1. (a) A system of forces consists of


i. Force P1 = 3i + 5j – 6k acting through point (2,1,-3)
ii. Force P2 = 5i – 4j + 3k acting through point (1,4,2) and a moment
M = 20i – 35j + 60k. The forces are in Newton (N) units, distances in ‘m’ units and the moment in ‘N-m’
units. Calculate
i. The component of the resultant forces and its magnitude
ii. The total moment of the system about the origin ‘O’.
iii. The moment of the system about the line through ‘O’ drawn in the 1st octant which makes angles of
650 and 750 with X and Y axes respectively.
(b) Write the Equilibrium equations for concurrent force system in space. [12+4]
2. (a) Define the following:
i. Friction
ii. Angle of friction
iii. Limiting friction
iv. Cone of friction
(b) A ladder 5 m long and of 250 N weight is placed against a vertical wall in a position where its inclination
to the vertical is 300 . A man weighing 800 N climbs the ladder. At what position will he induce slipping?
The co-efficient of friction for both the contact surfaces of the ladder viz. with the wall and the floor is 0.2.

3. (a) Distinguish between initial tension and centrifugal tension in a belt.
(b) An open belt of width 80 mm connects a pulley of diameter 600 mm on the secondary shaft to a pulley
of diameter 400 mm on the machine shaft. The shafts are three meters apart. The secondary shaft has a
speed of 100 r.p.m. Find the maximum permissible stress in the belt if the safe working tension is 15 N/mm
width and µ = 0.3. [6+10]
4. (a) From the first principles determine product of inertia for right angle triangle of base ‘ b’ and altitude ‘ h’.
(b) State and prove transfer formula for product of inertia. [8+8]
5. (a) Define mass moment of inertia and explain Transfer formula for mass moment of inertia.
(b) Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a homogeneous sphere of radius ‘r’ and mass density ‘w’
with reference to its diameter. [8+8]
6. (a) A train is traveling at a speed of 60 km/hr. It has to slow down due to certain repair work on the track.
Hence, it moves with a constant retardation of 1 km/hrper second until its speed is reduced to 15 km/hr.
It then travels at a constant speed of for 0.25 km/hr and accelerates at 0.5 km/hr per second until its speed
once more reaches 60 km/hr. Find the delay caused.
(b) The motion of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation
s = 2t3 − 9t2 + 12t − 10 where s is expressed in metres and t in seconds. Find
i. the acceleration of the particle when the velocity is zero
ii. the position and the total distance traveled when the acceleration is zero.

7. In a mechanism, a cross-head moves in straight guide with simple harmonic motion. At distances of 125 mm
and 200 mm from its mean position, it has velocities of 6 m/sec and 3 m/sec respectively. Find the amplitude,
maximum velocity and period of vibration. If the cross-head weighs 2N, calculate the maximum force on it in
the direction of motion. [16]
8. A weight of 10N attached to a spring oscillates at a frequency of 60 oscillations per minute. If the maximum
amplitude is 30mm, find the tension induced in the spring. Also find the spring constant and the maximum
velocity in the spring. [16]

1. (a) Explain the types of friction with examples.


(b) Two equal bodies A and B of weight ‘W’ each are placed on a rough inclined plane. The bodies
are connected by a light string. If µA = 1/2 and µB = 1/3, show that the bodies will be both on
the point of motion when the plane is inclined at tan−1 (5/12). [6+10]
2. An open flat belt drive connects two parallel shafts 1200mm apart. The driving and driven shafts
rotate at 350 r.p.m and 140 r.p.m respectively and the driven pulley is 400 mm in diameter. The belt
is 5mm thick and 80mm wide. Coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.3 and maximum
permissible tension in the belting is 1.4N/mm2 . Determine.
(a) Diameter of driving pulley.
(b) Maximum power that may be transmitted by the belting and
(c) Required initial tension in the belt. Neglect centrifugal tension. [16]
3. (a) Derive an expression for ratio of tensions of a belt in standard form
(b) The centre of two pulleys of diameter 120 mm and 240 mm are 300 mm apart. They are connected
by an open belt. If the coefficient of friction for the larger pulley be 0.28, what would be its value
for the smaller pulleys simultaneously?

4. (a) Define the terms centroid, moment of inertia and radius of gyration.
(b) Compute moment of inertia of hemisphere about its diametral base of radius ‘R’. [6+10]
5. Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a cylinder length ‘l’, radius ‘r’ and density ‘w’ about
longitudinal centroidal axis and about the centroidal transverse axis. [16]
6. (a) A baloon is ascending with a velocity of 20m/s above a lake. A stone is dropped to fall from the
balloon and the sound of the splash is heard 6 seconds later. Find the height of the balloon when
the stone was dropped. Velocity of sound is 340 m/s.
(b) The acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation a = 25 − 4s2 where
‘a’ is expressed in m/sec2 and ‘s’ is position coordinate in metres. The particle starts with no
initial velocity at the position s = 0. Determine
i. the velocity when s = 3metres
ii. the position where the velocity is again zero
iii. the position where the velocity is maximum. [8+8]
7. (a) A weight of W = 10 KN, with cross sectional area of 1800 mm2 , is attached to a spring of spring
constant 0.1 KN/mm, is oscillated in water. Find the period of oscillation.
(b) A connecting rod AB makes 40 small oscillations per minute about a knife edge through the hole
at the end A. The distance of C.G. from ‘A’ is 0.45m. Find the radius of gyration of the rod
about the axis through ‘G’ parallel to the knife edge. Also find the number of oscillations per
minute which the rod will make if supported on a knife edge through the hole at ‘B’ if AB =1.5m.

