International Account FAQ

Open An Account
Who can open an international account? If you are a citizen of mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong and are currently living in those areas, you can open an international account. If you are on a short-term stay or trip to the U.S., you can also go to our local branch to apply for an international account. However, if you have lived in the U.S. for 183 days or more during the current year, you are not eligible to apply for an international account; F, J, M, Q visa holders are eligible to apply. I am a U.S. resident; can I open a joint account with my relatives in mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong? No, Scottrade international accounts are only open to mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong citizens who live in those regions. How do I apply for an international account? 1. Fill out the forms and prepare the requested documents Non-U.S. Person Brokerage Account Application (completed and signed within 90 days) W-8BEN Form (applicable to non-US person, completed and signed within 90 days) Client proof of identity documents: submit two preferred documents, one of which must be a valid passport or a copy of a photo ID i) If the address on the preferred documents differs from the one on the Brokerage Account Application, you must submit an alternative document that includes your current address. If you submit only one preferred document, you must submit two additional alternative documents. The address on at least one of the two alternative documents should match the address on the Brokerage Account Application.

2. Submit the completed application You can fax or email all documents to Scottrade Asia-Pacific Services Department for review, in order to avoid a delay due to incomplete data.

After successful completion of documentation and file checking, we will activate the account and send notification of your account number. To complete the account opening procedures, mail the original form and a photocopy to the address below as soon as possible (Account transactions are not allowed before the Form W-8BEN original copy is received). 3. Fund your account Funds must be deposited within one month after the account is opened. Minimum initial deposit: $ 500 for cash account, $ 2,000 for margin account. Please refer to the answer of How can I deposit funds in my Scottrade account? question below in the Fund Deposit and Request section. What is the minimum deposit required to open an international account? The minimum initial deposit for a cash account is $500; the minimum initial deposit for a margin account is $2,000 or negotiable securities of equivalent value. What types of international accounts are offered by Scottrade? Scottrade currently offers individual accounts and joint accounts, including cash or margin services. Corporate accounts are currently not eligible for an international account. How do I transfer accounts from other U.S. brokerage firms to Scottrade? You can transfer stocks and cash from other U.S. brokerage firms to Scottrade by filling out the Account Transfer Form, attaching the most recent monthly statement, and mailing these files to Scottrade. Scottrade will complete the transfer, so you will not need to worry about contacting other firms. The time needed to complete the transfer varies for different companies, but typically requires 1 to 4 weeks (mutual funds cannot be transferred into Scottrade international accounts). Scottrade will reimburse the account transfer fees up to $100 charged by another broker when you transfer your account with a value of $10,000 or more to Scottrade. You must apply for the fee reimbursement offer by completing and submitting a Scottrade Account Transfer Reimbursement Request form and a statement providing proof of imposed transfer fees. Account Transfer Reimbursement Request forms and proof of transfer fees can be mailed, faxed or personally delivered to your local Scottrade branch office. Reimbursement will be made to your account via a credit within 30 days of receipt of the Account Transfer Reimbursement Request form and proof of transfer fees. The transfer reimbursement does not currently have a termination date. However, Scottrade

reserves the right to terminate this offer at any time without prior notice or extend the offer at its sole discretion. Void where prohibited. W-8BEN
What is Form W-8BEN? This form is for non-U.S. residents to use when reporting to the IRS for income tax relief. If your country of residence is a mutual tax relief country of the U.S., you may qualify for tax reduction or exemption eligibility. Please go to the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/ to learn more. Form W-8BEN does not apply to: Non-U.S. residents who lived in the U.S. 183 days or more during the year, but F, J, M, Q visa holders are exceptions. U.S. citizens, permanent residents or U.S. tax law defined foreign residents. Individuals who declare tax relief under an economic and trade exchange relationship with United States. Fund Deposit and Request


How much time do I have to deposit funds after opening an account? Funds must be deposited within one month after the account is opened, or your account will be closed. If you are unable to deposit funds within a month, please contact Scottrade before the deadline to ask to keep the account open. Once the account is closed, you will have to apply for a new account if you still wish to be with Scottrade. How can I deposit funds in my Scottrade account?

Log into your Scottrade account, click on the My Account tab, and then choose Deposit on the left side of the menu. It is a fast and safe way to electronically transfer your funds from your checking or savings account to your Scottrade account. You need: A. Your account number of your U.S. bank B. Your 9-digit ABA number of your U.S. bank account, displayed on the bottom of your check.

