. That

12

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
rule has been sitting at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) since March, the typically quick review process having been given a few extensions. Fluckinger added that the server would serve as back-upping tool for file and information to facilitate security and privacy for unauthorized threats which is related to the study. Castagna, (2012) Server virtualization adds both simplicity and complexity to server infrastructures, but it unarguably creates a far more nimble and economical environment. It does that by essentially distancing itself from the hardware, which, for the most part, remains largely unchanged. So its an evolution that has occurred without any significant disturbances to the underlying server infrastructure. Rich Castagna assured that server would both simply and complex, more nimble and economical which means that server is more efficient to apply yet it does correlates to the current study. Local Literature Asaro, (2011) Overall, backup is still the de facto method of protecting data and will be for at least the next decade. Having said that, Tony, think that the beginning of the end is upon us. Backup processes are being replaced incrementally. Replication and recovery will be used more often as will be application-based data protection tools. These two points seem contradictory, but its often the way within IT that both the status quo and the next-generation approach coexist for long periods of time. Asaro thought that back-upping of files or data information is one of the factors of protecting the organization through threats which give assurance to the benefactor and it

13

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
was related to the study. Inquirer (2012), Server Virtualization technology involves the creation of software and hardware allowing the maximum use of the capacity of a single physical server, said Joel H. Garcia, Microsoft Philippines Server & Tools Business Group Lead. With this, customers could approach cloud (computing) opportunities, whether private or public, on their own terms supported by advanced capabilities giving them confidence to achieve their goals. Cloud computing involves the use of remote servers and hosted services over the Internet. Daily Inquirer, a business news paper, said that server virtualization technology same as Server Management System could give confidence to achieve goals and hosted services over the internet network or local network which is connected to the current study. Related Studies Nowadays, businesses, organizations even schools were adopting new advance techniques to monitor their business transactions. Here are some of the foreign and local studies which came from books. Articles and thesis that were related to the study. Foreign Studies Silberschatsz (2007), Ideally, a server should look to its clients like conventional, centralized file system. Accordingly, service activity has to be carried out across the network; instead of single centralized data repository, there are multiple independent storage devices. The multiplicity and dispersion of its servers and storage devices should make transparent.

14

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
Silberschatsz encoded that server could be centralized file system that can access through network and has multiple independent storage devices so that the system could interact with ease which is related to the study. Mogull (2010), Agent management consists of two main functions: deployment and maintenance. On the deployment side, most tools today are designed to work with whatever workstation management tools your organization already uses. As with other soft-ware tools, you create a deployment package and then distribute it along with any other software updates. Mogull said that workstation management tools could be more helpful in upgrading software for the system and organization of information is utilize which is related to the study. Siebert (2010), As a result, managing storage in a virtual environment is an ongoing challenge that usually requires the combined efforts of desktop, server, virtualization and storage administrators to ensure that virtualized servers and desktops perform well. Siebert point out that server virtualization is the combination of desktop hardware; an operating system and administrator to ensure that server will perform well and it linked to the study. McClure (2010), Storage-area network (SAN) or block-based storage is a mature technology. Advantages to this approach include: Optimization for high performance and reliability for data-intensive workloads, facilitates faster throughput and improved performance, a large pool of experienced administrators, a wide variety of available

15

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
physical management tools from virtualization vendors like VMware, as well as thirdparty suppliers, and storage administrators familiarity. McClure explained that storage-area network or block-based storage is more advance technology with the purpose of optimization for high performance system which correlates to the present study. Local Studies Santos (2012), Charles Ty said that only 30 percent of funds were for business innovation, which is important for the changing world that is moving towards a mainstream era. With the increasing global reach of the Internet, more and more data were being sent from one place in the world to another Ty said. The storage infrastructure from 20 years ago just wont cut it anymore, he said. HPs Convergence Infrastructure is a combination of servers, storage, networks, and management software that makes a complete package with significantly lower costs and fewer parts. Santos coined that server can be a complete package in dealing with advance technology and according to HP Storage Philippines Category manager Charles Ty it can purchase at lower cost which related to the study. Montecillo (2012) Manila, Philippines The government is setting up its own private cloud of servers that would host the entire bureaucracys email and other information communications technology (ICT) services. These are delivered with the use of servers and tech-storage facilities that may be located in different parts of the world.

16

International Electronics and Technical Institute Inc. # 34 Lark Street, Sta. Elena, Marikina City
Montecillo touted that private clouding of server could coupe the entire bureaucracy using information communication technology that handle the emails of the government and which related to the study. Villanueva, et al. (2010) Concluded that computerized system is better because it is efficient in particular with the validity and precision of the time that is logged into the system. It cannot be easily manipulated by the supervisors even the employee for it is a secured system that only administrator can access only, generate and print out the records. Villanueva concluded that a system which computerized was more efficient and better because administrator only can access the secured system and the administrator only can generate decision according to that matter, yet it correlated to the present study.
