President's Message:
Just a quick overview of the May 22nd meeting: We went over the assignments for the then upcoming Florham Park show. The high point of the evening was the sale of our new club tee shirts. We sold almost $700.00 worth of shirts and ran out of some sizes. (See the shirt ordering info on page 3.) The next was the parade in Parsippany, in which we had 6 trucks. And the high part of the year was our show at Automatic Switch! (Statistics and info are listed on page 4.) First I want to thank all who worked not only at the show, but to the handful who helped get almost 10,000 flyers out to the public. It was the help of just a few people that made this happen. Just think what we could do if there were another 25 to 50 people getting the flyers posted at food stores, barber shop, delis and gas stations! Again I want to say THANK YOU to all the members that stepped up to the plate to help with the show. There were a lot of trucks that we haven't seen before. Report of the May 22, 2013 Business Meeting

President Arnold Block opened the 297th meeting of the Metro Jersey chapter on Wednesday, May 22nd at 7:55 p.m., with a salute to the American flag followed by a moment of silence for our troops and deceased friends. Minutes of the April 2013 meeting were approved as distributed in Stack Talk. Treasurers report: March balance of Income Expenses May Balance $3,946.73 $549.00 $363.34 $4,132.39

OLD BUSINESS: Pine Island show may not happen this year. Two Kids Foundation Show: Birchwood Manor, August 4th. Parsippany Rescue & Recovery Show: Lanidex Plaza (date currently unknown). Montgomery, Orange County New York show: July 28th. Please sign in at the meetings, we will distribute this list to entice other members to attend the meetings. NEW BUSINESS: We listed the commercial vendors attending our show; a record number of vendors already paid to be at our show. Both State Farm and Haggerty Insurance would be there. The club presented the plaque truck award to Thomas Amaducci. A second air filter donation canister has been made, along with easels to display additional signage for the back entrance. Saturday work party will attempt to get as much done as possible before the show. Need to complete the sign-up sheets. As of the meeting we had 46 pre-registered vehicles. The colored flyers have been a large success. The club authorized Bill Wagner to spend up to $200.00 on folding plastic tables to replace the old damaged stock. Additional signs will be complete by the show date. A small work party will be held after Macungie to clean and organize the trailer. At this time there is no place to go on an old truck tour. Show ads are only in certain TBG editions this year.

Monday is the Memorial Day parade in Parsippany. Let Arnold know if you will be participating, Bill will pull the ATHS trailer with his van.

Staff will be issued lime green hats and walkie talkies. Bill Wagner won $34.00 in the 50/50 and donated it back to the club. Meeting adjourned 8:50 PM

Over the Road

Hi folks! Our picture this month was taken by me in 1964 at the Eastern Express terminal in Maspeth, L.I. New York,while I was employed there. I worked for Eastern from 1964 through 1977, becoming the shop steward for Road Drivers, at the newly opened terminal located in West Paterson, New Jersey. Eastern was a great company to work for as it was like one big happy family. Their home office was in Terre Haute, Indiana, and their operating authority extended from the mid-western states to the eastern states of PA., N.J., Maryland, and up into southern New England. An imaginary line running north and south on the PA/Ohio border divided east from west, and freight picked up west of that line was to be delivered east of it and vice versa. Us over-the-road drivers ran from the northeastern terminals, like Maspeth and Paterson would run turn around trips to Harrisburg, or one day layover runs to Bedford, PA, where the system relay station was located. In the early 1970's, the relay station was moved out to New Stanton, PA, which made for better paying runs for us guys. Other interesting runs were to North Lima, Ohio, where we met a Chicago driver who brought a set of 40 foot doubles east over the Indiana and Ohio Turnpikes. He drove a special White 4400-TD with a 903 V-8 Cummins engine in it, and boy, did the twin chrome stacks on that truck sound great. Another fun trip was down to what we called little Washington, PA, near Wheeling, W.V. We could meet the Terre Haute drivers there. Like Bedford, it was a good layover town with lots of food and drink. In the picture above, the truck on the right is about a 1957 Mack B-65-T, which by then, had been downgraded to a city tractor, meaning that it would now run local around the New York metropolitan area, making pickups and deliveries with a city or local man driving it. The other truck is a brand new 1964 White 9000-TD road tractor, which would run over-the-road trips. They were powered by 225 HP Cummins engines, and a ten speed Roadranger transmission. These tractors were extremely nice to drive, with good heat and the roomy Autocar type cab with it's big wrap-around windshield. We ran out across Pennsylvania, over the Allegheny mountains in both summer and winter, and in those days, everybody didn't get off the road, just because it started snowing. You kept going until you couldn't go any more. I spent many a night sleeping in "Hotel Mack", or "Hotel White". Sometimes, it took the snow plow driver to wake you up. I always carried a small car radio that you could hook into the truck's electrical system to listen to the hillbilly music, and of course later on, a CB radio to BS with the other guys. Running the road was always fun for me, and it put groceries on the table, bought me a house, and raised my Daughter. What more could I ask?
