Datacolor MC-90 Spectrometer The Datacolor (DCI) MC-90 spectrometer is at the heart of the DCI family of spectrophotometers.

It is the key component that enables an inter-instrument agreement among the full family of sphere spectrophotometers; an agreement far superior to any ever before available. These instruments include: The Spectraflash SF600Plus and SF600Plus V Finest laboratory quality, full featured tabletop models. The Spectraflash SF300 Laboratory quality, at reduced cost and features, tabletop model. The Dataflash100 Fine quality, very small, lowest cost, tabletop model. The Microflash family of full featured quality portable models. Spectrometer The spectrometer is the most important element of any spectrophotometer, because it separates incoming light into wavelength bands and it measures the amount of light present in each. A spectrometer typically consists of the following:

Incoming light, via optics, from sample and/or reference beams. A diffraction grating, separating light by wavelength, and focusing the dispersed light on a fixed array of photodetectors. Photodetectors, sensing the amount of light, and outputting electrical currents. Amplifiers and analog to digital data processing, converting the currents to digital information for computer input.

MC-90 Spectrometer Description MC-90 spectrometer employs a unique, high technology feature that includes two diode arrays (sample and reference beams) and one grating in a single spectrometer. The design of the MC-90 is described as follows:

Incoming light, from both sample and reference beams, via optical fibers. A precision, high quality holographic diffraction grating. Two identical photodetector diode arrays (for sample and reference beams). Each consists of 128 photodiodes positioned to measure light from 380 to 720nm, at 2.7nm intervals. High precision amplifiers, data multiplexers, and an analog to digital converter.

All components securely mount in a small rugged steel assembly suitable for a portable spectrophotometer. No mechanical adjustments are necessary. MC-90 Features and Benefits The MC-90 spectrometer offers many special features and benefits; some are unique to this high technology design and are not available from any other supplier. A partial list of these features follows: A high performance capability, packaged in a small assembly, enables use in both small portable and high performance spectrophotometers. This is available only from Datacolor. By incorporating the MC-90 in the DCI spectrophotometer family, the measurement agreement among all DCI instruments is superior. No other spectrophotometer supplier can provide this feature. Both the sample and reference beam light is dispersed using a single grating. This unique feature eliminates the need to match two different gratings or otherwise compromise the performance of the dual beam drift correction function. The sample beam detector array includes 128 diodes at 2.7nm intervals for the highest wavelength scale resolution and accuracy. The reference beam array, also 128 diodes and matched to the sample array, measures at all wavelengths with perfect tracking, even as ambient temperature changes. Other suppliers often compromise wavelength resolution performance by using fewer diodes spaced at 10 (or more) nm intervals. They also often compromise the dual beam drift correction by not measuring with a full reference array.