1. (a) Explain the principles of operation of a screw-jack with a neat sketch.


(b) Outside diameter of a square threaded spindle of a screw Jack is 40 mm. The screw pitch is
10 mm. If the coefficient of friction between the screw and the nut is 0.15, neglecting friction
between the nut and collar, determine
i. Force required to be applied at the screw to raise a load of 2000N
ii. The efficiency of screw jack
iii. Force required to be applied at pitch radius to lower the same load of 2000 N and
iv. Efficiency while lowering the load
v. What should be the pitch for the maximum efficiency of the screw? and
vi. what should be the value of the maximum efficiency? [6+10]
2. An open belt running over two pulleys 240 mm and 600mm diameters connects two parallel shafts
3000mm apart and transmits 4KW from the smaller pulley that rotates at 300 r.p.m. Coefficient of
friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3 and the safe working tension is 10 N/mm width.
Determine :
(a) Minimum width of the belt.
(b) Initial belt tension and
(c) Length of the belt required. [16]
3. (a) Distinguish between open and crossed belt drives.
(b) A belt weighing 1000kg/m3 has a maximum permissible stress of 2.5N/mm2 Determine the
maximum power that can be transmitted by a belt of 200mm × 12mm if the ratio of the tight
side to slack side tension is 2. [6+10]
4. (a) From the first principles determine product of inertia for right angle triangle of base ‘ b’ and

5. A square prism of cross section 200mm × 200mm and height 400mm stands vertically and centrally
over a cylinder of diameter 300mm and height 500mm. Calculate the mass moment of inertia of the
composite solids about the vertical axis of symmetry if the mass density of the material is 2000kg/m3 .

ii. loaded as above.
(b) It is set into natural vibrations with amplitude of 100mm,when empty. Calculate the velocity
when its displacement is 40mm from statical equilibrium position. [16]
8. A homogeneous rectangular plate is free to rotate with respect to a fixed axis AB coinciding with
one of its edges, along the side of length b=1.25m and inclined to the vertical by an angle α = 200 .
Determine the period of small rotational oscillations if the length of the other side a=0.90m. [16]

2. A smooth circular cylinder of weight Q and radius r is supported by two semicircular cylinders each of the same
radius r and weight Q/2, as shown in Figure1. If the coefficient of static friction between the flat faces of the
semicircular cylinders and the horizontal plane on which they rest is µ = 0.5 and friction between the cylinders
themselves is neglected, determine the maximum distance b between the centers B and C for which equilibrium
will be possible without the middle cylinder touching the horizontal plane. [16]

3. An open belt connects two flat pulleys, the smaller pulley being of 400mm in diameter. The angle of lap on the
smaller pulley is 1600 and coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.25.
Which of the following alternatives would be more effective in increasing the power that could be transmitted.
(a) Increasing the intial tension by 10%,
(b) Increasing the coefficient of friction by 10% by the application of suitable dressing to the belt. [16]

5. A cylinder of diameter 400mm and height 1000mm rests vertically. Over this, a cone of base diameter 400mm
and height 500mm is placed such that the axis of the cone coincides with the axis of the cylinder. Find out the
mass moment of inertia of this composite solid about a line which passes through the vertex of the cone and
which is parallel to the base of the cylinder if the mass density is 4000kg/m3 .

6. (a) A particle is projected with a velocity of 10m/s at an angle of elevation of 600 .
Find
i. The equation of the path of motion.
ii. The length of latus rectum of the path of motion
iii. Time required to cover the range.
iv. The length of range.
(b) An electric train which starts from one station is uniformly accelerated for the first 10 seconds, during which
period it covers 150 metres. It then runs with constant speed until it is finally retarded uniformly in the
last 40 metres. Calculate the maximum speed and the time taken over the journey to the next stopping
station which is 600m form the previous station. [8+8]
7. The pendulum of an Izod impact machine has a mass of 35 Kg. Its C.G. is 1m from the axis of suspension and
the striking knife is 0.15 m below the C.G. The time for 20 small free oscillations is 43.5 sec. In making a test,
the pendulum is released from an angle of 600 to the vertical. Determine the striking velocity and the position
of the centre of percussion relative to the striking knife. [16]
8. (a) Explain how a simple pendulum differ from a compound pendulum briefly with the help of differential
mathematical equations.
(b) Determine the stiffness in N/cm of a vertical spring to which a weight of
50 N is attached and is set vibrating vertically. The weight makes 4 oscillations per second. [8+8]
