Performance Notes
Here I Am, Lord is simultaneously a hymn of Gods compassion and of Christian ministry, making it appropriate for vow profession, ordination, and commissioning liturgies. Its length and mood make it an effective communion meditation song. The song does take a bit of practice to perform well. We nd that the refrain is very easy for congregations to learn. The verses should be sung by a soloist if at all possible; this enables the dialogue between the Lord (verses) and his people (refrain) to unfold without confusion. An optional vocal harmony part has been provided for verse 3; if this is used, it should be sung by a single voice or small group of voices with the same timbre as that of the soloist singing the verse melody (i.e. women singing with a woman soloist). The guitar accompaniment is the most difcult element of this piece. The chords with complicated names actually involve simple ngerings that have been moved to different fret positions. Finger picking, while it may take some practice, greatly enhances the effectiveness of the song. The style and mood of this hymn suggest that it should not be strummed, since it would make the accompaniment too heavy. D.S.
