Title: Atkins To Design Waterfront Huarong Hengqin Tower In Zhuhai Location: China Architect: Atkins

Atkins has been appointed to design the Huarong Hengqin Tower in Zhuhai, China. Atkins architecture and urban design studio was selected by the developer Huarong Real Estate through a design competition, to provide an eye-catching and modern design which specifically responds to the site and the environment. This mixed-use development contains accommodation for a 5-star hotel, international grade-A offices and top brand retail facilities. It will be one of the first buildings to be constructed as part of the large masterplan for the new economic zone of Hengqin Island District. This development benefits from a prime location facing the waterfront only a few hundred metres from the worldfamous tourist Cotai strip in Macau. Atkins design director, Ian Milne, said: The towers are orientated to provide hotel guests and office users with stunning views of significant landmarks in Macau, while respecting the development potential and view corridors of adjacent sites.

As the cherry blossoms burst into bloom in Japan this spring, thirdyear architecture students at Londons Kingston University put on a spectacular display of their own with a Japanese-inspired building project. Inspired by the iconic five-arch design of the Kintaikyo Bridge in western Japan, the students recreated a 1:3 scale version of one section of the famous landmark. While the original is often photographed amid the bright spring cherry blossoms, Kingstons tribute to this early architectural enterprise captured the imagination representing the Universitys architects at the worlds largest show for sustainable design, Ecobuild, in Londons Docklands in March. In a time before mechanisation, the original Japanese craftsmen were working by hand without modern tools and techniques, architecture lecturer Takeshi Hayatsu, who has been leading the Kingston project with senior lecturer Tim Gough, said. The original 17th Century design is a great example of architectural innovation because subsequent repairs and rebuilds over the centuries enhanced and simplified the magnificent structure each time. Almost 700 metres of sustainable spruce was donated to the project by Scottish timber merchant James Jones and Sons to create the 12 metre structure. Cutting it themselves, handling the length and weight of the wood and working out the sequence of pieces have all been important parts of the learning experience, Mr Hayatsu explained. Its not just about exploring the design and the shape, its about understanding the constraints of the design too. Whats possible on paper is often just the starting point for innovation once someone starts building a structure. Located in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi prefecture in western Japan, the Kintaikyo Bridge is an arched design and because of this shape it uses less material than other constructions to span great distances. Because the small components of our bridge could be cut by hand, there is very little waste, Tim Gough explained. Architects today

need to consider their use of resources more and more, and so the students were encouraged to make their work as efficient as possible. The Japanese craftsmen worked with this ethic and it remains an important lesson for our students today. The final-year architects were given 10 days to make all the pieces in the workshops at Kingston Universitys Knights Park campus. Student Miles Borg was nominated as project manager. While we enjoyed planning our own versions of the bridge, actually getting to build one that could take the weight of people walking on it was a real challenge, the 21 year old said. Being able to throw ourselves into a project like this with a tight deadline and limited resources has really focussed our attention on problem solving. When we came across an obstacle, it was great to get the team together to work out a solution, he said. Mr Hayatsu, who is from Okayama in Japan, contacted the Kintai World Heritage organisation in Japan to let them know about his students plans to build a replica of the bridge. They supplied the students with access to their archive of historic drawings, plans and photographs to help them with their work, he explained. The original bridge is incredibly important historically, culturally and architecturally, and it is hoped the site will achieve world heritage status in the future. The Kingston University architects bridge was on show at Ecobuild at Londons Excel Centre in the Docklands from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 March. Postgraduate architecture students also exhibited their design for a new addition to the Universitys Stanley Picker Gallery made from Portuguese cork oak blocks.

Title: New York Hotel Bedroom Contract Is An American Dream For Scots Designer Location: New York Designer: Morag Macpherson

Scottish designer Morag Macpherson has won a contract, worth a five-figure sum, with the soon to be completed Union Square Hotel in Midtown New York City to design bedroom headboard panels for its 178 rooms. The innovative fabric panels will be reversible and showcase a brand new design for each season giving hotel guests a room with a breathtaking view all year round. Glasgow-born Morag designed the panels at her studio in Kircudbright, Dumfries and Galloway, for the hotel which is due to open in June this year on 4th Avenue. The panels will be printed in the UK before being manufactured in Italy. She said: The Union Square Hotel will be a contemporary and luxurious building in the heart of New York, and the owners wanted something stylish and unique to reflect this. My designs depict each season and hotel staff can change the headboard throughout the year. The panels will provide an ideal centrepiece for each room and bring together a riot of colour with overlapping patterns and motifs taken from my Masculine and Feminine in Nature collection. Morag won the contract at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in 2010, when she met Vennie Lau from VLDG Inc. (www.vldg.com) who thought her designs would be an ideal fit for the new hotel project. Cathy Black, head of textiles, Scottish Enterprise, said: It is fantastic to think that thousands of visitors to New York will soon be able to enjoy Morags creations, and it is a great advertisement for the quality of textiles talent on offer in Scotland.

Title: New 462 Home Development Bolsters Stepney Green Regeneration Location: London Developer: First Base

This week sees the completion of the first apartment, which will be used to set exemplary quality standards, in a new 70m development by East Thames Group and First Base in Stepney Green. Sandwiched between Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Limehouse, it is hoped that the new development designed by Levitt Bernstein, will help bring the area out of the shadows of its better-known neighbours. The first of the 462 homes, which will be built in three urban blocks around landscaped courtyards, are due to be available in December 2012. Almost half will be available on the open market, with the other half offered for shared ownership and affordable rent. According to East Thames director of development and asset management, Geoff Pearce: The homes are being built to the highest standard and building on the character of the area. They will be generously sized, have extensive outdoor space and exceptional fittings like quartz work tops in the kitchens. But real quality is about getting the details right good lighting, quality finishes, seamless painting and this benchmark apartment is spot on, setting the tone for the rest of the homes. First Base director Barry Jessup, commented: The area represents fantastic value for money, and is one of the last uncovered gems on the eastern fringe of the city. But its unlikely to stay that way for long. Weve seen the evolution of Shoreditch and Hackney based on both housing developments and the boom in technology and creative industries. We believe this housing development is just one of the catalysts for a similar trend in Stepney Green. Working with contractor Wates Living Space, the scheme will meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, and be built using modern construction methods to ensure the on-budget delivery of high quality homes. The scheme is being delivered as part of the wider 200m regeneration of the Ocean Estate, which is being led by the East Thames Consortium in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council. The regeneration project, which has been funded through the sale of sites for new housing and a 42m Homes and Communities Agency grant, completes in 2014. It will see over 1,200 social rented homes refurbished, 819 new homes built, and significant improvements to landscaping and community facilities in the area. East Thames is also working with its partners to offer employment, training and involvement opportunities to local residents.

Timoleon Provides The Basics For Bicton College's 'EaRTH Centre'

Bicton College, set in rural Devon yet within 20 minutes of the centre of Exeter, is one of the country's foremost land-based educational establishments. Centred in a lovely Georgian manor house overlooking a landscaped park and lake, the College boasts the very latest in facilities and equipment linked to a forward looking attitude to all aspects of agriculture and allied subjects. Their latest project is the establishment of the Environmental and Rural Technologies Hub (EaRTH), a training and conference facility demonstrating all aspects of renewable energy generation and sustainable building methods. While suitable courses are already being designed for the college's students, the further aim is to educate the wider community in 'green' methods, especially through school visits. It is expected that around 10,000 visitors will pass through the EaRTH's doors every year. The EaRTH centre, carbon neutral needless to say, has been created around two underused farm buildings on Home Farm, which is part of Bicton College. Equally naturally only renewable energy is being harnessed to provide heating and hot water for the centre and, since the comparatively low operating temperature of under-floor heating is ideal for use with renewable energy, the design team decided on the Timoleon Staple System to supply below floor warmth evenly throughout the two buildings. The Timoleon Staple System is simple and can be rapidly laid even in awkward areas as Fords of Sidmouth the local firm used for this installation, will agree. When in use, heat from the pipes is reflected upwards from the insulation sheet, optimising warmth for the room above. The Timoleon system has a surprising double life as a Surface Cooling System, a far more energy efficient alternative to air conditioning. EaRTH's buildings offer a comfortably cool atmosphere even in the hottest of summer months. When the outside

Walking Safely Above London

Bona Traffic Anti-Slip lacquer has been used to finish and protect the new wooden floors in the two aerial walkways on Tower Bridge. The finish was specified by a City of London Building Surveyor, who was looking for a highly durable finish with anti-slip properties. She explained I specified Bona Traffic Anti-Slip as events are held on both walkways and I was concerned that drink/ food spillage on the Oak floor could cause someone to slip. Stewart Taylor of the flooring contractors, Bailey & Taylor, had already recommended we use a Bona varnish and, after doing my own research, it seemed that Traffic Anti-Slip was just what we required. The walkways are used by the public in high numbers and the high durability offered by Traffic again made it ideal for this type of use. We also wanted a natural look and we were reassured that we would achieve this using Traffic. The City of London is committed to using environmentally friendly materials and Bonas green credentials confirmed our choice. The walkways had been carpeted until this year a decision was made by the Surveyors to find a floorcovering which would give a long term saving and would look more stylish. The walkways are now used as a venue for sophisticated corporate events and wedding receptions. Bailey and Taylor sourced character grade English Oak planks and recommended using a lacquer from Bonas range to deliver the required look and performance. The carpet and plywood beneath was removed to reveal rubber studded tiles which, as part of the fabric of the Tower, have to be retained. New battens, insulation board and plywood were installed and the Oak planks were then secret nailed into place with the perimeter boards being stuck down with Bonas silane based adhesive, R850. The new boards were then sanded to a 120 grit finish and one coat of Bonas Prime Classic applied. Prime Classic helps give a wooden surface a well-bodied appearance and also reduces the risk of sidebonding due to its flexibility. Finally, three coats of Traffic Anti Slip were applied according to the specification. A two component, waterborne 100% polyurethane finish, Traffic Anti Slip delivers a highly durable surface in addition to anti-slip properties conforming to DIN standard 51130 R10. All versions of Bona Traffic (Matt, Silkmatt and Anti Slip) offer the most durable finish of all Bonas lacquers and are therefore recommended for areas such as the bridge walkways where extreme resistance to wear is required. Traffic Anti Slip is supplied in a matt finish with a reflective value of just 25% which means the floor maintains a natural look even after the lacquer has been applied. A total of 480m of oak flooring was fitted in the two walkways and the job was finished four days ahead of schedule. www.bona.com

