2009 Space Cryogenics Workshop q

The 23rd Space Cryogenics Workshop (SCW) was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Arcadia, California from June 23 to 25, 2009, and was organized and sponsored by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and The Aerospace Corporation. Arcadia is a beautiful city in close proximity to Pasadena which is the home of many leading scientic and cultural institutions, including California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Jet Propulsion Lab and the Norton Simon Museum of Art, etc. As has become customary in recent years, the workshop was held a week before the Cryogenics Engineering Conference (Tucson, Arizona). The workshop brought together scientists and engineers who are actively involved in the eld of cryogenics as it relates to space applications, where acquaintances were renewed and new connections were made. The event was well attended with over 109 participants from around the world representing industry, academia, and government. The technical program consisted of 39 papers, presented in 10 non-parallel sessions. The June 23rd Welcome Reception took place at the Embassy Suites with catering by the hotel. Following the welcoming address by Laurie Huget of the Cryogenic Society of America (CSA), the rst day of Workshop began with the rst two sessions devoted to Cryogenic Space Missions, including Astro-H, JWST, SPICA, SMILES, and Martian/Lunar missions. The third session was on Space Cryogenic Components with topics on energy storage units, sun shield design, integrated selfpumped loop, and applications of high temperature superconductors in space. This was followed by the session on the Cryogenic Test Facility with the discussion of reduced gravity simulation and characterization of superconducting components. The concept of a Cryogenic Orbital Testbed was also introduced. The workshop on June 24th was concluded with sessions on Cryostats and Instruments. A banquet was held in the hotel catered by Capistranos. During the banquet, the Best Paper Award from SCW2007 was presented by Leon Hastings to A. Ravex and P. Crespi on their paper, Air Liquide Space Cryocooler Systems. On the next day, the rst two sessions were devoted to cryocoolers, with invited papers from Ball, Creare, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon addressing the capability of their space coolers. This was followed by discussions on Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerators, Dilution Refrigerators, Thermoacoustic Coolers and Pulse Tubes. The second day of workshop concluded with the session on propulsion systems. In this workshop, two papers were presented in poster formats, one on a magneto-resistive heat switch and the other on a tabletop cryogenic chamber for UV photo-doping. Attendants appeared to enjoy having informal technical exchange with the authors during the breaks. With 109 participants, the 23rd Space Cryogenic Workshop has the largest attendance in recent history of the Workshop.