Can I deposit third-party checks into my Scottrade account? Yes, but that person must be a Scottrade client and complete the Letter of Authorization to Deposit. I have already deposited funds in my Scottrade account, when will they be available? If you use domestic wire transfer, the funds will typically be available 24 hours after your transfer; if you use international wire transfer, the funds will typically be available 48 hours after your transfer (it might take more time under special circumstances). If you deposit checks, funds will usually be available immediately. However, if the deposit amount is greater than the available equity*, or if it is your first deposit to a new account, funds will be available in three business days. Please note that the check must be cleared though a U.S. bank, with ABA routing and account numbers. If you use Money Direct to make your deposit, funds can be used to trade marginable stocks above $3 on the same day. If you plan to purchase stocks under $3, you will have to wait for three business days. If you deposit a cashiers check, you can use the funds on the same day as the funds are displayed, regardless of the deposit amount. *Available equity is the total value of cash and/or securities in the account, excluding options positions and deposits with trading restrictions in effect. How do I request funds? Check request: please complete the Non-U.S. Person Brokerage Account Fund Request Form, check Check Request, and fax to the Asia Pacific Department. Scottrade will mail the check to the address listed on the form within 24 hours after confirmation. Wire request: please complete the Non-U.S. Person Brokerage Account Fund Request Form, check Wire Request, and fax to the Asia Pacific Department. We need you to provide your bank information in the form, including: bank name, bank address, bank phone number, bank ABA or SWIFT code, and your account name and number. Scottrade will wire the requested amount within 24 hours after confirmation. When requesting funds, can I make the check payable to others, or can I wire funds to another persons account?

No, check requests can only be payable to the account owner and be mailed to the address listed on your account. In addition, funds can only be wired to the account holders bank account. The total value of my international account exceeds $5,000. Can I apply for a checkbook? Sorry, but we currently do not provide international account checkbook service. I am an authorized agent. Can I request funds on behalf of the account owner? An authorized agent can request checks on behalf of the account owner. Please complete the Non-U.S. Person Brokerage Account Fund Request Form and check Check Request. Checks will only be issued in the name and sent to the address on the account. If making a wire transfer request, the account owner must complete the Non-U.S. Person Brokerage Account Fund Request Form and check Wire Request. An authorized agent may not ask for a wire transfer on behalf of the account owner.

Account and Trade


Can I ask my friend or relative to trade securities and exchange for me? Yes, you must fill out and include your agent in the "Trading Authorization" and send it to Scottrade. If the authorized agent lives in the United States, he or she must provide a social security number. If the authorized agent does not have a social security number, he or she must attach a valid copy of personal ID documents (driver's license or passport) and a proof of home address (recent bank statement or utilities bill within one year). If the authorized agent does not currently live in the United States, the trading authorization certification must be notarized, and a photocopy of a valid personal documents and proof of address must be provided. Does Scottrade charge non-U.S. residents differently from U.S. residents? No, the fees & commissions for international accounts are exactly the same as those charged for domestic accounts. Am I required to pay U.S. taxes on my Scottrade international account? According to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Instructions, foreign investors who have completed Form W-8BEN and confirmed their foreign taxpayer identification are able to

request an exemption in the U.S. stock capital gains and interest income withholding tax, however the withholding tax from cash dividends cannot be waived. The tax rate of cash dividends depends on the tax treaty terms between your country of residence and the United States; currently it is 10% in China, 30% in Taiwan, and 30% in Hong Kong. In addition, each year we will provide the 1042-S-forms to international account holders so that clients can use it to report the tax to their local government. Does

Scottrade accept restricted stocks? Can Scottrade help me with the process of releasing my restricted stocks? Scottrade does not accept restricted stocks, nor help clients release restricted stocks. Stocks that are to be deposited into a Scottrade account must be unrestricted and free to trade in the U.S. market.

used to live in the U.S, but I moved to another country. Can I convert my Scottrade domestic account to an international account? If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident on a short-term vacation or working in another country and still own your U.S. address, you can keep your domestic account. If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have moved to mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong for a long-term stay as a citizen of one of the areas above, your Scottrade U.S. domestic account will have to be converted to an international account. You will need to complete an authorization letter and transfer assets from your original account to the international account.

Can I keep my international account? No, you must open a U.S. domestic account at your local branch, complete the letter of authorization to transfer assets from your international account to your U.S. domestic account, and then close your international account.