atmosphere demands it, Timoleon's sophisticated controls switch the system from heating to cooling modes. In cooling mode, cool water is circulated through the heating pipes. In this way the 'heating system' cools by absorbing radiant energy instead of emitting it. While air conditioning requires large volumes of cooled air to replace the hot air, Timoleon's Surface Cooling absorbs the sun's radiant energy before the air in the room has the chance to become unpleasantly warm. EaRTH is so well insulated and the Timoleon system so efficient, that the energy absorbed in the building is simply dissipated by a loop of 1,300 metres of polybutylene pipe in damp sand beneath the subfloor, which is well isolated from the heated area. In this way the building is cooled without the need for any refrigeration equipment. The result is a perfect indoor environment whatever the season, with reduced CO2 emissions and at a fraction of the cost. Bicton College's EaRTH centre will demonstrate energy sources that include biomass, solar PV and thermal and wind power in addition to air and ground sourced heat pumps. It will also showcase rainwater harvesting systems, grey water systems and reed bed filtration. www.timoleon.co.uk

Forbo Takes A Modular Approach To Floor Design

Forbo Flooring Systems is celebrating the benefits of modularity and encouraging customers to explore the design potential and creative freedom offered by its tile based flooring solutions. With a wider range of textile and resilient floor coverings in a convenient tile format than any other manufacturer, Forbo is keen to demonstrate how the flexibility of the modular concept can be exploited to create fully integrated and beautifully colour co-ordinated floor schemes. A modular flooring solution is ideal where the brief calls for the installation of various flooring types with different attributes. Because Forbos ranges are specifically colour co-ordinated for integration, its textile and resilient floor tiles can be mixed and matched across a floor scheme, with colours and patterns selected to blend or contrast as desired. Multiple tile sizes and formats offer even more design flexibility. Modular floor coverings are a logical choice for the modern working environment with access flooring, which has to be lifted periodically. They also allow refurbishments to be carried out with the minimum of financial outlay and fuss. Compared with floor coverings supplied in sheet format, tiles will usually generate a lot less installation waste and can generally be fitted more rapidly. They can be rotated within an area to extend the lifespan of the installation and can be replaced in isolation allowing localised damage to be rectified with minimum financial outlay. For areas of a building calling for the aesthetic appeal, warmth, acoustics and underfoot comfort of a textile floor covering, Forbo offers an exceptional range of design-led tufted and cut pile carpet tiles in its Tessera and Westbond ranges. Where the smooth appearance, hygienic properties and ease of cleaning associated with resilients are needed, Forbo offers Marmoleum tiles, Flex Design loose lay vinyl tiles and Allura LVT tiles and planks. Within these individual product ranges are aesthetic styles, colourways and technical specifications to meet all requirements. Completing the range of modular flooring solutions offered by Forbo is the Flotex tile range a truly unique range of flocked floor tiles combining the attributes of textile flooring with the benefits of a resilient. As Marketing Manager Julie Dempster explains: Modular flooring offers aesthetic, practical and economic benefits, and with the wide range of products we offer and the ingenious way in which our designers have integrated our colour palettes, the range of design possibilities for the creative specifier is infinite. www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/modularity

Dural UK Ltd, Linear Shower Drainage Systems

The Dural linear shower drainage system range includes the TI-LINE and the ultra flat BASIC-LINE. The TI-LINE is installed right alongside the wall for a flush, floor-level shower. This means that there are no details to spoil the overall impression of a level floor and no trip hazards when taking a shower. Installing the drainage channel alongside the wall means the shower floor only needs to have a gradient in one direction meaning there is no need for complex diagonal cuts on tiled or natural stone floors. TI-LINE consists solely of four components and can be combined to fit any situation. Large quantities of water can flow away quickly- and all to one side. The BASIC-LINE is a solution for a barrier free shower and does not have to be fitted along side the shower wall. The ultra-flat drainage channel is only 55 mm high and is a considerable breakthrough in the design of shower floors with a low installation height. The special features of this Dural innovation include a remarkable drainage capacity of 0.58 l/s (DN 40) and a double safe odour-proof cover. BASIC-LINE proves its worth as a fast and straightforward drainage solution for tiled floorlevel showers. Eight different visible length dimensions from 300 to 1150 mm with a frame height of 11 mm cater for differing individual wishes and structural requirements. The 60 mm wide drainage channel with a stainless steel designer grate is of high quality and is pleasant to the touch when barefoot. Title: New Clinic Opens In East Yorkshire Constructed Using A Highly Sustainable Recycled Modular Building Location: Cottingham, East Yorkshire Application: Relocatable Building Systems Visit: www.foremansbuildings.info

A new health centre has opened in the East Riding of Yorkshire, constructed using a highly sustainable recycled modular building from Foremans Relocatable Building Systems. Designed by architects Gelder and Kitchen, the new purpose-designed centre was craned into position in just eight hours over a weekend. The single storey building has been clad in brickwork to complement its location in the historic village of Cottingham a conservation area. Since closure of the clinic following the major floods in 2007, health services have been temporarily provided at other locations in the area. The new centre has brought a range of community services under one roof again, including podiatry; consultation, examination and treatment facilities; hearing aid services; child health clinics, and community dental services. Commenting on the project, Stephen Dale, Capital Projects Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust, said This is a fantastic building, delivered on time, cost and quality. Foremans performance was excellent throughout and the construction and fitting out phases went very smoothly. We had a good relationship with their team, who were happy to go the extra mile to meet our specific requirements. Speed of delivery was important to enable us to re-provide clinical services locally as quickly as possible. The use of a recycled building structure also made our budgets go further, providing excellent value, as well as having a number of strong environmental benefits. Henry Chadwick, Partner at architects, Gelder and Kitchen, added, We are impressed with the finish and the space the modular approach has created

internally. It is spacious and open. You would never know this was a modular building or indeed a recycled building. The installation was very professional and efficient and the finished scheme sits well in its landscape. This is a really good building, successfully delivered to a tight budget. All Foremans recycled modular buildings are fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, M&E services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high quality accommodation for a wide variety of permanent and interim applications. The recycling and refurbishment of relocatable buildings is also highly sustainable, helping to improve a buildings carbon footprint: The approach produces less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions compared to a newly manufactured building (source: MPBA). Because much of the refurbishment work takes place off site, the approach generates fewer vehicle movements to site than traditional building methods, reducing congestion and carbon emissions. By refurbishing the building modules and preserving the embodied energy of the steel structure, Foremans is extending the life of the building and minimising the volume of waste sent to landfill.

Title: Yorkon Completes 50Th Modular Petrol Filling Station Kiosk For Tesco And Achieves A Rating For Energy Efficiency Location: Leigh in the North West Application: Modular Petrol Filling Station (PFS) Building Visit: www.yorkon.info

Off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has completed another milestone for Tesco its 50th modular petrol filling station (PFS) building for the global retailer. Since Yorkon completed its first petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco near Gretna Green in Scotland, the modular design has been engineered to accommodate larger chillers, a toilet with disabled access, and continuous glazing to maximise views from the till positions across the forecourt. Yorkons 50th petrol filling station kiosk for Tesco was located at Leigh in the North West and was completed as part of a major new store development. The project was also the first application of Tescos latest kiosk design and successfully achieved an EPC energy efficiency rating of A. New developments to the store design include reduced column sizes to improve visibility of the petrol pumps, disabled access, different configurations of shelving and partitions, and energy efficient lighting and refrigeration. The modular building at Leigh was craned into position in just one day. All plumbing, electrics, partitions, sanitary ware, counter, tobacco gantry, flooring and kitchen were preinstalled off site at the Yorkon production centre in York, reducing time on site to just four days. Other recent petrol filling station projects undertaken by Yorkon for Tesco include Northcott in Northern Ireland, Ystradgynlais in South Wales and in Devon, Humberside, Cheshire, the Midlands, Cleveland and Falkirk in Scotland. Commenting on the project at Leigh, Richard Jackson, Tesco PFS Operations Manager for the UK and Ireland, said, The Leigh PFS is a good example of just what can be achieved with off-site construction. It looks fantastic and the team there are really proud of their new facility. It is a first class petrol filling station bright modern and functional, helping to reaffirm our position as a world class fuel retailer. Simon Ambler, Director of Yorkon added, We are delighted to have completed our 50th PFS project for Tesco. This partnership is the result of a long-term commitment and a process of continuous development on the part of both organisations, ensuring Tesco and its customers receive the very highest standards of quality, service and value every time. Petrol filling stations are highly constrained sites that require specialist ground works for the forecourt. By using an off-site solution for the building, work on site is reduced and there is much less disruption. Tesco is the largest independent fuel retailer in the UK, serving over 4.5 million motorists every week. Leigh PFS is the 459th Tesco petrol filling station. Tesco PFS kiosks offer a range of convenience products at supermarket prices to help cut the cost of recharging fuel levels on a journey. Yorkon is the UKs market leader in off-site construction solutions for the retail sector, and has worked with Tesco for over a decade. It has delivered more than 220 modular building projects for the food retailer from convenience and petrol filling station stores to award-winning 10,000sqft interim supermarkets and a 28,000sqft eco-store. Yorkon is part of the Portakabin Group.

Title: The New Hartlepool College One Of The Largest Uk Applications Of Wicona Roof Glazing Location: Hartlepool College of Further Education Application: Roof Glazing Visit: www.wicona.co.uk

One of the largest UK applications of Wiconas Wictec 50 aluminium roof glazing system has been completed at the new 53m Hartlepool College of Further Education. This striking college campus was designed by Bond Bryan Architects and built by Miller Construction. The scheme comprises two blocks which are linked by a full height atrium created with Wicona roof glazing and forming the main entrance and circulation space. The central atrium has a complex fan-shaped roof which uses faceted glazing that radiates outwards and follows the curve of the building. The roof glazing system is sufficiently robust to carry large unsupported spans of glass up to 2.3m wide 6mm solar control toughened glass for the outer pane with up to 8.8mm clear laminated inner panes. Two mono-pitch glazed roofs with a 15 incline were specified for the north and east wings, with automated roof lights to the vertical areas to provide natural ventilation when needed. Commenting on the roof glazing, Bobby Simpson, Faade and Cladding Inspector at Miller Construction, said, The Wicona roof glazing is well designed with effective drainage, and is a dry system so it is not affected by poor weather conditions during installation a bonus for UK installation. We used the system for the Hartlepool project, and have been very pleased with the results. It came together well on site, was user friendly, and simple to install all key considerations for our project teams. The installation phase went well, and the system has achieved an impressive faceted roof design that provides a dramatic top to a central atrium as well as some large areas of sloped glazing. Adam Jones, Associate at Bond Bryan Architects, said, The roof glazing on this project is extremely effective. The fabrication was to a high standard and the fanned effect above the central core provides a powerful feature, bringing a lovely quality of light into the space. The new Hartlepool College of Further Education provides workshops and technical training centres for building services, aerospace, construction, mechanical and electrical engineering and motor vehicles. Other facilities include high quality conference facilities, a fitness suite, restaurant, and hair and beauty salons which are accessible to the public. The Wicona roof glazing system has been used extensively internationally on a wide range of technically challenging projects and is now available in the UK and Ireland. It has been engineered to use penetrating transoms to achieve more efficient drainage and avoid pooling of water which can result in water ingress. Other features of the system include: Simple to fabricate and install, saving time on site Engineered for the creation of large unsupported spans Sufficiently robust to meet specific project requirements for glazed roofs such as wind and snow loads A dry glazed system which will achieve water tightness without any reliance on sealants Fire rating to 30 minutes with the Wictec 50 FP option Structural glazing option to give the appearance of uninterrupted spans of glass The option of integrated flush pressure plates for further aesthetic appeal. With more than two decades of experience in complex and bespoke aluminium faades and 10 years on-site experience in the UK, Wicona offers a range of technically advanced faade systems which now includes unitised and stick curtain walling, structural and roof glazing, highly insulated window systems and heavy duty doors. Title: Khrs Extends Eco-Commitment With World First Floors Using FSC-Fairtrade Certified Wood Application: FSC-Fairtrade certified wood Visit: www.kahrs.co.uk

St Ethelburgas Centre for Reconciliation and Peace is a multi-faith centre for reflection, hospitality and peace; amidst the hustle and bustle of the City of London. Since being destroyed by IRA bombing in 1993, a huge amount of work has been carried out on the building - resulting in a reinstatement of the medieval exterior; juxtaposed with a stunning modern interior space. Cantifix completed work at St Ethelburgas in 2011, in conjunction with WK Architecture. A striking structurally glazed enclosure was designed to form an internal lobby; with structurally bonded joins and a sleek Pureglaze door for access. The centre staff wanted to quieten down the noise of Bishopsgate and maintain the peaceful atmosphere - without losing any of the medieval-style internal or external features. This internal glass enclosure was the perfect solution providing an acoustic and thermal barrier without masking the traditional arched door, or blocking any natural light. The Pureglaze door provides access without disrupting the overall effect of the lobby with any visible framing. The finished project is a stunning addition to this much-loved historical building. Cantifix has wide experience in joining new structures to old buildings, and looks forward to getting involved in more restoration projects this year.

Sky's The Limit For CA Group As Innovative Curved Roof Is Unveiled

CA Group has unveiled the unique curved roof system design that it has developed for Prologis. The new roof system has been used for the first time at the new BMW Group (UK) Ltd distribution facility at Prologis Park, Pineham, in Northampton. The design incorporates CA Group's Twin-Therm technology, a fully-walkable cost effective solution which provides a high degree of flexibility and exceptional air tightness levels. Twin-Therm is delivered as a carbon neutral envelope and uses man-made mineral fibre insulation, which is non-flammable. The system also successfully addresses the issue of water ingress. As a result it offers a leak-free roofing solution. The solution also eliminates the need for standing seam and secret fix roof options, which translates into a significant cost reduction to the scheme. In plane rooflights are retained and the cost effectiveness of the external profile adds tremendous value to the overall delivery team. Clarity is critical regarding the frame design and the roof itself and CA worked closely with the steelwork contractor to deliver a successful result. The ability to retain glassfibre insulation in the specification ensures that the roof complies with the recent report published by UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) relating to insulation choice and the impact which some insulations are still having on the ozone layer. Furthermore at the end of the building's life the building owner will not be faced with any unforeseen disposal costs. CA Group worked with Tata Steel on the project to provide its Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra in Goosewing Grey and Colorcoat Prisma in Alaska Grey, Oyster and White. Exclusively manufactured by Tata Steel, both Colorcoat products have the unique Galvalloy metallic coating for exceptional corrosion resistance and cut edge protection, resulting in a Confidex Guarantee for up to 40 years. www.helifix.co.uk

The New Innovative Lightweight Interlocking Roof Tile - Envirotile

The demand for sustainable building products worldwide continues to grow. The Green Roof Tile Company have developed and manufacture a unique, lightweight, interlocking roof tile called Envirotile which is 70% made of re-processed polymers reliably resourced and won the 2011 Lord Stafford Award For Sustainability. Each tile weighs 730g so not only making it very easy to lift onto roofs as each tile is 80% lighter than traditional concrete tiles, but also transportation costs are reduced. Envirotile can also be made in any colour. Trevor Wakefield the inventor of Envirotile came up with the idea whilst on holiday in Cornwall a few years ago. Whilst walking along the beach and seeing the amount of plastic rubbish that was washed up Trevor a roofer for many years thought there must be a use for disposed plastic and the idea of the Envirotile was born. As each tile can interlock with up to 8 other tiles, Envirotile can withstand 110mph driven rain with no loss of integrity, dislodgement or breakages; in fact when Envirotile was tested at the Building Research Establishment the inspectors remarked that the Envirotile was the best roof tile system they had ever tested. www.greenrooftilecompany.co.uk

Imperial Purple Is The Colour On Trend

Be bold with mosaic colour this season, says Italian glass tiles specialist Trend, suggesting that purple is now becoming chic in interior design. Having talked to architects, designers and tiling retailers across the country, UK sales director Tom Anderson finds renewed enthusiasm for the purple spectrum, inspired perhaps by recent, dramatic glass mosaic designs like Trends Liberty Purple, which expresses the colour in an irregular palette of plum, aubergine, lavender and amethyst. Purple is not a safe colour like neutral creams, browns and greys, it is a bold statement that expresses confidence, style, even opulence, says Tom. It is the traditional colour of wealth and status. Its the mark of royalty and Roman emperors, which is why it is known as imperial purple. It is deep and rich, combining the coolness of blue with the hotness of red, and in the hands of the right designer can make strong, sophisticated decorative statements. Scattered amongst the 250 pages of Trends lavish online catalogue, viewable at www.trend-gb.com, fashionable shades of purple can be found permeating the entire collection. The classic 2 x 2 cm tile format [from 49 per square metre] offers iridescent purple, plum and violet Shining tiles, tonal veins of enamel and aventurina in Brillante and plainer semi-transparent mosaics in the Vitreo range. The 1.5 x 1.5 cm range [from 120 psm] extends choice in the purple spectrum to opaque glass Lux in plain shades and the opulence of Shining, created with semiprecious metal solutions in molten glass. Smaller yet, the 1 x 1 mini mosaic tiles [from 51 psm] allow for more intricate dcor panels and borders, using tiny Brillante 1 x 1 designs in varying shades of purple. Offered in 2 x 2 and 1 x 1 formats, the Aureo Lucio Orsoni designer collection [from 85p per piece] includes violet-tinted 24 carat gold mosaics; while white gold, yellow gold and platinum white tiles from the precious Modern Aureo and Traditional Aureo selections [from 65p per piece] will reflect and enhance purple hues. Trends full-bodied Karma glass mosaic [from 220 psm] is additionally available in plain and multi-coloured purple stained glass effects, in a whole variety of hand-cut formats and sizes. Karmas depth of colour and irregular shapes are exploited in Trends distinctive Liberty collection [from 230 psm], designed in collaboration with Italian artist Giulio Candussio. His use of different tile shapes and sizes, with straight and sinuous lines, is perfectly expressed in Liberty Purple, which is presented in irregular film-faced modules measuring approximately 26cm x 31cm. Further preformatted studio designs with purple notes can be found in Trends Miscele [from 90 psm] and Shading Blends [from 133 psm], featuring square format glass tiles in colour-coordinated designs. Mixes like Calycanthus, Happyness and Sensitivity display varying strengths of purple, while the Lavender shading blend graduates visually from near white to deep purple. For the most dramatic decorative statements, Trends exclusive Wallpaper collection [from 180 psm] features the repeat pattern structure of paper or silk wallcoverings, but has the textural and hardwearing appeal of Italian glass mosaics. There are a number of purple-hued Wallpaper patterns, such as the abstract Grand, classic Floral and labyrinthine Glorious designs, and the tiles are pre-grouted and mounted on a polyethylene mattress system for quick and easy installation. Finally, for countertops, floor tiling, panelling and other hardwearing exterior and interior finishes, there are Trend Agglomerates [from 188 psm]to continue the purple dcor theme. Variously made from Italian granite, quartz or recycled glass blended with polymers, these surfaces are heat, stain, scratch and impact resistant and available in a wide choice of tile, plank and slab formats. www.trend-gb.com

Be Gas Safe with Timloc Access Panels Access Covers On The Waterfront
The multi-million pound National Waterfront Museum in Swansea is one of the top attractions in Wales, taking visitors on a historical journey through the industrial revolution, looking at the impact it had on the nation and its people. On opening in October 2005, the museum won a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award for its high architectural standards which were thanks in part, to Howe Greens floor access covers which were purpose designed for installation throughout the museum. Hundreds of metres of aluminium floor covers cross and intersect throughout the impressive Grade II listed building and its new glass extension, providing quick, easy and safe access to concealed mechanical and electrical equipment. With more than 250,000 visitors to the museum each year, Howe Green installed its 7500 series floor covers which provide a heavy duty and tamperresistant access solution that is both practical for the heavy pedestrian traffic, and aesthetically pleasing, making it ideal for the public facing location in the museum. Running across the reception areas, displays and exhibits, slim line aluminium showedges present clean and crisp geometry within the many different types of floor covering used throughout the building. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively, the covers are double-sealed and corrosion and maintenance free to meet the highest standards of hygiene and security. Circular Access Solutions An Emerging Trend The technical team at Howe Green has witnessed a rise in demand for circular covers in recent months. IntaEcos Penny Saving Innovation

Inta has introduced an innovative new tap with energy saving technology, a feature that limits the release of hot water while simultaneously reducing expense. When the handle on the Verso Eco tap is in the central position, the mixer supplies only cold water to the valve, instead of the usual combination of both hot and cold. Cynthia Fisher, director at Inta, explains: When a tap is turned on the user rarely waits for it to run hot. However, the water is still heated and supplied to the valve but remains unused and is left to cool - wasting both money and energy. Versos unique design and features instantly cancel out this regular wastage. Users are forced to make a conscious effort to push the handle further for hot water, preventing it being unnecessarily supplied to the valve. www.intatec.co.uk

Decorative Column Casings Practicality And Style

Decorative column casings have come a long way since they were first used to conceal interior structural steelwork more than 25 years ago. From their initial specification by a handful of architects they are now widely used on buildings of all types, from schools, leisure, retail and office buildings to hotels, hospitals and care homes. For Peterborough based decorative casings and protection specialist, Encasement Ltd, fulfilling these needs has become second nature. The companys range is now the most comprehensive available in the UK and not only includes casings manufactured from preformed plywood or glass reinforced gypsum (GRG) for interior applications, but also glass reinforced polymer (GRP), aluminium and stainless steel casings, designed for use in both interior and exterior projects. Key projects, such as a prestige reception area at Paddington Basins Merchant Square in, West London and a new library extension at a private school near Richmond, illustrate the versatility of Forma metal column casing solutions. At Merchant Square, the column casings are finished in brushed stainless steel and are 800mm diameter, while the casings used on library project are six metres high and integrate with a glazed floor and stainless steel balustrade. Forma casings have also been used to great aesthetic effect at a recent project in Brighton, where Brighton & Hove Council chose aluminium casings to not only conceal structural columns, but also form part of an integrated circular seating arrangement at a new five storey customer services centre. Bright colours have been used throughout the centres interior design and the column casings are finished in blue polyester powder coated (PPC), which contrasts with the bright green seating and interior dcor to help guide visitors to the correct area. Encasements pre-formed plywood Circa and Quadra column casings also provide specifiers and contractors with an exceptionally wide range of finish options, including plain, laminated or real wood veneers. Both products are also available manufactured from FSC certified plywood, to assist specifiers and contractors comply with sustainability codes and environmental procurement policies. Circa casings, finished in a brushed aluminium Formica DecoMetal laminate, have been used to conceal structural columns as part of the multi-million refurbishment and upgrading of Gateshead International Stadium. Sixteen 350mm diameter casings were both supplied and installed by Encasement, six of which stand seven metres high and span the full height of the two-storey building. Plywood casings are also a regular choice for retail environments and Encasements Circa and Quadra casings have been used at a recent 66 million development, which forms part of Blackburn and Darwen Borough Councils town centre regeneration project. In addition to concealing 50 structural steel columns at Blackburns new indoor market, the 12 mm thick casings, some of which stand five metres high, also hide perimeter building services and act as a location for mounting fire alarm actuators and interior safety lighting. The healthcare sector is also a major user of Encasements column casings and Blackpools innovative Moor Park Health Centre is an ideal example, where a unique seven metre high Polyma GRP elliptical casing is a key feature in the main entrance foyer. Finished in a high gloss white gelcoat, the custom made casing is extremely durable and resistant to damage, yet provides a striking aesthetic feature to health centres spacious reception area. www.encasement.co.uk

New Sleep Space Bed System Offers Multifunctional Living Areas

Architects can now offer their clients two rooms for the price of one and add value to the property at the same time. Sleep Space is a brand new electro mechanical bed system which effectively doubles the available living space. Just the touch of a button will transform any area into a comfortable bedroom. Moreover, since house prices are based on the number of bedrooms, specifying Sleep Space can also improve your clients Loan To Value ratio. Sleep Space uses a simple, efficient, electronic steel cable pulley system which means that costs can be kept down without compromising quality or safety. Since no counterbalance is necessary, neither is a structural survey and the system can be fitted to brick, stone or stud walls. One of the most attractive features of Sleep Space is its simplicity and virtual invisibility. DuPont Building Innovations Achieves Zero Landfill Status

DuPont has achieved zero landfill status in its Building Innovations business by reducing, reusing and recycling manufacturing byproducts and waste at manufacturing sites globally. After three years of focused effort, DuPont Building Innovations has become completely landfill-free, reducing its environmental footprint from 36 740 tons of landfill waste annually to zero. Now, through the Drive to Zero landfill program, none of the waste generated by the business from the manufacture of DuPont Corian solid surfaces, DuPont Tyvek high-performance breather building membranes, DuPont Typar and DuPont Plantex geosynthetic textiles and other products is sent to landfills. The Drive to Zero landfill program is good for our business, good for the environment and highly valued by our customers - Working with our supply chain partners to tackle the zero landfill goal was critical to the success of our business in reducing its environmental footprint. Collaborating with our business partners allowed us to succeed in reaching our ambitious project goal of zero landfill, said Timothy P. McCann, president of DuPont Building Innovations. By completely eliminating landfill - not just reducing it - DuPont Building Innovations has created a new standard for environmental stewardship. The Drive to Zero project was comprehensive in other ways, too. Manufacturing byproducts, unusable raw materials, product scrap, construction debris and even cafeteria waste were all within scope at the projects 15 global manufacturing and partner sites. Today, material that previously may have been destined for a landfill is being reused or recycled. Some examples: - sanding waste from the manufacture of DuPont Corian is used as a filler replacement in concrete; - ground-up scrap of DuPont Corian sheet is used as recycled content in first grade products; - crushed scrap of DuPont Corian is sold for use as road sub-base material and as landscape stone; - DuPont Tyvek wrap and flashing manufacturing trim is recycled into first-grade material; - shipping pallets are repaired, reused, or ground into animal bedding; - carrier belt film is melted and used to make adhesives; - cafeteria waste is recycled into worm bedding or converted into energy. The Drive to Zero landfill project was particularly unique in that it included third-party partner sites, where products are often made for other companies. This meant that the project team had to manage the challenge of eliminating all unrelated product manufacturing landfill waste. DuPont Building Innovations brings dynamic science to the discovery and development of innovative products and services for residential and commercial construction. DuPont one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals more than 20 years ago has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research and development investment. The goals are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for key global markets. About DuPont Building Innovations - From innovative energy-saving systems to beautiful and long-lasting surfacing solutions, the extensive offering of DuPont Building Innovations delivers safety, durability, beauty and energy efficiency, providing a major contribution to the modern built environment - across the spectrum of building and architecture, to roads, bridges and other infrastructure and also to landscaping and gardens. The main products and brands managed by DuPont Building Innovations are DuPont Corian, DuPont Tyvek, DuPont Typar and DuPont Plantex. DuPont (NYSE: DD) has been bringing world-class science and engineering to the global marketplace in the form of innovative products, materials, and services since 1802. The company believes that by collaborating with customers, governments, NGOs, and thought leaders we can help find solutions to such global challenges as providing enough healthy food for people everywhere, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, and protecting life and the environment. www.dupont.com

Remmers Drive The Corrosion Away At Eastgate Car Park

Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness houses a car park with 1350 spaces. CCCP were the onsite consultant engineers who tested the car park structure for levels of chlorides in the concrete and created the project specification which recommended the use of Remmers MCI and Remmers Betofix concrete repair systems. Essential works were then carried out to protect the embedded steel reinforcement. Finally a bonding bridge was applied and a new fibre reinforced slab was laid to protect the concrete from any further damage. Other concrete repairs were also carried out to the base slab, soffits and columns and all works were successfully completed with minimum disruption. www.remmers.co.uk

Sika In Comedy Carpet Roll Out

Self compacting concrete containing Sika admixtures played an important role in the production of Comedy Carpet, located on the Tower Headland at the foot of Blackpool Tower. The 2,200 square metre concrete artwork, which was commissioned by Blackpool Council, features gags, catchphrases and names of more than 1,000 comedians. Comprising 235 cast concrete panels, the piece by Gordon Young, includes over 160,000 letters cut from solid red and black granite and specially created cobalt blue concrete. The 30mm deep letters were cast into high quality concrete panels. The letters were laid out in a mould, and cast in a white, hardwearing grout to form the visual layer when completed and turned over. A reinforced concrete base layer was then added. To avoid disturbing the mosaic of letters, it was necessary for this base layer to be cast without added vibration to consolidate the concrete. To achieve this, self compacting concrete supplied was chosen. This concrete mix, containing specially adapted Sika ViscoCrete superplasticisers, produces unique fluidity and inherent compactibility. Once completed and laid in place on the headland, the carpet was ground, polished and sealed. Concrete admixture, Sika Control 40 was also contained in the mix to greatly reduce any shrinkage during curing of the concrete. www.sikaconcreteadmixtures.co.uk

Important Technical Announcement From Hauraton

The European Water Framework Directive requires Authorities to manage water resources better and clean-up storm water commonly polluted with hydrocarbons, de-icing salt and heavy metals such as Copper and Zinc, before it enters a local watercourse, surrounding land or catchment area. The Hauraton DRAINFIX CLEAN filter-bed drainage channel system is designed to directly cleanse polluted storm water. Pollutants, particles and organic matter from the surrounding drained surface, wash into the channel system, penetrate the CARBOTEC 60 filter-bed and begin to form a filter cake. As the filter medium continues to mature, microorganisms and small creatures invade and start a soil forming process; this absorbs the captured pollutants and speeds their break down. The channels are sized for this stage of the cycle, providing sufficient water retention volume to ensure there is no back-pressure or overflow of the system. Extensive independent testing has shown surface pollutants naturally attached themselves to very fine particles and when it rains, these particles are washed into the drainage system. The tests found very little of this polluted material was removed by separators or retention systems; the DRAINFIX CLEAN channels incorporating a filter-bed, was the only system that worked effectively over a long period, removing most of the main pollutants found in storm water run-off. A DRAINFIX CLEAN samples pack and explanatory leaflet is now available from Hauraton, with an online video demonstrating the effectiveness of the system via www.hauraton.co.uk select SERVICE then click PRODUCT VIDEOS.

Arch Timber Protections KEYWOOD Treated Pine Specified for Decking Around Swimming Pond for Zero Carbon House
Arch Timber Protections KEYWOOD treated pine has been chosen by landscape designer Alistair W Baldwin to be part of a site landscaping project on the grounds of a zero carbon house near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The project uses the durable timber in decking around a swimming pond installed by Garden Style of Sheffield. KEYWOOD is a modified softwood created by treating FSCcertified Radiata pine with a biomass-based thermosetting resin. This makes the timber more durable and usable indoors and outdoors without the need for a coating, and its attractive light color blends with all surroundings. Designer Alistair W Baldwin said: The KEYWOOD product is based on pine, so it is easy to work with, but it has the look of a more exotic hardwood. As a designer, I am very attracted to its pale coloring when dry and its rich warm tones when wet. The flexibility to specify the boards at the width we needed was also a plus, as we were running the boards up to stone slabs to create a staggered junction. The site is in the open countryside, so it was important that the deck took on an attractive weathered look from day one, and the KEYWOOD treatment was perfect for that. www.archtp.com

THE BOOK/DOORS, WINDOWS & GLAZING

Technals New Low Rise Faade System Used For Inspirational Special School In Hampshire
One of the first applications of the latest aluminium glazing system from Technal is a visionary new primary school in Hampshire for children with learning difficulties. The revolutionary MODAL low rise faade system was specified for Forest Park School near Southampton. Designed by Hampshire County Councils in-house architects and constructed by Morgan Sindall in a 8.9m contract, the new building has created an inspirational, child-centred facility which is set to transform special school provision in Hampshire. The school is a collection of low rise buildings interlinked by a series of canopies and arranged around a number of courtyards. The outer walls are constructed of brick with inner faades of dark timber and glass, and a combination of dual and mono-pitched zinc roofs. The sites landscaping was inspired by the heathland that characterises much of the New Forest National Park. Glazing fabricator Solaglas installed Technals MODAL low rise faade system extensively throughout. Finished in dark brown with contrasting bronze doors, MODAL is used as fixed light glazing and with FXi65 windows. Sound attenuated louvres provide additional natural ventilation, and the GXi sliding patio door, which is fully integrated with MODAL, was also specified, together with Technals CD commercial door. MODAL is a rapid-build low rise faade system and the first in the UK to offer integral opening vents. It has an innovative modular design, which gives specifiers a much wider choice of configuration options. Nicky Dando, Head Teacher at Forest Park School said, We are delighted with all aspects of the new building, including the glazing. All visitors have commented on how light and airy the building feels. Commenting on the specification of MODAL, the project architect at Hampshire County Council said, One of the key design objectives for this project was to maximise natural light and views out onto the landscaped areas, helping us to extend the building into the external play spaces. This is a sustainable building so we also needed to provide a good level of natural ventilation. The MODAL system could incorporate both louvres for passive ventilation and integrated windows. He added, We are very pleased with the finished building which is performing to a high standard and has been very well received by the children, staff and parents. The new school, which has been created following the amalgamation of two existing schools, provides accommodation for 72 children with special educational needs, aged between two and 11 years. Facilities include a library, IT suite, hydrotherapy pool, hall, childrens kitchen for cookery activities, therapy room, office, dining room, soft play room, light room, specialist art room and extensive external play areas. The scheme is targeted to achieve a BREEAM very good rating and has a number of sustainability features to minimise its impact on the environment such as solar thermal panels to assist in providing hot water for the hydrotherapy pool, combined heat and power system, high levels of natural ventilation and highly glazed elevations to maximise natural light. The buildings are also orientated to minimise solar gain and improve cross ventilation, reducing the reliance on mechanical ventilation. Wrightstyle Supplies To New Town Project In Hong Kong

A UK steel glazing company has supplied to a prestigious HK $500 million (40.7 million) mixed-use development in Hong Kong. Wrightstyle, the Devizes- based specialist supplier of advanced glazing systems, has supplied a range of internal and external elements for a newlycompleted residential and sports centre in the Tseung Kwan O district of the city. The company was specified for the Hang Hau project by the Architectural Services Department (ASD) of the Hong Kong government. The contractor was China State Construction International Holdings Limited, the largest construction contractor in Hong Kong. Tseung Kwan O is one of nine new towns in Hong Kong, with a planned population of some 450,000 people, much of it built on reclaimed land. The Hang Hau centre, due to fully open next month (March), is a key community element for the new town. Wrightstyle supplied various glazed components, including two-hour glassto-glass internal screens, 60/60 rated internal and external screens, door systems and a large number of non-rated large-span roof-lights. The company has become internationally-recognised for the design, supply and installation of steel glazing systems to mitigate against the full range of natural or man-made threats, including fire and terrorist attack, or severe wind loading. Wrightstyle has supplied to a number of projects in Hong Kong in recent years, including new educational and health facilities, and carried out sitespecific fire testing on behalf of the ASD for a strategic transport interchange between the New Territories and Hong Kong itself. Wrightstyle was also a supplier to the HK $3.1 billion Langham Place development, a milestone in urban renewal in Hong Kong, and which includes a 53-storey office tower, a 5-star hotel with 665 bedrooms and rooftop swimming pool as well as a 600,000 sq ft shopping mall with 300 shops. Underlining the structural performance of its systems, Wrightstyle was also specified for HSBCs high-security central data centre in Hong Kong,

a highly-sensitive hub for the Banks operations, and the first data centre in Hong Kong to meet the industrys most stringent reliability and security requirements. The project had to meet strict criteria for both blast performance and, in a typhoon region, severe wind loading. Wrightstyle designs and supplies both the glass and steel framing systems in one integrated and guaranteed assembly, with fire and other test certification to EU, US and Far Eastern standards, in both Hong Kong and Singapore. Additionally, Wrightstyle offers a fabrication service at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, with the further UK option of using local installers who have been trained by Wrightstyles in-house specialists, and who have full access to Wrightstyles technical support team. The company is currently completing Olympic and other projects in the UK with further international contracts underway in Malta, Abu Dhabi and Qatar, underlining the specialist nature of steel glazing and the importance of specifying both the glass and steel elements as one integrated unit. www.wrightstyle.co.uk

Article By: AET Title: Commercial Sector Warms To Solar Thermal Innovation Author: Glan Blake-Thomas, Managing Director

Glan Blake-Thomas, Managing Director at AET, the supplier of the Camel Solar range of panels and collectors into the UK market, explains how new, aesthetically attractive and energy efficient designs open up fresh installation opportunities for building services contractors. Sunshine is free. It does not have to be purchased, mined, refined, imported or transported. Which is why, with the cost of fossil fuels rising rapidly and with business operating margins becoming ever tighter, building owners and occupiers are now giving serious consideration to solar thermal systems for commercial applications. Solar thermal systems use specially designed solar collectors to harvest heat from the sun for use in both space and water heating applications. Typically, these can include copper and aluminium flat plate collectors, copper and aluminium faade collectors and evacuated tube collectors for large scale applications where a premium performance is required. Whatever the type of collector installed, solar thermal systems generally work by storing the heated water in an insulated storage vessel which is usually connected to a boiler or which contains an electric immersion heater to supplement the collectors output at times of high space heating or water demand. Until recently, the majority of solar thermal systems were limited to small domestic applications in the UK. However, stricter planning rules, which require new commercial buildings to meet up to 20% of their energy demands from renewable sources (commonly called the Merton Rule) have seen the number of commercial solar applications start to increase. This is because, unlike many other renewable technologies, solar thermal is a proven and durable technology which is cost effective to install for the majority of commercial applications. Improvements in collector efficiency and the recent introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, under which the government will
064 ISSUE 2 2012

pay a tariff for each kWh of energy generated by a renewable technology, will lead to further increases in both new build and retrofit applications. The use of renewable technologies is also being driven by businesses wanting to be seen to be green in response to increased public awareness of environmental issues. In addition, a solar thermal installation will also save on the amount of carbon taxes paid by larger organisations under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. Because solar thermal technology is so simple and reliable, it is suitable for a wide variety of commercial applications. However, it is particularly relevant for businesses that use a high volume of hot water such as hospitals, hotels, breweries, dairies and public and private swimming pools. In the Middle East and southern Europe, solar thermal systems have even been linked to absorption chillers to provide chilled water using heat from the sun; it is a perfect synergy of technologies - the hotter the sun, the more cooling that can be produced. In the northern hemisphere, the optimum performance of a solar thermal collector will occur when the unit faces due south. However, the efficiency of sleek, modern collectors will ensure that installations facing south east, south west, or those which are even orientated westward can provide a meaningful energy input. Until now, collectors have often been mounted on a buildings roof or on an adjacent patch of ground. However, the decision of where to site a solar array has become a lot easier with the recent development of solar thermal collectors specifically designed to be integrated into a buildings faade. Faade mounted collectors, such as AETs Copper FAADE and Aluminium FAADE, are particularly suitable for applications where there is insufficient space on a buildings roof or where the roof is shaded by adjacent buildings, or even for applications where a roof faces north, away from the sun. In addition, the collectors are ideal for buildings with flat roofs in areas where planning rules or aesthetic demands preclude a roof-top installation. Both conventional and faade type solar thermal collectors can supply up

to 60% of a buildings heat demand over a year. Solar irradiation in a UK winter is about 30% of its summertime peak. Even so, with a suitably sized array hot water can still be generated. It is not unusual for water to be heated to 60C in October and November, for example, helping reduce carbon emissions. We have recently completed a study on the feasibility of solar thermal applications in the UK. It found that for a school using 4000 litres of hot water a day, a solar thermal solution would save approximately 45,000kWh of energy with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions of roughly 10 tonnes. From a financial perspective this will shave around 3000 from the schools gas energy bill each year and possibly 5 times that if electricity was the energy source. For large scale consumers, like hotels, where hot water consumption can be up to 10-20 times this

amount, the story becomes even more powerful as the savings will have a significant impact on the bottom line. Based on this study, AET has calculated that energy savings coupled with government payments under the Renewable Heat Incentive will give a return on investment for a solar thermal installation of approximately 7 -8 years. However, with energy costs set to rise in the near future that payback period is likely to reduce still further. All of which serves as proof that there has never been a better time to consider a solar thermal installation.

allocated to the hallways, stairways and other common areas. Clearly, an eight-zone panel would be used for a similar property with up to seven apartments. While it wont show which individual detector has been operated, this arrangement will show in which apartment the actuation has taken place and, in some systems, it will also show whether the actuation originates from an automatic detector or a manual call point. Advanced twowire systems can go even further by offering the option to respond differently to signals from alarm devices based on their type and location. For example, in our apartment block, consider the benefits of the following set-up option; a fire signal from a manual call point or automatic detector in a common area can be arranged to instantly trigger sounders and beacons throughout the entire premises, whereas a fire signal from an automatic detector in one of the apartments can be arranged to initially trigger the sounders and beacons in that apartment only. If, however, the fire signal from the apartment persists for, say, one minute, the alarm is raised throughout the premises. This arrangement is useful as a fire signal from a single apartment may well mean nothing more than someone has burnt their toast, in which case raising a general alarm is unnecessary and disruptive. This complies fully with Part 1 and Part 6 of British Standard BS5839.

Its also worth noting that the detectors used in two-wire systems are by no means all the same. The most useful are types with both smoke and heat sensors. In most instances, a combination of heat and smoke detection will give the optimum balance between fast response to a real fire and freedom from false alarms. However, there are locations where it is preferable to reduce the influence or even disable one or other of the detection functions, and good detectors will allow the installer to do this. Hopefully this short article has shown that, in all but the very simplest and most complex of fire protection installations, the two-wire option offers the best value for money. These types of systems make it easier for contractors to win more contracts and improve profits, while at the same time gaining satisfied customers! To receive a free pocket guide on installing two-wire systems which are fully compliant with BS5839 standards, please email karen.evans@fike. com, or visit www.fikesafetytechnology.co.uk/twinflex.html to download a pdf version.

In this price sensitive market, it is so important to choose a fire protection system that combines reliability and versatility with economy. Alan Locke of Fike Safety Technology provides some useful guidelines. A common assumption among specifiers and even some contractors is that fire protection systems are divided into two major groups conventional and addressable. With conventional systems, a simple control panel is used, and the fire detectors are connected to this via one or more circuits, depending on the size and complexity of the installation. Separate circuits are used to connect the sounders and beacons to the control panel. Conventional systems are usually assumed to be the most suitable and most cost-effective option for small to medium-sized applications, such as small apartment blocks and houses of multiple occupation. This assumption is often incorrect, however, as we shall see shortly. Addressable systems are considerably more complex. They use detectors that send digital data over the circuit to the control panel, which means that they can provide detailed information about the location of the fire. This is a crucial benefit in a large installation like an office block or a major retail site, but much less important in small installations where the site of the fire will either be readily apparent or easy to locate. Generally speaking,

addressable systems are an unnecessarily complex and expensive choice for smaller installations. It would seem therefore, that for small and mediumsized installations, conventional systems are the way to go. However, there is a third option, which is all too often overlooked. This is the two-wire or bi-wire system. The components for two-wire fire alarm systems cost only a little more than those for conventional systems, but there are big savings to be made on installation costs. Two-wire systems use simple inexpensive cabling and the detectors, manual call points, sounders and beacons all share the same cable. The result is that the overall cost of a two-wire installation is almost invariably lower than that of a conventional system for the same application. Additionally, depending on the equipment chosen, the two-wire system is likely to offer valuable increased functionality. For specifiers, installers and end users alike, therefore, two-wire systems are a very attractive option. But what can be expected of a two-wire system? First of all, control panels are typically available with two, four or eight zones. A four-zone panel is a good choice, for example, in an apartment block with three apartments, since each apartment can have its own zone, while the fourth zone is

Redland PV Fixings Designed To Meet MCS012 Standard

DECC has published the long-awaited Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) 012 standard for the fixing of solar panels on roofs in the UK just days before Redland launched its new MCS 012 compliant fixing hook for Solar PV panels. Redlands new hook is designed so that fewer are needed for an installation compared with rival manufacturers. The dramatic increase in the number of solar (particularly on-top Solar PV) systems since the introduction of the Feed In Tariff in 2010 has led to an increase in the number of leaking roofs. The problem was clearly associated with the fixings being used: in many cases these were proving inadequate to the challenges posed by the weather patterns of the UK. MCS 012, published on 16 March 2012, adds additional requirements for MCS-certified solar PV (and solar thermal) systems, in particular their mounting kits. www.redland.co.uk

Schuecos New Prosol TF+ Thin-Film PV Is 30% More Efficient

In April 2012, a new brilliant-look, up-rated version of ProSol TF known as ProSol TF+, will be available from Schueco UK Limited. Designed as a BIPV product, ProSol TF+ is an advanced, higherefficiency thin-film PV module that produces a 30% increase in electrical output over conventional photovoltaic thin-film products. The module's superior performance typically 80 Wp/m2 is the result of a tandem cell structure that incorporates dual layers of microcrystalline and amorphous silicon, together with a special laminate foil (PVB). As well as generating electricity, ProSol TF+ can act both as insulation and as solar shading. In appearance, the new ProSol TF+ is also strikingly different thanks to its new, deep anthracite colouring and the fact that, in addition to a standard rectangle, the modules can, for the first time, be specified in a variety of alternative shapes including triangles, parallelograms and rhomboids. This greatly extends the system's design possibilities for architects. ProSol TF+ is an exceptionally 'green' product containing none of the rare or toxic materials such as cadmium, selenium or lead that are found in some PV systems. In addition to supplying the ProSol TF+ modules, Schueco UK provides the complete PV solution comprising either a cladding system or an insulated faade system together with all necessary electrical components including inverters, cabling and connectors. www.schueco.com

Aquatiere Has The Soft Touch

The Aquatiere No Scale saltless water softener is steadily making its mark amongst architects and specifiers. Recently installed at the National Railway Museum and on North Sea Oil Rigs, the innovative softener is proving invaluable where avoiding the need for the provision of salt and ongoing maintenance is an effective method to reduce costs. A conventional salt based softener can waste up to 180,000 litres of water over a few years. The Aquatiere No Scale softener uses Template Assisted Crysalisation to change the limescale in the water to microcopic crystals of magnesium and calcium which in there natural seperated state, do not form hard scale. The unit is simply fitted onto the incoming water main and requires no power, no drain and no seperate drinking water tap. 20/40/60 litre per minute versions are available from stock, other sizes can be made to order. www.aquatiere.co.uk

New Solar Thermal Evacuated Tube Collector From AET

AET has launched the Camel Solar Vacuum (CSV), a high efficiency evacuated-tube solar thermal collector to harvest energy from the sun for commercial hot water and space heating applications. Using state-ofthe-art technology, the CSV has been developed to absorb over 92% of the suns energy landing on the collector. This makes it one of the most efficient solar collectors on the market with a stagnation temperature of 250oC and one of the most economical ways to generate renewable energy. The advantage of the CSV over other types of solar collector is that the units evacuated tubes enable the collector to work effectively even during the coldest winter months. The CSV forms part of AETs extensive range of Camel Solar commercial products, which includes copper and aluminium flat plate collectors, copper and aluminium faade collectors. www.camel-solar.com www.flexiblespace.com

THE BOOK/ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

THE BOOK/ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

Fit For Purpose

Chris Monson of Trend Controls explains why having the foresight to specify and install a building energy management system (BEMS) at the construction phase will ensure long-term savings for occupants and reduce the burden imposed by environmental legislation. Its a sad fact of life that despite the various initiatives and drives towards greater energy efficiency within buildings, too few developers recognise the long-term value of installing a fully featured building energy management system (BEMS) at the construction stage. BEMS facilitate greater energy efficiency and the cost savings and environmental benefits that can be experienced as a result of investment in this technology are considerable. A fully integrated solution can have up to 84 per cent of a buildings energy consuming devices directly under its control, offering greater visibility of energy use by monitoring services such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting. As buildings become more intelligent and fully networked via structured cabling, the scope to include even more services is eminently feasible. So why isnt the design and installation of a fully featured BEMS happening as a matter of course? The easy answer is a combination of cost and lack of foresight. Developers tend to fall into two broad groups there are those that configure buildings for others to inhabit and there are those who design and build premises for their own use. For the former group the main driver is to save costs at the construction phase and therefore little thought is given to the buildings future occupants and how they use the building and the energy consumed in doing so. As there are no regulations stating that a BEMS must be installed, theres a strong possibility that it wont be. However, this lack of forward thinking leads to future occupants having to cope with inadequate visibility and control of their energy usage and, therefore, higher overheads and a larger carbon footprint. When it comes to the second group, the lack of a BEMS often comes down to the failure of owners to specify their needs at procurement stage and make sure that they have systems in place that will maximise the potential of the building. While this type of developer will also have one eye on the cost of the project, the increased capital costs of installing an energy management system is easily countered by the return on investment, with an average simple payback of typically 3years. Implementing a full BEMS in a new build can form less than one per cent of the total construction expenditure and energy savings of 10-20 per cent can be achieved when compared to controlling each aspect of a buildings infrastructure separately. Incorporated with smart metering. it will also enable those responsible for operating buildings to incorporate factors such as tariff changes in to a strategic approach to energy management and control. 23 per cent of a buildings energy is used in lighting, and it is estimated that around a third of the energy consumed for lighting in non-domestic buildings could be saved by utilising technology that automatically turns off the lights when space is unoccupied. In addition, of the 57 per cent of energy used in heating and ventilating buildings some areas are still being heated and cooled when vacant, wasting even more energy. By applying a range of control and monitoring initiatives building services can operate in strict accordance with demands and prevailing conditions, thereby avoiding unnecessary use of energy. The data produced allows building managers to better analyse, understand and improve their site's energy usage and costs by having them presented in an organised and informative way with clear signposts for improvements. For the owner/occupier of a new build property not to go down the route of specifying a BEMS in the current business climate borders on foolhardiness. Organisations are faced with growing pressure to demonstrate carbon reduction policies and although small scale measures such as low energy lighting and solar photovoltaic energy should not be dismissed, they do not get to the heart of the matter. Despite the controversy that greeted the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC), it is here to stay and is likely to extend its scope to incorporate more businesses in the future. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme isnt the only driver for energy reduction though. The Climate Change Levy (CCL), Air Conditioning Assessments, Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) also affect businesses, while compliance with voluntary certification standards such as ISO 50001 put the onus on companies to address energy use and carbon reduction. Energy management isnt a niche interest building occupiers are now demanding greater visibility and transparency of their energy consumption and need access to energy data. Building managers are looking for more sophisticated applications to help analyse and manage their infrastructure and demand platforms that can handle broader integration of other building systems. There are those who feel that regulations are the only way to make sure that BEMS are installed at the point of initial construction, although others are reluctant to see the introduction of more onerous restrictions on an already pressured construction sector. The point is that regulation shouldnt be necessary if a long-term approach to energy efficiency is factored in and the benefits of a BEMS in being able to achieve savings are considered. www.trendcontrols.com

NIBE Exhaust Air System Heats Hollies

Hollies is a large Redrow Development in a rural setting that justifies the name at Hartford near Northwich. Six flats within the site are owned by Muir Housing Association, a leading social landlord in the North of England. The site does credit to both companies reputation for sympathetic design which includes six two bedroomed shared ownership apartments each with its own kitchen area and bathroom. One of the many attractive features of the development is that the water heating and radiator fed central heating for each apartment comes from an innovative Exhaust Air Heat Pump powered by a F205 heat pump supplied by NIBE Energy Systems and installed by MB Heating of Wigan. Exhaust Air heating really is like grabbing energy out of thin air for the system is based on harnessing the heat already created by family living, then recycling its energy before it is expelled into the outside atmosphere in the course of normal ventilation. In Hollies Farm, ventilation input is from vents situated in the diningand bedroom walls and the warmed air is subsequently gathered at ceiling height in the kitchen and bathroom. The energy then passes to the F205 unit, one of NIBEs new generation of heat pumps, where it is treated to a highly sophisticated heat exchange process that greatly increases the temperature by compression before passing the energy through to heat the water stored in the super insulated stainless steel cylinder incorporated in the unit. So efficient is the heat extraction process that the exhaust air is eventually expelled at a temperature close to freezing point, with the beneficial side effect of cutting emissions of carbon and noxious gases to a very minimum. The F205, despite containing the storage cylinder, all appropriate pumps and an easily read and understood control panel, is surprisingly slim-lined and the pleasantly styled unit is easily concealed in a cupboard in kitchen, bathroom or utility room. www.nibe.co.uk

Potatoes Stay Cool With Kingspan Powerpanel

The owners of Lavenham Fen Farm in Cambridgeshire have installed the Kingspans Roof PowerPanel Modules to slash bills from the farms two potato storage buildings. The buildings, separately housing standard and organic potatoes, require large amounts of energy to power internal cooling systems, keeping harvested potatoes at a constant low temperature. With electricity usage metered at half-hourly rates, this previously resulted in massive energy bills for the farm owners. To tackle these costs, the farm owners used investment from Regenerco to help fund the purchase and installation of Kingspans PowerPanel and Safetraxx systems. The PowerPanel array, installed on the roofs of the storage buildings, comprises one thousand, five hundred and one, 235Wp Yingli crystalline PV modules and can produce an overall output of 352.7kWp. Kingspan Roof PowerPanel Modules are capable of producing electricity even in low light or overcast conditions and can enhance the asset value and rental potential of properties. The PowerPanel system at Lavenham Fen Farm has been registered and accredited under the FiT scheme. www.kingspanpowerpanel.com

Kidde At The Lancasters

Kidde Fyrnetics Slick smoke and heat alarms provide discreet fire safety measures integrated with interior design for a major development of luxury apartments overlooking Londons Hyde Park. The Lancasters was originally an elegant parade of magnificent stucco-fronted houses built in the mid 19th Century. The interior fabric was so badly damaged by the buildings 1970's conversion to a hotel that the internal structure was completely renewed. At the same time, the listed frontage of one of the longest and tallest Victorian residential terraces was retained and restored. Smoke and heat alarms were selected to minimise impact on the carefully designed interiors and to match developer Northacres aim of providing a unique fusion of traditional architecture with brand new design and cutting edge technology. With a matching family appearance, Slick interconnectable, optical and ionisation smoke alarms and heat alarms are circular in shape to avoid alignment problems. Integral rechargeable lithium batteries provide 6 months continuous backup in the event of mains failure. For major developers, third party certification is essential, particularly in such a critical area as fire safety, and Slick is still the only range of fast-fit rechargeable smoke and heat alarms guaranteed for 10 years. www.smoke-alarms.co.uk

Superior Air Tightness for Newbury Parkway

H+Hs Standard Grade 440 x 215 x 100mm and 140mm thick 3.6N aircrete blocks have been installed at the Newbury Parkway Shopping Centre, providing a robust shell in a mix of solid, single skin and cavity walls. Situated in Berkshire and designed by BDP architects, the retail park forms part of a new town centre for the local community. H+H blocks were used due to aircretes inherent qualities as a material. Chris Hernon, leading project architect explains: Primarily, H+H blocks were specified for their light weight qualities and for their ability to make a building with very low air leakage. Air tightness tests results achieved 1.11 W/m2K. Aircrete produces far superior results to concrete as an additional painted coating would be required to improve the overall air tightness, something we did not need to do. Site Manager at Newbury Parkway, Ian Bleach of Lee Marley Brickwork adds: This has been my first experience of using H+H blocks on this type of project and I would definitely use them again. We find that Celcon Blocks are easier to use than concrete as each aircete block weighs far less than equivalents. The light weight quality of Celcon Blocks means that a greater quantity can be loaded to the working area including the scaffold. Other advantages are that the operatives do not tire out as easily. www.hhcelcon.co.uk

University Of Reading Gets New Music Department

Originally owned by the Palmer family, of Huntley & Palmers biscuit fame, the land and buildings at Readings London Road were gifted to the University of Reading at the turn of the twentieth century. The focal point of the property is the magnificent Victorian cloistered Great Hall set within landscaped grounds, providing the perfect setting for student Graduation ceremonies and live performances by national choirs and orchestras. Reduced use over the last few years has seen a deterioration in the Cloister buildings. Since the injection of a 21m budget, these buildings have been refurbished to create a new home for the Universitys Institute of Education, with dedicated spaces for the teaching of subjects such as Music, Drama, Languages and The Institute of Educations unique programme in Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies (TAEDS). It was important to retain many of the Cloister buildings original features, including a mixture of curved and sash windows, all of which were single-glazed. This presented a particular problem for the 2-storey Music Department which accommodates a mixture of studios, practice rooms and recording facilities and enhanced levels of soundproofing for both noise egress and ingress were essential. Main Contractor, Wates Construction, consulted secondary glazing specialist Selectaglaze Ltd. who have significant experience in dealing with acoustic problems and had previously worked with Wates on a major sound insulation scheme for the Symphony Hall at Birmingham Town Hall. The windows have been treated with hinged casements incorporating twin memory compression seals, multipoint locking and a 6.4mm laminated glass to ensure the best acoustic performance. Flush hinges and flush locks fitted with escutcheon plates provide clean lines and minimal dust ledges. The installation has also markedly reduced drafts and general heat loss through the window ensuring comfortable conditions for practicing musicians. Typically, single glazed windows reduce noise by just 25-30dB, less if they are ill fitting and laboratory tests show that Selectaglaze secondary glazing can improve this to approximately 40-45dB depending on the distance between the glass. As can be seen at the University of Reading, purpose designed secondary glazing can be unobtrusive and sympathetic to the character of a building, whilst still allowing full access to the windows. Factory assembly allows installation to be rapidly completed with minimal disruption to the buildings occupants. As well as its acoustic advantage, secondary glazing raises the thermal efficiency of the window and improves security. Selectaglaze offers a range of products accredited to Secured by Design accredited. Selectaglaze has produced an extensive range of literature - including Data Sheets and Test Results - all of which are free upon request from: 01727 837271 email enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or via their comprehensive website www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Riverside Building Structurally Secured In Cambridge

Situated adjacent to the River Cam in Cambridge, The Old Warehouse in Bridge Street required major structural stabilisation as its west elevation, which was built off the river wall, was separating from the main structure. To secure the building and prevent further structural movement, the consulting engineers for the project, Hannah-Reed, specified a combination of systems from masonry repair specialist, Helifix Ltd. As The Old Warehouse is registered as a Building of Local Interest it required concealed repairs. Although external access was restricted by the river, the three storey timber framed brick clad building was undergoing a total refurbishment and conversion to student accommodation for St Johns College so internal working was not a problem. To restore structural integrity to the building, Helifix Approved Installer, Smith Building Services of Kings Lynn, undertook the necessary repairs. Reinforced masonry ring beams were created at ground and first floor levels using Helibeam system which involved bonding stainless steel HeliBars into channelled out mortar beds across the west elevation and returned along the north and south elevations. The vertical cracks were stitched were the elevations were separating and the river wall was tied to the ground floor concrete slab with bonded HeliBars. Horizontal stabilisation was completed by driving helical BowTies into internal first floor timber joists before bonding their out ends into the masonry walls. With the concealed repairs completed, The Old Warehouse is now fully secured with any future movement of the west elevation towards the River Cam being prevented. www.helifix.co.uk

Bespoke VMZINC For Londons Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a national museum housing 25 galleries of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain, a world class armoury and one of London's most important Rococo collections. Working with John OConnell Architects and Purcell Miller Tritton a new roof over the east galleries has provided the opportunity to return ceilings to their former classical design, elegancy and glory. VMZINC supplied cast zinc bullseye dormer windows which were designed to enhance the classical appearance of the roof and to accommodate ventilation outlets. A pre-weathered Quartz-zinc standing seam covering was also selected to break up the surface of the upper slopes. Skylights were fitted at the ridge and above a traditional slate Mansard roof with lightwell projections also clad in zinc to provide an unobtrusive blend within the roofscape. There was historical precedent for using zinc and Quartz-zinc was chosen for its traditional, lasting appearance and muted grey colour which is similar to that of leadwork. It blends well with natural slate and a variety of other building materials, particularly brick and stone, a factor which has led to its widespread use throughout Europe. Zincs malleability was ideal for the intricate bullseye dormer detailing while the low maintenance, long life expectancy and overall sustainability were also major factors influencing material selection. www.vmzinc.co.uk

The hall features four vehicle lanes which are each fitted with an external roller shutter door for security, a high speed door at the lane entrance for odour control and heat retention and a further internal high speed door installed at the end of each lane giving access to the collection hopper. The doors operate via induction loops set into the concrete floor and are interlinked via a bespoke master interface control system which ensures that only one door opens at a time helping to keep noise, odour and heatloss at a minimum. Each high speed door is fitted with aluminium bottom edge profile making them suitable for high wind loading and an optical safety bottom edge. Gilgen also provided steel personnel doors fitted with external digital access control for safe emergency exit together with everyday secure access. www.gilgendoorsystems.co.uk

Refurbishing With Daylight Tolent Commence Work On UKs First Zero-Cost Energy Park
Tolent Construction have commenced work on the UKs first zero-cost energy park as the building contractors for Armstrong Point, a 2.7m industrial development in Wigan featuring pioneering eco-friendly design. Aided by the European Regional Development Fund, the cutting-edge project from developer Armstrong Properties comprises nine business units offering lowand zero-carbon technologies that mean tenants will not have to pay any energy costs. Working with consulting engineers Bailey Johnson Hayes and the project management team at Carbon Consultancy Company, Tolent are now building 2,095 square metres of business space on the former Britvic factory site at Swan Lane, Hindley Green, with completion scheduled for September 2012. When completed the development is expected to attain an Outstanding BREEAM rating. Designed by architects Jennings Design Associates, Armstrong Point features three steel-frame industrial buildings, each capable of subdivision into three individual business units ranging in size from 125 to 300 square metres. One of the units will incorporate a demonstration centre which Armstrong Properties managing director, Dave Armstrong, says will help enlighten businesses, schools, colleges and domestic homes all about energy efficiency, waste management and renewable technologies. New proposals to cut carbon emissions in new and existing buildings were announced in February by Communities Minister Andrew Stunell. They form part of a consultation on changes to the Building Regulations regime, which aim to pave the way for all non-domestic buildings to be zero-carbon by 2019, making Armstrong Point well ahead of time. www.tolent.co.uk

One of the most dramatic Kalwall projects in Europe is part of the conversion of old railway maintenance buildings in Antwerp. The brief for architects Verdickt &Verdickt was to use as much as possible of the original to create a major leisure complex. This was to include a large new sports hall within the existing footprint, formed by retaining the gable walls and with a totally new structure behind connected to the main complex. Maximum natural daylighting with minimum energy loss has been achieved by cloaking the envelope entirely with translucent Kalwall. This highly insulating system comprises a very large pitched roof, supported by laminated timber trusses, together with vertical clerestories at each end and along the long side elevation. Internally, the other long side forms an upper level viewing gallery. When lit up at night, the building exudes an ethereal glow. Kalwall is the most highly insulating diffuse light transmitting cladding and sky lighting system available. It is designed to transmit "museumquality" light, flooding an interior with natural diffused daylight without glare or the harsh contrasts of light and shade. Running costs are reduced because of the superior insulation which reduces a building energy running costs including less reliance on artificial lighting. www.stoakes.co.uk

Arch Goes Back To School

Arch Timber Protection is back at school, this time protecting the children and staff at the new-build Highfields and Penn Fields School, in Penn in Wolverhampton. The timber cladding on the outside of the school has been treated with NON-COM Exterior fire retardant, which defends the new campus against fire without affecting the look and strength of the wood. The cladding uses 80m3 of Siberian larch, and has been chosen by the architect to be a feature of the new project. NON-COM Exterior uses an approved leach-resistant, polymer-based formulation and is applied by vacuumpressure impregnation, ensuring a long term built-in fire protection. The battens supporting the cladding were also NON-COM Exterior treated to provide a complete fire retardant protection. The site, which combines Highfields Science Specialist School and Penn Fields Special School, is due to open in September 2012. The two schools are housed in separate wings but share communal sports facilities, and the campus also includes a community cafe. www.archtp.com

House Of SmartPly
O2i design consultants were asked by their client, an international artist, to make almost every visible interior surface of their two barn conversions in Somerset, exposed OSB. The project was recently completed, and 15mm tongue & groove SmartPly OSB is without question the material of choice. the building contractor to scribe the sheets of SmartPly around existing beams and structures without too much difficulty. The 15mm tongue and groove panels also matched up neatly without leaving unsightly gaps. The OSB finish has given the space a warm, natural and serene feel, very much in keeping with the beautiful rural surroundings, added Pyle, who said that she would consider using it in a similar context in future projects. OSB is a flexible, warm, natural and sustainable product. The possibilities are endless. The building has high levels of thermal performance through insulation and glazing and airtightness, as well as incorporating energyefficient fittings and appliances. High levels of insulation, including sheeps wool were used in the roof and the large areas of south facing glazing of 1.1W/m2K U-value allow some solar gain. The front of the building is fitted with sliding oak shutters, which control solar gain by shading the space. SmartPly OSB 3 the only commercially available OSB manufactured using zero added formaldehyde in the UK and Ireland. Being owned by Coillte, the Irish forestry and forest products company, SmartPly is able to use Coiltes FSC certified forest resources to make their products with security of supply. The unique properties of SmartPly OSB have led to it being been approved in the general construction sector as a sustainable alternative to plywood. www.smartply.com

The Transformation Of Harpurhey Baths

Bathers once flocked to enjoy the waters at Harpurhey Baths, north Manchester, but the Grade 2 listed building, designed by Henry Price, suffered years of decay and was boarded up in 2001. The womens pool and laundry were incorporated into MANCATs sixth form college and community library, and MANCAT later merged with City College to become The Manchester College. Restoration of the first-class male pool included a major upgrade to the roof lantern and a new sprung floor over the pool to create a Theatre and Exhibition Hall. Walker Simpson Architects specified electrically operated blinds to the continuous central roof and CBS installed 16 of their System 8/140 motorised blinds with all the blinds on each elevation operating together as a group. The blinds stack neatly on the cills and run up unobtrusive guide cables to the apex. This was a challenging project for CBS, operating 8 metres above the floor level to fit blinds to a structure over one hundred years old. The System 8/140 blind from CBS is designed for sloping or horizontal glazing and requires no relief rollers or intermediate support which makes it very unobtrusive. Stainless steel cables guide the blind on its travel and keep the fabric taut at all times. www.cbsblinds.co.uk

After discussions with the architect, contractor Cann Building Services Ltd and the local building control department, SmartPly OSB was specified because of its zero added formaldehyde and environmental credentials, as well as its local availability. Samples were supplied and tested for suitability of use and acceptability by the Building Control Department who, with requirements for an appropriate intumescent fire retardant, agreed and was satisfied. The project involved the conversion of two Somerset barns into an open plan workshop and living space and now virtually the entire interior is dedicated to SmartPly OSB. The timber panel sits comfortably with the existing timber roof structure, and now forms the walls, ceilings, sub-floors, reveals for windows and roof lights, frames and doors for the kitchen units and bench seating, doors, door linings and stops, sliding wardrobe doors, balustrade panels, shelving, TV cabinet, and boxing and battens. Even the stair treads are three layers of SmartPly bonded together. Underneath the OSB wall surfaces the contractor developed his own OSB eco-batten to replace solid timber, comprising 50x15mm and 50x30mm bonded OSB. The client wanted to retain the unique pattern of the OSB so the panels have been stained and varnished and finished with a clear, water-based fire retardant. Andrea Pyle of O2i Design said, The client was keen that the finish should not alter the OSBs appearance. The smooth finish and high grade enabled
